Should You Put The Acerbis 6.6 Gallon Gas Tank On Your Suzuki DR650

Ойын-сауық

Are you wondering what to swap your stock tank out with on your DR650?
I was too.
I decided to go with the Acerbis 6.6 gallon gas tank. Why not go big, right.
So this video is about my experience thus far with that particular tank.
After over a 1000 miles I can say that I'm pretty happy with it. My only con is the fitment, when the tank is full it can rub on the oil cooler. That could eventually cause damage to the tank while riding on rough terrain. Not a problem on asphalt though. Still a problem though and I've kind of addressed it. We'll see. On the plus side, you can get lots of miles out a tank a gas. My tests have given me around a 300 mile range before hitting reserves. That's a pretty good peace of mind!

Great video. I just picked up the 6.6 and luckily the fuel line on the 4.9 ims tank ive been usingwas 2 inches too short to take the bile for a ride. Thay has allowed me to read forums and watch videos like yours. 2nd petock is on order, and youre the first person ive seen mention the oil cooler rub. Ill definitely be looing into that to stop it before it ever happens. Pounding out desert miles is why i got this tank!!! Looks pretty sick too imo.

The 6.6 gallon tank can rub the oil cooler. I switched to the 5.3 gallon and no issues.

I never had that problem of rubbing... Put 40k miles on mine. I have the 5.3 on DR i have now (just bought). I'll put the 6.6 on it as soon as I get some other stuff I need to do to it first. Setting it up like the one i had before. I just hope it at least gets the same mileage as one before 250 miles to reserve.

Yeah, the 6.6g is a bit large but rather than switch tanks for back country riding, which is a little bit of a pain, just fill it halfway. Getting a DR650 is on my bucket list (I have the DRZ400S now) so after watching this video I think I'd go with the the 5.3g tank when the time comes. Great thorough video.

I just bought the 5.3 gallon tank to put on my 2023 DR 650, I’m looking forward to spring to try it out, I’m going to order the extra petcock too, then I’ll install them. Keep up the great work. You give me some great ideas for mine. Maybe someday we may cross paths, as I love riding in the Swells, as I live 4 miles from one of the entrances here in the Price area, and I’m hoping to make it down to Southern Utah.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights. I've got an upgraded tank on a DRZ400, and kept thinking of putting one on a TW200, but just double stock, not adventure tour size. I've spent some time wondering about sneaking a tank under the seat, behind the airbox. I think for my riding where I want to be on dual-track/fire roads with some single track, I may be better served by a fuel bag to fill up before a long jaunt.

I'm leery on bags for fuel, just how durable are they. I prefer the MSR metal bottles for extra fuel carry. I also carry a rotopax but I had to fix that due to leakage. The metal bottles thus far have been the only containers that haven't caused me a problem.

You might try to put some rubber mud flap material under the tank it won’t compress, and also put a pice between the tank and oil cooler. That’s just an idea.

Tank is on. Easy peasy. Didn't fit with the Procycle seat (pushed the brackets too far back). I think this could be solved by sitting on the seat to flex the pan down and take up that space. But I had a Sergeant seat on hand that fit easily (previous owner had put it on). @@precipiceofgrind

most people around here use the 5 gal tank...of course we don't have an issue for range to next gas. I think that the 5 gal and a ropak 5 or 10 liter mounted inside the tusk rack opposite the muffler side would keep the weight a bit lower and still get a little extra range.
