Sicily (1961)

Sicily, Italy.
L/S of Mazzaro Bay; M/Ss of people eating at an open air restaurant of a hotel in Taormina. Interesting C/U of a road mirror that shows a view of the road and town in reverse as three people on a scooter drive past.
L/S of a tourist bus parked at Cartel Mola, a point on the island which is 4000 ft above sea level; a cafe in the square has a sun-terrace on the roof. Various shots of the ruins of a Roman theatre; Mount Etna can be seen in the background. M/S of Italian (?) tourists as a man takes a photograph.
M/S of a Roman soldier puppet as commentator talks of the local art of puppetry. M/S of a woman looking at souvenirs outside shops in the Courso Umberto; C/U of carved and painted panels showing battles of Sicily; M/S of a small painted cart which the area is famous for.
In Taormina, we see another female tourist looking at a large cart with carved and painted panels. Another woman in a ludicrous straw hat looks at the feathered plumes of a horse's head-dress and costume. Several shots show two Italian girls wearing 200-year-old costumes from a museum; they walk about a pretty mountaintop garden and look rather embarrassed.
Various shots of Club Meditterane, a holiday camp at Cefalu. Instead of chalets they have grass rush huts, and the visitors all eat outside at communal tables with large umbrellas. M/Ss of people eating spaghetti at a table; one couple are in swimming gear. Another couple recline on the scrubby grass by the huts. A girl in a patterned bikini rubs sun lotion into her chest while lying on a wall by the sea. People are gathered around a grass-hut bar under it's sunshade; it looks very hot. L/S of the camp with the sea beyond.
Note: I am unable to find definitive spellings for some of the locations in this story. Cuts exist - see separate record.

My great grandfather lived in Caccamo (home of the Norman castle) until they immigrated to New Orleans in the late 1800s. They were there for the Sicilian lynchings, and fled to New Jersey at the hight of the massacre. Although I’m American first- I’m so grateful for the struggles of my Sicilian ancestors. 💕

Imagine being gifted during a business convention only with what looks like only now a work of art which looks whole lot like an old fashioned canon. Instead of what you and your colleagues back home were hoping to buy a lot of Where would you put it as a sign of good will most to all back home? Wouldn't you like one to donate it to the local public museum? Or would you like one to put in your farm yard just purchased whifrom an agent while waiting for approval at a local bank instead?

What is more surprising is how Sicily is today compared to a few decades ago, with many immigrants coming from african countries convulsed a long time ago.
