00:00 Hawaiian Shirt Introduction
These shirts have been around for close to a century now, yet can be a fiercely debated topic among enthusiasts as to whether they’re “stylish” or not. We’ll be discussing the history of the Hawaiian shirt, how it’s worn in a modern context, and if you can leverage classic style principles to include one (or more) in your wardrobe.
01:08 What is a Hawaiian Shirt?
On the Hawaiian Islands and elsewhere, you’ll sometimes hear them referred to as “Aloha Shirts”. The shirt is collared, usually with a camp style, and with a fully buttoned front though some variations might opt for a popover style instead. These shirts are almost always short-sleeved to mirror their casual, warm weather.
03:23 History of Hawaiian Shirts
Hawaiian shirts do actually originate from Hawaii. This style of shirt, alongside the checked style known as the palaka that originated on Hawaiian plantations, became popular in Hawaii as a trend.
07:50 Why You Should Wear a Hawaiian Shirt
• A classic option for the right personality
• Served as staples for many style icons and other notable figures
• Allow us to be extremely expressive with our color choices and patterns
• Much more “friendly” and “fun” when compared to other “stuffy” classic menswear options
• Especially nice for those who live in tropical or hot climates
• Signature style piece when done tastefully
• Having one will have you covered for Hawaiian-themed parties
10:02 Why You Should Not Wear a Hawaiian Shirt
• Hawaiian shirts are very situational
• They tend to be loud and extremely memorable
• Other casual shirts can serve just as well as a Hawaiian shirt
• Wearing a Hawaiian shirt outside of a resort setting will also carry some potential stigmas
• Some also might just consider the shirt “ugly”
• Quality Hawaiian shirts are more difficult to find
• They, unfortunately, carry some political baggage
13:55 How to Integrate a Hawaiian Shirt into a Classically Styled Wardrobe: 1. Observe the Occasion
2. Focus on Fit
3. Mind the Materials
4. Evaluate Your Ensemble
5. Balance Relaxation and Refinement
6. Remember Respect
18:20 Conclusion
Hawaiian shirts occupy a truly unique place within the world of classic menswear. There are certainly alternatives available (like polos and sport shirts) for those who don’t wish to own one, but they can be a fun inclusion into your wardrobe if they appeal to you.

I work in IT, and my "uniform" at the office includes a Hawaiian shirt over neutral cargo pants and work boots, with a Fedora for going outdoors. I live in Florida where there are fewer than a score of days per year that require long sleeves. Compared to colleagues in polo shirts, I am likely to be picked out by new people as the manager in a given room, just because I'm wearing a button down shirt with a collar. I gave away my short sleeve solids, stripes, and plaids so I'm down to 90% Hawaiian shirts, with a few dress shirts and long sleeves for our few weeks of "winter".
Spent much time in Hawai'i back in the late 80's. Bought more than a few suitcases full of really nice designs, and I still fit into most of them. I worked in the IT department of a large bank (in conservative New England), and wore a Hawaiian shirt every day. Eventually Corporate banned me from walking through the lobby and main offices during the day and banished me to the Ops center. Loved it! Glad the shirts are seeing some more respect these days.

I pretty much wear a Hawaiian type shirt daily. I live at the beach, and live a rather Bond/Magnum sartorial lifestyle. Some really nice Sperry's, nice chinos, and a high end (Paradise Found) shirt with a nice Panama and I am good to go. When not wearing a Hawaiian, then a nice linen button down or a classic polo. Obviously, when wearing more formal attire the Hawaiian stays in the closet. What is funny is I have been wearing them for years. They seem to be coming back in style though. You're talking to a guy who wears Bass penny loafers too though!

As a certified Florida man; a good linen spread collar shirt with flowers, pineapples, or stripes is akin to Superman and his cape. But you guys nailed it, the biggest difference between looking like a tourist and looking beach ready is in the fit, color, and how the shirt is worn.

I too, was confuse by that statement. Anyone even a far left can hear Hawaiian shirt. I felt like this OP went over his head with the whole Cultural Appropriation subject. I just don't see how it can be Cultural Appropriation if the propose of making these shirt was meant for consumers or tourist who travel to Hawaii at the time. I'm Cuban, live in Florida we have a lot of Hawaiian shirt from here, I am not hawaiian and still wear they're shirt, and most likely because it is very very comfortable to wear them especially in the heat. It beats better than wearing a hoodie, sunglass, and a mask with heavy duty pants and a bookbag god knows what under 98 degree weather. It just seem more logical to wear Hawaiian shirts.
My experience may be very different, but while working in a rather laid-back warehouse I've actually gotten a compliment on one of my Hawaiian shirts. I usually get mine from thrift stores and pick ones with much more subtle colors, such as my ivory + dull green Tabasco shirt.

The warehouse I work at does Hawaiian shirt Fridays, so I have several. I go with either black or blue base colors and then floral or sunset/beach patterns (I have a really nice synthwave sunset one that's just amazing). Nothing overly garish (I dress in a lot of 80's style, so that's often my thing), and I usually avoid the bright neon colors. I like 'em, and I too get compliments oh them often. It's a nice change from the usual solid black and dark blue t-shirts I wear to work daily.
Yes! I have around 20 Hawai'i-made aloha shirts. For me they are part of my 1950s style.
I've been wearing Hawaiian shirts since 1986. I'm 55 and have 8 Hawaiian shirts now. I wear them mostly on vacation, cookout, and just hanging out at home on weekends during the summer.

I have a collection of around 100 vintage to modern Hawaiian shirts from the 50's to modern, I would say get then from Hawaii or maybe Japan, RJC, Sun surf, Paradise found etc, also personally I think Rayon is one of the best fabrics for the shirts, not only is it very traditional but it seems to just fit better and flow better when you are wearing it.

I've never been a fan of the Hawaian shirt. If I were to wear one I would suggest a single colour against a single muted background. However, I do possess a couple of seersucker shirts with tiny floral pattern. I find them cooling to wear in warm weather and much more attractive to the eye.

I have a decent percentage of Hawaiian shirts which are tones of the same color, and they make good choices for days when I am blending in rather than being a peacock.
Live in Northeastern Oklahoma during the summer. When it is 95 degrees with the 65% humidity, they rock.
If you want a Hawaiian shirt and maximize versatility they make them in solid colors, personally my favorites are a burgundy Ralph Lauren with light green and off-white flowers, the other is a solid light blue. Both of these look great with chinos or dark wash denim, paired with boat shoes/chukka boots and they look good. Both are a heavy cotton/linen blend.
Hawaiian shirts work in the right settings. I used to wear one in the summer months out to the bars. But I find it's a shirt that you'll rarely if ever get a compliment on, nor will you ever really give another person a compliment on theirs. It's just a loose fitting, loud-ish shirt, that works in a fun way in some environments, and no more.

I grew in South Florida during the 50s and 60s where I would lived most of my life. In the 1980s and 90s they were a regular part of my casual attire. At one point the girl I was living with bought us matching Hawaiian shirts, which I thought was too cute by two.
My family lived in Honolulu when I was a kid. My older brother amassed a significant collection of Aloha shirts, which later came down to me. I wear them (and newer ones I purchased for myself) nowadays as soon as the weather is warm enough, either buttoned up, or open, with a complimentary tee-shirt visible underneath (and a Panama hat). I’ve been wearing Reyn Spooner Hawaiian 🌺 Shirts since the 70’s 🤙
I have half a dozen Hawaiian shirts in my wardrobe in various prints and fabrics. That and shorts are the staple casual look for older gentlemen here in Central Florida where the summer temperatures are regularly in the mid-to-upper 90s.
Good overall video. I think one thing you should have expanded on is original, "vintage" brand names. I find many great Original Aloha Shirts from the '60s and '70s at thrift stores and even places like The Salvation Army for $8 to $14. Thay are often in nearly new condition as they are not an everyday wear item. In fact I have the Exact same shirt that you are wearing in this video. Aloha🌺
I have half a dozen of them. I’ll only wear them on hot, sunny days. All are traditional floral styles but my favourite has retro style cocktails on it.
Between my polo’s and these as summertime staples. Often with blazers in evening. Paired with mocs, loafers, even cowboy boots - usually exotic texture leather. Jeans, slacks, shorts. Laid back, care-free, fun/easy and comfortable in the heat and sun. I also live in Reno, and anything more formal than yoga pants and PJ’s are well-dressed. Jeans and a T-shirt gets comments like “why dressed up?” Save the suits for funerals, job interviews and christenings I say. If my shirt triggers you; it’s not the shirt that troubles you. If it angers the fashion Gods; so be it. I’ll know even if for a moment I’ve gotten their attention and wink back with delight and aloha.
Love Hawaiian shirts. I got two high-quality one while in vacation in Hawaii, and then got another vintage one used on eBay (both Made in Hawaii). As a northern Italian now living in San Diego, California, I've come to embrace the beach lifestyle and I wear them regularly. I see that my Italian friends don't like them, but I can see that they just don't "get it," that's all.

They’re known for the reverse print.
I've never owned an actual Hawaiian shirt, but a long time ago, I had something in a neutral, natural color, with a sort of silk-screen print of plants on it, and it had wooden buttons. If I had to ascribe characteristics to it, I'd say it was a "Japanese" shirt. It was beautiful and not gawdy and I wish I still had something like it.
I got two authentic Hawaiian shirts from my brother two years ago when he was on his honeymoon. I love them, but barely wear them because I don’t want to ruin them.😅
There is a time and place
Lots of people in San Diego including Navy personnel wear Hawaiian shirts. I work for the Navy in Monterey Ca and many current and retired personnel wear one even where the temp can be in the 60s.
Rodd & Gunn has nice Hawaiian style shirts that are Hawaii office appropriate (not the tourist style Hawaiian shirt à la Nick Nolte booking photo). They can be found at Nordstrom (fewer & more subdued colors, smaller patterns). I wear their linen ones on island (even under a linen or giro inglese sport weave coat…). The ones you showed are more like tourist style ones.
I literally wore one yesterday on my day off.😂
I live on Longboat Key, offshore form Sarasota, Florida. All I wear every day are 'Hawaiian' shirts, unless I'm dressing up. I am retired so there's no office to be concerned about. I rarely wear long pants with them but if I do, it's usually white linen. If I wear a solid shirt, I'll wear a small patterned short. If a patterned or embroidered shirt, then solid shorts. I also wear only casual slip-on shoes with no socks & no undershirt. I also have a large collection of 'Longboat Key' ball caps to coordinate with my outfits. Nearly all of my shirts are from Tommy Bahama or Cubra Vera, mostly silk. I always feel totally sharp dressed this way.
A Gentleman's Reminder: REMEMBER the BUTTONS! Classic "wooden" buttons denote authenticity and respect for tradition. ALOHA!
Hawaiian shirt is a necessity in the summer, love them!
I have: one polyester hawaian Shirt with pink blue florals (deliciously horrible) One polyester long sleeves hawaian Shirt with leaves and butterflies One long sleeves cotton shirt with cranes and roses One itian silk shirt with florals All of them work well with the Fight Club Jacket. Don't forget gold jewlery for a more pimpish look. I wear this mostly to spite people.

Lived and worked in Hawaii for nine years. Wore Hawaiian shirts at work almost every day. The fabric, print, and shirt maker makes all the difference. I am partial to Tori Richard cotton lawn fabric, more muted prints. I had some silk shirts too but they were too delicate. Reyn Spooner was also popular when I lived there, but I found the fabric too scratchy. Whatever you do, don’t buy the $9.99 ABC store special.
YES, and Thomas Magnum agrees!
I love them wearing. Specially on vacation and beach party. It's confy and relax. Easy to wash and fast dry.
I friggn' LOVE Aloha shirts! I only wear them on weekends with shorts during the summer months or when I'm in Hawaii, but I wear them every chance I get. The majority of my Aloha shirts are from Gitman Vintage and I try to stick with more tasteful prints. I find them to be less baggy than the typical Aloha shirts and they fit me pretty well.
We retired to Costa Rica a number of years ago, and as you might expect I acquired a number of what I refer to as "tropical" shirts. We have just returned to the States, and I brought all of them with me. I love them. In fact, I bought one earlier this year that has garnered more favorable comments than any other piece of clothing I have ever worn!
Would enjoy hearing your thoughts on other classic casual shirts like camp shirts, shirt-jacs, casual knit shirts etc.
I have a couple of nice ones from Hawaii in linen. I like them and they definitely have their place. Note that the "alt right" lifted this idea from the regular-right or libertarian-leaning concealed carry community, which had long ago discovered that Hawaiian shirts are excellent casual cover garments. BTW, have you ever done a video on the style challenges of carrying a concealed firearm?
As an avid Hawaiian shirt wearer, I approve this message!!
Yes.

Loving the facial hair, looks great and really fits your facial structure :)
I definitely like my Hawaiian shirts to fit bigger than my other button up collared shirts 👕
I had a Hawaiian Shirt when I was a child in the 90s. My father bought it for me when we were on vacation in California. I remember we went to a shop that sold Hawaiian goods at Disneyland and we both got one that day and wore them in the park. I wore the heck out of that shirt until I outgrew it. I remember really well that it was a sky blue color with palm trees and red macaws. There was some floral on it as well, don't remember what else was on it, but it really did make me stand out when I wore it to school all the time. All my classmates wanted one.
A man in a Hawaiian shirt is comfortable with himself and doesn't give 5 f's what anyone thinks..we rock that
I like Tanoa Aloha shirts. More of a geometric Polynesian style. They’re in the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu.
an unbuttoned bright red hawaiian shirt with a tank top is amazing
I bought a dachund print in a mid century style. It is the penultimate summer garden party shirt!
I wear Hawaiian shirts continuously during Summer months here in the deep South. Through Labor Day that's my look. I'm careful not to wear anything to brash or loud however. A Panama hat is always on my head as well. I wear loafers never sandals that's not a flattering look in my opinion. For slacks, white, light blue, tan, are the usual colors. I do occasionally wear a sport coat with a Hawaiian shirt which is fine look for evening wear. My only other Summer look if not an Hawaiian shirt outfit is a light blue Seer Sucker Suite. Which also looks smashingly good!
Another reason for the increasing popularity of Hawaiian shirts on the mainland after WW 2 was the large number of servicemen who passed through the islands (or were stationed there) during that time. Many brought some back with them when they returned home.
