Thank you for the video! I have recently also been looking at akadama again instead of regular active soils. I find that a lot of them are made for plants with a lot of nutrients and they lower the pH to at least 6 or more often 5.5 or sometimes even 5. I never thought much of it until I learned that regular nitrifying bacteria don't metabolise compounds anymore at a pH of 6 or lower. There are other species of acidic water bacteria but they are much less efficient. I noticed that in my pH 5.5 tanks my babies only ever survived if I fed bacter AE or dust food at least every day. But even then I only counted 14 babies from 4 pregnant females what should have been at least 40. So I assumed this was because there is no natural food in my tanks (there are also only 10 adults in my tank). I couldn't find akadama that easily so I went for red bee sand this time which promises a pH around 6.5. Very interested if that will result in a healthier system with more natural food or just the death of my shrimp because of the too high pH haha. I will keep on experimenting but so far it looks promising. Hope it works better for you as well! Greetings from the Netherlands!

Hello to Netherland - there are so many reasons why young shrimp die, that its hrad to tell on one tank - lots of testing/changing one factor each time. Powder food helps a lot, young shrimps that sometimes molt each day will need a lot of food to have energy. Maybe I should do a video on young shrimps survival rate :)

@@ShrimpTimeInt Yeah I am definately not sure this is the reason. I decided to test it out since all my neocaridina appear fine without supplements on pH of 7.5, of course they are very different but I thought it could be a small indication. My previous experiences with akadama and crystal red have been very good. We will see if this works or not. It would be amazing if you could do a video on the survival rate of young shrimps and all the tips & tricks you have learned to increase their survival rate!

I've been keeping CRS in akadama for years, the pH stays in the low 6s and no ammonia leech. I find it perfect for crystal shrimp.

great video about akadama soil. Unfortuantly, akadama is more expensive than ada amazonia in my area so i'll stick with ada amazonia for now and it's been working for me. Kerric is a great guy, chatted with him a few times, his shrimp look top notch!

Hi Shrimp time. Great informative videos. I have been watching you video on ugfs. What do you recommend the flow to be on the ugfs? As my new setup with ugfs with tanks cycling seem to be a little cloudy? I was thinking the flow was to high? Any help is appreciated Thanks

Blue dreams are Neocaridina cherry shrimp, they need to be kept at a neutral to slightly alkaline PH of 7-7.5 you cannot keep them in acidic conditions and should not have any buffering soils with them as they are not Caridina like crystal reds and will not survive in low PH and low KH conditions.
