Siege of Vienna - Tunnel War - Part 2 - Extra History

📜 Siege of Vienna: Tunnel War - The siege presses on from its initial active resistance phase to the long, routine drudgery of survival on the inside and elaborate defense building on the outside: earthworks and revelins designed by Georg Rimpler. Meanwhile, the Ottomans prepared to attack via gunpowder prepared inside mining tunnels.

Winter was coming-that’s what had doomed Suleiman when he’d tried to take Vienna back in 1529. The bitter cold. The Grand Vizier swore history would not repeat itself. Because soon, his mining tunnels would be ready. Get early access to episodes at bit.ly/EHPatreon

@Cheetah Man Don't forget the American Civil war or the ground conflicts in the Russo-Japanese war either. Pretty much every major war for the latter half of the 1800s blared warning signs on how bad the first world war would be. Sadly the Franco-Prussian war (the one outlier) was the one everyone looked at for how it would go. But going back to mining tunnels in war, look up the battle of the crater in the US civil war. A plan by the Union to blow a giant whole in the Confederate lines that actually got screwed up by one stupid (and probably racist) change in the plan that could have had a major effect on history if done right.

just want to say something about that the part with them getting lucky that the wall fell during the changing of the guards. that was by design. the Ottomans specifically chose that time in the hope that, that way, the explosion would kill much more defenders. it's just that this didn't work as they had hoped. so, it was not Viennese luck, but Ottoman miscalculation.

  • @maximilianmaier1085

I know many people here in austria would hate me for that, but i am really curious about what would happened if the ottomans won at vienna. I would say that the defenders would have been imprisoned and the leaders would be executed. Maybe the ottomans would've tried to show the people of europe how the austrian emperor fled from the fight and how the leaders of the vienna defenders treated the citizens and especially the non catholics before the ottoman victories in hungary.

@@JonathanLundkvist I'd say it's *kinda* both. The first stage of Vraks under Lord Commander Zuehlke is closer to classic WW1: artillery barrages, mass-charges, and two trenchlines grinding against one another with sporadic mining by engineers. The latter phase under Lord Marshall Kagori is closer to the Siege of Vienna, with more emphasis on tunneling operations, and a mighty citadel under siege, its walls broken by a mine stuffed with explosives, and the grueling fight for the breach. It takes cues from both, but WW1 is more obvious since the Death Korps of Krieg is... well, the Death Korps. Any day not spent digging trenches or taking part in a massed charge alongside their gas-masked brethren against fortified machine gun positions, is a day wasted for them.

The title of the next episode explains a question I've had for a very long time. The game Age of Empires II: The Conqueror's Expansion, put wings on their Hussar light cavalry unit. I never got that upgrade because I thought the wings looked stupid, and I couldn't understand why they did that. I believe next week's episode is going to give me the explanation I've been looking for for 15 years. :)

An RTS based around the tunneling and counter-tunneling part of the siege could be pretty cool. You play as an officer directing the tunneling, trying to dig under the enemy's base and detonate explosives to destroy them, while also searching for enemy tunnels and trying to burn them down-ideally with enemy engineers inside.

This reminds me a story/lesson during history class. During the 100 years war a French Lord was besieged a captured English castle. The French lord decided to tunnel underneath and surprise the English forces by popping out of the courtyard and taking the castle. Some time passed and a French soldier appeared to inform his lord that the tunnel collapsed, revealing a longer tunnel. Supposedly the French Lord offered to crawl through the smallbtunnel. While crawling, he could only use a short sword and a torch to light the way. Some time passed, and the French Lord saw a light ahead. As he moved closer, he noticed that the one there could only carry a short sword and a light. And that other tunnel traveler was the English General who was protecting thebcastlem.
