Got this MacBook in 2018 and still use it today. Definitely still works great with the caveat that it can get hot and sometimes sound like a plane taking off. Good video!

I bought this back in 2021 and it still feels so much ahead of its time especially with the touchbar its crazy, don't even wanna upgrade

I've been using this laptop for 5 years, and it is definitely usable in 2024 still. There are not many complaints here other than the cooling problem, I'll see if I can fix it by cleaning the inside and re-applying the thermal paste.

Someone is offering 350 usd for a refurbished MacBook a1707 , i need a laptop for coding and to learn video editing,is it a good deal?? Shoud i go for it in 2024

I like the computer but i hate the keyboard. When i type it just doesn't work, you can't get the right angle on the keys. Also the ribbon cable to the display is bound to break. Quite a tricky repair but otherwise a decent model can be a good machine. I had a few bugs where i became stuck which wasn't ideal when my display wasn't working. But i worked my way through these so far.

Good and informational. Found one of these bad boys for £190 and got it for work. Not regretting it yet.

@@isaiahcruz8484 If you do get one, make sure to use a very think keyboard protector cover. This is going to protect any dust from getting under the butterfly keys and causing it to cease working. One downside of the keyboard protector is that due to the low clearance there is a chance of it coming in contact with the anti-reflective coating on the screen, so if you see any impression clean it regularly with soft microfiber cloth for laptop screen. Also, the 2018-19 butterfly keyboard models are more reliable.

Yes! I would be careful though with software support. In 6-12 months Apple may drop support for downloading and updating Final Cut Pro on the 2017 MacBook Pros.

Just got one with an i7-7700hq amd radeon 555 pro 16gb of ram and 512gb ssd for 247

I'm using a Lenovo laptop currently with a Ryzen processor and I'm constantly getting browser warnings that " CPU Usage is too high ", it is a 2. something GHZ but still.. 5-10 tabs can be handled. Terry, I'm looking at 16 GB i5 7 series and Iris Plus graphics for this model, should I buy it? Make the switch? Your thoughts?

the non touch bar macbook pro 2016 and 17 have upgradable SSDs! mine had 16gb ram and 128 SSD but i put in a 1tb m.2 drive with an adapter and it worked

The 2017 MacBook Pro can go up to Ventura. Then Sonoma was released after that, and sequoia is coming this fall. After they get the latest major release they get 3 years of support/ security updates.

I have this computer since it came out and it got me through hs and college. My downside now is just the battery life, the battery just drains faster now but it’s a 7 year old computer so not even mad about that. I think you shouldn’t buy this if you could find a better or newer Mac for a used price. It’s still a good computer but it’s like buying an iPhone 8 in 2024 knowing the battery isn’t gonna be as good as buying an iPhone XS

Same, mine rlly started to slow down though in the past year. Basic things like having multiple apps open were impossible. I recently upgraded to an m3 with 16gb of ram and night and day difference

no the ram is soldered on, it cannot be upgraded, but the ssd can be upgraded (non touch bar models only!)

If you’re just using it for work stuff like browsing the web, Microsoft apps, etc I would recommend the 2018 MacBook Air. However anything that is more performance heavy might make the 2017 MacBook Pro a good option.

Everything is soldered, however on the non-touch bar 13” 2017 MacBook Pro you can upgrade the hard drive to I think a 2tb SSD. It uses a proprietary connector so you may want to research adapters specifically designed for that MacBook.

It goes up to macOS Ventura, which is the second latest OS. Typically most developers support the last 3 versions. I would try searching "Your software name+ system requirements macos" on google to double check.

I only need this for class online and typing documents like basics! I wanna keep an ecosystem (iPhone 11pro max user) I was going to get a Lenovo Yoga otherwise! Help 😂

It depends on many factors. If U actually want to do some work then go for the MacBook but if U just want to watch movies and surf the web,then go with the iPad.

Currently it doesn't get the latest major MacOS updates, but you will be able to get about 2-3 years of the latest Microsoft and Adobe apps, and 5+ years of support for web apps and applications downloaded off the web like google chrome.

I don't think so processor and graphics wise, but the 2018 air is going to be good enough as long as your not using pro software. The 2018 air also has touch ID and can run the latest version of MacOS which is something to consider.

I think if you were just running DJ software you should be good, but I would lookup the recommended specs from your software provider. If you were to run multiple things at once like lights, ect. it may be better to find one with a quad-core processor and 16gb of ram.

I would think it would be fine, because I have a robotics coach who used it for programing, but that was back in 2019. I would think if it handled it then it would handle it now.

Just found one for $240 after shipping. I’m thinking I found a decent deal, can’t wait to see what shape it’s in when it shows up.

@@talelust if you can find a working one like I did with only scratches and scuffs that don’t effect it’s daily use or performance for less than $300 I would do it. It’s a beautiful machine and despite its short coming the build quality and ease of use of a relatively modern Mac machine is almost second to none.

Maybe on adobe premiere, but Apple’s video editing software like Final Cut Pro and iMovie are unsupported. It will also likely be 1080p video editing. Depending on the intensity of video production you do a newer M series MacBook would be better. You can save your files to an external hardrive to save costs on internal storage.

General computing and casual video editing or coding. No more recommended for professional work (when you have to earn money off of it). But budget will be the ultimate deciding factor. Also the used machine’s battery health may not be as a newer one but plenty of computer still

Seems kinda cheap. I would be careful, especially if it’s online. The keyboards on these are known to fail at times and while it may seem fine, there may be a key or two that won’t click right.

I have never used xcode before and I tried looking up system requirements and was only able to find the minimum macOS version for it. I would recommend maybe looking into a newer macbook like a 2019 one if you want to be able to use it for a few years. It looks like just coding stuff, so I don't think you need a powerful computer to run it well.

Unfortunately there is no mac models out there that are touchscreen. They incentivize you to buy a macbook and an ipad.

Anyone getting an Intel Processor over the Apple Silicone processor on a laptop in 2023 must have lost their mind 😂😂 It is like night and day with the battery life and also the coolness of the bottom of the laptop on an M processor. Unless you need a dual boot of windows OS, no way is it worth saving money for an old Intel laptop. I can bet anyone right now that does simple task like school/work, watching videos, browsing the web that once you go M, no way you are going back to the Intel with that lousy fan and heat that can burn you skin 🤣🤣🤣

I would say yes if you plan on keeping it for only about 2-3 years. The reason why is developers like Microsoft might stop supporting their applications on it. If you have extra money I would go with a used M1 macbook air just because it will get a few more years of support and the battery will last longer.
