Good review and info. You've talked me out of them. I was under the impression they were quite a bit more capable than they appear to be. They appear to be pretty much useless without an illuminator and don't have very good range. Thank you for your work. All of that being said, it's still a step forward and cool stuff.

If you're looking for some cool digital nvgs, check out the Pvs-69s. 3D printed digital nvg binos, 75⁰ FOV, and only around 1k. The new sionyx looks really dope, but it's way too expensive for what it offers.

Always good to see things being pushed forward, but great honest review and comparison as always. The 17 degree viewing angle felt like the biggest draw back of this unit compared to the Syionx (given the need to use IR for both anyway). Sure it won’t stack up to analogue (yet) but digital NV is a relatively new product to the market, I’m sure it’ll come on leaps and bounds (although whether the price will end up being the same pay to play as gen2/3 who knows).

Good review. The detector in that unit decays rapidly in quantum efficiency with increasing wavelength - in other words it won't respond that well with 940nm illumination. The reality is the wraith is a digital camera with the IR filter removed. In contrast, the standard SiOnyx Aurora has capability down to 1/4 moon, the Pro runs to no moon and starlight and is a genuinely capable outdoor "night vision" camera.

@@AnvilAirsoftTV If you plot a graph, x - axis wavelength (400nm to 1200nm = VIS, NIR and early SWIR) and Y - axis quantum efficiency (percent) for a series of detectors you will find most camera detectors have peak efficiency around 500-600nm (In the meat of the VIS spectrum) and their performance declines and trails off with increasing wavelength from there. A typical sensor will be ~ 75% efficient at 600nm, at 850nm that efficiency may have dropped to 30% and by 940nm the efficiency has dropped to 15%. Thus a 500mW 850nm IR illuminator will appear twice as "bright" as a 500mW 940nm IR illuminator. Most camera detectors are dead by 1000nm. Some security cameras (detectors) have further reach with efficiencies of around 20% at 1000nm. The Sionyx detectors are still at 65% at 1000nm with the OPSIN reaching right out 1200nm. The QE or Quantum efficiency is a measure of a detectors ability to turn photons into electrons. For reference the peak efficiency of a Gen 3 photocathode is ~ 35% and the peak efficiency of a Gen 2 photocathode is around 20% - however these are paired with MCPs which massively increase the production of photoelectrons. Hope this helps. 😀

My Vive focus pro has four of five cameras on the outside of the thing and if I get close to the boundry in complete darkness I get a slightly grainy view of the entire room at 180deg and can see with no lights on. These night vision companies are sandbagging because they want to keep selling ancient technology that is similar to your old CCD TV sitting in your grandmother's living room.

No you don’t have to for ‘civilian’ grade units. It’s only really military/law enforcement grade Gen3 tubes that you need a good reason to buy due to ITAR regulations as the manufacturers don’t want them going into the wrong hands. The same goes for some higher end digital and thermal units too.

The wraith isn’t worthless but for fast moving, force on force situations under low light there are some serious limitations. Most of it is probably the screen they’ve used. Digital is cool but nothing compares to Analogue Intensifiers. Digital is nowhere near as responsive, clear or powerful astraditional intensifiers while also shining like crazy to everyone else because it beams out IR. You'll stick out like a sore thumb and get blasted before you even know you've been spotted. Traditional night vision is objectively superior. NV is a pay-to-win game, that's just the bottom line. However Chinese NNVT NVG tubes supposedly coming in at as little as $300 per tube which could seriously revolutionise the market and make it more affordable for more people.

I hate "NV is pay to win" Unless you have top end night vision you need to learn how to walk and move without tripping over things and bumping in to people or trees. Then it's also easy to fall in to the trap of thinking it's pitch black and you're the only one who can see, ans then find yourself out in the open and get shot. Then once you get past this you need to aim with your night vision on. All of this needs work and training. Plus having night vision is one more thing to have to sort out and get fitting right. You will soo get a headache if it's not fitted properly, and you can't shoot if you haven't got your gun set up to work with your NODs.

I’m not entirely sure what you asking. However You can passive aim with them using an optic that has night vision compatible levels of illumination.

The aurora black and pro have a slightly better picture than the sport. The black is better than the sport and the pro is better than the black. Not by alot but enough to tell.

We’ve done a comparison between the pro and the sport on the channel, I’ve tried all three models and I agree with you. The sport has got a lot better with the firmware updates too.

Hey there, Is the viewing 1:1 ratio? Also, how’s the latency for walking etc?

  • @AnvilAirsoftTV

It’s 1:1 as standard unlike my SiOnyx which needs to be zoomed in for 1:1. At 30fps not a lot of latency with an IR source.

@@AnvilAirsoftTV Gotcha! Even though you said the vertical field of view isn’t so great, do you feel comfortable walking using them without tripping over stuff or no?

I would be cautious using them on unknown ground tbh. I know those woods quite well and even then it was difficult navigating.

@@AnvilAirsoftTV It’s really interesting to me that these companies don’t pay attention to things like this when they are developing them! If they simply tested them theirselves they could probably make the adjustments necessary to at least create a much more functional unit. It isn’t difficult to change or add a better field of view, especially because these aren’t real NODS but instead are utilizing a camera and lenses. They would probably make a giant sum of sales and money if they took it just a bit more seriously etc! But who knows what they were thinking. Great informative video friend! 👍🏼

Biggest issue I think facing them at the moment is getting a screen big enough that the eye can focus on at that distance. The development going into VR headsets will help that. For instance the Wraith has a 4K sensor but a 720p screen. That limits the field of view you can show at 1:1. Small OLED HD screens are expensive and it remains to be seen whether consumers will pay the money. I think at the moment it’ll cost just as much as analog technology to get digital competitive.

They have some limited use. Especially if the opponents don’t have any NV. But I largely agree that they aren’t really suitable for mobile force on force scenarios.
