Denise has a lot of positive energy at work.. there is a value to that

I was a teacher with a real passion for the job that made up for the decent, but frankly unspectacular salary. Ultimately, other factors began to grind away at that passion. I found myself becoming terribly unhappy at work. Took the gamble in leaving to work in esports. I earn less than I did as a teacher, but passion is renewed. Hustle is unending, but I feel energised by the challenges. Regret staying in teaching for so long just for the stability. Money is not the be-all and end-all. I never had the luxury of a well-to-do family, and have a family to support now. Don't stay in a job you hate. You'll end up resenting yourself.

Just using this space to share my recent job movement. I recently left a role (shipping / supply chain) where I was unhappy due to the working hours, workload and culture. Looking back, it was hard to believe how just 3 years ago I was really ecstatic when I got the offer. 2 years in and I questioned my priorities be it compensation, career progression and time outside of work. I spent another year looking around on and off before finally pulling the trigger to quit without a job secured. The 3 months long notice period was something not a lot of hiring companies were willing to overlook. After a short 3 months break when I coincidentally met my partner, I got multiple offers (and rejections) from a few companies. It was hard to decide between them but I finally settled on something with better working hours so I can live life. I may be speaking from a position of privilege relatively but I do encourage everyone to self evaluate, go out and chase that dream lifestyle.

It is best to leave an job which makes us unhappy as there is better opportunities out there . Passion and joy were the key to an happy job

When you have a family to support, personal happiness takes a back seat. We do what we must to ensure financial stability (or try our best to) for the people that depend on us to put food on the table.

Funny thing is, my current company I’m in - the person who hired me has resigned, the person who brought me in has resigned, the person who trained me has resigned and now there’s even more turnover. Waiting for my turn next maybe ? 🤣🤣

Great discussion! But Nicole gonna be sad because the conversation shift from her being the victim into the problem lol. Anyway, i think nobody address the elephant in the room - which is why are the employers(many) often gave the wrong expectation/requirement during hiring and how can we improve on that part? Personally, i feel there's a big problem with HR scene in Singapore, which is why many talents are loss and hiring are poor. Would be nice if you guys can talk about this!

Boils down to self-awareness. If you’re skilful, passionate and excellent attitude, usually the next company values and pays you more. But if you’re average, stick to your current company until you get better. However, if your company especially boss is toxic, leave immediately.

I'm working in my 6th job now. 1st: 3 years, 2nd: 2 weeks, 3rd: 1 year, 4th: 2 months, 5th: 4 years, 6th: 6 years and counting. I know what I want in my job and what I don't. Most people that job-hops is because they do not know what they want in their career and still looking for that "perfect" job which they will never find...

To add on I think there are some who knows what they want pretty well but just get hit by a series of bad experiences/bad luck that they didn't really go into the job they expected they would. E.g. job scope differences, bosses expectations that are ridiculously high, sudden injury.. Ofcourse, not representing the majority haha...

@26:18 JP is so right... I love my current job & current company & colleagues, but the pay progression is really really bad. I'm so torn between going for higher-paying job and forsaking this lovely job, or staying with miserable pay :(

I have to say that I feel that life is unpredictable, I do not want to spend my time slogging away. It's not really about having that instant gratification. More of enjoying/doing while I can. Who knows what will happen? I was in my first job for 3 years. I would define a good boss as one that gives clear instructions and guidance. Caring is a bonus. The could be bosses who are ridiculous and self-contradictory. I think at the end of the day, as employee a bad boss ask questions but does not listen, and cannot really lead, just delegate. But I know my ex-boss was busy. But my boss was probably too busy. Colleagues were great, mostly. Honestly though I think the main reason that I left was not being appreciated, overworked and no growth. I should have left earlier, I'm at a much better place now. Not the best but better.

I see many people especially in SG saying they have to work in a job they hate due to commitments and needing to pay the bills. Not wrong, but here's my 2 cents coming from someone who hated my job. 1. Don't take up too much liabilities especially when you are still finding the career path you want. 2. This gives you flexibility to choose and have options instead of being tied down and giving yourself these "reasons" 3. I used to hate my corporate job, but I chose to leave and reduced my expenses by a lot. 4. This gave me headspace and room to think/try out stuff. 5. Money can be earned but time cannot. We're not born in this world to work, pay bills and die. Don't wait till it's too late to pursue something you've always wanted :)

There is no perfect job. If you have passion you will enjoy your work. Give yourself 3 years. “Good” employer/employee is subjective.

Truth is, passion will die over time. When u have a family to feed.. bills to pay.. sometimes u just have to take a job that pays the bill and get the hell out of work on the dot.

Ooh. What an apt time to stumble upon this video. What an even more apt time to be told that you guys are hiring. Are you guys open to offshore applicants :D? That aside, it's interesting to see how the comments below are a healthy ratio of leave : stay. I think it really reflects the shift in mindset and the generation that we grew up in. 10 years ago, if you told people that you up and quit your job in weeks or months, people will frown at you and call you crazy. Today, if you feel like quitting your job because you can't take it, you have folks supporting you and telling you to go for it. Baby boomers were raised in a time where job opportunities were scarce and hard to come by, we were raised in a time where mental health slowly became a topic of importance and now the Gen Zs are fully embracing it. I don't ever think we'll ever find an absolute answer to the conundrum. But it's nice that there are people who can support whatever your decisions you make and still have the heart to tell you that you will need to bear the consequences of your actions, because that's just life. There is no wrong or right choices, you simply tank the choices you make and you go to your grave at the end of the day (hopefully) smiling that you did the right shit in life. I'm personally going through a conundrum of my own. Stuck with a high paying managerial job that I lucked out in getting, and a part-time job that pays me shit but I love what I do. 2-3 weeks in, it's becoming apparent that neither are working out for me. Should I stay or leave? Up to this point, I can't even tell. My full-time job scope largely misaligns with my title and subjects me to mental abuse daily, part-time job has lovely colleagues and I love what I'm doing but I'm aware of the financial SNAFUs in the company. Do I have bills to pay? Yes. Do I need the money to pay them, not entirely. But being someone who hates unemployed while I job hunt, I've decided to stick it out for another week or month. Every week you survive is a step closer to a month anyway. I personally lean towards happiness and mental health, and that's regardless if you have bills to pay. But at the end of the day, you decide if you're willing to face the price of the choices you make, that's the most important thing.

Sometimes you just need a break, and attack back at it, evaluate your options, and cut off the distractions. Like me, now taking a break from work after 10 years (FbB&Sports careers) to re-evaluate myself. I'm 31yo and unemployed now, quit the job that I love due to rotten managerial decisions. Totally no growth, no support, and no opportunities for upgrading. Probably considering a career change while keeping my side hustle alive.

It's true. I would also see how the interviewer conducts the interview and who is he in the company. it goes both ways.

I worked at a place where I was allow to do my own things and the company earned alot of money from it (not alot like breaking ground but happy enough to keep it going) the boss thn sold the company and stripped all that away and made alot of mistakes that made me do very few things. the new boss promoted a person in charge and started to penalised every mistake made and tried to make people with "high salary" quit. Many left, some stayed because they believe they did/do nothing wrong. In the end, many of us got termination. Imo I rather get the termination because the PIC is responsible for my departure. The cost cutting was horrible to the point of getting approval for doing daily ordering.

As much as Denise says burnout is a buzz word, from studies on it, it really is a systemic problem. For example, before and during covid, you have extremely high attrition among nurses. While we call nurses heroes and clap for them, do the working conditions ever improve?

There is no prefect job I thought I left a f job but end up join another 2 f up jobs and now the third job and I still feel is not a good fit, u need to suffer during the day to get money so u could enjoy during Friday night and weekend

i had a job that paid slightly higher than my previous but the workplace was super toxic. think high turnover rates(even with like less than x amount staff) and errr questionable employers. i was only 5? 6? months into the job. and i was super on the fence on wanting to quit or not bcos it'll reflect on my resume. but i did. it was the best decision tbh. it's not worth staying at somewhere you are not happy. it will rly cost you your mental health & dreading going to work is really the hardest thing cos after all u spend 70%? of ur time at work. my take is, if you're not happy just leave. but also speaking from a pov where i don't have a family to support 🥲
