Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 Macro Lens Review (Canon Mount)

Hi guys! Kieran Wright Photography here again with another lens review. Today i'm reviewing the 70-300mm f4-5.6 Macro lens made by sigma (for canon EF). It's a budget telephoto lens which is jack of all trades but master of none. Still, it has impressed me enough to buy it and use it too! I've included a set of photos I've taken with the lens at the end of the review :) Enjoy!

    I bought this lens for $90 used and it's one of the few lenses where I feel I got WAY more than my money's worth. It really does get some good shots. You have to stop down a stop from wide to maximize sharpness, but that's true for every lens. Another side benefit is since it's so cheap I take it places and treat it in a way I'd NEVER take or treat an expensive lens. This has the effect of freeing up my head and concentrating on the shot rather than worry about gear. Getting good focus is hard, my focus ring is nowhere near smooth and using it for video for rack focus is not fun. But if I need more on a special shoot, I'll rent.

    Yeah it can fit onto crop sensor and full frame bodies just the same. The Sony A7 looks like a capable, small (relatively) camera. Unfortunately it doesn't look like the lens is supported on the adapter - or at least it won't make any changes to it. Sorry that i didn't respond earlier, the notifications didn't come through on my mobile :(

    Coraline baiardelli I have had issues focusing it on my Sony bodies only because the adapter I use is pretty shotty... You may have issues focusing because there isn't enough contrast for your camera to focus properly. Or you may have a broken lens (there are guides online to help with that)

    hi, I want to ask, lets say Im using this with A6000 with a manual adapter, which means no electrical contact. Does it affect the normal/macro mode ? is that switch electric or just a lock between zoom range?

  • @KieranWrightPhoto

    @KieranWrightPhoto

    7 жыл бұрын

    It's a physical switch, so you can even change it when the camera is off. Of course it does need to be between the 200-300mm zoom range. *And* you should probably be able to get an automatic adapter to use with it anyway. Without it, i assume the aperture would remain wide open (although i wouldn't know)

    Hi Kieran I have just subscribed and I have exactly the same lens on my Canon 600D which I have had for several years but only beginning to use properly and improving my photographic skills. I want to get into wildlife and macro photography and explore the zoom lens. I am happy with this lens as a beginner but are there any other lenses including “Budget” that could enhance my photos or give me a bit more versatility in the field? I enjoy your videos.

    I'm glad to hear you were rocking the same setup! It might seem counter intuitive but have you tried Canon's own 55-250mm zoom lens? It's got image stabilization and focusses a lot quicker, if memory recalls, which should be a better fit for wildlife. You could also get a nice & old manual focus 135mm f2.8 lens (216mm FF equivalent on our 600D) if the wildlife are more human friendly. I've reviewed a few here on the channel and I've actually found it to be one of my favourite lenses to use (and the cheapest too since they're designed for film cameras). Grab one of those if you want something a bit different. Try and get an M42 mount one - they're super easy to adapt to Canon. If you want even better macro while in the field and still don't want to invest very heavy then think about grabbing some macro extension rings! Up to you if you want the autofocus ones or not. Sorry I didn't get back around to replying for so long but I hope I helped anyway. Thanks so much for subbing, mate! 👍

    Hi, I have the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro Super lens. How can I attach it to Canon Kiss X5? Which adaptor should I use?

  • @KieranWrightPhoto

    @KieranWrightPhoto

    5 жыл бұрын

    The kiss X5 is identical to the 600D/T3i which means that it has the same lens mount. If you bought your sigma lens in canon EF mount, then I should slot right on. Otherwise you'll have to search for an adapter of your lens type to EF mount. Or just return it and get the EF native mount :)

  • @KieranWrightPhoto

    Your camera body is actually the exact same as the one i used in the review. The only difference is the name (it has different names in different countries). This means that your lens is not canon ef or ef-s mount. I'm guessing you might have gotten a Nikon version? It is possible to adapt such lenses to canon bodies, but it is not recommended as you won't be able to use all capabilities of the lens (AKA focusing to infinity, and possibly autofocus). Canon lenses are practically adaptable to Nikon bodies, not the other way around. I would ask your cousin what mount it is for (or ask at a camera store), and maybe give it back to him or her, if it doesn't suit a body you have, or are going to buy. I hope you can end up using it, because it does open up a bunch of possibilities :)

    Lola Bunny i did fail a few times but thanks to 10x digital zoom and live view, i was able to smash it :). oh, and patience too haha! but you probably already knew that :P APO is short for 'apochromatic'. I found a guy on this site that explains it pretty well in theory: www.ephotozine.com/forums/topic/dg-macro-vs-apo-dg-macro-lens-question-57838 I can't say for sure whether it's better because i've never had the pleasure of testing it... This being said: my favourite lens reviewer; Christopher Frost has a good review of the APO version. it seems like it's slightly different and maybe a better performer - but it also seems that the price delta (of about $40 from a quick glance) makes it seem like lower value. i can't speak for the market in your region, ofcourse. I'd say that if you can find it for a similar price then give it a go! you may also be able to return it shortly after you buy it, if you're not happy with it :) also shopping second hand can get you good value (i only payed about 50aud for mine :D)

    Lola Bunny yeah he also made me hesitant but as with any lens, you will find a way to make it work for you! i mean I've even used the lens' macro mode to photograph guinea pigs :). even if the lens isn't as good as you were hoping, it'll probably change your photography and you can't put a price tag on that :) I'm not really sure what else to say other than i hardly use this as an autofocus lens. oh and i found a bunch of auctions (used) with no bids around $50-80 aud so good luck and i hope you like it :)

  • @KieranWrightPhoto

    @KieranWrightPhoto

    7 жыл бұрын

    anmol bansal they're both very similar - so i can understand your predicament. i just read a review of the tamron and it seems like the main way that it's better is that it can engage macro from 180-300 as opposed to 200-300 on the sigma. so that's a nice plus, but not a particularly important one, i suppose. i then looked on ebay and it seems like the tamron is *marginally* cheaper new, and the same price used (about $50 if you're lucky) so i suppose it boils down to this: it depends on availability/price for you and on which one you think looks better. I'm pretty sure the tamron is less like a pear, so there's that :P I would recommend shopping used by the way, because you can find pretty perfect copies out there for less - and if you ever want to sell it, you can probably make 100% of your cost back, or there abouts! good luck :)

    Very nice review! The video footage is quite blurry because of no IS, how do you achieve sharp images especially at long focal lengths? Do you think this is a good Tele for Sony a55 (APS C sensor with IS in Body)?

  • @KieranWrightPhoto

    @KieranWrightPhoto

    7 жыл бұрын

    Arijit Gupta yeah the videos weren't particularly stable and maybe if i had reshot those, i could have achieved better results. Even stabilization done in post processing didn't eliminate all of my shakiness in some shots. How do i get sharp results? well a combination of good posture, fast shutter speeds, patience and use of tripod (although not as often as i might need) it's easy enough to keep the camera and lens stable enough once you've zoomed to your desired focal length but it's hard to also zoom sometimes unless you can use a tripod of some form. as for using it with that body, i can't really say for sure since I've never had the pleasure of using it. it looks like it may be a fine fit from looking at the photos and stay tuned because i may actually be buying a body with sensor stabilisation soon! so I'll *eventually* *hopefully* have a definite answer for you :)

    Thank you Kieran. Even though I am an absolute newbie and only learning to shoot stills, I think your suggestions are valid for both still and video. And I'll wait for your future videos. Subscribed! About the lens, guess what? picked it up today for 55 Euro. Can't wait to go out with it. For a 1.5x crop sensor the max focal length is a super zoomed and at 5.6f if blessed with good light, this seems capable of making great shots. One thing I've noticed though, for Sony A mount there is no AF/MF switch on the lens (because of IS in Body?). Finally, may I ask what do you have in mind for body with IS :p :p

    Arijit Gupta well I'm glad to help :). thanks for complimenting my testing methodologies! hey that's not a bad deal at all! well done :) i just had a look at an alpha mount 70-300 on the b&h website and it seems to have it on the base of the lens there. if it really isn't there then I'd assume it would be controlled by the camera. I'm thinking of pickimg up the panasonic lumix g80 (/81/82/85 depending on where you live) which is actually a micro 4/3rds body with a 2x crop factor! it's got 5 axis stabilization in built so i just cannot wait! • @KieranWrightPhoto

    @KieranWrightPhoto

    7 жыл бұрын

    The price, optics and features are similar between the Tamron and the Sigma are very similar. Just about the only way they differ is their build quality and their weight. The Tamron weighs just 458grams where the Sigma weighs‎ 545g (the Canon is 630g). The Canon 70-300mm is not considered to be a macro lens like Tamron or Sigma is (although neither of those are true macro lenses) because the canon only has a maximum magnification of 1:3.8 compared to 1:2 on both the others (where 1:1 macro is best). What the canon gains over both the macro lenses is the *USM motor* as well as 3rd gen *Image Stabilization* and a zoom lock switch. I haven't had any hands on time with the canon or the tamron so all i can say is that if you want a more general telephoto zoom lens (and have about 2x as much money), then pick up the canon. If you really want that macro ability (and don't want to try using macro extension tubes) then pick up either the tamron or the sigma.

    Just bought one used for my 5dm3 after watching some reviews, seems versatile enough to be the lens to bring on vacation along with my nifty fifty.

    Well you know - the best lens is the one you bring with you! I'm sure you appreciate the extra 100mm of zoom compared to the 70-200? I'm glad my review could be of help :)

    Why the comment that full frame camera users wouldn’t buy a “budget” lens like this?

    To be honest I probably shouldn't have said that because it's an assumption & also because more midrange focussed full frame cameras do exist as well. Sorry for that mate

    @@KieranWrightPhoto yes I’m supper happy, also today I went up my pond again and took a few shots some came out quite well but I had 2 sharp ones showing all the details of the dragon in flight… I put the shutter speed at 1/4000 and then set the aperture at 5.6, then played around with the ISO and took a few trial shots to get the right brightness and then zoomed in to what I wanted it at, and manually focused it as the dragon fly when it was flying about and took some shots at it and most came out good, I had 2 nice sharp pics and quit a few came out blurred as those dragonflies don’t hang about, one of the dragonflies was very curious of me and it came right up the the lens a few times and also by my face but it was to close to take a shot at as all blurred.. I did it all free handed also the lens was set on the macro switch, I did try taking pics with the lens on automatic but by the time it focused in the fly moved out of focus… If you have time you need to give it a go, also I focused the lens in by the areas that the dragon was flying to so I did not need much adjusting when it went there, it’s fun to do.

    It certainly sounds like a super interesting subject! :). And it's always fun when your subject finds you interesting too haha :D. Come to think of it, I have shot a dragon fly on this lens before - but it was years after I made this review. You might have inspired me to give dragon flys another shot!

    @@KieranWrightPhoto I have an allotment which I keep poultry on etc and have my own pond up there and there is a pair of dragons that is always on there and they will chase any other fly that goes near their pond, anyways try those settings and change the ios to the conditions on the day as you understand and give it a go again, it’s quite difficult at first when manually adjusting the focusing but when you get to understand the dragonflies movements you will snap some great shots but will get some blurred ones as expected but when you get a nice sharp shot it comes out amazing and I was very impressed using the older canon 6D which I normally use for landscape astro photography etc 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👍🏼
