SIG SAUER P938...THE COOLEST GUN I WON'T CARRY

This is a tabletop review of the SIG SAUER P938. In this video we will discuss the history, size and features of the firearm. In addition, we will demonstrate how to field strip and reassemble the gun for cleaning and inspection. Range performance will also be discussed along with different tested methods of carry and how comfortable it is to carry on a regular basis. Last, we will provide an overall opinion of how this firearm stacks up for concealed carry purposes. Thanks for watching!

Bought my P938 about three years ago. It came with two mags, one with the extended pinky extension. It has been very reliable. ZERO misfires, stove piping or hang fires. Accuracy at 25 yards is amazing. Mild recoil with standard 9mm and VERY easy to rack the slide to chamber a round, unlike every other sub compact semi auto I’ve tried. I love it.

Your experience with the P938 is virtually the exact opposite of my experience. Easy to conceal, however, persistent FTEs and sharp recoil even with prescribed two handed grip are the norm. Take down and reassembly is more difficult than necessary. Local respectable gunsmith could not find a problem with the pistol.

Yea, I have the p938 sas too that I bought new. Mine definitely came with the flush mag and extended mag. Also, regadless of it came with an extra mag or not, saying you won't carry a $700 gun because it didn't come with an extra $20 mag is a bit much. I've shot handloaded light loads, freedom munitions factory reloaded, gold dot, high powered self drfense rounds, and just random bulk 9mm from whatever brands... Never had a single issue. It's definitely snappy and not a good range toy, but you're buying a tiny 9mm, it's going to be much more snappy than say a glock 17 lol. People complaining that it's both too snappy and has feed issues.. seems like a very overlapping vinn diagram... I bet people are limp wristing and the gun isn't cycling

I too have owned the extreme model and carry it everyday. I carry a flush mag and at 15 yards I can shoot a fist size group every time. You have to practice with your carry gun. In reality, most civilian shootings happen within 3 feet, fire 3 rounds and last 3 seconds. consider that when choosing a CC gun.

This is my EDC & has been for several years. I presently own 2 of them, each is mounted with a laser. I trust it to protect my life. I also purchased one for my daughter to carry, which she does every day. When each of these were bought they ALL came with both an extended mag & the shorter mag. These mags NEED to be broken-in to loosen the springs!! I loaded the mags & left them loaded for 3 days. I then loaded & unloaded them several times. Since then I've had 0 failures. Each also came with hard wooden grips AND rubber grips with finger grooves. I use the rubber grips for general shooting practice & OWB carry. I use the hard wood grips for pocket carry (which I much prefer). FABULOUS GUN!!

I bought a P238 when it was new and added a P938 when it came along. The 238 had a lot of problems when new and needed a couple hundred rounds and lubrication before it smoothed out. The 938 was similar but never smoothed out like the 238. The gun was designed for the .380 and when adopted for 9mm I suspect the heavier spring made the gun require an even firmer grip to cycle properly. As far as the hand grip, the 7 round mag seems to solve that on both pistols. This gun is perfect size for the .380 cartridge but a little too small for 9mm.

Did some work on my P938 and it runs like a champ…M-Carbo spring kit, Tillamook Precision steel trigger, Hogue rubber grips with finger grooves, extended mags with pinky hold, heavy magazine release spring from Midwest Gunworks, left-side only safety (OEM, P238 fits fine)…enough DIY work that it took all the fiddly stuff with this gun and pretty much eliminated it. Takes a lot of getting used to when it comes to assembly and disassembly (there’s lots of stuff you can do to literally render the gun unshootable if you’re not careful), but once you’re familiar and know what to look out for (don’t put the safety on when disassembled, don’t over-depress the extractor when you’re putting the slide back on, don’t accidentally launch the slide release spring, don’t put the takedown pin in the wrong hole when putting the gun back together), you have yourself an amazing carry gun that’s more than worth the effort. For what it’s worth, I chose the P938 over the Kimber Micro 9…just felt it was a more solid option…and I wouldn’t own a Glock if Glock was the only gun mfg. in the world…lol. As for feed failures, the only issues I’ve had have been mag related…in general I find the magazines to be kind of janky/chintzy and I did have a magazine whose base plate that wanted to press out when the mag was full…it was for sure a mag issue tho I did replace the magazine release spring (heavied it up, as I said). Carry wise, I run an Urban Carry lock leather for OWB, a HAWG Holster for those rare occasions I run IWB and, indeed, I LOVE the DeSantis pocket holster (I have one for my P938 and one for my wife’s Walther PPK/S).

Mine stovepiped every magazine on the fifth round when I first got it so I sent it back, they replaced the ejector and ejector spring and it’s run 100% reliably ever since. Mine has the rubber hogue style grips and came with an extended magazine. I’ve carried it every day in every season for about 10 years now, it took me some time to trust it completely due to the failure to eject issue so I can understand your apprehension. You already have a lot of money into it but it might be worth it to pop for an extended magazine and see it resolves the fail to feed problem, it’d also give that third finger something to grip.

I also have a "Redwood " handled P938 with a seven round Sig magazine. After owning and shooting it many years without any problems it began having occasional failure to feed problems on the same ammunition I have practiced with for years. I tried other brands with the same failure to feed issues recurring. Over time the failure to feed issues worsened becoming more frequent i.e. several failures in a single magazine. Eventually the magazine itself began ejecting completely out of the pistol while half loaded. After much online research the problem ended up being a worn magazine release spring. I replaced the spring at home easily with a red colored" heavy duty" magazine release spring from Midwest Gun Works. It solved all the problems without the need to replace the original Sig 7 round magazine. The gun function is now rock solid. Multiple attempts to induce a failure to feed with rapid fire "magazine dumps" have failed to reproduce the problem. Nice to have my old friend back !

I was just as excited waiting for mine a few years ago. It came with the 7 round magazine with the pinky extension. Even with the extension, I agree the grip is less than comfortable. Overall, however, I love the gun and it is very comfortable to carry. In several years of ownership and various types and brands of ammo there not not been a single failure to feed or any other problem. I just bought a 6 round magazine today and am curious to see if it causes any problems.

I have both micro 9 and 2 938s one being a legion, the kimber magazine works in the sig and are less expensive and they make 8 round ones. The only problem with the standard 938 is the plastic trigger that can break at the pivot, mine did at 1500 rounds. The micro 9 has a metal trigger stock as does the legion 938. Carry one every day and shoots great.

Got home to clean the gun and the front of the guide rod was missing. Found out this is not uncommon to happen to the 938. Called Sig and the sent a new guide rod. I was planning to take it apart, unscrew it, and reassemble using red lock tight. I was not able to budge it so I figure Sig had already addressed the issue with red lock tight or something else. Gun has performed flawlessly since that episode.

I took the mags apart and cleaned them. One of them looked like the spring was reversed. After reassembly, 1 holds 7 the other almost 7 (still working with this one). Purchased 2 more 7 round mags - both easily hold 7. Stippling was a bit aggressive so I put on Talon grips. Love the single action and trigger. Very 1911-ish.

I took it out loaded the magazine and began shooting. I ended up shooting about 100 rounds And never had a problem. The first 50 rounds were terrible I could barely hit the target. By the end of the hundred rounds I was hitting the paper plate we were using four or five out of the seven rounds in my mag. So far very pleased with the P2 38 and looking forward to shooting a couple hundred more rounds soon. By the way we were at 50 feet. Now I’m very pleased since you mentioned you train at 21 feet. 😊

I’ve got the Springfield Armory 911 in .380 ACP, essentially the same design made by a competitor. Had it for 3 1/2 years now. There are a couple of other guns I carry now and again but this is what I carry 90% of the time. First couple hundred rounds I was having some failures to go into battery and light primer strikes. After that, it was very reliable, with either six or seven round mags. One important thing I learned from a guy who helped run the range I was shooting at had to do with the best way to clean this particular type of pistol. He said don’t use too much CLP-type oily cleaners, but instead use a non oil based cleaner like Birchwood Casey “Gun Scrubber”, especially on the slide assembly. I took his advice and the problems disappeared. I’ve got probably 2000 rounds through it now and as long as I clean it every 100-150 rounds, it is as reliable as the day is long.

I've owned the gun for approximately 3 years and only had the magazine jam one time. For me, it's been a reliable firearm that I carry on a daily basis. A very good reliable weapon easily carried. My only problem is it's only a 6 + 1 so I do carry two magazines when out.

I had one as well and had multiple problems in feeding. Some history on that gun is that Sig used the 238 platform and basically modified some parts so it would shoot 9 mm. From what I remember, the first generation had extractor problems, Sig modified the gun so it would function. Mine had an issue with the main spring housing. The problem was the housing was polomer and the sear spring was metal. The Sear Spring engaged the housing via a small raised button on the polymer housing. After firing x amount of rounds, The polymer button would causie the sear Spring to separate from the housing. The sig talk forum is a great resource for owners of this gun who have had multiple issues. The last I read about and did not happen to me was guide rods separating from that bass that you referred to as having a U-shaped notch. From the postings on that forum people were saying that the guide rod and the base were two pieces that were threaded. The rod would back itself out and actually would project out from the gun while people were shooting at the range. I have since sold the gun and got myself a P2 38 which I love and have had no issues with all bed it is a step down in ammo because it fires 380 and 9 mm.

Bought this for my wife yesterday. Bought it new from the gun store for $650. Came with one 7 round mag. I bought an extra mag while I was there. We first rented a few guns for her to try. I carry an HK p2000 and that was way to big for her. We rented the sig 365, sig p938, S&W shield and one J frame for fun. She settled on the 938. She loved it! Shooting all those guns made me realize the sig 938 had the least amount of snap when shooting. It came down between the 365 and the 938 and the 938 was just a bit more smooth. My wife is a 1911 shooter . She seems to do excellent when shooting one so the 938 has very similar 1911 features which made it very attractive to shoot. Great gun.

I have a sig p238 HD stainless. The 9mm version came out 3 months after I bought mine. The two pistols that I own that are the smoothest, most accurate and reliable are my P238 and my Baretta 92fs stainless. They are both bomb proof. One caution on reassembly of the Sig. If you push that little curved pin to far down it can pop down off it's guide and you will have to completely dissemble the handle to put it back in position. It is a very difficult process to do that. Many people would need a gunsmith to reassemble it.

I wonder if the better grip you get with the extended mag helps focus the recoil to run the slide better? I bought a P938 3 months ago and it has well over 700 rounds through it without a single FTFeed, FTE, or FTFire. 115gr Ammo types all over the place due to range ammo being a different brand every week. I have also run Buffalo bore 115gr +P JHPs, Lawman 147Gr Flat nose FMJs, Sig 124gr Ball Ammo, Reloads, blazer JHPs, 124gr +p, and Sig Elite V-Crown 115gr JHP. Sig Elite V-Crown 115 JHP is my carry ammo. I use the 7 round extended magazines. Never tried a 6 round. Maybe that is the issue for you.

I WISH I could buy a P938. It's what I wanted to buy. Got the P238 instead. With plans to carry it in non-Bear Country as a lil backup pistol for when I've got a deer on the ground, and my hands are bloodied up. So before using it in that capacity I ran all the various lead-free all copper bullets I could find thru it. Have NEVER had a FTE/FTF, EVER. I think I've got about maybe 7 or 800 rds thru it by now. Definitely get yourself the 7rd mags w the pinky extension. Stunned by the accuracy of this little pistol... once YOU master your own body mechanics in terms of shooting a small pistol. Can even keep it in the black of an 8" target @ 25yds. My initial goal was as a pistol for my wife to carry when, for her work, she'd have to travel to satellite offices to handle "employee issues" such as terminations. That P238 was by a noticeable degree, the easiest to rack slide out of any of the .380's I'd tested at the LGS. And the sights!! LOVE THEM!! Big chunky 3-Dot combat night sights that I can even see without my glasses on! So... as soon as the courts can finally B-slap the CA legislature to abolish the dumb Handgun Safety Roster BS.. I'm hoping to get a 938. EDIT: one thing I did right off the bat was opt for an aftermarket guide-rode that has a captured spring to it. Definitely recommend that upgrade as it makes disassembly a breeze.

There has to be something goofy with the feed ramp geometry, mag follower/lips, mag spring tension or whatnot when scaling the 1911 action down to this size. Mine doesn't have failure to feed, but about once every couple magazines (2-3 times per box of ammo or so) it'll double eject. Seems that friction between cases in the magazine is enough that when feeding a round the preceding round from the magazine is partially pulled away from the magazine lips. Every so often the following round is stripped just enough that the only thing keeping it in the magazine is the pressure of the slide resting on top of it; once the slide moves back to eject the spent round, the partially stripped round is sent flying as well from the mag spring tension pushing up on it. It's even happened during a CCW live fire qualification. Instructor hands me 6 rounds, load six into the magazine, 5 bangs and a click, check chamber and there's nothing there; a few seconds searching on the ground and there's a live round just sitting there. It's something I've noticed also when topping off my magazine. After chambering a round, removing the magazine to top it off I'll find that the top round has been partially stripped/pushed forward and occasionally removing the magazine will strip this top round from the magazine and it'll fall out of the mag well when the magazine is removed.

With my purchase of the Sig P938[*] I got two mags: 1. The extended 7 round mag (with room for your pinky finger on the grip), and 2. The non-extended 6 round mag like your showing. [* I ditched the "nice" grips and put on one piece rubber grips with finger grooves, which made my hold on the gun much more sturdy even with the non-extended mag.] ▪︎ I carry it _cocked & locked_ in the kydex holster the came with the gun. While I have other excellent carry pistols this turns out to be my easiest carry. ▪︎ I've had no failures with the P938 after ~2,000 rounds (but I don't doubt your experience).

Yep, this pistol really prefers 124gr ammo. I made a deal with my wife, she wanted my 938 and she knew I was eyeballing the P229. She said she'd get me the 229 for my birthday, if I would give her my 938. After a few minutes of mulling this deal over, I agreed. About 2 days after picking up my new 229, I was really feeling like something was missing...and it was....my 938. Love the 229, great compact to carry, but not practical under some situations. I realized that the 938 filled a particular nitch that my larger pistols really couldn't, and that was flexibility. Because of it's small size, the 938 is very versatile, it can be quickly thrown into a pocket without the need to holster-up. I wear sweat pants quite often and can accommodate the 938 quite easily, something I can not do, even with my compact 229. It's the perfect pistol to carry if you're just running to the gas station, or convenient store, or need to take the dog around the block to do his business, or just knock around the house. Throw it in your pocket and off you go. My new 938 should be arriving any day now lol. This deal really worked out well for me...a very happy birthday.

I have the P938 and had the feeding issue! I also had issues when I would chamber a round then dump my mag to top back off with another round, the top round would hold the mag in and fall out when pulling the mag out! I've tried multiple mags and it does it every time! Sig Sauer sent me a new mag to try to resolve the issue, but after further research I've discovered that's the design of the gun and the mag has a spring issue. Kimber Micro 9 and P938 is basically same magazine but one of the two has a weaker spring, not sure which though!

I owned one starting back in 2013. I bought the rosewood grips, got a kydex holster for it, and extended mag as well. Problem was, the trigger pull was hard, and gritty. Definitely not a pleasure to shoot. Eventually, I found myself leaving it in the safe rather than taking it with me to the range. (Couldn't hit targets with any consistency, thus not much fun.) I checked with Sig Sauer, and they offered for me to send it in to them for a $300 trigger job. I said no thanks, as I had already spent nearly $1k already and had expected a good-shooting pistol at that price. Went and put it on consignment while living in California, and some Sig fanatic was tickled to death to get his hands on an "off-list" carry pistol. I happily took my money and bought a used Springfield EMP with 8 spare mags for the same money I got out of it. (The EMP shoots like a dream, and came with the rosewood grips already.)

Sig has always been on point with customer service so that certainly surprised me that you have sent it in and I have to believe they covered everything in testing being the importance of a carry weapon/Any weapon for that matter. If it were me I would buy two extended mags and shoot hundreds of rounds through it to break it in ,Maybe not cleaning it prior to shooting when its new ,I personally have never done that.

Bought one of these in 2012 and had some of the similar problems you did at first, including not being able to get through a full mag without a FTF or FTE (usually stovepipe). The first 250 rounds were a stoppage nightmare. Tried multiple types of ammo in different weights and didn't fair much better. I even bought two additional magazines to test with. I thought I had a dud and started to despair that I'd bought an overpriced range toy. Slowly, however, it started working better and better. Basically there were two things I found to help: 1) lube the hell out of it (these guns like to be wet) and 2) repeatedly work the action on an empty gun to bed all the parts together. It looks like Sig's tolerances were too tight out of the gate and everything would just bind up. Today when I disassemble it for cleaning, I can see where the parts have worn in and developed a nice polish. This shouldn't be necessary, but it works. Somewhere after round 300 everything wore in and it's run flawlessly for at least the past 1000+ rounds. Now that I think about it, it's probably time for a new recoil spring...

I have a P938 and a P365. I sometimes have failure to feed issues with the P938, but never with the P365. The P365 has a MUCH stronger recoil spring. The P938 has the lightest-strength recoil spring I have ever felt. I also have a tendency to limp-wrist when I shoot (working on that). The lighter spring, coupled with a weak grip, are the reasons for failure to feed. I am chalking it up to 'user error'. I love the gun because it is so small (even smaller than the P365) and I have the new SAS version (slips right into/out of my pocket), but until I train to have a few more range sessions to work on strengthening my grip, I will keep carrying the P365.

Had the same problem but it was caused by the way i held the gun. My grip would sometime slightly depress the mag release, with my large hands my small finger was under the mag holding it in. This allowed the mag drop just enough to cause a failure to feed. My grip would allow the mag to relock back in position which made me think it was a problem with the gun.

  • @Jeff_Engineer

Mine also fails to feed. I have not sent it back to sig yet. One issue for me also is the depth of the grip. That makes for a very stable grip but I can't eject the magazine without shifting my hand to reach the release. The extended mag also hangs on my lower hand as I depress the release. I'm trying to decide if I want to begin modifying the grip and magazine, or wait until I can improve the feed rate first. I prefer a gun I can drop the mag from without having to reposition.

First, thank you for a very thorough review, even a generous review, considering your experience. Mine came with two magazines (one extended) and a holster (looks like a Fobus, but doesn't say). I've only put 300 rounds through it, because I purchased it just before Covid, and I have been "economizing" on ammo since then. But I had no failures to feed or to extract or to fire in those 300 rounds (my Glocks 23 and 27 had no FTF or FTE, but two dented primers that fired on the second try, out of probably two thousand rounds each, so they were reliable too; my Kimber has had no failures of any sort in several thousand rounds). So I wonder, since the P938 is similar in some respects to a 1911, if your short magazine effectively causes a limp-wrist. My hands are so small that I can get three fingers on the grip, and I grip it firmly, as I do my Kimber Ultra CDP II. But for an individual with larger hands, it might be that the wrist is not limp, but there's just not enough grip available to hold against the recoil at the bottom of the grip, so that you get the effect of a limp wrist, without a limp wrist! If you have a friend who is roughly 5'-3", as I am, with small hands, it might be worth having him test it. Maybe the people in New Hampshire who are testing it have small-ish hands also, and that would explain it. Sorry I can't offer more, other than well-wishes for resolution, and for happy and safe shooting.

The only issues I had with my p938 was the two piece guild rod comes apart after 3 or 4 mags of shooting then you have to disassemble the gun and re-tighten it…and the grip screws constantly came out…no Loctite of any type or color available at the time helped at all…having to always tighten the screws I stripped a screw hole sent it back to sig and they did their thing and use the Loctite they had and it still happened so I got rid of it…other than that it’s a great shooting gun…mine ate everything I put in it…I had the extreme model 2014.

Three magazines are not enough for range use for any pistol IMO, so I bought three more with the P938 Legion. 6K+ rounds through it and it’s been flawless. I recently bought another Legion for my daughter because she thinks it’s the perfect 9mm to put in a Sticky holster sewn into her purse. I’m a .45 1911 guy. That Kimber 8 round mag you have fits directly into the Sig giving it 8 round and give lots of room for your hand

I have to agree with many others, here. Mine runs 100% reliably, all kinds of ammo, including my own cast reloads… rounds, round HPs, SWCs, TCs and my personal favorites.. TC HPs. To be fair, I did get mine used, so I do not know if there were FTFs early in its life, and out of my own habits, I do polish all feed ramps , on all of my semi’s. Since purchasing mine, I was lucky to find, and purchase a .22 conversion kit. Double your pleasure, double your fun ! Also, I do use the extended mag, along with Hogue’s rubber over mold grips, w/ finger grooves. I have large hands, and that combo feels great to me.

I have the P938 and had the same exact experience as you, it would fail to feed every other mag on any kind of hollow point self defense ammo. Sent it in to Sig twice and they claim they filed down the feed lip on the barrel to make it less aggressive of an angle and I still have the same exact issue. Have probably put a few hundred rounds of range ammo through it no problem but as soon as I put in any hollow point it has the issue. I've had enough and going to trade it in for a Kimber Micro 9.

I have two and they both came with the extended mags. As a woman, I don't have large hands but a larger/longer grip would be nice and I would feel more comfortable/confident using it.
