In the conclusion I neglected to mention that the reason I was firing at distances farther than the typical seven yards ( like the 25 yard meat target demonstration) was because we were discussing military pistols so they may be used at farther distances.

Yes, even in civilian LE agencies we fire a small amount of rounds at 25 yards. The bottom line is that it can't hurt people to at least have some experience at ranges they aren't too comfortable with. Hey, you never know.

Hi Paul, as usual, THANK YOU for another great and informative video. I had one question..during the holster exercise, you spent a LOT of time unsnapping and snapping back up that holster. Is it common for military/police to use such holsters? It seems that that would add unnecessary times on draw especially....and if they do so, why? Sorry if it seems a stupid question, but I'm civilian only and never really seen military holsters much, and that seems like unnecessary impediments to drawing and firing the weapon.

bBlaF that is some how significantly worse than the underfunded peoples army of finland. I was conscripted as a armored vehicle crewman and our personal weapon was a pistol. The equipment manifest of my vehicle had a folding stock rifle for the commander(me) but we didn't get to use those in training. Other vehicles in the same unit had their list item weapons(guns had a PKM for the loader and a folding stock rifle for the commander. Gunner and driver only had their pistols). We fired the pistols maybe 3 time in a square range and 3 times in the field in various practical forms during the year. One was a dismounting exercise from a disabled vehicle. The others were practical competition like stages in a forest involving running and shooting at pop up reactive targets. In my opinion the small arms training was still not at the level is should have been. In comparison we fired more artillery shells per gun during that year than how many rounds we got to shoot with small arms.

@@maxb5398 No sir, CLP or any oil based lube is the worst thing to use in dusty, sandy or extreme cold climates. Oil based lube's attract dust/sand like a magnet. I used PTFE Dry Lube and had my wife send a few cases to share with coworkers on M4's, M9's and Glocks. Also, when I was younger, I was in an Airborne Arctic Light Recon Detachment in Alaska and once made the mistake of using CLP w/my M16A2 on a winter FTX. (My TL knew better but thought it would impact me more to learn about cold climate & oil lube's the hard way, as opposed to just telling me). We conducted live fire LRP Op's and after I fired my rifle once, realized the BCG was frozen solid!! The casing didn't eject or work the action, I couldn't pull the charging handle, nothing! It was frozen solid because the CLP lube mixed w/condensation froze,,, especially since I was going into a warm CC tent and out into cold weather over and over all night. I had to leave my rifle next to the yukon stove to thaw, then wipe it down and apply dry graphite lube for cold weather. The dry graphite lubed M16A2 never had a single problem in the same conditions. This is how I came to learn about dry lubes. Just a little food for thought sir.

Paul, very enjoyable comparison. Over the years I've noticed that one of the indicators of a proficient shot is that he or she can turn in a good performance with any number of pistols. I took the time to pause the video and score your two shot drills at ten yards. If I scored them correctly, which wasn't easy because you shot a different number or rounds with the three guns, you turned in a 90.7% score with the M9, a 91.8% with the M17, and a 90.8% with the 1911. That is some pretty good and consistent shooting from the holster across three different types of handgun.

@@user-pq4by2rq9y Paul seems to be a pretty good shot with a lot of different handguns, but you know, I've noticed that about a number of "old-school" shooters. For example, Hickok 45 does a pretty decent job with whatever he picks up. I think the reason for that is that for guys who learned to shoot in the pre-Glock era, there were only a relatively few reliable handguns, and manufacturers didn't cater as much to consumers. So basically, we learned to shoot what we had or were issued. Most of us probably started out with a DA revolver, and after you learned that, every other trigger seemed pretty easy to us. So when I got my Beretta and SIG in the early 80's, I barely noticed the first DA pull to SA transition that everyone makes so much of today. It is sort of like shifting gears on a car with a manual transmission. Once you have learned it, you barely think of it at all. But for people who began shooting later, if all they have ever had to learn was a short trigger striker-fired gun, I'd imagine that DA/SA thing is quite challenging, as is DA on a revolver We just learned it because there was no other choice. Cheers.

I have the P320. Basically the same except for the lack of a manual safety. I have to say it's a very consistent firearm, as it should be for the pricetag. I have put about 2000 rounds through mine with no malfunctions at all. The tritium sights are very nice in low light. Mine seems to shoot low and left with practice ammunition and dead on with my carry ammo, not certain on the reason for that, it could be me.

23:00 YES!! I have a story about this. In 1965 my father was reporting to Chu Lai Air Base with VMA-311 which was the first squadron assigned to the base. They didn't really have the base completely set up, and it was lacking in even a bare minimum defensive perimeter. There wasn't even so much as barbed wire around this base to keep anyone out, let alone mines and guard towers. Seeing this dire situation, dad went over to the armory to check out a 1911. They REFUSED to issue him one because of the "Geneva convention" , as he was the squadron's flight surgeon. And dad said just what you said here. I think his words were "sons of b****es will shoot you just as soon as they would look at you". Still determined to get SOMETHING, he went over to the PX to see what they had. I think his plan was to hopefully find a 12 gauge pump, and if anyone would question him about it, just say "oh that's for ducks". He managed to purchase the only firearm they had: a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 magnum.

A couple of points: 1) When the M17 program was adopted the main question was not whether to keep the 1980's era M9 design, but rather to overhaul them or replace them with a new pistol entirely. The proposed M9 variant replacements are the M9A2 and M9A3 with the A2 being an upgrade kit and A3 being a new pistol. The A3 modernizes the M9 platform to have night sights, a standard 17 shot magazine (21 round factory mag available), a significantly smoother trigger pull, and an added recoil buffer. So, the P320 M17 vs the M9A3 functionally comes down to only one factor: hammer vs striker. I am not going to argue that debate here since both merit advantages and disadvantages. 2) Here's the issue with the P320 M17 program. The reason it was selected by the military was cause according to Sig they could roll out the P320 for less than $200 Million. Beretta said it would cost a little over $300 Million to upgrade or replace all current M9s in service to an A2 or A3. Cost was the driving issue and Sig sang a beautiful song. Here's the fun part. The P320 didn't go through nearly the number of field trials that the M9 and P226 did in their trials. The reliability of the P320 is questionable at best, even while using Sig parts (reports of light primer strikes all the way up to cracked frames are not uncommon with P320s). M9s get an unfair shake in the minds of a lot of soldiers who carry them since the government used cheap after market parts for repair and not genuine Beretta parts thus causing a lot of reliability problems. The M9 design is solid, it's reliability is well tested and has been shown to outpace the P320 in reliability when both use factory parts (even Military Arms Channel's torture test showed that the M9A1 was more reliable than a P320). So, imagine what will happen when after market parts start getting used in P320 M17s. 3) The driving factor for picking the P320 was cost projections. Here's the joke. The P320 M17 program is now over $500 Million. So, the US military essentially picked a pistol that is reliably inferior and functionally equal to the M9A3 and $200 Million dollars more than the most expensive estimate for upgrading the Berettas. Good job bureaucracy!

@@TheOwenMajor Lol. Really though, there is a difference between a cheap knock off and the factory spec part. Take aftermarket steel M9 magazines and compare them to Beretta magazines. Night and day difference in performance. Aftermarket mags cause stoppages every couple rounds and don't lock the slide back when empty. Beretta mags have none of these issues and work flawless. Just one example.

@@f308gtb1977 ilcct instructor, it's amazing you could use so many words and be so wrong on the facts! I have the report from the trials of the Beretta m9, and I also have the report for the m17 trials. In all the tests that were common to both the Beretta m9 and Sig m17- the Sig was more reliable with higher MRBS and MRBF. That's documented fact. Please provide a link to a credible, verifiable, gov't issued statement that says the m17 program's costs more than doubled due to something negative, and not because they decided to buy more pistols, parts, or ammo to equip the USMC, Navy, AF, and CG. Also, your opinion on the civilian p320 is way off because the p320 has shown to be VERY reliable, with minimal reports of broken FCU frames and grip modules. The p320 has been on the market for over 5 years now and it's been a huge success in every respect. You clearly have a bias against the Sig p320/m17, and you're using debunked info to bash it.

If I was patrolling I would be pissed if I only had a handgun. However, when I was actually treating patients the rifle was a damned nuisance.
