Looking forward to a Sigma 20 F1.4 Vs Sony 20 1.8 side by side comparison.
Wow, what a performance. Wonderfully sharp lens, this looks like a great piece of kit.
Hi Chris, thank you very much for the fast reviews of both of Sigmas new lenses. Dont ever feel your reviews are boring and repetitive. They are! But in the best possible way! Thats the ONLY way for us consumers to get an idea how lenses are - if you can’t compare the, side by side. Speaking of side by side: Which is better for astro: Sigma 20mm DGDN or Sony 20mm G?

Amazing review of an amazing lens, thanks a lot Chris
After months of looking at many different lenses in the 17-21mm range, I finally decided to order the Sigma 20mm f/2. Two hours before it was delivered I first heard rumors of this lens coming soon. Fortunately, I've been very happy with the f/2 so far, and I'm resisting the temptation to buy this. I don't need it, I don't need it...

Nice review and a wonderful lens , thank you !
One of my favorite lens, it produce different character than any other lens. Mine was mark 1 and cant wait to have this mkii
Happy to share! :)
Chris, how does this compare against my beloved sony 20mmG 1.8!? Need to know ASAP!
This looks beautiful.
The best lens reviews on the net.
Loved the dslr 20 for unique wife angle portraits. I currently have the voigtlander 21 1.4. This lens looks better but i love the color of the voigtlander.

The Voightländer seems to be a touch sharper and likely has less loca. But the Sigma lens has autofocus and pretty fast one as well which could absolutely be helpful for portraits. it is going to be much more valuable for a lot of people, especially since the Sigma is likely going to cost less than the Voigtländer.

@@cameraprepper7938 He makes no sense and contradicts himself with his own test chart. "The Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG DN, is the best one in term of sharpness excellence in the centre but unfortunately the lest good one in term of corners only reaching very good level , this is why the best for the entire images stays the Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 Nokton Aspherical and the Sony" The CV is only excellent in the corners at F/5.6. Whereas the corners on the Sony 20 F/1.8 at F/5.6 are Outstanding. By F/8 they both are excellent at a typical landscape aperture.
Hope they update their 50mm 1.4 Art lens soon too.
hopefully a fuji version of this comes at some stage! Aperture rings are always a big plus in my book compared to their current fuji offerings
Nice! Could bey holy grail Aurora lens. I own the Sony 24/1.4 and 14/1.8. Love the 24 but it's kinda tight and almost dictatesaking panos and the 14 is just OK wide open. Tried the 20/1.8 and my copy was less than impressive so I returned it. I planned on trying another copy for the upcoming Aurora season. Think I'll pre order one of these instead. Cheers!
I've adapted the DG HSM version onto my Nikon Z7II and I loved the results; once this lens is available on Nikon Z mount, it is definitely going to be my go-to ultra-wide lens. Fingers crossed it's coming soon!

I use on Z7II as well for astro mostly. I like how it performs. At non infinity distances, this lens has field curvature or is less sharp in the corners but it's sharp where it counts at infinity for me. Even at 1.4 the sharpness across frame is acceptable for printing big tbh.
I have the voigtlander 21 1.4 and i so love that lens esp it's colors. This lens with the 82mm fl and all other goodies definitely will be a great addition to peoples bags for those that didn't want a mf 20/21mm lens. I would be curious to see it be compared to the sony 20 1.8g. Coma performance is pretty important for this FL for astro shooters.
Yes! Filters!
Thanks for this useful review. It will be great if you can do the comparison between Sony 20 1.8 G and this Sigma 20 1.4 Thanks
Fantastic flare and coma performance. Just the inevitable vignetting at f1.4 on full frame.
The original 20mm f/1.4 has been my favorite. Should I upgrade to this?
I was comparing this to the Sony 20mm f/1.8 in your review, and noticed that the test chart itself looks different, have you changed it recently?
Can't wait for their 28-70 f2
This lens looks lovely, but I've already got the Sony 20mm 1.8 which is a superb lens in its own right. I really don't know that this would be an upgrade.
Thank you Chris
Hi, How would you rate sharpness centre and corners of this Sigma vs VILTROX X mount 13mm equivalent 20mm please?
can you review old version emount and compare it with this ?
i have the Canon EF version of this lense, its a blast to use and i still use it on my canon R5, however while 1.4 is very neat - the coma is a bit more visible than on the Samyang 14mm f2.8 so im always torn between those two. sigma is deffo sharper but has more coma, while the samyang feels a little less sharp but has basically no coma and is much much lighter :D

There's no EF version, this lens is designed for mirrorless cameras. The older EF 20mm from Sigma is a completely different optical design.
Now for the first time I am first to comment. Blessings from Suriname!!!
I need this.
Great lens 👌
Wait. so what are the drawbacks of using the older 20mm f/1.4 art lens on something like a nikon mirrorless with an ftz adapter?
Sigma rocking it after the trio of C lenses a while back, also 1.4

Those are entry-level aps-c lenses -- very nice (I'm about to buy my 5th), but not on the same level as Art DN.
In my opinion you should test every lens for coma, an example could be the Rokinon 135mm f2 since it's very famous amongst astrophotographers

Is this compatibel with canon sl3?
Awaiting for this to come onto the Nikon Z system. Been wanting this sort of lens for a while now.

@@shootermcgavin4999 It's not that they don't allow third parties. Cosina has made lenses with electronic communications for Z-Mount, along with Viltrox. It's more to do with the fact that because Canon and Nikon do not open their mounts up for licensing (at least as far as we know), companies like Sigma and Tamron need to reverse-engineer the mount protocols, and this needs time.

@@Bayonet1809 The problem is there's certain brand quality that comes with "Art" If Nikon isn't releasing the algorithm that allows them to be competitive with Nikon's best. Sigma isn't going to drop 💩on that mount and ruin the perceived prestige of their "Art" legacy. That would F up their brand and ultimately money in the long run. IDK how long Nilon and Canon can keep this up. Maybe it's more profitable to keep a tight lock on the system for now. Who knows 🙄🤔!?

But it’s actually 30mm when compared with full frame so it’s not relevant to the conversation really
I bought this lens yesterday. Today it's not working. I switched from photo mode to video mode and the aperture closed to maximum i think f16 . Because the camera can't recognize the lens anymore. I am really so sad now. I bought it brand new. It's making motor sound 3 times every time i switch the camera on but nothing is changing. Yesterday everything was ok really. 😔
I don't know if I should upgrade to this lens when I already have Sony 20mm f1.8 G..

I have the 20/1,8 and one of the reasons I love it is its portability and balance on a Sony camera (I hand hold it alot). This Sigma is approx twice as large and heavy. If all you use the 20/1,8 for is starry skies on a tripod then yes, seems worth it

This lens or the Sony 20mm f1.8?
I'm paying attention to the best in the business.
No love for RF mount. I'm sad. :
This lens would sell like hot cakes on Canon RF!
Great
I hope the bring this out on RF mount when they start supporting that mount
my biggest wish,. that canon allowed sigma to make RF Lenses for Canon Lineup,.
I had the original Canon version it it was humongous. Optically perfect, but very not practical, not the lens one would take for a walk for fun. Opted out for a Viltrox 20 2.8, much lighter and smaller, and sharp as well.
The Sigma 20mm 1.4 are big and heavy, I am not fond of 20mm focal length Lens, but if I had to choose, I would get either the Voigtländer Nokton 21mm 1.4 or Sony 20mm 1.8 G.
It's a bit more expensive than Sony 20mm F1.8 in my country. I know it's almost 1 stop faster than Sony, but it's 2 times more heavy ... I guess I will chose Sony ...
Looking back at your Sigma 14-24mm f2.8, the corner sharpness of the 14-24mm is better than this new 20mm f1.4 even stop down to f2.8. The only advantage of the new lens is 2 stop faster.
The weight is not managed well at all unfortunately....over 600g is just too much when Sony 20mm f1.8 G is only 370g and performs really great. This is a great lens for those with strong back and muscles!

f/1.4 slurps 67% more light than f/1.8, so the Sigma 20mm f/2 is the more appropriate point of comparison. It's 365g and all metal. The only other 20mm f/1.4 is about a kg.
@chanjeff4406

But it has f1.4... and better corner sharpness than Sony wide open... And 630g isn't really that heavy at all🤔

600g vs 370g seems big percentage wise, but in reality it's not that big of a different at all, I am a Sony 20mm f1.8 owner and pre-ordered this Sigma 20 1.4 DG DN, F1.4 over F1.8, have rear filter holder, and most importantly for me, the Manual Focus Lock, all very practical features on top of great optic. I think is a keeper.
@Vantrakter
Жыл бұрын
@@dannyli9424 In fairness you haven't received it yet so you can't really say if it's a keeper or if there's hardly a difference in size and weight. I once tried a Sigma 35/1,4 DN which has similar weight and length as this 20 1,4 and it was noticably front heavy on an A9 body. In absolute terms 600g isn't much but in camera lens terms it can be, depending on how it balances with the camera body.
@dannyli9424

@@Vantrakter you are right, i should say " will be a keeper " instead, as for the weight and size thing, no, i don't have to try in order to tell, I am used to the Sigma 35 1.2 and 14 1.8 art so this is going to be a " tiny" lens for sure. also I will be using it on Z9 mostly as I will keep my Sony 20 for my Sony system. I don't like the Nikon 20 1.8S so I will give this Sigma a try.
Aggressively priced at USD899, this is essentially the same list price as Sony's 20/1.8. Each has their strength and weaknesses but obviously, the 2/3 stop aperture difference may be the most obvious determining factor.
Sigma, please, next time make the lens hood _not_ look stupid.
