Shreddage 3 Masterclass Episode 1: The Basics

Музыка

Episode 1 of our SHREDDAGE 3 masterclass series on using, performing, and writing for virtual guitars. This tutorial video in our Novice Unit starts with the very basics of how to play the instrument, change articulations, and explore snapshots. Future episodes will cover not just features of SHREDDAGE 3, but also important concepts of guitar playing that you can apply to your mockups!

First of all I want to say that shreddage is a fantastic product. I love the midi templates provided to help users get started. I would like to see you guys expand on this concept and offer midi packs like Toontrack does for ezkeys. That way users can easily get a sound or pattern they are looking for and choose the key they want to play it in. And then they could drag the midi into their DAW to tweak the midi further if they wanted. Please do this! It would take your product to a whole new level.

For everyone else confused as to why the Kontakt keyboard doesn't show, it's because it's toggled off in your Kontakt settings. On the top bar, click the menu button just to the right of the settings icon and enable the keyboard. Just picked up Rogue and Abyss and was pretty happy how they sounded out of the box, but seeing the potential in the programming has me really excited!

Did something change in the product since these videos? When I bring in provided MIDI data (loading the preset and updating parameters per the file name), mine behaves quite differently. It seems that the MIDI data in some cases is 1) not calling the same keyswitches as seen in your examples, and 2) note lengths and start times also appear different, resulting in different behavior. For example, one of your examples calls the Mute and Sustain KS, but bringing in your MIDI results in a Power Chord KS getting called. So far, this is the case for a few tests on videos 1 and 3. In some cases, I can reverse engineer what I see in the video, but sometimes it's pretty confusing why something isn't working right. I'm fine "programming" a VI instead of playing in, but this one has been a bit difficult.

You can see what is what when you hover your mouse over the red keys in the Kontakt keyboard (as long as you have the Shreddage instrument selected in Kontakt rack, which you can do by clicking the rack wherever there is no pop-down menu in it. The leftmost C is "C0").

Am I missing a setting somewhere? I'm using Jupiter and the velocities don't seem to be working. I've tried in 3 different DAWs, but when I set a range of velocities, every note is still played at the same volume, whether the velocity of the note is at 1 or 100. I think it works with the default -INIT S3 Jupiter- setup, but with any other guitar option, it doesn't. I experimented with the same thing with the Abyss basses and it seems like velocity works there regardless of preset.

Hello! I have 2 questions. 1) I have Shreddage 3 Serpent and muted notes sound bad. You should use sustain vs. mutes for an E string...and power chord sustain vs. power chord mutes for a 0-2-2 power chord right?...but what do you use for a 0-2 chord? Open E string, 2nd fret of the A string? 2) With just 1 midi track (1 guitar), you can use double tracking for a good sound. What should I use for parts where two guitars play a different riff? Example: two guitars play the same riff from bar 1 to bar 8...so I can just use 1 midi with double tracking...but what if guitar 1 plays the rhythm part and guitar 2 plays a solo from bar 9 to 16?

    1. Try loading the preset "Metal Rhythm" under the "Styles" folder. That might help. For the voicing question I'm not sure I understand, can you rephrase? 2. I would use two different NKIs and two different MIDI channels with two different mixer tracks, much like a real double track. Try setting the 2nd guitar to "Guitar 4" which will give you the most variation from the first one.

@@ImpactSoundworksLLC Thanks! I found out that your power chords consist of two notes only, 0-2 and not 0-2-2 (fretboard). In a video you explain that both solutions will work, using an E power chord OR playing E and H manually at the same time...but the power chord will sound better. PS Where is this "Metal rhythm" preset? Do you mean a sound preset? I use the dry DI tone of Shreddage 3, then add an external cab simulation (EZ Mix).

@Ahein In this case the note isn't held down, it's just that the MIDI being used is so fast, you don't see the key coming up :-) By "sequenced MIDI note" we just mean, notes that you write in your DAW's piano roll. It's usually easier to write them in (instead of playing them in) for really fast parts.

1.First of all, use a MIDI Out to control Kontakt (set the output port of MIDI Out, "Port", on the right top, to same as Kontakt Input port, set the channel of the MIDI Out as the same that you're using for the loaded Shreddage instrument, by default channel 1 is for the first instrument you've loaded to Kontakt, 2 is second etc) *2. In MIDI Out, switch "send pan, volume and pitch" (bottom middle left) on (it's off by default)* 3. In MIDI Out, set the pitch knob range to 12 semitones to make your life easier (I think you get 100 % of whatever range you set there when it's set to 12 semitones; at least in Orangetree products it works this way. In any case, the default 2 semitones is not enough to get whatever it is you're trying to have as the max range) *4. Automate the MIDI Out's channel pitch* 5. Set the pitch bend range to whatever you want in Shreddage's MAIN-page

I own this product and want to like it. Unfortunately I hate it. It's far too complex to use effectively. Many of the articulations do not work as advertised as well. Keen observers on KZread probably have already noticed that the developer doesn't show you any actual controller playing or midi track construction from the start. They only show you the finished product after who knows how much editing. There are almost no videos anywhere on how to build realistic guitar tracks with this software. That should be a red flag to anyone considering purchase. The samples are quite stunning and beautiful so it's a shame I'll never use this.

Hey Mike, we're sorry you're having difficulty with Shreddage 3. We can guarantee everything works as advertised and as we show in our videos, project files, and MIDI examples - we provide that so you can reproduce our examples for yourself, 1:1. If you're having specific issues please let our support know. While you're right that we don't have any videos showing creating a track *from scratch* (we're working on these now!) we do have videos clearly showing MIDI + controller playback. See below for two examples. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqqFl5iChdiecso.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/gmacm6OmfJWomKw.html

I can program midi, but I am struggling to create even basic guitar tracks that sound realistic. Again since there are no actual tutorials available from scratch, I am basically on my own. The written documentation that comes with the product has no midi diagrams or specific instructions on creating realistic guitar sounds. I'm sure much of it is user error, but without any instructions, how would any of us know

it takes WAYY WAAYY TOO MUCH FUCKING AROUND just to get this into a useable shape. i am used to the old shreddage 2 legacy setup so this keyswitch trash makes no sense to me. (no i dont care) i literally have to go in and program all of the velocities for every articulation i want to use and thats some bullshit right there it should just fucking work like shreddage 2 legacey does, and you hit a switch if you want to use keyswitch. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND LIKE IT IS. *i feel like i wasted money on my shreddage 3 legacy* but it sounds so much better than the sheddage 2 with all the string rattle and what not so i dont want to give up on it yet. *I JUST WISH IT WASNT SO GODDAMN RETARDED TO JUST GET A SIMPLE SUSTAIN/PALM MUTE SETUP GOING.* *ALSO NOT EVERYONE HAS A KEYBOARD WITH A MOD WHEEL SO YOU GOTTA MAKE ANOTHER WAY TO GET VIBRATO, WTF...*

  • @adhoccerswings

    @adhoccerswings

Literally, the only effort needed is to choose a nice preset to get it into "usable shape", as long as you have a midi-controller (and even if not, then you just "program" it manually). You have sustains and palm mutes there by default; palm mute is low velocities, sustains higher, rakes even higher, pinch 127/127 (max velocity). You don't have to program velocities, you can just choose whatever keyswitch you want for one single articulation, and use that without caring about how quiet or hard you hit the keys. You already have sustain and palm mute by default when you open it up. The articulation mapping is the same for all presets so take a nice preset (like Jupiter Metal lead, Jupiter Modern metal, Jupiter Wide Metal Lead) and play lower velocities to get palm mutes. You can remap the articulations however you like. The manual is good but you also need to search for a kontakt help tutorial video if you don't know how Kontakt works. Palm mute is lower velocities, sustain is mid, raking is 120-126, and pinch harmonics is 127/127 (velocity). You don't need a midi-controller with a mod wheel to be able to use the mod wheel. It's midi cc1, you can automate it, or control it with any other controller if you have any keyboard at all (just map it to whatever you want; "browse parameters" -> scroll way down for "midi cc1 mod wheel" -> "link to controller" in FL).

@@ImpactSoundworksLLC At least for a beginner like myself, there should be instruction by example where different guitar parts are built from scratch starting from a blank midi section in a DAW. This video series just plays a bunch of sounds as a demonstration without explaining at a granular level what is happening, without any exercises. A good example is the poly input explanation here, I sure can't hear any difference when you turn the knob up or down. A granular precise ground up explanation by example is what is needed for a complex plugin like this.
