Show Don't Tell Bass Cover HD

Not much to say today.
Show Don’t Tell by Rush off of their album, Presto, which came out in 1989.
I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I understand there is some bonus material from the Presto Tour on the "Time Stand Still" DVD.

Your Rush covers are essentially listening to the album with bass more upfront in the mix, they’re that good.

That's a nice thought, but it's only a bass and I like the voices of my far less expensive instruments just as much. It is very nice to be able to get so close to Geddy's sound as he sounded on the tracks he used the Wal on. In terms of Geddy, the Wal is probably the one instrument he used where the sound was as much from the bass as it was from his hands, if you know what I'm saying.

I was trying to think of a word to describe your work here Troy and couldn't think of one whilst I was viewing, so I guess "mesmerising" fits the bill fairly accurately. If Wal were ever in need of a promo to sell their basses, they need look no further than this. It's exactly how I would want my Wal to sound. Well done Troy and thanks for taking the time once again.

What amazing tone out of the Wal! I never knew a thing about them before watching you after being a rush fan for years. Your YYZ lesson has been inspirational and I watched it day after day until I felt comfortable (still working for 140bpm). I do beg you TJH to put more metronome performances for the very technical songs. Was really hoping for a slowed down La Vida Strangiato. More than all I hope you are playing with musicians as talented as you, because you are truly great at your craft. Cheers from IL.

One of my all-time Rush favourites. And you nailed it - as always. Hats off. And that Wal... man, this is my no. 1 dream bass. This thing sounds like a giant coil spring that's come alive. I played my pal's Mk 3 once and it was hands down the best sounding fretted bass I've ever held in my hands. Many years ago I used to dream of an Alembic, I finally got one, it's been with me for over a decade now... but for the last several years I can't stop dreaming of a Wal bass. Actually, a pair (a fretted and a fretless one - I'm a massive Mick Karn fan), and even one would be more expensive than all of my basses combined (yes, including the Alembic - it's their mid-range Essence model) and two would cost more than all of my basses and my 3 old Volvos combined ;-) So... maybe one day. Maybe.

That's great to hear, I'm glad you liked it. It was my #1 dream bass as well and I definitely enjoyed it for the time that I had it, but I found it to be a bit of a, for lack of a better term, one trick pony. Your "giant coil spring..." analogy is perfect and it does that sound like nothing else, but I found that it was, for me, limited to that specialized voicing. When you plugged it in you automatically sound like Geddy Lee on the Power Windows album. I'm sure you could get it to sound, pretty much, however you wanted it to, but I think how it sounds in this video is pretty close to the truest essence of the sound of this bass. While it's great for this stuff, I thought it sounded a bit too over the top on other material. When I had it I would find myself stepping over it to pick up much less expensive instruments that I enjoyed playing more. That's the main reason I got rid of it.

This is THE sound. One of my favourite songs (at least by Rush) played on one of my favourite basses (one that I have yet to get - yeah, rrright, dream on) by one of my favourite bassists (and I mean both the original version and this cover ;-)). SO. MUCH. AWESOME.

TJH3113 Rush means so much to me. When I turned 5, I got Moving Pictures on 33. My dad and I bonded over our love of music and it does make me smile that you play the songs correctly. I don't have to tell you how technical the songs are, and the odd meter is my "something shiny" . Again, thank you and I will continue to watch. Blessings. P.S. how did you come across the mask behind you? That is so interesting!!

TJH3113 have you ever thought of making a playlist that starts with what you would consider entry-level rush tunes and working toward more difficult ones in the playlist? I suppose that would have a different relevance depending on the players style or skill but nonetheless I think it would be helpful for some of us to know where to start if we wanted to take on Rush tunes. Saw your video today on how you do your video recordings. Enjoyed that very much! Thanks for posting that. It's amazing how beautiful something and sound and how simple the set up can be. I'm a firm believer in less effects and more technique.
