Much thanks for these Szell uploads. What an astonishing control he had over his orchestra. All in perfect balance, making textures as transparent as in chamber music. Carefully calibrated dynamics throughout, and superb phrasing too. He may have been a really difficult person to work with, but what beautiful results!

+Daniel Tarr No, of course not. But it was George Szell who took a previously unheralded, unacclaimed orchestra and made them into one of the finest in the world.

A fine balanced and wonderful crystalline performance-Szells way to conduct with clarity and purity is perfect for this masterpiece- an overwhelming rendition!!! ( By the way there MUST be a school where people get educated to cough always on the quiet parts of a composition!!!!:-(( )

Not just finely balanced, but wonderfully taut - he only lets the tension fall away in the closing pages. Great sound too. Probably the best "En Saga" I've heard; top of my list! Thank you

Would be ideal background music for a sasquatch documentary.

It's perfect, but a bit too under control (as always with Szell). I prefer Ormandy's version.

Thank you for pointing out an alternative, and I agree with you in that I think I prefer Ormandy, it really is unlike any other recording I have heard. While I started with the performance by Ashkenazy, then went on to Osmo Vanska and the Lahti Symphony before finding this performance by Szell, with each one getting better in my opinion, I think Ormandy's may be my favorite, even though I am not an especially big fan of his.
