Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 Review: The Ultimate Sports Lens?

Get samples here: sdp.io/S300Samples & buy it on Amazon at help.tc/s300
Chelsea & I test the amazing Sigma 120-300 f/2.8, the $3,600 lens that gives unbeatable results for sports. Note that we did use it as a sports lens shooting quite a few soccer games prior to this more objective review; we just can't use the example shots from the soccer games because we'd need model releases from all the players, their parents, and the audience.
You won't be able to hold it up for more than a minute or so. For sports, you'll need a monopod.

    For Chelsea's shot with the 70-200 @ 1:01, the camera body appears much farther forward than Tony's setup with the Nikon, which gives the sense that the Sigma has focus breathing issues. Shouldn't the bodies be at the same length from the subject for a focal length comparison, rather than the ends of the lenses?

    How could a 300mm have less reach than a 200mm? Even at different distances? I don't see how the external (non lens) factor of the subject distance from the lens could change a lens' field of view. And that's essentially what I perceive you said. So it brings farther objects closer to the camera then it brings closer objects. Is this to do with the physics of light? The mirrors in the camera? Also- even if it doesn't bring the close objects closer, does it still compress them more than the 200mm? I can see in the portrait comparison display that there is a difference in the shape of the face so it does do something.

    UKcraigant Crop sensor cameras use FF lenses like this, very well. And should you ever move to FF camera you are all set. Your lens will have even more reach than someone using a FF camera with he same lens. I use both FF and crop cameras with this lens. I think this lens is a much better investment than the 150-600mm lenses that are very in vogue right now, because this lens is an f2.8, and those are f5.6 or even f6.3. For sports or any low light shooting, the f2.8 is a huge advantage. Also for portraits where you want that creamy defocused background.

    Also the Nikon is closer to 165mm at close distance not 135. Your issue is youre not taking into account the canon breathes in the opposite direction by 30mm.... its actually a 230mm lens close up.

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    @TonyAndChelsea

    That's not true... Matt had an error in his formula that caused him to incorrectly exaggerate focal length the closer the camera moved to the subject.

  • @bikefreek

    @bikefreek

    8 жыл бұрын

    Matt who? what are you talking about? The canon focal length is a known figure and Ive tested the nikon myself and its 165mm. Your test with the extension tube was flawed. The extension tube magnifies the image and exaggerates the results. The correct test is to compare framing at f22 of a scene that is roughly 20 ft away... racking the focus from near to far you can compare the near focused shot to different focal lengths set at far focus. That will give an accurate idea of the focus breathing.

  • @bikefreek

    @bikefreek

    The subject of the test doesnt have to be at minimum focus distance. If the subject is further away the shots are easier to compare because you are looking at two out of focus images. As far as the math I dont how the FOV is measured (vert, hor, diag) I care more about a person claiming companies are deceiving customers, while that same person is doing the same or worse.

  • @16229craig

    @16229craig

    Bikefreek: I absolutely agree that the subject does not have to be at minimum focus distance, but I specifically used that to show the worst focus breathing and the maximum loss of effective focal length my copy would do. To me, Tony's video seems to show that the front glass of the Canon is the same distance away from the girl as the front of the lens hood of the Sigma is, but at this point we don't know. If that is the case, though, this is far different than making a comparison when the focal planes of the cameras are at the same distance.

    My solution to using the Tamron 70-200 VC for tight shots is a little 12mm electronic macro tube - loses infinity focus (who cares), but it alleviates the focus breathing and minimum focus distance becomes mostly a non-issue. (Yes, you lose a fraction of a stop as well.)

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    Camera von Theuns Yes, extension tubes can (temporarily) fix it! We did use them in the studio with the Nikon a few times, though it can be frustrating when you change zoom or move back a bit and suddenly you can't focus on your subject.

  • @williamhumber5890
    @williamhumber58909 жыл бұрын

    Probably a bit late for this, but the Canon actually increases in focal length as you get closer to MFD. At ~7ft it has an effective focal length of ~229mm and near MFD it has an effective focal length of around 270mm.

  • @TonyAndChelsea

    @TonyAndChelsea

    9 жыл бұрын

    William Humber I went over the math with the guy who thinks the 70-200 grows, and his measurements included a flaw which exaggerated the focal length as he moved closer to the subject. If he got close enough, the lens would have an infinity focal length. It's 200mm throughout the range, even up close. You can validate this by taking up-close shots with and without an extension tube. Extension tubes cancel the effect of focal breathing, so if the angle of view is different, the lens suffers from focal breathing. If they're the same, the focal length stays the same throughout the focusing range.

    Tony Northrup I'm not sure how you went over the math, but I'm quite sure you're mistaken as this is something you can measure very easily or even see just by looking through the lens and focusing.

They have the 12-24/4.0 art, the 24-105/4.0 art...all is missing is the 100-300/4.0 art to have a complete set of high quality zooms covering all the focal length spectrum. This 120-300/2.8 is bulky and super expensive. I would think that a max 1500$ 100-300/4.0 art lens would have a following!

    Tony, Really interesting topic that hasn't been really well reported. Your also really good with nerdy numbers. So is it possible that you can measure the FoV angles and magnification of the most popular lenses in the upcoming focus breathing video. If possible get the Nikon 70-200mm F4 into the mix as well. It doesn't have the seperation of these faster lenses but it also doesn't seem to suffer from focus breathing as much

    You should check out the nikon 80-200 af-d (2 ring) lens. It's the only 80-200 2.8 that's still in production. I think it has neglible amount of focus breathing... And it's quite unique because it's the simplest 80-200 2.8 zoom with only 16 elements and it'd be great to have a modern review of the quite old (20-30 years in production) lens. And it really is built to the old sandards (full metal build) since it has no AF motor and no IS. It's also quite cheap when buying new, let alone buying it in good condition of ebay

    Thank you very much for the excellent and highly revealing review of the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 II Sports lens. I was also considering this for portraiture work as well, but this review revealed that the serious problems it has with focus breathing makes it unsuitable for this purpose. This makes it a very good lens with one serious flaw. It also has some problems with chromatic aberrations compared to similar zoom lenses-7µm of chromatic aberration according to DXO Mark vs. 4µm for the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8, and a mere 2µm on the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x. I would hope that Sigma considers releasing an Art lens version of the 120-300mm f/2.8 that corrects the severe focus shift problem through the addition of floating elements, which would also improve minimum focusing distance (currently 150-250cm) making it additionally usable as a macro or "close focus" lens. This isn't unrealistic given that the Canon EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS II USM has a minimum focusing distance of 98cm. If Sigma could get the minimum focussing distance down to about 70cm, it would vastly broaden the appeal of the model. It could also do with the addition of further low dispersion elements to get rid of the excessive chromatic aberration to the point it might become a true APO, apochromatic, design. This would be critical on a model with a short minimum working distance. Perhaps they might even add an aspherical element to improve the MTF plots even more. The autofocus might end up being a bit slower, less suitable for sports, hence making the Art lens designation more appropriate. Sigma offer both a Contemporary and a Sports version of the 150-600mm F5-6.3, so why not an Art version of the 120-300mm f/2.8 as well? It wouldn't be cheap, but it would be an amazing lens with wide appeal especially given the way Sigma has been making waves in the high-end category of late.

    Timur Dzhambinov It's a design choice when designing the lens. It's a compromise in any lens. A compronise that I'm not happy that more and more manufacturers are making. My old Sigma 70'200 HSM breathes out, like the Canon 70-200. My new Tamron 70-200 and 24-70 VC's both breathe in, significantly, at the longest focal length, when approaching MFD.

    The breathing issues are quite interesting. If the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 is effectively about a 135mm at short distance, how does it then compare to the Canon 135mm f/2.0 L prime lens for close portraits? Wouldn't that mean that the Canon could manage about the same compression but with a more shallow DoF? How about compared to any oldschool manual 135mm f/2.8? Those are dirt cheap on ebay/amazon and both they and the Canon prime are smaller & lighter.

    Can you say within about +/- 6 inches how far away the focal plane of the Canon was from your portrait subject when you tested focus breathing indoors? I have the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 dg os hsm s and tested on a D800 at 300mm and at the minimum focus distance of about 98 inches, and was not able to get the lens to focus breath significantly enough to lose reach. I also have the older AF-S VR NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED and was not able to get it to breathe significantly, though I do know of that issue with the VRII. So, I'm interested to compare at as close to the same distance as you used to see if this is more a question of reach and true focal length than it is focus breathing.

    A full focus breathing and effective focal length test of the lens: www.craigwasselphotoart.com/pdf/Sigma_120_300mm_F2_8_DG_OS_HSM_S.pdf which clearly shows the lens focus breathes by only a small bit, and its effective focal length is not as short as is suggested here.

    Did you test this out with any teleconverters? I do a lot of sports and some wildlife and shoot Nikon (can't afford to switch and not interrested in it anyway). I use the newer Nikon 80-400 (and sometimes the TC-14e III) on a D7100 in the light and in the evening use the Tamron 70-200 with a D750. I've been considering either adding a Nikon 300 f2.8 or this Sigma 120-300 f2.8 to the stable. I know the image quality of the prime is top notch, but the versitility of the 120-300 is very convenient. I think they weigh about the same, but wondered about using a 2x Teleconverter. I know it'll perform better on the prime, but how much better is the question. Seems like the price of the Sigma and a 2x TC vs. the price of a Nikon 300 and a 2x TC is maybe worth the slight trade-off in miniscule loss in image quality. Thougths??????

    ***** The 300 f2.8 prime is a bit sharper--DxOMark rates it at 32 P-Mpix on the D810 (pretty remarkable) whereas the Sigma zoom is at 29 P-MPix (so, within 10%). We didn't test it with a 2x TC, but they're sharp enough to hold up well.

    ***** Jason it works really well with the Sigma 2x TC and having a 240-600 F5.6 lens makes for a great lens for wildlife and sports photography where the versatility of the zoom range gets you a lot more shots. The quality of the image, even with the TC makes cropping a viable option as well. I use it with a full frame DSLR (Nikon D600). Have a look at the flickr group 'Sigma 120-300 2.8 teleconverted' for examples

    T&C, like a few others below...I went to this video to hear your thoughts on this lens but walked away with one and only one thing...CAPTURE ONE!! I love your content and thought you guys were firmly in the Adobe camp as relates to processing software. I see you mentioned below the speed advantage for tethering...BUT my main question is about RAW conversion. I saw you were planning a video, will you be looking at the differences in RAW conversion between ACR and C1? I have been on the fence about moving to C1 for months now and so many people swear by the "better" RAW conversion. I know you always try to be as objective as possible, so I hope you will cover the conversion differences if any and help me and any others considering a move to C1. Sorry if this is overload for KZread comment but I am also very interested to see if you find an advantage in using C1 adjustments in layers...a feature not available in LR. Thanks in advance for what I know will be a great review.

    Giovanni Mercuri Yeah, I'm pretty fed up with Lightroom performance, and I held out for Lightroom's 6, but you know how that went. Right now we're just using C1 to tether, and still processing in LRCC. I just need to find the time to learn C1 inside and out, but I'll keep you posted as I get to know it. It's definitely faster. Re: the quality of the raw processing, my understanding is that it's just the default settings that differ, and that you can achieve the same look with LRCC or C1.

  • @giovannimercuri5168

    @giovannimercuri5168

    9 жыл бұрын

    Tony Northrup I know I have not done my due diligence (i.e. my own research or experimentation) but my understanding is that C1 produces "different" output from the RAW data that LR/PS/ACR...that is, there exist no settings in Adobe products can necessarily be made to match what C1 can produce/extract/render from the RAW data. I have been trying to watch the seminars from Phase 1 on their KZread channel (I know it is mostly marketing talk when it comes from the software company itself) in which they constantly talk of the "quality" of their RAW conversion vs. others...but they NEVER show their stuff side by side with LR or DxO or anything else. It is also my understanding that DxO Optics Pro has capability that even C1 does not have as relates to the RAW conversion. The three products (LR, C1, DxO) also have totally different noise reduction algorithms that as a result produce very different output etc. Anyway, I had intended to grab some trial versions and do some testing myself...mostly of the subjective/non-scientific type..but if you had any input or results you find while looking at C1 (or anything else really) I would love to hear what you found. If there is anything I can do to help look into this for you, I am also very happy to help in any way I can.
