Since my 9 month old kitten entered my home at 4 months, I have softly meowed ending in a high note followed by saying her name. She has come to respond by looking at me and happily meowing back. She is a rescue and went to a shelter very young then fostered and returned to shelter. She doesn't respond to loudness. Probably due to her life prior to entering my home. I am older, live alone and am home almost all the time due to my disabilities so my kitty is use to a quiet consistent environment. 🐈🐈🐈

My current kitty, Mrs. Jett, is about 19, as I adopted her when she was at least 15. Like you, I live with a disability made worse by a recent assault by a neighbor who knew that I had my back broken by a drunk driver. So needless to say Mrs. Jett is getting the attention she wants, which means trying to sleep on me 24/7 and will curse rudely at me for taking the lap away when I have to get up...@@ivyrivello4563

I find that a claw pulling my nostril at silly-o-clock in the morning is a sign my big lad needs something. Slow blinking and respecting his space is really the best way to communicate with my lad though. Body language is more important than vocalisations but a hiss is far better than screaming at or (worse) hitting them. My lad often gets too hard when he’s playing and overstimulated but that’s my fault, I can’t blame him.

My cats and I talk to each other all the time. I truly believe they understand some English! If they are scared (i.e. loud sounds etc.), I say "It's ok" or "You're OK" and if I'm calm, they calm down pretty quickly. If they want something (i.e. food or attention), I tell them "You have to wait." They know that means I'll get to them in a minute. I'm busy right now. If I take too long, they will sit near me and stare for as long as it takes me to take care of them. I tell them "I love you." a lot!. They'll usually slow blink or bump me. Their 2 favorite words are "dinner" and "snack". If I say either of those words, their ears perk up and they "meow" at me. Also, I have a senior cat that if she wanders out in the house in the middle of the night, she'll vocalize if she is unsure where she is. I call her name so she can follow my voice back to the bedroom. She'll jump on the bed and snuggle and we all go back to sleep. Both cats will also touch my arm gently if they want to be petted more or if they want me to turn off the TV and go to bed. And if I don't want to go to bed, I'll tell them "After the movie is over. You have to wait. I'll get you a snack after the movie is over." They know the drill. lol! They understand a whole lot more than people give them credit for. It's really them training me, not the other way around.

I've got one that likes to meow very loudly, she's a little old lady now, 18. I'm not sure how well she hears. One of the things she wants is the Temptations Chicken Flavor Treats. She devours them as easy as she breathes, then goes and tries tp steal them from the other cat. Not wise he's five pounds heavier. She also freaks out when I pull her water bowl out to clean it.@@rdavis7350

As a first-time cat custodian, I have learned (slowly) it's really about reading the body language and always speaking in a soft voice.

At the begining it was so weird and alien, and now I'm starting to connect to her inner world more. I was really happy when I realized that behind all the layers of agressivenes and weird habits she does like me in her own way, and wants me there like I do.

I was in the same boat until I started befriending ferals. One in particular taught me everything I know.....mostly because when she decided to voluntarily walk into my apartment, I was a little nervous. The bond we ended up having was unlike any other bond I ever had with a dog. Cats love very hard....slow movements, very little direct eye contact (slow blinking is better when looking directly at your cat....) calm speaking, and knowing their body language are of the utmost importance. The reason I have 2 cats now is because a cat understood me as I ended up understanding her. Also....that bond never stops growing. Cats are incredible animals.

My two communicate a lot with me with very slow blinking. I slow blink at them to show love and friendliness and they really do respond ❤

Thank you for this information. I reluctantly adopted a starving feral cat that crawled up to my porch and said feed me or bury me. She was mean with lots of bites and scratches for the first two weeks. Had to wear gloves to pick her up and take to the vet. I built a warm house on the porch with electric heat to get her thru winter as she would not come inside. That was two years ago. Today Bitey is a happy healthy outdoor cat that takes long walks with me at my ankles without a leash. She’ll sit on my lap for her deep tissue massages and ear scratches. I love my cat. Don’t tell my friends.

My two cats and I have little phrases that let them know when something in the environment is about to change. Before a loud noise (vacuum, blow dryer) I’ll say “big noise” and when it’s over I’ll tell them “big noise all done.” If visitors they’re not familiar with are going to come inside the house ( like service techs, furniture delivery, plumbers, etc.) I’ll tell them “stranger” and when the visitors leave I’ll tell them “stranger all done.” One of my boys tends to be very fearful of new people and would hide for hours to make sure they were REALLY gone. By giving him warnings he wasn’t surprised to see a random person walking in and he knows when the house is “safe” so he’ll come out of hiding. It’s always interesting to see how his body language flips to being alert and cautious when I give a warning. Compared to the panic and fear when things just happen. Now he is far less anxious about guests and has even started to supervise visitors from a safe distance. I’ve always tried to watch their body language and respond in ways that show that I understand what they’re signaling. In return they’re far more trusting and affectionate.

Ooo I like that! I’ve never had a cat that was afraid of loud noises after the first few repititions. Though one of my cats used to be pretty shy around strangers. Both my male cats I’ve had over the years have been very friendly. The one I have now will greet people at the door if he likes you or walk around near you and sniff and supervise you if you’re a stranger at our house. It’s really cute seeing who he gravitates towards and who he just watchesches.

@@madelinegarber7860 true. My boys aren’t usually spooked by the same noises after a couple times. It’s just a handy phrase in case we need it. The fire alarm is the one exception though Haha and your little boy sounds wonderful. My oldest also knows that “come look” means there is something creepy and crawly for him to hunt. Most of their communication to me comes from eye contact (look at how famished I am. Feed me.), pointing (pawing the cabinet with the treats), or loud meowing in specific location (play, bubbles, or snuggles.) we have full conversations without a single word. As others have said, they’ve trained me well 🤣

Lol yeah they have. And yeah I get it. I might implement those phrases with my next cat. The one I told you about is technically my family’s cat. I just moved on my own so I’m gonna get another one in the next couple months. I’m blind so I have to pay close attention to physical signs of affection or annoyance or fear or what auditory signs mean. So things like knowing if a cat’s slow blinking or really tense or hard for me. That’s why it’s actually really important for me to have a really friendly outgoing cat that can tolerate being touched a fair amount. That doesn’t mean I can’t or won’t give it space, but a cat that always hides or tries to bolt won’t work for me. That’s why I love my familt cat. He never bolts and as long as I don’t overdo it he’s ok with being touched.

@@madelinegarber7860that makes a lot of sense. My grandmother is blind and my youngest cat has always been closest to her. He recognizes how she interacts with the world a bit differently than everyone else and has different interactions with her because of it. Like he announces himself when he comes to see her. He makes sure to move aside if she’s walking towards him (the sighted folks in the house just have to step over him if he’s in our way) and he will tap her if he wants snuggles/pets. It’s insane how emotionally intelligent cats are without having to be taught.

Oh facts. Though my cat will sttill get in my way. I feel like he knows he just doesn’t care. He’s actually quite smart for a cat. It’s a little scary actually. But it really is crazy how emotionally intelligent cats are. Not in the same way as dogs, but still.

My cats are very talkative. They make me do exactly what they want at a given moment.

My orange tabby boy is very affectionate. He seems to understand what I am talking about for the most of the times. The only difficulty that I am facing is asking him to wait when it is not meal time yet. 😅 He keeps tapping me, scratching, meowing and doing everything to draw my attention for hours!

Too bad that he waits for hours. Our cat likes many small meals. I leave some dry kibble out so she can snack between meals. I wouldn’t let a baby or toddler feel hungry for hours. By the way, our cat is not overweight even though I leave dry food , between her wet food feedings .

Sometimes , like us they eat out of boredom…consequently they may need more stimulation. They also need to be played with ( exercised ) and/ or watch birds and squirrels out of the window. A Window perch or KZread video for cats can also do the trick. My cat stares at our iPad when she wants to watch a video of other critters or a cartoon.

My cats and i really were interested in what you said in this video. When you made cat sounds, their ears were alert and the would walk around me and clearly wanted me to know they were taking what you said to heart. Thank you for this video. All of us enjoyed it.

Huge sigh of trust between two mid-tier predatory animals. Would you walk up to a lion and close your eyes? Not me unless it was behind a lot of Perspex or a fence. And even then I’d be wary. Stop looking for a moment and you’re dinner!

It’s easy to miss, but cats are very expressive. They meow when they’re hungry, trill when trying to direct your attention, and they honk and finally hiss when they don’t like something. Only the blinking and love-squints are unintuitive.

It's usually not hard to understand a cat's communications.. All the points well mentioned in this video are "cat com 101".. They pretty much let you know what they like or dislike.. Cats are generally very communicatitve.. (though some more so than others).. They each, (like humans), have their own personality.. for sure... Cats love do love routine or consistancy.. (but not boredom)..

I have two orange tabby cats that are brothers. Jaxon is my mischievous boy who has lots of energy and communicates to me by whining. His food loving brother Duke is very vocal. He meows softly and excitedly when its meal time. He is very chill compared to his brother. I have structured their meal times and when 4:30 pm hits, they know it is time to eat their wet food. They run side by side to their feeding area. So adorable to watch.

My cat was more vocal as a kitten. He’s seven years old now and doesn’t meow a lot. He communicates more with his eyes or with his body. Sometimes when I’m working at my desk, he’ll tap my arm and meow once for attention. I’ve always talked to him like I would talk with any family member or roommate and he responds with action. If he wants to go outside, he will go to his cupboard, pull out the harness and bring it to me. If he wants to be fed, he’ll lead me to the food dish. He has only hissed at me two times: once when I tried picking him up while ending our harness walk outside and once when I frightened him with a raised voice. He hissed at the vet once or twice, but he never tries to scratch or bite out of fear or anger. I noticed that his behavior changes as he ages, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes vocal again. I’ve been very fortunate with this guy.

I’ve had Siamese and they are very vocal. You can meow back at them and they’ll continue the conversation! One that is noticeable are when cats are calling for each other. They’ll do the same for their human companions, too, particularly after everyone has left the house. I caught my cat doing this; he thought everyone had left. Upon hearing him, I called him and he came running and then greeted me with a trill.

I find communicating with my cats are much easier than some of the people I know. Just kidding! ;)

Excellent video... I found my 10-year-old cat Kelle in a Pet store seven years ago and at that time nobody wanted to give a loving home, they took her son instead. Now at 17 she is still an explosive energetic fireball which walks on her hind legs, jumps with no problems and extremely healthy with no ailments. She has a very high intelligence for a senior cat.

I’ll never forget walking down some exterior stairs from my second story apartment and hearing what sounded like a child play-yelling/play-screaming. Sound kept getting louder and when I got to the bottom of the stairs, it was this stray black cat that I sometimes feed tuna. It was making this WoWoWoWoWoW sound and it sounded just like a person.

It's also important to recognize that all cats are different. . .and its our job to know our cats best. Both my boys have a few odd quirks. One of them almost never has an upright tail, he wanders around with it down. But he is atually comfortable and feels secure in his space. He will occasionally raise it when he thinks he's getting food/attention that he wants. But his 'neutral' position is down. He also weirdly spits when he gets super excited and hyper. Our other lad also puffs his tail when he gets super excited. He'll be running around the house, zoom around the corner with his tail puffed, or when he's batting around at springs. He's very physically expressive, our other lad is very vocally expressive. It's fascinating because every cat is different and they ALL try to communicate with us in their own fashion.

Funny enough, one of my cats talks to me but doesn't open his mouth to meow. Result: he just humms and mumbles 😄 And if one of them comes up to me and licks his lips, you'd think he wants food! But nope, that means the litter box is dirty. The other will constantly jump on my lap until I get up to refill the food bowl. Lastly, one of them has a very "I am offended!"-sounding meow, it means: "Pick me up, but don't do it by picking me up! In fact, if you get close I will run away! Why are you not picking me up?!"

Whiskers say a lot….when the whiskers are back, they are mad. The more forward the whiskers are..the bigger the SMILE. 😁😁

Me and Hammy chat all the time. I'll tell him something or ask him a question and he'll meow back! Also if I make purring noises he'll start purring back

I always talk to cats. My first cat communication experiences were with Siamese cats. What I find interesting is that the same communication is very well understood by other breeds of cats. I can talk to the domestic shorthair cats that I work with, and my own current domestic shorthair cat just as well. I have even successfully talked to cats in other countries. Cat language must be very universal!

What works for me with cats is a low, calm, monotone voice......they love it.

Well at least I know now that when I "meow" or "trill" back to my babies im not THAT weird 😂❤

A cat will give you unconditional love, once you earn it.

I'm about to adopt kittens!!! Grew up with kitties, had kitties on a farm later on, but this is the 1st time I've adopted them myself. So happy to have found this channel!!! ❤

Thank you for the informative cat info. I subscribed. My cat adopted me by glomming on to me at the shelter. She always wants to be with me. If a door is closed between us she will try the door knob or throw herself against the door. She has NEVER hissed. She is very laid back and if I am bad, meaning I sometimes sleep kind of late. She will either go back to sleep next to me or gently put a paw on my chest and put her face on mine and I sense that she is there and feel that tiny sweet breath. She understands everything I say. Like "up" will sit on my lap. A firm "No", will stop her if she starts to scratch on something other than all of her scratching areas. If I show her a brush she will jump up on me and first put her head back to expose her throat as that is her favorite place to be touched or brushed and then I do the rest of her. I can play with her tail and she doesn't care. Part of her exercise is chasing me like I am her prey and grabbing my ankles. We play like this for a while. The only thing she hates is when I am on my computer and if touching e doesn't work she will jump on the back of the computer and stick her head over the screen. So cute, I shut off the computer and if I can't at the moment she will sit where I can very obviously see her and give me a little time. She also has two Sugar Glider sisters that she loves. They all get along. I am very lucky that she adopted me. (I also for twenty years had rescued and adopted four new world monkeys) Just an aside.n Oh, I had been allergic to cats for a number of years, and when I decided it was time for a cat to be in my life the allergy would not be a problem. It stopped when I got her. (Altho allergic to friends' cats.). I can bury my face deep in her soft almost perfumed smell and no untoward reactiI wilon. Sorry if I blabbed on too much. I will continue following you. Oops, I am getting the get off the computer or else look!

My cat and I communicate pretty well. He knows the word "treats" for sure!! Others are "dinnertime", "chow chow", "outside" etc. They learn the words over time. One thing I find that cats are not good at is delaying their gratification. If my Nehemiah wants a treat, he wants it right now, not later. I will say "just a second" and that is about as much time I will get before he's back asking for his treat. Patience is not a virtue when it comes to a treat.

I actually speak to her. Whether yelling her "I love you," "I missed you," or exclamations like "do you want this toy?" I believe they understand the tone of our voice

Being consistent I found is best way to communicate with them. Always same sound and body language works best.

I love cats too

My Ralphie chirps at me. It's the most adorable thing ever. Norton bunts me. Max rubs his face on mine - aggressively.

We talk to our cats a lot. Each one has their own song that my wife sings to signal it's time for their meals. Bordermoon, the youngest one, uses the Fluent Pet buttons. Doily Doily Doily seems psychic, so I can usually "hear" what she's saying. Ozlyn & Mylo-Ren are super old, but still come to their names & communicate when they want extra love.

My cat = hunter. She caught a big lizard yesterday. Lizard then escaped behind little drawer cabinet. So then my cat starts looking at me, meowing...in a way which - if she were a human - would be like pointing at the gap between the wall and the cabinet and shouting "hey, the lizard is right there, help me catch it again!". Of course, the lizards are useful against mosquitos so I didnt actually help her catch it. But even later, in the evening, my cat still remembered the exact spot where the lizard had been ( probably ran off somewhere). But this just shows how good the cat's memory and situational comprehension is.

My cat thanks me everytime i let him back in the house and always listens to commands hes a good tabby,i talk to him with eye contact its crazy how responsive he can be and his full black tabby cousin shes more stubborn but still listens with 'leave it' commands and recall .both lovely felines.never thought id so connected.will also try these techniques.

This was very helpful. My cat is sitting next to me and the trill was the sound that captured her attention/ curiosity.

The slow blink

So I have had cats for 35 years. What you said is pretty much spot on.

I give my fella (Tuna) nose boops or kiss Kim on the top of the head. But when he’s sitting on my lap he’ll be upright, paws me gently and pulls me in for more nose boops and head kisses. Unusual? Absolutely. But he’s a real gentle fella. He’s my dude. My guy. My sidekick and faithful companion. I’m so glad I adopted him last year. He changed my life immensely.

I do all of these things! I have 2 adult males (indoor) and they both have different vocal sounds they use but body language is a big key too. I was able to detect a behavior change in my older cat. Got him to a vet quick and found out he had went blind due to high blood pressure. I always pay attention to irregular routines, behaviors and vocalizations. It's helped me to be able to care for them better. ❤

A couple more: The slow blink is another type of communication you can use to make cats feel more content. When working with the SPCA, I've calmed many stray cats down with this simple, soothing act. Also, watch the whiskers. Forward facing whiskers means that the cat is curious. So be aware if the cat is looking at your glass of water with forward whiskers. He/she may start pawing at it and may knock it over. LOL.

My cat will wait for me to wake up before jumping on to my bed for hugs, and he will chat like he's telling me about his night out 😂 love him for that, always had cat's ❤

I understand fully when my kitty has told me I am her butler and to listen to her and I surrender for her love 😍

My cat tjirps a lot in the evening. I know she usually wants to play. But other times i am clueless what she means with it or wants. Poor thing, sometimes i wish there were subtitles 😅

I surprised that you didn't mention the slow blink. It's always a friendly sign. I've used it on cats I'd never met, cats that were clearly alert for trouble, and watched them visibly relax. Cats seem to like being talked to, and understand far more than we think. In at least one case I've had a cat try to talk back. He used to go to the door and meow, obviously wanting out. I'd say, "Out?" and open the door. After a while he actually used a sound I'd never heard from a cat, a short sort of bark that sounded very much like "Ow!?" I once told a visiting friend about this and he laughed and said I was nuts. The cat walked to the door and I told my friend, "Watch this" and asked "Out?". The cat said "meow" -- and never said "Ow!?" again.

I talk to my cats several times a day, and I can tell they love it. I put my nose on theirs in the form of "hello" "good morning" they love it. I play with doing the "cat" position found in pilates...all the time it's interaction with them. I have lots of tips lol. They are very happy and never get sick!

We rescued a kitten 8 weeks old in 2020 and he’s pretty friendly, and communicates well. Then we adopted a 12 month old kitten that had been found in a store parking lot. The folks that got her didn’t take much care of her and she had competition from a much older cat and puppy. So I got her for a buddy to our first cat. She’s not very socialized but will tell me when she’s hungry or wants to play. She does not like being picked up and it’s even difficult for her to let us pet her. She normally keeps to herself and seems like she want to be closer to is, but is frightened. I try to play with her, and she will but stops after awhile. I don’t know how to cure her fears and help her get more involved with us because I think she wants to, but is scared.

I've delt with a few Farrel cats. Right now, I have a 7-month-old cat that is half farrel. It eats from my hand and rolls over to show me it's belly and purrs. Takes time! All up to the cat. Last one I made friends with she gave birth to her kittens in our house. We got them all fixed and are the killers of the mice in our yard now. The mother grooms me daily and sleeps with us in bed.

Both of mine will sit on the foot of the bed, like small children, and watch cartoons.

Very nice video. I confess, I watched because my cat, Flynn, 18 years old now was sitting on my lap, and of course, I do love cats You are very good when working with young cats. Be well.

We adopted 2 cats last August. At the time they were a year and 2 months, and a 3 month old. The younger one hid for days when we brought him home. He was really scared. He will let us pet him when he is relaxed or with the older cat. He hardly vocalises. He won't let you pick him up unless he gives up and surrenders. He will be near us but keeps his distance. I hope that he will grow out of this and trusts us. He's very slow in coming around.

I talk to my kitty. When I say her name, sometimes she'll respond with that voice up trill; it's cute. When she's playing, I've also noticed vocalizations that in tone sound like a human's "Oh" or "Tsk." She mews if she wants/needs something.

If you can understand a cat, you can understand most people. Pets can not talk so it takes much more effort to relate to them, but you know they are honest. People, I can not say as much about. I love and understand my cat more than any person I have ever met.

I HAVE a question - - HOW do I undo a mistake I made a while back? I misunderstood something a cat was doing in my last place, where she would stretch out and aggressively scratch the carpet, like she would the scratch post. I was thinking that she was playing, so I 'scratched' my feet on the carpet whenever she did. My roommate said later, she was showing signs of aggression, because maybe she was afraid of me, and my 'reply' was aggression in return (I didn't know this at the time). NOW she doesn't want anything to do with me at all. I like her, and just want to let her know that, but don't know how. she has calmed down a little over time, but still is more aggressive towards me than everyone else in the house (I can't pet her anymore) ... .... just curious if there is anything I can do to 'undo' what I unknowingly did, or even if it's possible. thank you.

(sorry for the novel) my neighbor had a cat that i used to call Stubbs. I swear he understood what I was saying. When I'd get home from work he'd be in the tree, in my backyard and I'd say, "Hey Stubbs, what's going on, man?!" and he'd jump out of the tree, jog half way and reply "Meow!" and come over for some quick cuddles and hang out time before he'd be off. One day he was on the fence of our other shared neighbor who had a dog and the dog was going crazy, trying to get to him. Stubbs was stressed, but the dog owners weren't doing anything to stop their mutt from trying to get to my buddy. So I walked to where Stubbs was at and I slowly (so he knew I was going to grab him) put out my hands and put him on my side of the fence. My neigbours looked at me like I had just disarmed a bomb or something.

When Elliott does something sweet I say "thank you", then he rubs his head against me❤

My boy harry “mrps” the trill, so much we call him dilophasaurus, that dinosaur from Jurassic park that took out the dude stealing the embryos, other boy atlas just won’t stop talking, he is awesome; I love conversing with my two cats

My findings as the owner of 4 cats in the past. Use their names and look them in the eye when you say their name. They will learn to come when you call them by name. Use repetitive language. My last two cats knew many words as well as the difference between the words like "upstairs" and "downstairs" because I always used those words if I was going up or downstairs..."OK, girls, I'm going upstairs." Ask them how they are, tell them when things are "ok", like if they knock something off a countertop like they always do. One of my cats was a real bunter; I would say "bunt" and put my head down and she would walk her head right into mine, really crack right into me, very hard on the noggin. She loved it. lol People need to understand that cats can be very social if given the opportunity with good observation, as you say, be an observer of your cat.

Hi, the cat I have was wild, thought I was pissing against the wind for awhile, but now we got a connection. Gives me a high five now, still working on more tricks. They're smart, just got to get the timing right.

I sing to my cats…made up tunes and lyrics that don’t rhyme . They seem to love it. Once one of them got stuck high up in a tree, and singing to him might have helped him relax enough to get rescued by an arborist.😄

We have 2 cats, very different. One is vocal, she’ll tell me she wants to eat. The other won’t make a sound, but sits & stares at me, when I look, she licks her lips, then leads me to the kitchen. (She will also grab my elbow when I’m not paying attention.) The younger one we’ve had since 6 weeks old, she’ll stand sideways in front of me when she wants to be picked up. Then she’ll rub her head on my chin, often licking it. And I rub my chin on the parts of her head she turns to me. (Like I’m mama cat, which to her, I am. 😻) The older one claims my husband, the younger one has claimed me. They choose! Lol Thanks for an informative channel. 😸

I have found that if i need to apologise to my cat, for accidentally stepping on their tail or tripping over them, i crouch down and say 'I'm so sorry ' but it needs to be a genuine apology! I think the crouching down and bringing yourself to their level really brings down the perceived threat and they respond by immediate forgiveness. Never underestimate the power of the simple crouching down movement, I've found it works wonders. Us two-leggers can be quite intimidating, so making yourself smaller cam really help

My cat and I talk every day. We respond to each other's sounds and we slow blink at each other while watching tv together. 🥰

"Each cat is different." Each cat is a unique individual with a distinct personality. Each cat is a PERSON. I have been working with my cat closely for 14 years. Every time I do something I explain what I am doing to him, in a sing-songie simplified pastiche of pidgin English & vulgar Latin. After only two weeksI I was able to replace treats with praise & strokes . Within years I had trained him & his friend (RIP) to respond to over 15 commands, words, & phrases. By now, my surviving boy understands complete sentences in plain English. I do not have to use modulated baby talk anymore. Cats can possess the intellect of a human three-year-old. They can learn to understand human speech. Absolute consistency & constant repetition are required in training.
