Should You Upgrade? Spitfire Audio's FREE BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover to CORE v1.1.9

Музыка

Over the last couple of weeks, one of the most common questions I have received is: Should I Upgrade from Spitfire Audio's FREE BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover to the BBC SO CORE?
Like so many questions I get there isn't a simple answer. It all depends on what level you're working at, what you are creating, and what your needs are as a music maker.
In this video I try to break down the differences between the FREE (or $49) BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover and BBC Symphony Orchestra CORE sharing instrument differences between with 2 mock-ups using the libraries and final thoughts on who will benefit from the upgrade as well as who I think will just not need to upgrade.

    As a poor college student and aspiring film composer Discover is an absolute God send. It allows me to make perfectly passable and nice sounding scores for nothing. One day when I have a couple hundred bucks to burn I'll upgrade, but until then there is no need to upgrade. Spitfire has gained my lifelong support. Loved the video.

    Hey man if you create an account at orchestral Tools and download the sine player you can buy individual instruments from the inspire collection super cheap and great sound from the Teledex stage. They also have the Layers free to download. Most of my stuff I started with were from free instruments from Spitfire's labs. RedRoom Audio's free Palette orchestra and Garageband's free instrument series. I would also check out wave runner audio and Insanity Audio They have a great Cello,Violin, Tuba and Trumpet instruments. Excellent quality for ridiculously low price. Play on Player!!!

    This is exactly what I needed. I produce electronic music, (trance is typically what I focus on), and I've been wanting to incorporate more orchestral sounds and aspects since I started but until now I'd only found string and brass samples that gave texture so I'd been adding pad layers to really fill the space and extend them. Right now I'm going to stick with Discover to see what I can accomplish and really add to old and new tracks, but I can definitely hear the difference in the brass and string options and how much more I could really add using the legato, marcato, and collegno options. Even though I don't necessarily plan to write film scores or other real symphonic pieces right now, the reason I hope to upgrade to core at some point would be for the section leaders. I'd love to use them as leads in songs without feeling so spread out.Discover's sounds sort of feel like they should be behind something else or all working together, not as much individually. I've got plenty of time to make decisions and decide where I really want to continue to go with my sound with this new addition to my vst library but thank you for giving me better examples and ideas of what I can potentially do if/when I upgrade!

I think i will keep going with the discovery version until i've mastered it. I'm super grateful for Discover and it can enable remarkable moments. However, besides missing dynamic layers, the sampling is also very sparse. Strings show that rather dramatically as it looks like each sampled note has to cover at least 6 half notes, I think. It miraculously doesn't destroy the impression, but that's been about as tight to the threshold as possible, before formants break down entirely. Still, an unbelievable gift and super clever of Spitfire Audio!

    Great review. I upgraded to Core from Discover when they last had a sale and got it for a really good price. What I think is more dubious is going from Core to Pro unless you are already a good sound engineer and know mic placements etc. Question is what do you need that Core doesnt give? Choir, some other instruments like Mandolin in Labs, I would like to see a Core with MPE to do more articulations or a Motions type product, but not restricted to strings, what do you think?

  • @SampleLibraryReviews

    @SampleLibraryReviews

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Robert, I agree with you on CORE to PRO. It will be best utilized by those that are wanting to blend multiple libraries, or professionals that will be bussing out stems for pro level mixers to work with. I think for the "what else do you need" it will all depend on what kind of music you are making of course. For trying to Mockup classical and 90% of film score styles I agree, a choir some mandolin and maybe ethnic instruments and a jew harp ;) I see wanting a motions type functionality, but wondering if that doesn't "clutter" the usability of the instrument?

  • @CraigRodmellMusic

    @CraigRodmellMusic

    Жыл бұрын

    There isn't. That was one of the compromises I had to accept when I bought Core. There are soloists in each of the Woodwind and Brass sections. In my own scores, I use - for example - four solo horns, one for each part, which is how they would normally operate in an orchestra. At present, I am adding string solo parts from hardware that I already have, but eventually I will get a solo string library, when budget (or lack thereof) permits. Similarly, Core doesn't have a Cor Anglais, Bass Clarinet or Contrabassoon. Again, these can be added from other sources. What Core HAS given me is my own private orchestra, whose sole job is to play my music - a luxury even the likes of Beethoven didn't have! If you're interested in performing your own orchestral music, get it if you haven't already. They do have sales from time to time. I got Core in the sale they had last August, and the saving more than made up for the additional cost caused by currency conversion.

I use logics brass and woodwinds which can sound good with some fiddling and the articulations and velocity are easy to work on a laptop with minimal tracks. For strings I use spitfire epic strings which sound great and cost £29. It all runs perfectly on a 2016 12in MacBook

    That's a relevant point. A couple of years ago I bought an ex-gaming computer to use as my main Music computer. Apart from issues caused by the dodgy version of Windows that it had when I got it, the main point was getting it up to spec to run Core. To that effect, I added 16GB ram to the 8GB it had originally, making 24GB total. This proved to be a very wise move. I wouldn't even dream of trying to run Core with only 8GB of ram.

    I'm very new to Discover, as of yesterday. My question is, what is a "round robin"? The main reason I started with Discover is the percussion, that's my primary focus. Thanks for the video and listening to your comparison was awesome.

  • @SampleLibraryReviews

    @SampleLibraryReviews

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi George, welcome to the channel and thanks for the question. Round Robins are the number of samples recorded for each note at a specific dynamic for a singular articulation. The more round robins that are randomly (or sequentially triggered) the less like the human ear will hear a "machine gun" effect with all the same notes played in sequence sounding un natural. Hope this helps

    I did notice a violin sound with the oboe when I played the Discover oboe in my DAW. It sounds like a mix of the two, when all I want is an oboe (you know... because you want them separate. 🤔). I might look for a better oboe VST & use it instead of the one in Discover. I can clearly hear it in your video as well. That's basically my only complaint with Discover. I think the instruments sound great, especially for a free VST. I can't afford the Core right now. I've already put too much $ into my music lately. Thanks for the video!

If you struggle, if you are learning then get Core over Christmas sales when and only when you need it. Alternative? @@gautiersliwa @Amaya Music Hey guys. I own the studio orchestra (not pro) and I've just purchased BBC Core after a long hesitation. I guess the main aspects to take into account are time and flexibility; although I am yet to really try BBC. With BBC, you can produce orchestral music quickly without having to worry too much about mixing. It seems to be a greater learning tool if you want to experiment and practice with the orchestral sound palette. Studio Orchestra sounds great and is very flexible. You can make it sound big or intimate and the list of articulations is amazing (you even have things like perfect fourth trills with strings) Beware if you intend to use keyswitches, because not everything is on the same patch ! If your aim is not so much the process of making the sounds (the learning side) but definitely just the end result, whether orchestral or integrated to another genre, you can certainly mold the studio sounds however you want. Do also consider that the studio orchestra contains FX patches, something really important for credibility. Both have upgrades that are bit unreasonable in size, although the Studio strings upgrade does offer many divisi options, which you don't get with BBC. That's what I can say for now. Studio Orchestra I'd say is more flexible but requires much more time (you also don't get the percussion section). I've decided to really dive deep into learning the orchestra, and with the recent update of Studio One making keyswitches easy to use, I've built a quick and easy to use template for BBC with one patch of each instrument. I believe it amounts to 9GB+ (and takes some time to load). Don't hesitate if you have questions ! ;)

    There are a number of libraries out now that can achieve the bredth and width of BBCSO Core. The real question comes down to your ideas, genre, mix and use of instruments. I made list of libraries I own and what I use them for and at least one critique. Spitfire Albion 1- Perfect for large scale ensemble productions on a tight schedule such as movies, trailers, games and commercials. Cons: Despite multiple mics it is still less intimate than a dedicated section or lead. Spitfire Albion 2 - This no longer an available Albion, but their new Albion Neo takes its place. Great for homogenous movement between the string, brass and wind sections. It's design to capture emotion with non traditional orchestral instruments like, Sackbutts, Horneuphs, Recorders. This brings out character withour overpowering the piece and sitting perfectly for underscore. Con: Very unique library which mainly fills a small market of non traditional arrangements. Best really for genre pieces like WW2, European highland and Elizabethen period pieces. Sonuscore and Kirk Hunters Virtuous Ensemble The Orchestra - This is by far the most flexible, quickest and unmatched in its ability to create orchestral mock ups or finished mix. Light cpu footprint and massive amount of presets. Con: Kirk Hunter Virtuouso - Limited Articulations for core string, brass and woodwind. The Orchestra Con: Articulations are limited and fundamental. At this price point I would expect there to be more instruments. They added a percussion and piano element which is awesome and you need to plan your track. Multis on Kirk Hunters VE are extremely well sampled and arranged. I have many others but I'm finishing a project.

    May da vale. Try saying that. That’s how you pronounce it. Not that it’s important. Thanks for the content. I need to upgrade for sure I’ve taken Discover about as far as I can and need those subtle nuances to get the results I need. It’s the cost though. There doesn’t seem to be any way of emulating an orchestra realistically without spending some serious cash. It’s frustrating for those of us who just can’t afford the high prices at the moment

    The strings in DISCOVER have an exceptionally irritating volume inconsistency when I assign them to a MIDI file created from a music notation program. There is frequently a decided volume drop from one note to the next. However, this is only in the strings, not the other instruments. Is there anything that can be done about this highly annoying affectation, or is it just a fault of the program?

    I haven't run into that issue, but it might be worth double checking to make sure your velocities are fairly consistent for the notes in your MIDI track. It can make a big difference between notes, depending on the library.

    Great review 🤩🙏🏻 But I want to tell somethings about this library. At 8:43 when you demo the oboe legato patch, especially on G and D keys there is no Round Robin. I know RR work on repeating the same keys like staccato or repeating legato notes one after another, but why It’s not work in legato when the same keys come often in a melody or phrase. It's annoying to hear always the same samples when playing slow arpeggios or slow tremolos in a legato mode they sound like a car horn :( I know the sampling technology and recording are very very hard to make these products but we are in 2020 and why It's not possible, why.. Maybe in Native Instruments Kontakt, there are limitations to do that but Spitfire uses their own engine to make the BBC library. I've been following Symphony Orchestra VST's since 2000 and I don't see any big technology rises in these 20 years like my English :) Cheers...

    Libraries that have legato without machine gun effect include Sample Modeling and Aaron Venture's Infinite series. And one patch from Afflatus. Oh and LASS but that sounds awful because the change in timbre is excessive when you enable the legato round robin of only 2.

  • @SampleLibraryReviews

    @SampleLibraryReviews

    Hi Giovanni - in sampled instruments, round robins are when different recordings of the same not triggered one after the other. This ads realism to the playback as a player or section would never be able to produce the exact same sound again and again in the real world. Each note (same note repeated) would sound different. Thus triggering a different sample even though it is the same note

    I got Discover for free and I am grateful to Spitfire for making it free but there's this thing where you discover when it hasn't got legato etc and when you hear how good Core can sound that you get disappointed slightly. It's the want to play with and be able to make something beautiful, that sounds like a real orchestra, but not _quite_ getting there.

    My thoughts are that that is the general idea: it's an advertisement for the Spitfire product. That said, it's a GOOD advertisement, and one that is actually USEFUL to people. I got Discover, knowing what it was, and what it's inadquacies were. And yes, for what I really wanted to do, Discover was inadequate. However it did enable me to "dip my toes in the water", and pointed me in the direction of what Core could do. I now have Core, and am learning to use it properly. A purchase I have not regretted. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that Core is ideal for people like myself who are hobbyists, who do not have access to a real orchestra, and cannot justify the expense of either the Pro edition or the hardware to run it. Kudos to Spitfire for recognising that market and making a suitable product.

    I have an irresponsible amount of sample libraries and plugins. Orchestral libraries are starting to be like compressors (do we really need another one?) but price wise they are more for producers who are actually getting paid for their music. I'm not a fan of subscriptions for creative software but I feel we are in serious need of a top tier orchestral library that's regularly updating and improving that both the developer and user would benefit from a subscription model. In most orchestral library reviews you are paying top price for a small percentage of what the total library does better than others. There shouldn't be any "[insert feature here] is worth the price alone]" reviews. The whole thing should be worth the price.

    Totally disagree. Ensemble patches are not bad for sketching out ideas, but once you play in the properly arranged layers of sections you end up with something you can actually deliver, as an orchestra, out of the box. Ensembles are convenient and have their place in hybrid compositions, but if you want to work with "orchestra" composition then you want the sections separate. And, it is not difficult at all.
