She has the sweetest little voice. My cat was not a lap cat for the 1st 3 years and maybe 4 years before he sought lap time. He used to sit in a little cat bed and I'd put the whole bed on my lap to get him used to the idea. Lap = hugs and belly rubs and chin scratches. Now, he demands lap time. Sweet Dunder man. Such a good brother.

Good attitude, but I'm surprised it took so long for the cat to adjust and take advantage of your caring. Seems like he would want to have the attention sooner and over that period of years was actually depriving himself.

He quickly liked pets and even belly rubs but only on the floor. So he was getting a lot of affection that way. Very chill, not aggressive but took a hard pass on 1. Being picked up 2. Laps aka cat trampoline because as soon as he touched a lap "boing" off he went 3. Wet food. 4. Getting on the couch. We respected his boundaries for 1, 2 and 4 as much as possible. Tried many brands of wet food but he rejected them all and so we found a better dry food. Noticed he was always wanting to be close and happy to be in his bed so we gradually moved the bed closer, then onto the couch, then bed on laps, then no bed but on his upper body, then ta-da!! It really was a long process. We were not an experienced pet family so we are no experts

@@TCJA1970 Wow, picky cat requiring a lot of gradual socializing, it seems. To reject so much food seems really picky if a cat is hungry. I'm no expert either.

I think that's Key...letting the animals communicate and interact on their own terms. Never forcing it.

Dunder was the deal maker here. He showed Mose that she was safe, and loved, and cared for 💞💕💗 _TY_ for letting Mose to be herself. With all your patience, she just might surprise you one day, and becomes a lap cat.

How wonderful! I remember a very shy shelter cat. When it was announced that the shelter was closing and people were leaving, he visibly relaxed and groomed himself. Everyone wants the cats who poke them when they walk by. Thanks for taking Mose. If Mose had only known there would be a safe home and a great cat friend, Mose would have reached a paw out for you.

So interesting to hear how she's not a lap cat but definitely wanted to be around her human. That's exactly how our rescue was. Incredibly sweet, would jump on the couch to be next to you, or come for treats, but did not enjoy being picked up or overly petted. We had her till the day she passed and we loved her dearly. She was a great cat.

Definitely not all animals from a shelter are set and ready to go, they're not like little machines. I like how this adopter respected the cat's boundaries and gave her nothing but positive reinforcement. Good thing the other cat was a great ambassador and ice-breaker. 👌

My sister adopted 2 cats from the shelter who would've been euthanized because of their shyness. That was over 10 years ago. Beautiful and heartwarming story! 💕

We adopted a shy cat also. She hid for a month before coming out and greeting us or letting us pet her without us having to chase her down. She has always been gentle and purring all the time when picked up and petted. She loves talking and playing and pets, but she is not often a cuddler either like our other cat. But we love her. She is so sweet and fun. ❤

You have the perfect attitude, but you're gonna end up wrong: "She's not a lap cat." My boy and I just had our 4th anniversary. He was a stray and until a few weeks ago was never a "lap cat" either! Now he cuddles right up and is bummed when I get up! The depth of affection a cat will give over time is astonishing. All you have to do is love them as they are.

Moses and Dunder are absolutely gorgeous! I love how she said that it's not about me. It really shows how she puts the well-being of the cats before herself. Great love.❤️

Moses will get there. She's already made so much progress. With both my shy and cautious/anxious rescue cats, i found that gently petting and then kissing and then hugging them during their nap time, slowly and over time got them used to my scent and my gentle affection in a non confrintational way, probably even unconsciously for them. Also, gently talking to them and stroking their backs a little bit during meal times. But the gentle approach while they slept is what helped the most

What a heartwarming story!

This warmed my heart. Thank you for giving Mose a beautiful home and a new best friend named Dunder. This is what all our animal friends deserve 💙🦋🐾

Opon adopting my shy cat, she spent 10 days in the closet. One day she was no longer in the closet, and i tore my apartment up and down to find her. I even called the microchip company and registered her as lost, because i looked *everywhere* Then i was 15 minutes into cooking a pizza in the oven, and she crawls out from a tiny space underneath the oven, because it was hot. She still is very shy two years later and she'll hide under my bed every time someone comes over. 😢

Nothing beats a good friend.

1 of my cats is like her. She's a sweet cat, but she was outside on her own for the first 2 years of her life. All her siblings got homes, so did the mother, but not her. My parents finally took her in one winter, but they didn't handle the introductions to our other cats properly (I was away from home at the time). She now stays in one half of the house away from the others except for one cat. She is not a lap cat. She occasionally will get on my lap, but she never stays. She doesn't like being held, but she will sleep on my bed with me. She's now been inside with us for 4 years and she still gets scared very easily. We really don't know what she went through. She's just 8lbs, and with her temperament we don't think she was inclined to defend herself. She probably just stayed hidden or on the move.

Awwww. Reminds me of my Simon, the shy one of two cats I got after their owner had passed away. He hid at first too. Neither he or his sister were lap cats, but after settling in, they'd both follow me around, and stay in their beds in reach of me when I was at my desk. After a few years, Simon was often under the covers, sleeping in my arms at night. Dulcy would cuddle up against my back. I really miss that.

How sweet. You, too, are the best.

I adopted a cat who i found had been hit in her past. She had also been isolated. She wanted my company but not pets. I learned if i didnt make direct eye contact with her and spoke quietly that i could approach her more easily. She did better with my other cats and over time learned she was safe. She recently passed sway at 19 and she was worth it all.

This is very sweet. Also, you might find she does eventually become a lap cat. My cat refused to sit on anyone's lap for the first three years after we rescued her from a shelter, then suddenly one day she started sitting on my lap and eventually she started sleeping on my back! She became very affectionate and cuddly. She even ran downstairs one day and randomly sat on the lap of a family friend, whereas she was scared of most people.

Thank you so much for giving her a home! I have a very shy cat and I have learned when to give him privacy and when to hold him. It takes time😻🙏❤️

We have some cats who're not into being lap cats, but they're still affectionate in their own unique ways. We've even had some cats who were shoulder cats, even jumping from the ground straight to our shoulders. We miss them dearly, but every new feline family member is unique and brings something new into our lives :3

She's not a lap cat NOW. I've rescued and adopted several ferals and it took some of them years to ever want lap time. One was 8 years old the first time he jumped in my lap. With cats like Mose, some of the satisfaction of having them in your life comes from that very slow-motion blossoming and oh my, it is SO wonderful when they finally trust you fully! Mose is a very lucky girl to be a foster fail with you and Dunder is such a great companion to help Mose learn that not all humans are like the bad people that must have hurt her in the past.

They are so sweet together!

I have a shy cat also Tuppance, she had spent 8 months alone with her sister in a one bedroom apartment. She allowed us to pet her in certain rooms, and slowly over 6 months she would allow us to pet her any where. She hated being picked up and never came on our lap. Fast forward 9 years she has now decided that she will lie on our laps. Tuppance is the most gentle soul we have ever met. We love her dearly.

one of our cats was apparently super super shy and was already about 2 years old and not adopted yet. after we did all the counseling, we went in to meet him and when i pet him and talked to him, and stoood up on his little cat shelf and literally stepped into my arms. everyone gasped. we would have adopted him whether he did that or not, but sometimes cats just need the right person (or i suppose in this case, cat) to get them out of their shell. thank you so much for adopting Mose and being patient and loving with her, and I'm so glad she has sweet little man Dunder to make her feel safe!
