    The story goes that there wasn't a traditional 80's action movie sex scene in Commando, because Arnold Schwarzenegger argued that getting it on, while he has to save his child from dying in less than 24 hours would be an insanely bad look for his character. David Cage went and proved he was absolutely right.

    The best part about this game is that it presents to you a core mechanic of knowing what your character thinks. Only to then have it's main twist hinge upon betraying that said concept for unexplained reasons. It's like David Cage heard the term "unreliable narrator" but didn't actually know what it was or how to execute it good. Pretty much how when he was asked about Ethan Mars' unexplained blackouts, where instead of admitting that it was a cut storyline because Ethan and the killer was supposed to be psychically linked, he just said it was a Mcguffin and didn't understand what a Mcguffin is supposed to be.

  • @GabrielTorres-fl2xo

    @GabrielTorres-fl2xo

    EXACTLY! The twist is broken because they have this thought mechanic and David Cage just straight out altered events of the story without any sign at all, it's good for the shock value but once you start thinking about it, then you seen the problems

    He also has some vague idea about how to use video games as a medium, but half way through he got confused and mess things up. Case in point, quick time events. QTE was used to make "cool" cutscenes less tedious and boring for the audience. Cage grabbed that idea and adopt it to a narrative, mood setting tool. Making characters do QTE for mundane task in helps the audience getting through the "boring parts" of movies where the mood is set is probably what he was thinking. Imagine in Blade Runner when Deckard was looking through the tape, there's QTE to zoom in, observe, collect etc... This sounds, good on paper, but as we know in gameplay it looks ridiculous because Cage also thinks that failing QTE should not end the game and QTE itself is gameplay, or even engaging. The failing QTE not ending the game is a good idea, but it missed the point of QTE as a tool, which is why it seems boring. The ideal usage that he had, was to use QTE failing and completing to replace "dialogue choice" of the usual narrative games, is not bad at all, but he puts QTE everywhere which ruins the experience. QTE ended up not setting the mood but ruin it or turns it upside down to comedy more like. Mundane tasks should have just been done with one button, or as he did occasionally, completely optional as "side quests" to know more about the background, or let the player stumble into secrets that they otherwise might not discover that changes the course of the game. Related to this, as I have mentioned is the idea of choices. QTE replacing choices are good, or as I've mentioned above, small interactions that might have consequences down the line without it being an obvious "choice". In Detroit, Cage found a fun way narrative device about decisions by putting up the android breaking the "choices", represented as their "programming". Had he went further by no longer giving us options on the menu and the android simply make decisions with us merely controlling what and how they interact with the environment, it would have seemed a bit clever. Of course, all it did in term of gameplay is fuckall. Cage has good ideas, but his executions are abysmal. I wouldn't even go into his writing such as Fahrenheit being a pile of shit because of asspull, Heavy Rain mystery breaking down at the end, Detroit's asinine comparison between androids and civil right, comically missing the point of the entire movement. His games are sad because he has such huge support, budget and sales, yet all of his projects have huge unfulfilled potential, almost as if Cage is a director wanna be but he couldn't so he had to resort to video games without thoroughly examine or enjoying the medium. It's as Clancy Brown said. If someone competent takes over directive control from Cage and he serves as producer, it could be great.

    My favorite part of Heavy Rain is that the European dev team's knowledge of life in America was clearly limited to movies and tv shows. The police chief fires the FBI officer, room 102 is on the second floor, and EVERYONE has a gun, just to name a few choice examples. 😆

    @@krank23 like the story is an interesting concept. Serial killer kidnaps kid, and the father has to go on a jigsaw like scavenger hunt to rescue him. Like Shelby said when it first came out I was blown back by how this game told the story though it was less of a game and more of a choose your own adventure, and I do have a soft spot for these games. Looking back though, yeah David Cage has to have something against women because in this game the female character is put in so many situations where she is brutally assaulted sexually and otherwise. Whether it’s her “being sexy” to get info from the club owner who the tried to R*pe her or a mad man who thinks violating her with a drill is a good idea. Like, just wow. I mean the child targeting serial killer was more likable than 90% of the people she interacted with.

    @@DMindGaming that catches a lot of people, but Kramer actually leaves the flowers *after* Scott wonders this out loud to himself. Not because of anything relating to the origami killer plot.

  • @DMindGaming

    @@GreyRush Maybe Kramer regularly leaves flowers on the grave and those were the flowers that he left the last time he visited. Or maybe Shelby was just being sarcastic in his head cause they're trying to find the one who left the flowers cause they (Lauren) believes that it's the Origami Killer but Shelby obviously already knows this so he's like "oh gee I wonder who left those flowers there?". He does also make other snide thoughts like "This girl just doesn't know when to give up" when Lauren was following his trail while Shelby was trying to follow the copycat killer's trail so it's not out of the picture (cause usually Shelby's inner thoughts doesn't contradict that he knows he's the killer).

    I want everyone to take a moment and ponder just why 12 years after it first hit the stores, people continue to dissect the plot and seem to remember absolutely every tiny detail from it. No matter what you think of it in terms of art quality, this is without a doubt an _extremely_ memorable game. And there is something strangely attractive about it, you just can't stop thinking about it. Even Honest Trailers admitted that.

I think it was the first game I had ever played that tried alot of things within stories and gameplay that hadn't been seen before. True ALOT of those things were rudimentary at best and have been vastly improved in later games in other genres. Like Shelby said if you played it back in the late 00s, you probably have really fond memories of it but if you played it objectively today those probably wouldn't hold up well lol. Kind of like 90s sitcoms and sketch shows

    Here's the nicest thing I can say about David Cage and his games: I appreciate the attempts. I appreciate the idea of making these types of games - not all games need to be made the same; there should be room for movie-like interactive experiences focused on drama and story. I just wish his games were… good. And also, that he wasn't a terrible creep. (That said, I enjoyed most of Fahrenheit back in the day. Not sure it holds up, but I remember it as enjoyable up until the last, extremely rushed part)

    I'm in the same boat. With each new game I think, "Maybe, maybe this time David Cage will finally actualize the vision he's been chasing and make a good game version of that." There are parts of all of the games that I like; Omikron's body-stealing, Farenheit's you-are-the-murderer-and-the-investigator approach where you can change how things play out, Heavy Rain's focus on how much Ethan's mundane life falls apart, everything with Connor in Detroit, the idea of a co-op experience in Two Souls. It's just that none of those great conceits have quite carried over to being great games. Maybe one day. Maybe the next Quantic Dreams game will.

No, I'm 100% done because of the "creep" part. From what came out around Two Souls and his creepiness around Elliot Page, his bragging etc… not to mention the stuff that's come out about working conditions at Quantic, homophobia etc… Nah, I'm out.
