Hi, I love your content! Is there shuttle service from the airport? I don't want to rent a car and have to deal with scetchy roads and I don't plan on leaving the resort anyway.

Thanks! If you're staying at the Hotel Portillo (as opposed to the Octagon or Inca Lodge) for a week, you usually have a free RT transfer by the hotel. Otherwise, they can provide one for a cost. When I was at the airport, there was a service offering transportation to Portillo, but I wasn't familiar with them and had already arranged a transfer through the hotel. Much easier than having to deal with a rental, chains, and driving!

Yes, at Portillo now. There's been a lack of snow this year so far, but the weather is perfect. Hopefully they'll get more snow in a couple weeks if you make it down here. The forecast is for sun for the near future.

There should be snow - the question is how much and what quality. Looks like there will be new snow on 8/6, but the question is how much. The forecast amount changes all the time, so hopefully you get a good amount!

How much $$ is the room ? I was there a few years ago and the restaurant looked worse than the cafeteria at my local high school. You are likely much better off driving there daily from Los Andes where you can find a normal hotel ...

The rooms can go for as much as $1k a night in the high season! It's a tough decision - more affordable accommodations require the drive, which may be impossible if they close the road due to snow. I've heard that happens more frequently on the road to Portillo than the road to Valle Nevado, which rarely closes. So you'd have to accept that risk when flying all the way to Chile. That may be why they can charge so much. Last year I heard the road was closed three days in a row in July. Great for people already at the resort but not those trying to get there.

Sorry, but you are wrong! Othres like Germany, Norway, Austria, Italy, USA, and Kanada just to name few have also special forces trained to fight in the mountains. Other special forces of these countries such as SAS(UK), KSK(Germany) or US have a special mountain trainig!

Yes, absolutely, the Chilean Special Forces soldier I rode the lift with said other countries have troops who train to fight in the mountains and even mentioned that the Americans had recently come down to train with the Chileans. He said the difference is that the armies of those other countries do not have a designated special forces unit that trains only for mountain fighting. He said only Chile and Switzerland do, and they have that kind of unit because their two countries are entirely mountains. Certainly, other countries will train to fight in the mountains as well.

that is wrong, Germany, France, Norway and Austra has such troops as well but for instance the Germany mountain troops has been or can be assigend to other task and missions as well. The Germany and the Austrian Mountain troops have even special eqipment. In each of the German and Austrian Mountain Batalion you will further find high mountain ranger. By the this units train together with swiss guys even that Austria und Switzerland are not mebers of the NATO. The training programs for the high mountain rangers is a joint program of Germany and Austria. This program is open for other partner Armed Forces too and as I am sure in the past some Chile Arrmy officers has past succesful this program as well. I asume this Chile Soldier just didn`t know that or forgott it. @@SkiBoyNY.
