I buy 20l of oil from BMW for £56, comes in a cube with a tap. Oil filter is only £9 for the N47 engine. You need to be cheeky and ask for discount at the BMW parts department.

My local dealer were only too happy to apply a discount to my account. It’s not huge, but it puts them on a par with Cotswold and their forum discount.
I do my n43 every 5000, which is every 3 months for me, bought it with 70000 mile fish. It’s now got 134000 miles and been my best bmw engine ever
BMW diesel 6K miles/1 year, Petrol 8K miles/1 year whichever comes first using Quality oil and filter IMO. 👍
I do the oil myself every 6000 in my N57 as I plan on keeping it for a long time.
Trust yourself nobody else. Simple
I just got my n47 analyzed at 9700km oil change. All good with the engine, but TBN and TAN figures were already beyond its limits. 30.000km oil change recommendation is a joke

Totally agree on the oil change intervals George. But 400% brightness = 400% dazzle of oncoming drivers. See how many other cars flash their main beams at you compared to before. I tend to find if I can’t see far enough ahead at night with OE lighting I probably need to slow down. Older drivers with weaker eyes get dazzled easier.

Those bulbs are actually well designed and don't cause light scattering, as the led sits in the same place as the halogen filament
my old bmw with a n47 blew up at 140000 miles, probaably due to following the way to long inbetween oil changes. back to bmw now with a n57 engine. getting oil and filters changed every 6000-7000 miles. gonna make this one run until it falls apart but the engine still cranks!
George, I thought swapping factory fitted halogen headlight bulbs for LED would be an MOT fail. Have I got that wrong?
@Assimilator1
24 күн бұрын
Hmm, my reply seems to have been deleted by YT (them and their bloody no link policy! I tried to nerf the link too!), 2nd go..... No you haven't, it is an MoT failure (if they do their job properly). From the MoT inspection manual :- "Existing halogen headlamp units on vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986 must not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp for light source and lamp not compatible. This does not refer to complete replacement headlamp units which may be constructed with HID or LED light sources." From the Mot inspection manual section 4.1.4, available to all, just Google it.
My N47 gets an oil and filter change every 5000. The engine sounds lovely and tight. The oil does not get black after an hour of driving either it stays visibly cleaner for over a week.

it's nice that the oil filter is so accessible and easy to change
Every 5000 for me on n47 and runs sweet as a nut.....until the rocker gaskets start to fail lol
I change oil and filter every 4 months on my E60 2.5i 2006 reg
Think it depends on the miles the car dose. 90% of my driving is motorways and I change my oil every year which equals about 22k miles done b4 changing and all my bmw cars were perfectly fine after 200k and that was the N47 engine. Iv been doing this now for 21 years and al my cars have had no problems at all. So really do think it’s down to the miles you do and how fast you do them. I get my F10 B47 done at 13,000 - 15,000 miles. Mileage is at 114,000 Miles (Predominately motorway miles) Mileage type is a very important factor in general health of vehicle, I believe it is the best indicator for frequency of oil changes: as the vehicle regularly gets upto temp and has a good run. Also, I only use Shell V Power/BP Ultimate Diesel. Car is running as new: original turbo/chain/glow plugs/battery etc
yup, just changed the oil after 6.5k on my 320D. Especially on a turbo diesel, you only have to look at the oil after 100 miles to know very regular oil changes are a good idea. What do people think about oil additives like mos2 or ceratec?
With you 100% on the crackpot oil change intervals from BMW. My N43 engine NEEDS super regular oil changes, it’s super sensitive to them and if you go 18,000 miles between changes you are totally crazy IMO and WILL have something break! Every 5000 miles for me👍
George, i have the Z26 in my e91 as well, do yours flicker for a few seconds after starting the car or not ? Otherwise they are good bulbs, no errors, no adapters and they don't seem to be blinding other drivers.
No, I do two oil changes a year and the engine runs sweet 👌

Nice one!
I service my N57 every 9-10k miles / 5-6 months as I'm a fairly high mileage driver. I think time is a better indicator as it reflects the type of driving better (motorway miles in my case). I'm likely to halve my annual mileage soon because of a new job but I'll probably still service it twice a year and effectively halve the mileage interval.
Did you get any warning light when changing to led? I did and has to reprogramme the bulb check pulse off. BMWs pulse the lights to check if the bulbs are ok everytime to start up.

Hydrocarbons build up in the oil, with the EGR valve adding more nasties it just makes sense to get all that out sooner rather than later. Oil and filters are much cheaper than engine rebuild or replacement.! Your car your choice, I know what I would pick!

The oil changes are fine as they are if you do it when they say so, in many respects they could be longer. I visited castrol R&D centre some years back, they had engines going through every conceivable test. Seeing how long an engine will live at redline, seeing how long an engine will live when running it after draining the oil, engines with over a million miles, race engines, dirty diesels etc etc all doing lab and real world tests. If anything the car manufacturers are being conservative with their intervals. Oil companies want to sell oil but they also want to have the best oil otherwise we would have just stuck with mineral oil, and yes changed the oil at 5k. failures do happen but they aint because people don't change their oil every 5k.

My M57 has always been dealer maintained and has received new oil every 30,000 km. I took over the car with 285,000 km. I change it every 15,000 km. The odometer is now almost at 400,000 km and it still runs fantastic. Still the original turbo and chain. As far as I know there have been no ill effects from the 30000 km intervals.

@@marcelb2912 And my old e46 330d (M57) also had 15k oil changes, I took it from 88k to 192k, then sold it to a mate who took it to 220k (and he overshot services!), the engine was perfectly ok. Car was only scrapped at the end 2022 because he'd let it sit for well over a year 😢(ruined brakes etc) and it needed a steering rack and other stuff. But those cars didn't have a DPF, and regening the DPF does cause some fuel dilution, so not sure that the N engines are safe with the 18+k intervals.....
5k oil changes is excessive, have you proved the oil is knackered after 5k with oil analysis? My old e46 330d was fine with it's 15k changes, did 220k , no engine problems 😛

@@GeorgeAusters Ok fair point, but you strongly imply that. I was wondering if their is any Oil Analysis reports you've seen that proves your point? For the e9x M3s there's a big repository thread for OA reports in the m3post forum, it's a great database to see the service life of the oil. I wonder if there's an equivalent for our N47/57 engines? I'm going to do an OA for my 330d when it hits the 1/2 way mark on the factory OCI (2yrs/18.6k IIRC), so with me doing 10-11k/yr again, that should be in about December/January (I'm not driving it atm due to the noisy chain, hopefully change it in 2 weeks time). If the OA says all good (I'll report back here either way), I'll keep the oil until the 3/4 way mark and retest, at whatever point it says it's no good, then I'll change it (or at the factory OCI if it gets that far). Once I've found the sweet spot, then I'll change the OCI to that mileage and stop the OA (as it isn't dirt cheap, lol). That way I'll get some real data as to when I actually need to change it, rather than peoples guess. Unless the data is already out there? One thing that counts against e9x N engines though is that they have a DPF (my e46 didn't), regen'ing the DPF does cause some fuel dilution of the oil, that might make 18k interval too long.....
