For me, the original _Sicario_ was a piece of art. A remarkable film. By contrast, _Sicario 2_ isn't nearly as refined, and it has its share of issues... but I still thought it was a perfectly solid, slick follow-up. I really enjoyed the development of the Alejandro character, the stark and oppressive tone, the elements of intrigue and general story. (Far fetched though it may be at times.) If the original was a perfect 10 out of 10, _Soldado/Day of the Soldado_ is easily a very good 8 out of 10 for me.

Far too much plot convenience. Boy just happens to randomly bump into Benicio in a parking lot and then just happens to recognize him later on. Kind of a stretch.

I undoubtedly am in the minority here, but Sicario II affected me more than its predecessor. I saw it twice, and I have to say, personally, I liked it more. I don't necessarily think it's a better film, but I was more compelled by its story.

Soldado is better....it doesnt just build up and has atmosphere,it actually delivers the suspense, violence and punches Sicario promised but never fully delivered. And Benicio is the heart of this world, him in the lead instead of Blunt is so crucial and wonderful,to me,the reason it works so well.

I liked it more, bc I liked that Brolin and Del Toro were the center of the film, and they’re both great in their characters as morally bankrupt mercenaries. I loved the set piece with the deaf man. It was a humanizing touch I wasn’t expecting from a film teeming with violence. The supporting cast was great too, especially that American kid who ends up getting wrapped up in the Sicario world. I liked the first one a lot, and wasn’t expecting much bc Blunt, Villeneuve, and Deakins were not involved, but I have to say, I think it might be better than the first one. I also love that they brought back Jeffrey Donovan (aka, the guy in the Buddy Holly glasses) and gave his character a little more screen time.

@@jayfolk Keener's character says they were homegrown terrorists near the end, the capture and psychological torture, killing the Somali's family was totally unnecessary, but a convenient route to tie ISIS to the cartels.

I suppose the inherent problem is that there is little sense of mystery about del Toro's character. A key lynchpin of the first film was the tension created by not knowing who he was or what was motivating him until late in the story & the ending was truly shocking. With that in mind they would have felt they had to go for balls-to-the-wall action with the sequel.

100% agree. For the first half I thought it was chugging along quite nicely (to my surprise), then it descended into run of the mill thriller territory. I raised my eyebrow so high I could feel it coming off my head at one particular scene so I'm quite sure it's the same scene Mark speaks of. Sicario, one movie that really didn't need a sequel.

I loved this film more than the first. What a masterpiece. Their's so many questions left unanswered. What happened to the girl? Is benicio training the kid to become like him? Will benicio find the girl again? Will benicio become friends with brolin again? This movie is byfar better than the 1st one. Emily Blunt was a crybaby and was unwilling to do what it takes to get the job done. The world is full of greys. Not black and white. I'm looking forward to the sequel. Even though they may not make it cause this film made less money.

Google the original shooting draft of Sicario. That script sucked by comparison to the final film. It's so much over-explaining and bad dialogue. Denis Villeneuve must have spent awhile reworking it to make the film work. Really a testament to the ability of a good director.

I mean...the first Sicario film was mind blowing, one of the best films I had ever seen. So I went into the cinema to see Soldado not expecting something as great as that and also thinking there was absolutely no need for a sequel but I was actually surprised because it was quite nicely done. It's very different from the first one but still if you look at it separately it isn't bad at all. Although, I have to agree with Kermode that toward the end there were several scenes that were just so cliche and painful to watch.

Put off seeing the first for a while. Watched it last year and loved it (yes, the most tense traffic jam in the history of cinema was incredible). I put off seeing the sequel for a while because I wasn't sure about the omission of Emily Blunt, Villeneuve and Deakins. Watched it last night and loved it, possibly slightly more than the first. Whilst I loved Blunt's character, Del Toro's character has a greater pull for me. I was genuinely upset at (spoiler alert) 'the scene in the desert'. I don't share Kermode's "oh come on!!" reaction here, however. I thought that the scene worked. I really hope that if there is a third movie or more, then they don't go down the Mission Impossible or similar route. Sicario's appeal, I feel, is that we on the outside of this world can believe that this is real, that this world exists. That's what makes it more disturbing

  • @TotalWarrior1993

    @TotalWarrior1993

I think you’ve missed the whole point of her character in the first film. She’s meant to subvert expectations - you see her in her own environment at the start within the fbi and then she’s brought into the super secret black ops world. A typical narrative (where they have just inserted a female character for the sake of it) would be that she grows into this role and turns into a super badass - high fiving del toro and brolin at the end as the cartel goes up in flames in the background. Instead of this cliche you’re given the feeling from the moment it starts that she is out of her depth and guess what it doesn’t get any better. She’s chewed up and spat out by the experience with brolins character admitting that her involvement with FBI was just to give them (CIA) a pretence to operate within the USA. This linked in with the wider narrative of the film being about how deep America willing to sink in the name of ‘protecting’ itself. Emily blunt represents the American ideal of honour, justice and due process. Brolin and del toro are the darker reality - as they say - she isn’t a wolf and this is a town of wolves now. Same reason why she shouldn’t be in the sequel. It wouldn’t make any narrative sense.

The film is flawed and the ending feels tacked on but I what I hated most the the post production de-colourisation/saturation, which is horrible, it just drains the film of any life and instead of having a vibrant film, it just is overblown, depressing and over stylised.

Yeah it looked like crap in that regard, as 50% of films made today do. One of the most overused 'polishes' that films tend to go through. It didn't help in this case that it was following up a film shot by a master. The original stood out for its cinematography, with several standout scenes (convoy, sunset desert trek before the tunnel shootout) and it was glaringly obvious that this was lesser craftsmen aping the best in the business.

i felt this was not a separate film at all and in a sense a part two of a three part story which I hope has a conclusion. The ending to this film really gave me that impression. As a stand alone yeah not as good as the first but as a continuation of the first film then every bit as good. This film has new mediators in a four way connection to the films scenario. Perspectives of the operations leader, the out for vengeance broken crime dad, the cartel young princess and the young man falling into the orbit of the cartel on the US side of the border. The actual story if fully observed is not some anti immigration thing in the slightest and really sets up a more believable geographical sense of reality to the mirror world to ours in which it is set. Guess what the USA does anything but save the day or get its own way, sorry spoiler but just such nonsense over so called "in the news sensitive rubbish".

Got to agree with Mark's comments regarding Emily Blunt! I thought Isabella's actress was very good, and could well be a star in the future. If they'd taken it more from her point of view, using her as Emily Blunt's character was in the first, it would have been much better. I think the setup with the terrorists was weak, and they could have got to the same story elements in a better way. What I did love though was the sequence with the sign language. Bravo all round there.

Two different films, two different narratives. Kinda the point of the separate story in the same world exercise. Blunt was the enemy of effectiveness in the first film. The old civil world order. Point of the terrorists plot line was the politicos will draw anything together to get what they want- Keener's character says neat the end of the movie, they were homegrown, no Somali torture or extrajudicial killing necessary, but it allowed CIA to go to war with the cartels.

I don’t think Mark is correct in his descriptions of this film. Matthew Modine is not seen to be “slimy“ but draconian in the few scenes he is in. There’s also no mention of travel bans or the border wall.

I just saw this movie yesterday and I have to admit I was a little disappointed. The first Sicario was a masterpiece! Everything went together well and the ending was perfect. However this film didn't follow the script like you thought it would. It ending up being more about the girl then going after the drug cartels. Also the ending looked like it was just thrown in to end the film and not well thought out.

Really enjoyed the film upon second viewing. Very nuanced. I’m one of the rare people who probably will enjoy Soldado more than the first; I couldn’t stand the naivety of Emily Blunt’s character.

I wouldn't say it was naivety so much as an unyielding rigidity to her programming and inability to adjust to a change of context.

I was honestly worried Sicario 2 would be the same cheapened dumb action movie that Rambo First Blood Part 2 and the rest of the franchise became. But luckily I was wrong. Soldado did noy descend to dumb action film. Great movie.

You absolutely need Emily BLunt in the first one to journey into that world as an outsider through her eyes, but by the end you realize the actual protagonist of the film, the one with motivation whose struggle and goal gets achieved by the end is Del Toro. If you're into this kind of bleak merciless morally grey action thrillers it's perfectly fine. Criticizing a film because it's good and not great is not much of a criticism.

spoilers film is disjointed... from relating to the extremists in the first act, the second to starting a war by kidnapping the daughter, then meaninglessly wiping the slate clean due to the change of heart by the D.O.D director. Even on a comparison level, it felt like the latest Bourne movie. Ending was a huge time gap, what happened to the girl taken by Matt, did we have any contact between him and Alejandro, how did he survive his wounds, etc, etc. It just felt like, what you saw in the trailers, everything else was purposefully put in pieces there to fill it. Then it cuts to him closing the door. Aftermath, the consequences? Nadda. Why even have a scene of him stopping on the road then continuing on? Shouldve cut, move on to a hospital scene. 3/5 still worth to watch. Just not above $20

sarunghakan feng It makes sense if you follow the storyline. The focus was on the extremists at first but they shifted gears to who was responsible for letting those players through the border. Remember, they didn't fly in so they had to cross bodies of water and borders? Lastly, the slate had to be wiped clean because of the optics. The girl witnessed that these US agents wiped out the Mexican Federal agents and possible other cartel players. Was it necessary? Probably not.

Saw it yesterday.... It made me think, just as The Last Jedi (that I thought great... but) Denis Villeneuve is a RARE talent. This one lacks the construction and the clever inverse of the first one, and doesn't have the same talent to build tension. Here the music is used but not as cleverly as in the first one. But all in all it was a good action movie and Thriller and I think what hurt it most was the build up to a third one. If they make it it will be the deciding factor on whether this one was great or just good enough. And while it looks cliche, I can tell you that certains parts of latin america are in a worse state.

She's is not one of those guys who gets her hands dirty. I mean what would they have accomplish by putting her in this film? She is not a wolf.

Big Up My Brother! (*Spoilers*sort of)I keep hearing these critics say 'Emily Blunt were our eyes and ears through the first film' and 'she was our moral compass.' But if that is indeed the case, she proved how weak and ineffective the conventional approach to this so called 'war on drugs' truly is. She was a pawn in the bigger scheme of things. So if this is true, she was just a means to an end, then the audience and the critics who relied on her character to guide them through the film must be as well. Alejandro Gillick was true subject of both films, In my humble opinion. I pray for a bourne identity series treatment.

The movies politics frustrate me it’s a lot like when Sheridan cast an Asian actress to play the native woman who gets raped in Wind River... it’s like I understand the pragmatic business concept sense of doing the choices he doo, but something about them doesn’t sit well with me..: I am happy to be alive at the same time as him however and to see him evolve as a writer

The first film was loud, because it was yelling at us a message of existential dread over the war on drugs. The second one tries to mimic that, but just ends up incoherently screaming. It was a pale imitation of its predecessor and not worthy of the name.

james84 - I’m with you. I wasn’t expecting much, but as a MoviePass member who lives two short blocks away from the cinema, I use my membership the way I used to use Netflix; as a way to check out stuff I’m only mildly interested in (since they slashed a lot of movies from streaming). Because I wasn’t expecting much, I was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I actually liked it more, even though it’s not as sophisticated as the first one. It’s in some ways more horrific and tense and weird that you end up rooting for morally bankrupt characters. I thought the cinematography, direction, score and acting were all top rate. I honestly couldn’t tell that the principle figures were missing. The tone and feel matched perfectly. If anything, some may find the political themes a little too close to home in ratcheting up paranoia and xenophobia. But I can separate the art from the artist and it doesn’t feel like right wing propaganda in the end.

Backmasking The story is not as nearly as good, and not as original. But the basis of the story is still interesting and the action is thrilling and overall I think it's better paced than the first film. I thought the first film was at times a bit slow, but with some amazing scenes now and then. Sicario 2 is more evenly paced but without reaching to the heights of the first film.

It's a shame that so many reviewers can't evaluate the film without the lens of politics. The movie doesn't "exploit" political themes. The movie is so far removed from the political themes that they don't even exist as a relevant theme in this movie. Thematically, this movie is about the decisions that people make to hold power over others, and the way those decisions harm the world, especially children.
