Sig Sauer M-17 review: The Army knows what it's doing

My take on the M17 by Sig Sauer, with and without the Deltapoint Pro optic

    I've been shooting for a number of years and I don't think i will ever understand people complaining about safteys. I've never had one fail and its just added security. If you don't want a saftey don't engage it. Problem solved.

    Me either. People are babies… Never Happy… They act like you have to train and train and train if they aren’t used to it. I get my guns loaded with features. Don’t like it don’t engage it. Seems weird to have blank spots where a feature would be. Like getting a car with blank switches. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Reviewers act like they get in the way. As if they are going to actual battle…🤔🧐

    I have a sig p320 compact and a Beretta 92x. I find they are both very good pistols but I find the Beretta to be more accurate than the P320 but not a lot. I'm very happy with either. The Beretta shoots better but weights a ton more than the Sig.

    I recently qualified as a Navy small arms instructor. I qualified at a very fun time. Our aircrew carry the M11. The navy will be getting the M18 which means I will only have one handgun to deal with. My students are usually split 50/50 between the M9 and the M11, some like one and some like another. The M9 is a fantastic pistol, but I am extremely excited to see these changes.

    Jen farmer While the Sig may not be that good, my point was that this state has prevented any new firearms from becoming available. Even the same gun with updated features, mechanics or safety will not make the list. The purpose is to phase out guns towards an outright ban.

    Excellent review! 👏🏼 Personally, I am very pleased with my civvie version of the M17. I did change the original factory frame for the Wilson Combat modular frame. I also changed the original curved trigger for an Apex advanced flat trigger shoe. I haven't experienced any issues, no hiccups, no complains. I got a reliable handgun, very accurate, with an improved trigger and ergonomics. I love the military Sig Sauer platform for personal protection, security and home defense. I easily carry the M17 concealed in a OWB Kydex holster here in Texas. Yes, it can easily be done with an OWB Kydex holster. I do it on regular basis.

    Another great video. The M17 is outstandng. Spot on as far as the use of the pistol in the military. From my experience in the US Army Infantry, not a lot of real training is on the pistol. It seems to have improved over the years, but in reality the US Army pistol training pretty much sucks overall. Also, for anyone wanting to cowitness irons, go with the DPP rear factory sight and a Dawson .400 front. Would like to see you cover the P320 professional series since you are LE.

    I just got one and I’m itching to take it out to the range. First off I wanna say that it is one of the best looking pistols out there. And for the safety, my first bid was for one with a manual safety but they’re so hard to find in stock anywhere that I ended up paying a really good price for one without a safety and 2 extra 21 round mags when I got the chance.

    Excellent point. I think when you combine the element of change with the fact that Glock is playing second fiddle despite their use and success with SOCOM units, you have a lot of negativity being stirred up unjustly and frankly a lot of it is from unqualified individuals.

    I agree. And when people point out that something broke in the military trials it’s like hmmm who would have thought that the military would break something? I mean they literally take the product if a $40 billion program and take it out and break it on purpose. That is what the military does and anyone trashing Sig for the military breaking their pistols has no clue how rough the military is on it’s tools.

  • @reachblowsdick7222

    @reachblowsdick7222

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@@thefreeman8791 - The military broke the M17 but couldn't break the G19x, and Sig is not to blame? The military wanted a cheap pistol that was "good enough", not most reliable. They didn't care about "modularity" because if they did the G19x wouldn't have made it to the front door before testing even began, yet it was a finalist. Pistols don't win wars, they hardly ever see combat use. Even terrorist like ISIS who don't have the billion dollar budget of the U.S. Army use rifles and hardly any pistols. Why would the military spend an extra $100 million for a sidearm that won't really see combat? A soldier hardly uses all the rounds in one magazine during actual combat, if that's the case a cheap $150 Hi-Point sold at Academy could do the job Glock, Beretta and Sig are doing for the military. The military wanted a good enough to pass cheapest lowest bidder and got it with Sig. When Volkswagen built a factory in Mexico, do you think it was because Mexicans are the world's finest auto builders? NO! Mexico offered the lowest and cheapest acceptable quality to spit out as many cars as possible. This is all about money, NOT what pistol is the best for the soldiers. A lot of Army big shots got some lovely bonus gifts for Christmas, compliments of Sig Sauer ;) I'm glad Glock got a dose of their own medicine. Glock is by far the greediest, selfish bunch of assholes in the gun community, and the Army threw that right back in their faces. It's just too bad Glock make incredibly reliable pistols.

    This is the burst video that I have seen of yours. You got a new sub here. But on this video... one of the things that these people who complain about a failure of the Sig because it broke while the military was testing it must have no clue how much the military abuses their tools. I mean they get handed a prototype that would cost billions of dollars to produce and the first thing they do is take it out and break it.

    I think it’s a great pistol. I was first issued a 1911A1 as an 11C. Later carried a M9 on 2 deployments. I’ve fired hundreds of thousands of rounds through pistols as a civ cop instructor and in the Army. I bought an M17 after I retired...it is the best pistol the Army has ever used. However, unless the Army starts to actually train those who carry a pistol, it’s just a decoration. No wars have ever been won with a pistol.

    My 320 xCompact is very accurate and reliable. I've put over 2000 rounds through it on the original springs and have not yet had one issue, going to see how far I can push these springs so I know how often I genuinely have to change them out as the maintenance schedule is always meant to have you buying parts you don't need, well before you need them. That said with the Wilson Combat grip module and the Romeo 1 Pro, this is the perfect EDC for me and listen I know it's subjective but I've never carried something so comfortable, accurate and reliable and while Sig is known to do some testing on their initial buyers before they work out all the bugs, if you purchase a model a year or so after it drops? You can know you're pretty much getting a top of the line firearm.

    First let me say. I like alot of pistols. Everybody has a preference. If you Glock . . go for it. FNS . . great choice. Shoot what works for you. Now, that being said, the Sig P320 platform has been my favorite. I like the ergos, accuracy, recoil impulse and love my P320 compact. It has the OD green grip module, Apex flat trigger and Ameriglo night sights. I train vigoriously with this pistol. Thousands of rounds . . brass, steel, reloads, shit ammo . . . doesn't matter . . it eats them all. A great, great pistol. My primary EDC. I really enjoy this pistol.

    I've been a Glock fanboy since the Gen 2 and have owned dozens of them in different sizes and calibers. Someone who's opinion I really respect told me I HAD to get a p320. Not that I should, but that I had to. So I did, I bought a compact. I thought I would hate the modularity of it, Glock includes the backstraps you need for adjustment. But with the 320 you have to buy a new grip. First off, the p320 medium grip is about as big as the Glock with no back strap. So the small grip is actually small. But it's also insanely more comfortable than the glock. The angle is right and there's no Glock bump. Plenty of my Glocks have been bought and sold several times because of financial need. But with the p320, I can throw on a full size slide and rock and roll. It's way harder to justify buying another two or three pistols to fill any niche when you can simply buy the few parts you need for what you want. The Glock 19 is still my daily carry. But I'm putting about 200 rounds a week through my 320 as my schedule permits, and it'll soon replace the Glock.

    I own all 3 firearms in your presentation and I am law enforcement trained. I like the manual safty especially coming from the 1911. With appropriate training it's not an issue an helps midigate a neglect discharge. With regards to the physical loaded chamber, if you need to shoot at night a visual loaded chamber indicator is useless but a tactile loaded chamber indicator is very useful. With regards to the night sight, I agree with there, they are great !!! I was not sure about the extended 21 round magazine. But I purchased a few and I like them very much. I carry the gun with the manual safety typically disengaged. Agree with you on the PVD. Like the pellet gun too very much. In general I like this handgun very much, although I'm not a fan of 9mm in any of its loading. FYI - on the SIG Web site you can go to the P320 / M17 area and input the serial # of your firearm and it will indicate if your gun has been or needs to be updated. Enjoyed your presentation, you are a SME (Subject Matter Expert)

SIG P320C = *_SOLD IT_* SECOND I bought a *Glock 19 Gen. 5* _Late version_ - The latest version of the G19 that has no magazine cut out and forward slide serrations. _Observations_ - Very, very reliable with no malfunctions or jams ever - Simple gun with few parts - The Glock has a good trigger if you like feed back in your triggers - I love it's weight (23.64 oz) & dimensions RESULT When it came out I checked it out BUT did not like the cut out on the front of the grip. I’m an MP with many years of Beretta experience, now turned PSD. Before I left for the Middle East... I bought a P320, with no safety (that’s ridiculous), compact version in 2017, at Fort Bliss PX (before they called it the M18). Mine does not have the drop fix and I’m hesitant to send it in for the voluntary recall (but that’s a whole separate issue, maybe). Now that I’m back state side... I spoke to Sig Sauer customer service to ask about an M17 full size barrel and slide upgrade, but the customer service rep told me that they were not available, yet. Is that even true? I bought the P320 for conceal carry and with the idea that I would be able to upgrade and switch to full size, for range time and full combat transition drills with my AR15 for personal use, when I’m not training with my unit doing the same. You know, practice. What say you? Is my early version P320 that much different from the final version M17, that I can’t find parts in the spirit of a “modular system?”

  • @jhelmsing

    My .02 is the "modular design" is a marketing crock. I know exactly zero people who switch out the fcu with other guns depending on their needs. Most just buy two guns or whatever the case is. I've yet to actually hear of a department switching out a single components (i.e. the slide) due to damage or something like that. Matter of fact, for legalities a lot of departments are very iffy about changing out individual components on a gun (barrel matched to fcu serial number, etc) It's a good design and concept but just doesn't seem to actually be used the way it's advertised. If it were me, I'd trade the P320 in on the M17. There are some changes to be had, and the sights specifically are different.

    Thanks for the heads up and for replying to my inquiry. So, it turns out. I was actually looking to buy a second one, that being a full size M17. But I seriously do not want a safety. But the PX only had the safety models by the time I got back from the ME in late 2018. And was hoping to take full advantage of the “modular system.” Thus, not having to buy several pistols. Even save some money or the need to store various weapons. Besides. I’m currently allocating funds for a new S&W TRR8 and Mossberg 590A1 combat shotgun, that I’m picking up at my local Air Force Base, just to tool around and have some go-to weapons for home defense, here in California, where I’m from. Also, easier to accessorize in the current political climate, here in the People’s Republic of Kalifornistan. But it still doesn’t affect me since I have a LEOSA. Anyway. I might start looking at selling or trading in, if I cannot find parts for my early version P320. As long as it doesn’t come with a safety. Thanks and happy shooting.

    @@Joe-rx7ht - - - Parts for MY and your p320compact are easy to get, and you have nothing to worry about. Also, one can now buy a p320-m17 pistol _without_ the manual safety, go to the Sig webpage for the sku#. You can put a "p320 Full" caliber X-Change kit on your p320c with NO problems, it's just that Sig doesn't offer an m17 X-Change kit yet. You can swap out grip modules, slide assemblies, and use the longer mags, on your p320c. I think you might be confused because the modularity is great and not an issue. Send in your p320c for the voluntary upgrade- it usually results in a better trigger feel, and will also fetch more money if you ever want to sell it.

    Other than collecting purposes i wouldn't buy the M17 over the standard p320. Nobody makes aftermarket sights for it, so you're stuck with the stock sights, the thumb safety makes it incompatible with standard Sig grip modules, and the LCI prevents you from you using caliber exchange kits. The whole modularity aspect of the p320 is basically fucked with the m17 Oh, and the thumb safety makes it incompatible with Apex trigger kits too.

    @@jhelmsing True about weight. Plus, DA/SA guns will always be 3-4 oz more than a striker gun because of the weight of the hammer, beefier trigger bar, and more solid chassis to keep those components solidly in place through the heavy DA pull. I personally think it was a mistake to go to a striker gun as general military issue unless they did much more training. Give it a year or two, after a couple of NDs from inadequately trained guys the general order will come down to carry the M17 with an empty chamber. A trigger system like HK's LEM, Sig's DAK, or even the DAO of the Sig P250 would have been better for general issue.

    We've noticed a difference since the "drop fix" on our duty guns as far as the civilian P320's. My department was a very early adopter of the P320 and we had two main issues: chronic failure to extract on three guns (one was mine) and a first round issue when loading the mags to full capacity. I've noticed a change in the extractor system and also that little lip on the slide has been relieved and recountoured in newer models. For the past year or so our guns have ran like tops, so I'd say they are pretty well ironed out.

  • @jhelmsing

    @jhelmsing

    5 жыл бұрын

    😆 LOL what?! Bad news for you bud? I have zero idea what on Earth you are talking about regarding "not an M17". This is a commercial M17 taken directly out of the box with the SKU and all of the other M17 specific details I cover in the video. I did not ever allude to this being an actual military issued M17 or a commemorative if that is what you are referring to as I refuse to shell out the obscenely inflated price they are asking for that gun. I'd say the fact that I sourced this without a safety and the black controls should be the only clues you need for that. Also be aware that Sig regularly updates and changes guns mid model, so basing "authenticity" on some obscure arbitrary slide cut is very risky and more than likely completely inaccurate. I've had about a dozen P320's and nearly every one had a different slide milling on the inside and various other small changes as Sig continued to improve them along the way. They are notorious for this. I just picked up a P320RX that had a completely redesigned barrel that looks very close to the M17. Even the newest issued M17's (which I have indeed handled and fired) are shipping with black controls. The non ejection side says "9mm" if I recall correctly, but I don't have any worries what so ever that this isn't an authentic commercial M17...

    Good review overall, but you didn't even touch the main difference from the M9: The Beretta is designed to be carried revolver-style with a long, heavy first trigger pull IN LIEU OF a manual safety. Though it isn't my preference, I respect it as a logical alternative. OTOH, the military insists on carrying everything on "safe" (best of both worlds for preventing a negligent discharge / worst of both worlds for achieving a purposeful discharge). With the M9 that means a (slide-mounted, therefore hard to reach, and wrong- [extensor-muscle] direction) safety PLUS the looong 12lb trigger pull vs. a frame-mounted M17 safety that falls naturally under the thumb and operates naturally (flexor muscle) leading to a short 5lb trigger pull. In any pool of recruits, there may be one or two individuals who have trained extensively and exclusively with Berettas, safety-on. Physics and anatomy dictate that everyone else will get a faster, more accurate first hit (the one that counts) with the M17. It wouldn't even be close.

    Buy the .40 barrel and carry hollows. That goes with any carry pistol. There are a select few (very pricey) 9mm rounds that can sort of compete with a standard 40 but why would you want to have to have a particular round to give you as much lethality as what the 40 offers. You're not going to be engaging home Invaders or armed robbers in the bank at 75 yards so go with the bigger round. If you ever have to use your pistol it's most likely going to be short range.
