We had three cats, but our fifteen months old grey tabby just vanished one early morning, never to return. We supposed a coyote but there is no way to determine, in any event it was sad because our five year old grey tabby loved being together. God bless.

I have one right now and have had him for about two months - he is a foster "fail"/success. I'm utterly torn on getting a second. The thing that makes me want to is that he is such a sociable cat, he could play with me for hours. I have also shown him a few videos of cats playing with other cats and he is always really interested and then seems to get sad - he has a kind of sad meow and turns his back on the video 😢 It feels too early because he is so new to me, but I can see he's lonely.

I wanted a single cat and was allowed to adopt the runt of a litter of 4 Burmese mix 6 month old kittens. After a few months, I began to feel that he was lonely and adopted another 6 mo Russian blu mix kitten for him. From the first night, the kitten cried, howled and kept running to the door--scratching and clawing to meet my 9 mo old. After hours of trying to calm him down, I put him in the carrier to walk him around to let him see my boy. On impulse, I opened the carrier, he sprang out and off they went, romping and wrestling, playing all morning til they fell asleep exhausted from all the excitement. Instant besties like peanut butter and jelly. 6 months later, I adopted a 3 mo Siamese princess for the boys with an equally smooth introductions for all 3.

Back in 1995 we had three cats. Fred, the oldest one, had to be put down. Frac, one of the two remaining cats, hid under our bed in mourning, not eating for 3-4 days until we found her. She couldn't walk, and appeared to be near death's door herself at this point. Took her to the animal hospital at Iowa State University. Five days later she was greatly improved, able to walk again, and was recovering. I force fed her with a feeding syringe for 10 days before she finally starting eating on her own. All from one cat grieving for another.

I adopted 2 cats right away. They were not a bonded pair, but the organization through which we adopted them, has placed them together. My boy cat had high levels of anxiety, and he could not be alone in a room. So they paired him with this girl cat - and she became his "social worker". So when we came in to adopt this beautiful ginger boy, it was a no brainer to take them both home - I would never leave a kitty behind, and it felt that way if we only took him. I never regretted my decision. First, they intertain each other, they play and "hunt" together (they are 100% indoors cats). Second, they keep an eye on each other and if one is in trouble (gets locked in a room or something), the other one always makes sure the human helps them. And the fact that I gave home to 2 kitties in need makes it icing on a cake. I don't know why would people adopt only 1 kitten (unless they already have existing cats athome). I agree 100% with you, Mallory! 2 cats is always better than 1

In 2020 I lost my girl. I was not going to get another cat right away. Sitting home alone without working I couldn't do it. Adopted a male from the shelter. A month later I picked up a female from a barn. He's huge so I left her in the kennel for a bit to let him smell her. They sniffed each other through the kennel and were indifferent, so I let her out. Never had a problem between them.

For me we got a kitten and always knew we wanted two but we felt we weren't ready for two at the time. 9 months later she's doing well but definitely looked a little bored and lonely. We went back and got another kitten. Boi she was not happy at first, but it only took like two days of hissing after that they were already grooming each other. Marcy definitely enjoys having another cat around and while she'll never not be sort of distant and reserved, she came out of her shell a lot more and I love seeing them play around, chase each other etc.

I 100% agree! I have 4 cats right now. I got my first two kittens almost 7 years ago now. The woman who put me in touch with her friend, whose cat had kittens, told me at the time that I had to pick two from the litter. I was hesitant at first as I only wanted one kitten, but she explained how sad the kitten would be by itself and how the two would keep each other busy playing and grooming and sleeping that eventually I agreed. I honestly can not even explain how grateful I am that she convinced me to take two instead of one! It is beyond worth the sacrifice of having an extra litter box and more hair around the house to have multiple cats!

When our cat passed in March last year it took some time for us to be ready. He was almost 18 and we loved him very much. When we were ready we went to the local shelter to adopt a cat or kitten. This shelter is wonderful, it's called Meow Cat Rescue in Kirkland, if anyone lives in the area I strongly recommend this shelter. We thought we were going to adopt one cat or a kitten and learned that it is much better to adopt two. I had some persuading to do (he wasn't sure about two) but we adopted a pair of kittens, bonded siblings. They sleep together, groom each other, play together, chase each other around and are always there for each other. They are very different personalities and it is more work but it's worth it. The shelter talked about single kitten syndrome and how important it is for a kitten to not be alone. I'm glad we brought both of them home and very glad that the shelter prioritizes the well-being of cats.

This comment made me laugh. And we went to the shelter to adopt they said that two kittens were the same amount of work as one. We knew that wasn't going to be true! We adopted our two and as you said, they get into 10 times the mischief! I'm Happy we got them and very glad that the shelter doesn't adopt them out singly, it's much better for them to not be alone.

Getting a second was a no brainer, in my case. I became a guardian to my first, Cyrus, when he was about 6-7 months around the beginning of the year. Very curious, very bitey, chaotic zoomies. Also seemed to miss me/company if left alone for extended periods of time e.g. meowing loudly (complaining?) upon my return. One instance when a relative dropped something off at my place before I returned from work Cyrus apparently meowed a lot at her, went to smell her then started rubbing all over a pair of my shoes while continuing to meow. Basically became clear to me also that he was somewhat undersocislised and a friend of his own kind would be beneficial to his development. First positive sign upon bringing Emerald home (mid-late March) and setting the carrier down inside: zero hissing and lots of sniffing from both kids. Was fully prepared to keep her in a separate room and do slow intros but both were so curious and kept going to either side of the door I ultimately decided to just supervise them and just allow her to explore my place. I observed lots of positive body language e.g. Cyrus just following her everywhere, often side splooting near her, Emmie just following her nose around the place and setting firm boundaries (occasional hiss or sharp meow) whenever Cyrus went to tackle her from overexcitement lol. I remember him being calm for a brief moment and she went over to boop noses with him 🥹 The two of them were cuddling within hours. I got very lucky. Also Cyrus' biting reduced by about 80% since Emmie's arrival. On the occasion he does he's significantly more gentle. He was a bit of a handful at the start but because Emmie's so easy to look after it has barely added to the work/careload. Getting her has also reassured me that they can keep each other company whenever I need to work in the office or otherwise be away from home for hours on end. I feel like they get along well and I'm very glad they have each other to grow up alongside and learn from one another (Emmie's about 1-2 months younger than Cyrus). Highly recommend getting 2, especially with younger cats.

I got two litter mates. I was already offered one, but I "demanded" two. At the time I was away all day, each day, so I didn't want a cat to be alone. I also got the first pick and because it was a litter of 4 females and thus "the best" gender combination wasn't a consideration, I picked the two who were already bonded the most. I haven't regretted my decision a second and will always prefer a multi cat home

I got a 2nd cat, and only after 9 months am I finally able to let them out together with out barriers. (Together, supervised and only for a limited amount of time.) They use to fight with fur flying as soon as they saw each other. After 9 months of feeding through a door, feeding while looking at each other but separated, and all the other cat introduction stuff they are finally making progress. I would love to hear your thoughts on when to NOT get a second cat and what it looks like if two cats can never get along. Because I tried to research it and I couldn't find any answers! Maybe I made the wrong decision getting a second cat, but I can't abandon either of them, it would break my heart.

A singleton came into my life at 5 weeks old and I just thought to myself, wouldn't my young self want a friend besides my guardian to play with? So I sought out another singleton, or one that didn't get along with its littermates. Paired them together and now they wrestle and chase each other, and generally wreck my house everyday. Nothing beats the sound of galloping kittens.

I adopted a one year old, rescue siamese whose profile stated that he should be in an only cat, no children household. As it turned out he became an indoor/outdoor cat. When outdoors, he visited the neighbourhood cats, tried to make friends with a racoon and played with the dog next door. He also visited every neighbour on the street who happened to be outside. So I decided that after this demonstration of outgoing behavior, he may be open to accepting a second cat. I ended up adopting a second, equally outgoing siamese, a year younger than the first one. I introduced them slowly and honestly to this day I'd say it's a love/hate relationship. I think they're both alpha's. They never sleep together or groom each other but they do wrestle and chase each other regularly. The younger one often growls when the older one tries to play/ wrestle with him. I don't know if this is play or aggression. All things considered, I think both their lives are considerably more exciting living with each other even though their relationship is likely only one of tolerance..

I adopted a kitten for the first time and I noticed she wanted to play with my dog, but he didn't want anything to do with her. I thought she needed a friend so I got a 2nd kitten. Not knowing any better, I didn't introduce them slowly and my first kitten didn't like it at all. Her whole personality changed. She didn't want to play and started peeing everywhere. This went on for weeks. I almost gave the other kitten back, but it turned out that my first kitten was very sick. Once she got better, she started eating and playing again. Now they play together and groom eachother. I'm so happy they're friends now 😊

I found a stray kitten near my home. I was not able to locate the mom or siblings after several attempts to locate them. 2 weeks later, I went out for a walk near where I found the stray kitten. Guess what, I found another kitten near where I had found the 1st one. They are about the same age and I suspect they may be siblings, even though they are different colors. The first kitten really perked up and was able to burn some extra energy off. They are bonded, eat, and play together, which is helpful so that they don't need 24/7 attention from me.

I just got a second cat. He decided to adopt me. My first Kitty she is 11 1/2 years old that I got when she was 6 months. She is indoor. Anyways I just bought my first home in May in mobile park and there is a bunch of feral cats all around. One of them, a sad old 10 + tuxedo with a club ear has taken a fancy to me. He is not he fael but belonged to the people that live behind me. I work from home and have watched him getting bullied and started feeding him outside he was really trying to get indoors but Sunny was not happy. I went to go feed him on Wed and his club ear had explode with an infection. I took him to vet. He's mine now! I brought him in the house with a carrier my kitty saw him in it and was like ohhh not good and has been somewhat nice to him after that. So his healing eaten food used cat box but moping. He is really sweet though when you pet him. Wasn't planning on getting a second one

I have an elderly cat and a 5-year-old. They get along just fine but it's more like they co-exist in the same space. They'd probably both be fine being an only cat but I think that having 2 is better as long as they're well-suited to each other. So, when the older one is gone, I'll be fostering and if I come across a cat that my younger one clicks well with, I'll adopt that cat. And if that never happens, she'll still be used to being around other cats.

It took about a week to introduce than and, after they free to mix and mingle, the older one spent a couple of weeks following the younger one about like a love-sick teenager. The decision to go from a one-cat house to a two-cat house wasn't easy. But I decided to take the chance and it worked.

They couldn't be more different both in size or personally an dont always get along peacefully, but they still are bonded an need each other. Its been. a work in progress all this year to finally get to where our little 6 pound orange cat can spend the night outside of our bedroom with her 13 pound American bobtale big brother. They sometimes get jealous an even though my big boy has a heart of gold he just doesn't realize how powerful he is when they play.

We brought in our first boy in November? Late October. He was a stray. . .who eventually just refused to leave our yard. After a couple of weeks of no one claiming him, and the vet saying he had no chip. . .he was happily our first cat. He was definitely no older than a year, and showing signs of just not having enough stimulation. Extremely curious in the neighborhood cats that came by. . .and when our second stray turned house cat started coming around. . . and was clearly in even worse condition (literal scabs from cat fights and such a poor coat condition) we decided to at least what would happen. . .this was before I understood the need for quarantine and proper introductions. Our orange was SO HAPPY to suddenly have a brother. . .who was. .. admittedly, a little apprehensive about someone abuptly trying to groom him at all hours of the day. I joke that they bonded over their mutual disgust over the fact we were also dog sitting not three days later. Thankfully and luckily for us. . .other than the fact our orange lad has trouble with the idea of 'boundaries' and our second lad (who is older by about a year) being FIV+. . . they coexist beautifully. Now the debate in our household is what age the eventual third cat is going to be. . .hubby wants an adult cat because they tend to adopt slower. . .I want a kitten to help wear our orange lad out. . .who knows we may end up with four someday. They're both happy, healthy and the best decision we could have ever made.

Miles tolerates Wyatt at best lol Miles is laid back and downright lazy; whereas, Wyatt is loud and a bit of a bully (loves to wrastle). We had our first cat for about 6 months before we got the second one. We got both of them as kittens so the first one was still fairly young when we got the second kitten. We felt like the first cat had a lot of spare energy so I thought a play mate would be beneficial to her (my partner never wanted a second cat). The introduction went fairly well, a bit of hissing and skepticism for the first week or two which seems to be normal. The first cat would get annoyed with the kitten occasionally since he liked playing in quite a rough way but she would just let him know that she wouldn't have it and then they'd stop playing and move on. We thought he would stop being as rough when he grew older. Now they're both 6 years old and the playing remains very much the same. He's too rough and she gets annoyed and tells him off. The difference is that he's physically bigger and stronger so she doesn't seem as comfortable playing altogether (at least not when the playing transitions into "fighting" of any sort). This really bothers me and I feel sorry for her, she acts quite skeptical about him even when they're not playing as if she's assuming he'll attack her at any given point... I don't regret getting the second cat cause he's my baby and I love him so much. And it's not all bad. They do groom each other quite often, and in scary situations such as going to the vet they really seem to take comfort in being together. Plus despite her skepticism she does engage playing with him quite a bit as well. That's my experience. If the second cat were to pass away I wouldn't get a new second cat since our first cat seems to be a solid only cat (she's quite I dependant in general in addition to everything else I've written). On the other hand I think the second cat definitely thrives with having a cat friend at home.

One is quiet, timid, and low energy. The other is vocal, highly energetic and exhausting. Aside from both loving to cuddle with their human, they are totally opposite in character ( & in looks.). I wish they were a better fit for each other. 😢

I have a 7 year old boy that has lived prior with several kitties, but has been on his own now for ~4 years since I moved back in with my parents and couldn't bring my roommates' cats with me. I recently adopted a 5 mo old kitten and my older boy, Jack, has adopted him like one of his own in a few short days. I'd tried to do the slow introduction method, and I know I'm an outlier by a LARGE margin, but the kitten (his name's Pippin) was so confident right off the bat that he basically barged in, no fear, and made himself right at home. I feel that really helped Jack acclimate too, as well as his past experiences with both older cats and kittens alike (we'd fostered a kitten before in my old place when I was living with my roommate and her cat). My boy had been experiencing a lot of separation anxiety after covid and I know that he would benefit from a friend to keep him company while I'm at work (I work a 8-5 job Mon-Fri). The most important thing about bringing a second cat into the home is knowing your own cat well. Since Jack is a sweet, mellow, and social cat, I had a feeling he would acclimate quickly and easily, and I'm happy to say I was right. :) Good luck to any and everyone looking to bring in a furry friend!

2 Cats Here since kittens Brother and Sister and best decision I have learned Cats need each other they bond since little kittens how could we possibly seperate them! Its just plain wrong. Species need or should be with their own...Ive been preaching this ever since on other social media platforms. The same words you said imagine us being with cats only and no human contact serás un fair right. I have 2 extra large liter boxes use to be 3 keep them clean daily/nightly. Both mostly eat canned and portioned dry food. Thank you for bringging such an important subject up since way too many people dont even realize it yet

I have 1 cat but have been wanting a second. She is eight years old. When she was a kitten, there were other cats and dogs in the house, but they did not interact with her much. The cats didn't want to play and she stayed away from the dogs. So she has always been more close with people. My friend took care of her for a while when I went to college and she got a bunch of kittens, which my cat did not like and did not get along with. She lived with my dad for a while and she did not get along with his girlfriend's small dog when she brought him over. When she finally moved in with me after college, my dad had a new cat for a few days before I picked her up and she did not want to be anywhere near him. She just hid and hissed, but they didn't really fight. They were also not introduced properly at all. So I am torn! I think she could do really well if she had a kitty friend, but I worry because she does not have a good history with other animals. :(

One is more active than the other. Still, we think there are clear benefits to their mental health being together since birth. I wonder how they would take to a 3rd cat in the future?

Thanks for the video :) But I’m so confused right now. It feels like no advice are the same on this topic across youtube. I’m soon getting a kitten and allready have a senior, strictly indoor (spayed) cat that’s 14. She has lived alone with us for about 5 years since our first cat died at 11. Before that, she grew up with him. Lately she has slowed down and naps a lot. Vet says she’s healthy but needs to lose weight, she’s not interested in toys/play. Just in snacks, sunlight and cuddles. I’m hoping a second cat could give her some same species companionship. Also because I soon have to spend more time away from home. I was told that a kitten is easier to introduce, because they’re smaller and more submissive. So less of a threat to a resident cat. Also that it’s best to get a cat of the opposite sex. So we’re getting a neutered male kitten. And I’m planning a slow, gradual introduktion, but now I don’t know if it’s all a terrible idea? Should we not get the kitten? A vet just told me that cats a solitary and stress a lot when there’s more than one in the home. What do you advice? 🙏

I have six cats and I would say that most of them get along really well. There is the occasional hissing when one takes it too far or one does not want to be bothered but for the most part. I attribute that to the fat they most have been around other cats since they were all very young. The only one who isn't is our oldest and I attribute that to that to her being the only cat for a few years before the other cats came in. That and she may have some tortitude that makes her more temperamental with the other cats.

I have a 14 month old purebred Siberian I got at 6 months old. We have no other pets. I play with him multiple times a day and he has plenty of toys, trees, windows etc to enrich his life. But he still gets bored, and has a ton of energy. We’re thinking about getting another kitten from the same exact breeder. Which means it’ll most likely be from the same parents too. They’d only be about a year and a few months age difference. And both boys. Current one is neutered. The new one will be neutered a little closer to a year old. Any advice on helping them bond when they meet? I plan on setting up a cat camp and doing the two week process of slowly introducing them. But I really wanna make sure they have a positive bond.

There is also the added expense of a second cat. I rescued my cat from an abusive environment and got her spaded and shots. My cat had kittens in her first year of life, and there was one kitten left, and I am sorry I didn't adopt him too. I have had this cat since 2012, so I don't think I will change the norm.

I know what you're saying. I'm going to be 67 next month, and though I would love to have a second cat, I worry about the extra expense and work. I live in a small apartment, so don't have the extra room to keep them separated during the introduction phase, and not sure where I would put a second litter box and set of food/water bowls. The shelter told me when I adopted Luna that she would be best as an only cat. But she's very attached to me, always wants to be close and know what I'm doing and wanting attention. I wonder sometimes whether she would benefit from a friend, or if she's happy just being the two of us. She's 8 now, I adopted her 3 years ago, so I don't know if she would adapt to having another cat in the house at this age. I know animals can get set in their ways as the get older, just like we do. I see so many homeless animals, and I want to adopt them all!!

I have a seventeen year old cat that I’ve been taking for leashed walks lately. Up until last year there was a dog in our home. They mostly ignored each other but showed signs that they were jealous when it I paid attention to the other. He’s fine with dogs visiting and when he meets them outdoors but I’m also sure he’s enjoying being the only pet. He’s very affectionate, likes to be petted and carried around and can be very insistent, howling when he thinks he’s not getting enough attention and trying to move my hand to his cheek or forehead. In fact, he acts a bit entitled these days which is OK because it’s just the two of us and I’m home most of the time. But when we’re on our walks he keeps wanting to approach other cats. He may be trying to make friends but I’m not sure. The other problem is that when the inevitable happens and he’s no longer with me I want a break from pet ownership so I can travel for a year. I have the space. Two cats could each have their own room. So I will be talking to the organisation that I adopted the dog from to see if there’s a cat around his age in need of fostering and we’ll see.

I adopted Mokie and Maui together as they had been housed at the vet’s together. They had 10 good years together, then we lost Mokie to cancer. Maui is a very sweet boy, but I don’t know if it would help him or not. We live in a 2-bedroom 1100 ft. condo. I am older and infirm due to my car getting T-boned by a bus several years ago. She didn't do well with the clingy cat who was her age (who sadly died during a routine dental surgery). But she gets along just fine with my independent elderly cat. They don't interact a lot but she'll sleep near the elderly cat and groom her occasionally. It makes me think she'd do well with an equally independent cat. Fostering is a way for me to find a good match or at least keep her used to being around other cats.
