Shrek Theory: Why Didn’t Puss Get Shrek’s Help?

Фильм және анимация

Today I want to break down why Puss in Boots didn’t get Shrek’s help when Death came after him! Instead of returning to Far Far Away when Puss discovered he only had one life remaining, he acted like he couldn’t go back to be with his friends, so what might have happened? Well I think Puss abandoned Shrek and Donkey in a similar way to how he abandoned his true love: Kitty Softpaws.

I think you're exactly right. Before _The Last Wish,_ Puss never knew how to express his fears and insecurities, even to his closest friends. The only thing he knew to do was run away and start a new. And even if he could return to Far Far Away by himself, he was afraid to confront them after having left them for so long.

I think the reason he didnt go back was for two reasons: 1. He had grown to be such a world renowned and famous legend that just like kitty soft paws he potentially left shrek and donkey in the dust 2. He didnt want them to see how scared and fragile he had become. When puss met shrek and donkey he have off a feeling of bravery, self confidence, and courage. After his mortality caught up with him along with death he became a shell of his former self and didnt want his friends to see him like that

You were certainly spot on. It is possible Puss decided to go back on his adventures, given Shrek and Donkey had their own families but couldn't go on these wild adventures as they once did. It was easy for Puss to simply run away from his problems, oppose to admitting to them and may have felt he couldn't return to Shrek and Donkey when being chased by Death. But only after his confrontation with Death, Puss was able to move past his "fears" and decided to return back to Far, Far Away to hopefully reunite with Shrek, Donkey and all his other friends.

Puss to me seems to show an avoidant personality in general. Not afraid to be the life of the party, showcasing loyalty and being there for those that need him, but always keeping those close to him an arms length away. People like that are very unlikely to lay bare their flaws and their troubles, even to those they love the most. Those issues have generally been used as a reason in the past for those once close to us to abandon us. So for that reason, we keep it to ourselves or leave the people close to us before they do it to us first. It's a conflict of shame from the idea of having to tell them or the fact that we are the one leaving for no good reason. Self-isolation has its own small yet twisted comfort if you can live with yourself.

It’s why Shrek and Puss’ lifestyles are very parallel with one another. Shrek may not have seemed Fame and fortune like Puss did, but both lived lonely lives in solitude and never let anyone into their thick layers so easily. Like when Donkey said that Shrek is afraid of his own feelings, I can say the same for Puss. He never liked to display insecurities, fear or vulnerability to even his closest of friends. Once Puss discovered his mortality, that shell he had wrapped around him his whole life (or his other eight) just came crashing down in seconds.

Maybe puss didn’t want to put Shrek and his family in danger. After all, this was the first ‘bounty hunter’ that actually made puss feel fear. Although he could have gone back to his mother in the orphanage or back to his friends in far far away, he decided to hide himself away in a new and unlikely location that the legendary puss in boot would go to, so he could lie low and be safe. Love your videos by the way! ❤

Or perhaps, there is a third, less cowardly, option. Puss KNOWS that both Shrek and Donkey are married and they both have children of their own now. Puss is down to his last life, and he is being hunted by a character who is LITERALLY DEATH INCARNATE and whose sole purpose is to KILL Puss and take his last remaining life for wasting his other lives. He is also under threat from these other villains because they are all trying to find this wishing star. We know from the Shrek movies that Puss pretty much considers Shrek and Donkey and their families to be HIS family. He is a hero now....he has honor. So I think he chose to go into hiding, rather than going to his friends, because he wanted to protect his friends from Death and the other villains. Because I am QUITE sure if Death Wolf KNEW that Puss had a family that he loved, Death would USE that information to force Puss to relinquish his last life....because Puss would do anything to protect his family from Death and Death could EXPLOIT this to get Puss to do what he wanted. It's classic Villain 101. He could threaten Puss's friends with literal death. Because we know that if Shrek and the others knew that Puss was in trouble....being hunted by Death, no less,....OF COURSE they would immediately want to help him and protect him and that would be putting them (and their children) in grave danger from Death and Goldilocks and the 3 bears and the other guy too. So Puss chose the honorable road, and now that Death has been vanquished and the danger has passed, Puss can now be reunited with his family in Far Far Away.

Here's my take: after becoming friends with Shrek, Puss began to open himself up to others more, slowly settle down and develop close relationships. Over time, seeing his friends become parents and be too busy for adventures, Puss decided that maybe it was time to settle down too with the one cat he truly loved. However, fear got the better of Puss, so he regressed and left everything behind to double down on being the legend, drowning his sorrows in parties, adventures, and adoration from stangers.

I feel like Puss may have left the swamp since after seeing all of his friends in Far Far Away become parents it’s quite possible he just either wanted more adventure or maybe to see if he could ever track down Kitty. But he eventually gave up and hid his sorrows in his legendary status and put everything else on the back burner. It’s why the fear of his mortality hit him very hard. He never liked expressing his insecurities with anyone. Like you said, even during Puss’ fine with Shrek he always feared expressing his vulnerable side similar to how Shrek was always insecure about being an ogre and lived his life as a loner too just like Puss did. I bet if there’s a Shrek 5, Shrek and Puss could definitely both open up to each other and just mention how it’s always difficult to show your vulnerable side to others. I think in a way, maybe Puss might look up to Shrek especially since Puss never had a male parental figure or one to look up to in his life. One person even wrote a fanfic of Shrek protecting and looking out for Puss like he is his son. There’s definitely a parallel between Shrek and Puss’ character arcs and I found see Puss bumped up to being the deuteragonist of a 5th Shrek film. When it comes to death being after him. Remember that Puss thought he was a bounty hunter most if the time. If Far Far Away is in the U.K., I think he would need a boat to cross the ocean to get from Spain to Far Far Away. Plus I think Puss wouldn’t want to put anyone else in danger even if they are ogres. I think it is only like a five year time gap between Forever After and The Last Wish so Farkle, Fergus and Felicia are still little kids.

I think that Puss' estrangement from Shrek and co. might have had something to do with his fourth death, with the exploding oven. Since Gingy was present, it's highly likely that Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and the others were too and possibly witnessed Puss die. It was traumatic for everyone involved, since they had no idea he would come back. But it was especially so for Puss, as it exposed the vulnerabilities he sought to hide behind that carefully cultivated image of bravado and devil may care. His friends became emblematic of his inevitable mortality and self-perceived moment of weakness, just like the Wolf and he felt like he had no choice but to flee.

I mean when you remember those when Kitty says that his beard looks disgusting on him, he's acting cocky saying it look dinstinguish on him to dignify it, despite not liking it either. When he wants get rid off it instead of asking Kitty for help, he tries play it off to let her do it herself, because he doesn't want admit. This is a deep analysis. Both Sherk and Puss are on similar journeys. As both of them had live solitary lives so much so that it’s hard for them to open up to others. But in the end, due to the experiences that the two had gone trough allowed them to open up. It would have been heartwarming for puss to turned to shrek because shrek had learned a similar lesson from shrek 4 to puss. Shrek would at least know to some extent what puss is going through. This is a great analysis. Great job.

I believe it was because Puss didn’t want to worry Shrek and Donkey, he wanted to prove that he is alright with fighting alone, similar to how Mr. Incredibles. Fighting together makes one stronger together. he didn’t want his friends hurt by a powerful foe. and that he can take on his problems by himself. So I can see where this was coming from. I also had an idea about Sora and Donald Goofy meeting Puss, keep in mind that Puss in boots is Dreamworks and kingdom hearts are Disney, I had an idea that Sora could fight Death, but it’s impossible. Overall, Death from Puss in Boots is an incredibly powerful being, and is able to match and even outmatch Sora in many ways. However, Sora has an edge in terms of magical ability, and his keyblade is an incredibly powerful weapon. It is difficult to say who would win in a fight between the two, as it would come down to the skill of the fighters and the strategies they use. I don’t think it’s possible because Death is impossible to beat, or destroy because of his immortality.

i think its pretty simple, Shrek and Donkey settled down with their families and Puss was still an adventurer, they maybe parted ways amicably and Puss was probably content with that being the last time they saw each other, also, the Shrekverse is set in the 17th-18th century, the only method of fast communication we’ve ever seen is Shrek’s magic mirror broadcasting the Far Far Away red carpet in the 2nd movie(oh and Rumples broadcast in the last movie), so its not like Puss could have just dialed them up instantly, we also don’t know where exactly Far Far Away and Shreks swamp is on the world, but we know that FFA is about an ocean’s distance away from Spain, and Shrek’s swamp is at least over 700 miles away from FFA, so that’s a incredibly large distance to travel and Puss would have certainly been killed by death if he attempted that journey while being hunted by him, he went to Mama Luna’s house because it was the closest place that he thought was safe,

I think it’s obviously has to do with Puss being this extreme daredevil here for the thrills and the dangers along with the fact he likes to do things all by his own. Granted in _Shrek 2, Shrek the Third,_ and _Shrek Forever After_ he has joined with Shrek and Donkey, but that’s due to his friendship with them and helping out Shrek. But when’s he’s not visiting Shrek, Donkey and his friends Puss usually travels and goes on some dangerous and risky adventure just for the thrills and to live by his reputation as a legend and at the same time, it’s Puss job to figure this problem by himself with the eventual help of Kitty Softpaws and Perrito.

While Puss is very much a friend to Shrek, he's not going to be emotionally vulnerable around him. I'm sure Shrek and his family would have helped Puss, but he's too prideful and wouldn't want anyone aware of the legend to see him in such a fragile state. Maybe after the wedding Puss decided to double down on his solo adventuring, as he tried to soothe the pain with parties, excitement and adoration from stangers.

I think the events in Santa Coloma were before Shrek 2. I think after seeing Shrek, Donkey and Fiona become parents, maybe Puss wanted to find Kitty so he could have his happily ever after, but also continue his life of adventure and as a legend. It’s likely why he left the swamp and returned to Spain. Guess he managed to find a way to cross oceans. I think it’s at least 5 or 6 years between Forever After and the Last Wish. I do agree that Puss isn’t one who likes others to see him look so venerable. It’s why I feel like him and Shrek have very similar character arcs cause they both live lonely lives and wrap their feelings in layers for a long time until they meet their first true friend. Donkey and Perrito. Boy I can only imagine the interaction between them. If Perrito has another swearing rampage that’ll be hilarious. Can do hear Donkey saying: “Man, who was his mama. And I thought I had a filthy mouth.”

this is a very thought-out theory, I have another theory just from a Irl experience, I've seen that the people who need the most help sometimes won't take it. Puss is dealing with a lot of self-reflection and its important for any man dealing with this to feel like they can get out of their own hole and make something for themselves. I think a good theme of the movie bases a lot of self-health and reflection in general, an idea that we are all dealing with our own battles every day. If it is never to be revealed as to why he didn't ask for help, I certainly wouldn't mind; bc the movies story gives a great message.

I just realized something scary. It is just a theory, but what if Farquaad planned to send fairytale creatures to Jack Horner so he would get rid of them? Think about, Farquaad wanted a 'perfect kingdom' without 'Fairytale freaks' and Jack Horner was collector of everything magical or powerful and they both hated fairytale beings, Horner was jealous of them having magic while he had none and Farquaad because of daddy issues with Grumpy (this is from Musical in case you wondering) and saw fairytale creatures nothing but filth that was ruining his perfect kingdom, calling them monsters. If you remember the interrogation scene Farquaad demanded from Gingy to know the location of where the others are hiding. He had no idea they were hiding in Shrek's swamp. And we all know how Jack Horner is cruel, he took unicorns their horns and use the the rest as mules to pull his chariot, caged many innocent living beings as some pets like liliputans, the cricket, the phoenix, let one his skilled employed turn herself into gold just because she made fun of his nursery rhyme, set up Kitty, probably because she was fairytale talking animal he hates, and let's not forget his murder counts on Bakers Dozen.

My thoughts on this matter: Puss went to FFA after Santa Coloma, as his guilt for abandoning Kitty and fear couldn’t mentally allow him to remain where he was living (I don’t know if he’s from Spain, he speaks Spanish but FFA isn’t a real place so it’s confusing for me at least) so he fled to a place where he likely wouldn’t be very well known. He’s a bounty hunter in Shrek 2, so it’s very likely he’s trying to make some money as people likely don’t know/love/respect him as the legend, so they wouldn’t be nearly as hospitable. Puss 1 and Santa Coloma take place before Shrek 2 in my headcanon. During the doctor’s appointment, Puss still has his ego intact (even if slightly cracked thanks to the prospect of being on his last life) so he still thought he could be the legend. Then after his first encounter with Death, he fled to Mama Luna’s because he didn’t want to bring Death (who he thought was a bounty hunter at the time) to FFA and possibly endanger Shrek and his family. It’d also explain why he didn’t go back to San Ricardo and the orphanage; he didn’t want to put any of them in danger, especially after the Golden Goose incident. As for Puss being back in “Spain” after Shrek 4, I believe he left because Shrek’s and Donkey’s families settled down and had no more adventures, so he went back to “Spain” to rekindle his legend. Not sure if he would have left on bad terms if I’m being honest.

Puss may have just felt bored since he didn’t have much adventure left with them so he could’ve just left on good terms. I assume Far Far Away is located somewhere in the U.K. since Shrek is Scottish and Fiona’s parents Harold and Lillian have English accents. I agree with you on everything else. I think it’s at least five years between Forever After and The Last Wish which could be another reason why he didn’t return. He feared going back after leaving for so many years and looking like as if he saw a ghost (Death in his case). Puss is like Shrek and likes to hide his vulnerable side from everyone. Both lived very lonely lives before meeting their closest friends.

Maybe Puss and Shrek were simply geographically very far away from each other, and since people could only get around by horse, foot or ship in the medieval age, it would have taken too long for Puss to travel to Shrek. Especially because he wanted to be the first to reach the wish star so he wouldn't have gotten there on time. Puss lives in medieval Spain, while Shreks swamp seems to be in central europe, judging by the landscapes. Far Far Away seems to be located on the mediterranean coast, probably France or Italy. They also cross mountains that look like the Alps on their way to Far Far Away, and we see a sign that says that Far Far Away is 900 miles away from Shreks swamp in the second movie. Also, I think he didn't want to endanger Shrek and his family, and since Death is a supernatural grim reaper I don't think Shrek could have done anything against him.

Puss’ character arc almost from the very beginning is like Shrek’s. Shrek lived a life in solitude because the works saw him as nothing but a big, stupid, ugly ogre. He wrapped himself in many layers and never let anyone see how he truly felt about life until he met Donkey who never judged Shrek. The same can apply to Puss. He lived a very lonely life and he didn’t truly let anyone see how he really felt about it. Even though I’m his case it’s more of denial of the legendary life being as wonderful as he thought it was. Once Puss met Perrito, he never saw him as a legend or an outlaw, but a friend. I think that’s why he felt he found a true friend who wouldn’t judge him for who he is. I can imagine if there’s a 5th Shrek, we can really see Shrek and Puss have an even stronger companionship cause both characters faced similar hardships. They went on many adventures together and found their happily ever after. It would be cool if Puss admitted that he looked up to Shrek and respected him a lot for being an ogre and never letting it back him down. I remember reading a fanfic of how Shrek saw Puss as a son and protected him like one.

I think shrek and donkey changed him enough to the point where he left on good terms. Ultimately, it was his mortality that set him straight, but I don’t think he would’ve been able to accept that in the long run if not for the humility shrek and donkey taught him, even if he lost a good chunk of it. I think that he left on good terms but couldn’t look himself straight in the eye after leaving his friends, I think that his guilt is what dragged him back into his adventurous lifestyle, and that him returning to far far away is symbolizing him reverting to the humbled gato he was when he was with shrek and donkey, if not changed a little for the better.

Then when Puss got cold feet, not only was he too ashamed to face Kitty again, but his best friends as well. He probably believed that they thought he was a coward and never wanted to see him again, so he left without saying goodbye. And if Kitty really had been at the altar (which I think she was), maybe Fiona had tried to comfort her. I can imagine Donkey saying, "Puss! How have you been? At first I thought the new remake of Shrek would be horrible, but after seeing the animation of Puss in Boots 2 I have a really good feeling about movie. And I hope it's not a remake from the start, but a continuation from the end of Puss in Boots.

It really depends if Shrek 5 would go with this animation style. In my opinion, I do like the look of the more cartoonish looking humans, but characters like Shrek, Donkey and Fiona’s designs are so iconic I’d leave them be. The redesign worked for Kitty cause she wasn’t quite at that stage of popularity in the Shrek universe. I think Kitty is possibly the 5th most popular Shrek character now.

@@Christopher_Woods nah after the Last Wish, Shrek 5 NEEDS to be in the same/similar animation style, it literally just looks so much better, hell Puss looks way better in that style than he does in any of the Shrek films, he’s much more fluid, colorful, and dynamic in the Last Wish than any other movie, And Shrek, Donkey and Fiona definitely need a slight redesign, they honestly would not look bad at all looking a little bit more cartoony, also the Last Wishes animation style works perfectly with the close-up battles, Puss’ battle with Death was anime-tier good, Shrek deserves to have battles animated that way too.

I feel like Puss would definitely go back to his Spanish-speaking region after a while and continue his adventures, because Shrek and Donkey are married men who settled into family life. Considering Puss’s desire to be a legendary hero, my guess is that he sensed that he was becoming too domesticated and decided to move out of Far Far Away after Shrek Forever After, possibly soon after the Ogre triplets’ birthday. I would think that Puss would find it preferable to lay low and humiliate himself in front of strangers who don’t recognize them as opposed to acting vulnerable again in front of his friends, considering he won Shrek’s trust before by begging to be spared while Shrek was still a stranger to him. Not to mention that nobody recognized Puss after burying his hat, cape and boots at Mama Luna’s. I think he couldn’t bring himself to face his close friends in such an embarrassing, vulnerable position.

  • @Moonblossom-bunny
    @Moonblossom-bunny Жыл бұрын

Absolutely agree with this video! I also think, as a personal opinion, that since Puss leans heavily into the hero archetype, he might have gotten scared getting too deep into a lifestyle that doesn't fit that or would be a huge change from that. Like if he were to marry Kitty. Or. Gets too comfortable hanging around Shrek and Donkey, who don't actively seek out adventures, so he is more likely to fall out of the legendary hero lifestyle he's used to. And as stated in this video, he will run away when that happens.

Interesting theory! For me I think that Puss didn't necessarily had to be estranged from Shrek and co for him not wanting to run to them for help. After Death's first encounter, his ego was so much bruised by his defeat that he litteraly held a funeral for himself. For him, he wasn't Puss in Boots anymore. He held his own legend at such a high standard that he couldn't bear to continue living as Puss in Boots after having been defeated. That's why he accepted the new name, new rules, all the humiliations at Mama Luna's. He was too proud to go to people that knew him before. After all, "pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source"

I don't think people understand the point of him being Death himself. Puss is supposed to fight death by himself as he's on his last life and death is after his last life. He shouldn't get any help from his friends or anyone. Death isn't just some villain they added for the sake of a hero vs villain story, he has a purpose that is not just being evil, but it's not just death, puss had too much pride to go and ask his friends for help. He wanted to be a true legend.

I have my own theory, and it might match yours, I'm not sure since I am writing it before watching: I think that seeing Shrek and Donkey in happy relationships, having kids and moving on with their lives, made him think about what he could have if he wasn't a coward in Santa Coloma, and decided to ditch his wife to continue being a legend, and probably made him think about Kitty whey too often then he would like, so I thnk he didn't want to came back to that, and I think this is also why he eventually left Far Far Away and came back to Spain, and why when he had Kitty back and also Perrito to complete their little family he THEN decided to come back because now he finally had what his friends had all along. I don't know, this is just my headcanon.

  • @artechstorm

I think you have a very good point. I want to add something else. Maybe Poots doesn't want to have Shrek and Donkey help him because they were facing death itself. It would be fine if he dies because he did become a legend to some people, but he can't forgive himself if he somehow let Donkey and/or Shrek die trying to save them. Their families would have a hard time getting over that every time Poots would show up.
