    Whenever I see Spitfire put out those originals or things like this all I can think about is how much I would've loved these when I was starting out. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade in my 8dio Majestica if I could, I'm just saying with such small, affordable, quality non-Kontakt plugins, young producers don't know how lucky they are!

    It probably won't cut down piracy much and you shouldn't use this as a free alternative, I'd advise you to pirate and learn to make and use a huge orchestral template and as the time goes on buy and repay your duty, or at least realize that everything else would put you at such a disadvantage, and no amount of nostalgic hobbyist talking about their "what if i had this" moments will change it.

    One thing I have found great about this library is that they put the key switches for articulations way down at C-1. This will allow you to stack multiple instances of the plugin on on track and have a full range of playing with the preset keymapping making it an amazing sounding string section patch for exploration and composing as well as string pads. Try it with all the string sections together set to "long", it's amazing!

    I'm mainly here for interest's sake, as I got Discover some time ago; and last year I upgraded to Core. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that Discover is basically an advertisement for BBCSO Core and Professional. But it's a damn GOOD advertisement. And in my case, it certainly worked! I would like to get the Professional version, but both the library itself and having to get a new PC to run it are both a bit beyond my means at present. One thing that I think that both Discover and Core mean, is that some very wise person at Spitfire has recognised that there is a market in hobbyist composers like myself, which as far as I know was not catered for until Discover and Core came along. Core (and to a lesser extent, Discover) has given me my own private orchestra, whose sole job is to play whatever I tell them to. What a luxury!

I think spitfire got thinking after many complained about their Originals series being Albion recycled samples (I don't think this is bad at all, for all those who can't afford Albion One it is a great way to grab quality samples). So now it comes from another source, an excellent one indeed and we mere mortals can enjoy the same BBC orchestra quality (with less articulations options for sure but who cares) for just $49 or even free! I may be wrong but it seems to me that after recently releasing their big (and very expensive) BBC library, Spitfire maybe needed to "look more affordable" or more "student friendly".. maybe also they are investing on the future, inspiring new composers to join the party, composers who will then buy more professional (Spitfire) products in a few months/years... However, thanks for the great review, of this very affordable, and useful tool - if you do not already have any of them I suggest you grab it !.

    I'd already brought the Discover library when I watched this review - this was after watching about 40 minutes' worth of videos on Spitfire's channel plus Christian and Paul's channels. I was having fun but could not for the life of me figure out how to get my DAW to change articulations for an instrument on a single track. I thought that this must be possible - it would be ridiculous to have separate tracks for every articulation. I even created a Reddit thread for this. I've spent the best part of a day watching tutorial videos, researching on various music production websites and looking at various plugins to help me solve this problem, then at 2:58 in this video you point to me the solution. While I am glad I have now found this, I can't believe this is not better explained anywhere, including on Spitfire's own website. They talk about key switching and this UACC thingy and they talk about the padlock icon, which I was pressing and it appeared to do absolutely nothing, and the button next to it apparently did nothing. There's no mouse over tool tip either for it! This whole product is aimed at entry-level folks like me and not in a million years would I have figured this out by myself. Thanks!

    Very nicely done i will be downloading Discover soon! One minor comment anout your Beethoven project… it really needed a tempo maped conductor track to vary the tempo as a conductor would do. As it now, it sounds robotic, not the sounds themselves but the “performance” in your daw. It would have done wonders to helping making it sound more realistic as no live orchestra ever performs at a perfectly constant tempo!

    I bought Spitfire's epic strings--which was dirt cheap--last week and immediately put them to good use. What blew me away was the control over the dynamics you have from the keyboard. Then this library comes along yesterday (and I already own EW Hollywood Orchestra and a slew of other orchestral libraries). Of course, I bought it without hesitation. I had already been using the free Spitfire LABS sounds quite a bit. Spitfire is really cognizant and sensitive of their market. I wish I'd found them earlier. If I were to make one comment about their demos, is that they tend to emphasize the darker, moody side of composition. However, I do see this in many libraries--the vast majority of samples are in minor keys and really dark (Project SAM Symphobia 3 is like this as well as Eduardo Tarilonte's Best Service libraries). But getting past ALL of that--it comes down to the sound, and Spitfire excels. When (or if) I upgrade my system, I'll likely consider the higher end products. If the "cheap ones" are good, I can't imagine how much better those are.

    Thanks, great video!! I have two questions coming out of this....(1) can you take off that reverb?? I.e is that giant hall sound actually on the samples, or can you make it sound dry?? (2) similarly, when you play a note, multiple voices play....is there any granular control over this....i.e can you set it to just have single solo voices, or a limit/range etc. Thanks a bunch....happy to subscribe and looking forward to watching more of your content x

  • @SampleLibraryReviews

    @SampleLibraryReviews

    Hey the nowwhere, the sample set does contain the reverb tail sound of the hall in playback for this version of the library. The BBC full version comes with multiple microphone selections ncliding a close mic, but Note that all samples are recorded in the hall which is one of the characteristics of the library. There are no divisi controls for voices in the Discover library and only solo instruments for piccolo and basson as that is the configuration. Again, lead players and soloists are provided for a much wider collection of instruments in the full version of the plugin

    Is there a way to make it react to different velocity instead of having it mapped to the mod wheel? I wanna do big chord playing with it but the dynamics stay the same regardless of my touch. hello Sean. it can have multiple causes. if you use a keyboard with midi AND audio then maybe your midi and audio settings must be adjusted, so that only 1 channel (midi, OR audio) is beeing used. if you have only a midi keyboard, then check if any other instrument is also loaded in a other track and plays simultaniously. maybe check your template. check all audio and midi channels and settings. check all the routings from the tracks to the mixer. for the last cause, maybe deinstall and reinstall Discover. (though it is unlikely that it comes from discover)

    Can I ask about the keyswitching being down at C-2? If I am using a 61 key midi controller, can I move the keyswitching keys up to C1 so that I can use them without losing an octave of usable playing keys? I'm kind of confused as to why you would have them at -2? Wouldn't I have to shift the octave down to that to use them, then shift back up to actually play the keys?

  • @flexguyuk

    @flexguyuk

    4 жыл бұрын

    Joe Howard I’m in the same boat with my 61 keys. I octave switch for the key switch and then octave switch back to play. It will become second nature. It will be easy with Discover as there’s not too many options on key switch, it gets harder with bigger complexed libraries where you can have practically a whole octave of key switches (both white and black notes). In those instances I have written postcard sitting on the controller above the key switch keys reminding me what they do! An issue I can see with remapping the key switches is that you may run into conflict with the assigned notes keys of a particular instrument. If you’re playing piccolo then they shouldn’t conflict as piccolo plays high, but if you’re playing the tuba then you may get a key switch/note conflict.
