The 35mm focal length is shaping up nicely indeed what with the Sony 1.8 and the Sigma Arts 1.2/1.4....and I hear in the passing wind a Sony 35mm 1.4 GM is going to drop in 21!! on a side note I'm looking forward to your 65mm F2 feature and how it may compare, to say, the voigtlander (to which I own). The optics too seems to have a lot of character. Its also interesting that the series has a 65mm - waiting to see your review of it & how you see it vis a vis the voigtlander. Hi Dustin, A thorough review as always. I’m looking to get a 35mm prime for documenting daily family life (candid moments with young kids etc.), family gatherings and the rest. I was going to get a Fuji X100V but have instead decided to add a light 35mm prime to my collection. I bought a Sony A7IV late last year and got a 50mm 1.2 GM based on your recommendation, and have been extremely pleased with it. But I find it a little heavy and bulky for everyday use, and 50mm somewhat tight for indoor photography. I’m deciding between this Sigma f2, Sony 1.8 and Sony 1.4 GM and have watched your reviews. The Sigma and Sony 1.8 are similarly priced here in Australia and the 1.4 GM costs twice as much. I know you really like the 1.4 GM and highly recommend it. I’m not a professional and would be willing to spend the money if it’s really worth it. My main requirement is a really great lens but more importantly, a lighter/less bulkier overall setup so it doesn’t feel like a chore to capture small daily moments (hence my initial decision to get a Fuji). I’d really appreciate your advice as it’ll greatly help me with my final decision. Thank you kindly!

I may go for the smaller footprint so if you were to choose between the Sony 1.8, Sigma 2.0 and Samyang 1.8, what would you personally go for in order of your preference i.e. first, second and third? Thanks again!

Thank you for your comprehensive review. At the end of the video you mentioned that the reviewed lens is like a 35 loxia with auto-focus. Does the Sigma have the same or near micro-contrast, 3D, color rendering; Zeiss pop? If I prefer these characteristics in a lens, should I go for Loxia, or the Sigma delivers near Loxia rendering?

You've been my go-to for lens reviews ever since I moved to Sony, so thanks for all that you do Dustin! I'm considering this or the Samyang 35 1.8. My requirements are good background blur, good lowlight video performance and good lowlight video AF performance. Which one do you suggest Dustin? I already have a Tamron 28-75 2.8 so is the difference between f2.8 and f2 siginificant enough or not?

The unofficial word from Sigma is that Canon and Nikon are being very protectionist so far with their RF and Z mounts. I think their plan must be to try to build up a first party base for a few years before opening up the platform. I think that's foolish, as it gives Sony a huge advantage.

In terms of the sigmas sharpness at f2 and f2.8 (more so at 2.8 for equivalence) against the Tamron at f2.8 which do you think is sharper / has even sharpness profile. The deciding factor being sharpness at f2 & 2.8 of the sigma against the Tamron at 2.8 with the extra stop of the sigma against the tamron macro being bonuses. Any advice is always appreciated. Great review as always Dustin..in your conclusion you mention your preference for this lens over the Sony 35mm 1.8..but I beg to differ..The Sony 35mm 1.8 has better bokeh (no concentric onion rings) and for this focal length which serves for environmental portraiture, I think that is a quality I would prefer more than slight edge in overall sharpness from the Sigma..The build on the Sigma is excellent however and I believe you are getting carried away by this..of the 2 newly released Sigmas I would prefer the 65mm..becuase of its unique focal length (lack of competing lenses at this focal length) and image quality (no bokeh issues)..if you would want to own a lens with this characteristic design and build the 65mm lens is the one to get.. Also I own a Tamron 35mm 1.8 SP for the A-mount which I use with an LA-EA3 adapter on the A7III..Image quality wise and referring back to your review on that lens..the Tamron is sharper than this Sigma throughout the image has similar bokeh with slight onion ring pattern and has no vignette issues..it is also a decent alternative for this Sigma lens..

Sigma's approach to weather sealing is realistic IMO. This fad of using sophisticated electronic cameras in the rain is based on marketing, and people's unrealistic ideas of engineering. Whilst the equipment may function fine, moisture will inevitably get inside these systems and lenses. Corrosion is being invited by doing so. Metal and water don't mix well. Dustin, if you're gonna point people to another video, 'standard review', please don't do it after 2 and a half minutes into this video. And honestly, do you have to say it in every, every, every video? How many people do you think drop by to see only one of your videos, and never come back? And are those people your audience, or ones that watch every review? And if it's the later, do you think you need to waste couple of minutes on our time on 1. description of standard vs. definitive review 2. how you don't like screw in hoods, and are rallying against them, eventhough they are traditional part of the rangefinder world, and those are people that are most likely to come to those manual lenses. So manufacturer knows better, but you're convinced you know better?. and 3. that you don't like focus by wire, all mirrorless lenses that are not manual have focus by wire, you find that it's not ideal, but then conclude that it's the same for all, and if you want manual focus, get manual lens. Love your reviews otherwise, and you've been influencing me since the Canon 6D (original) text reviews. Sorry I came in a bit short, but I've been thinking this at least 50 times so far... You are fantastic/amazing, when you're not dragging your feet repeating the same old, same old...

Hi Zhelko. First of all, about 74% of the views on my channel come from those who aren't subscribers, so yes, it is important to quantify that there is an alternative video for two different types of viewers. I actually arrived at this format by polling my audience on multiple occasions, and this was their preferred system by a large margin. My explanation of the difference between the two formats takes about 12 seconds on average. As for screw-in hoods and the manufacturers knowing better - I have been consulted by these manufacturers dozens of times for my opinions, so yes, my opinion does matter, and yes, as a real photographer, there may be occasions when I know better than an engineer who designs but does not use equipment. As for focus by wire, you are making the assumption that everyone knows all mirrorless lenses are not focus by wire, but that's only because you are an informed photographer. Many are not, so I'm not just speaking to experienced photographers but often educating those who are not. I always take people's negative feedback under advisement, but if you were in my shoes, you might discover that it's all a little more complicated than you might think.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Dustin, since you took pain to answer, let me clarify what I meant. I feel you missed my point, or points, or said in a politically correct way, I didn't explain well. 1. Explaining different formats of video is fine and cool, but it should not come after sinking 2:30 into the existing video. That's more than 20% of the short video, and 10%+ of long video. I'm saying that should be your first statement. But seriously, do you need to explain it in every video. Non-subscriber doesn't mean someone who is seeing your video for the first time. So 95%(guesstimate) of your viewers have heard this message. I feel you're projecting from your primary vocation - you're dealing by nature with averages over there, and I know that people need repetition, and average people rarely pay attention. But I don't think that's your audience on this channel. Someone checking video reviews of all sorts of weird lenses (rather than basic zoom) is likely to be informed and curious. So, I think you are underestimating your audience. 2. Engineers are not deciding on the feature of the lenses, but product managers. I've been one, though for software/digital products. Job of product managers is to talk to many people, their audience, understand their needs/pain and make decisions that will sell most of whatever they're selling. So, you've voiced your opinion to them, and you've lost. You DO NOT know better than decent product manager. They'd lose a lot more sales from traditionalist, than gain from people that don't want to buy the lens because of the hood. This actually could change, as rangefinder ppl. disappear, so at one point, you will be right. 3. As for focus by wire, similar comments as for #1: education is fantastic, but repeating it again and again, you'e not educating, you're preaching ;) And repeating your own opinion/education makes you look what, a bit full of hubrus? Well, not full, but some for sure. And yeah, same thing for me, otherwise I wouldn't have answered. But I'd like to think that part of the reason I've done it is to help you get better. @@DustinAbbottTWI Having said that, I think what I should have said first, is that by doing these videos, you create something useful, and are doing service to the world. You create value. So thank you! And I apologize for not balancing my input early on. I have an explanation, but explanation is not an excuse, so I'll skip it...

@@DustinAbbottTWI It is easy, Fox News is a "tell half-truths" or lie, lie, lie network. Do you see where I'm going? You are trying to be nice to everyone, everything (all lenses) is good...You are making it for the clicks, to get more followers and that is wrong. I do not reaspect people like you.

Well, the series has a 35mm f2 and 65mm f2 but a 45mm f2.8. I feel like the f2.8 is a bit limited, and the 65mm is in a weird spot. Also the 24mm is f3.5 and all different thread sizes.. They look amazingly builds and I’m drooling over them, and I’m willing for some compromise for the smaller size.. but at the same time I’m feeling like all of sigma lenses are too big or small and limited in some way.

I can understand the frustration over different filter threads, though the contrast is that Tamron had to make certain design compromises to accommodate a 67mm filter thread mandate. The 65mm is actually a great focal length. I've got the Voigtlander 65mm F2 and love the focal length.
