My uncle had a raccoon. He basically made his whole basement (about 750 sq feet) into a raccoon adventure center. He put shelves and ramps and steps all over for him to climb around on. My uncle would hide little snacks all over the basement and he would come home to a very chill raccoon every day because he spent his whole day searching and playing.

i feel like this is probably the most realistic review ive seen for racoons. some people get carried away on how hard it is but taking care of a dog isnt as easy as putting it on a chain in your yard either, even though some people think so. every animal takes responsibility.

They follow you everywhere, and they will bite hard and have mood swings, best pet ever. Mine got a clothes pin caught on his finger, hollering running around the house. Good times, they yell "ma-ma" no shit

Raccoons are very cute and intelligent but are a handful and very, very destructive. I have raised a few orphans and never allow them in the house. I leave their food and water in the garage with door open a few inches on the bottom for them to come in and out as they please, they have a wood box 18"x24" with a small opening attached to the wall in the corner ceiling with a 2x4 ladder to climb up if they need to come in and rest, that way they can come and eat or socialize without them being totally dependent on me.

We used to have a family of Raccoons that lived under our house when I was a kid. They would come out at night and eat our dog food, they would wash it off first. But they were so cute. If occasionally extremely loud. They would randomly get up on our roof and screech bloody murder up there. They really were fun to watch tho.

For 20+ years, I fostered multiple raccoons brought home from a wildlife sanctuary that was past the limits. These were not supposed to be pets, but they were unable to be released into the wild. We had a 50 foot by 9 foot x 16 foot high outdoor pen that had a link top. It attached to a dog door to enter the house, so the raccoons Rocky, Blackie, and Gray, the three infants, could enter or exit as they pleased. After they grew to maturity, they were so spoiled that we basically had to force them to go outside other than to make #1 or #2. All they wanted to do was get on the couch under a blanket and be massaged and petted. However, one night, there was a prowler in our yard, and he tried to enter the gate into the pen. Rocky, Blackie, and Gray were outside like they had rockets attached to them, and they protected our house better than any watchdog. I think they would have eviscerated the prowler had he actually broken the lock and opened the gate. We found that they would eat twice the amount of hi-protein dog food than a dog their weight. They all three had a bad sweet tooth and loved butter cookies and vanilla ice cream. Rocky died of cancer with a lot of tumors. It was really sad. Blackie and Gray both lived past 15. Gray had kidney failure, and Blackie died in her sleep on a July 4th. Since then, we have not celebrated that day.

thank you for encouraging education about these animals before making them pets. Many people take on wild animals thinking they can just train one like a puppy rather than learning how to care for them properly. Heck, most people don't research how to take care of puppies properly before getting one.

I'll have to wait, until I can get adequate accommodations for one first. I befriended a wild raccoon 2 months ago. I've never loved an animal so much in my entire life. He is my best friend. He comes back every single night, and brought a friend with him. They both set in my lap, and eat like there is no tomorrow. Despite all the rumors. They are completely healthy, and so loving. They are my outdoor pet's forever. Thanks very much for a BRILLIANT video. You answered everything I needed to know. You ROCK 👊😎

Do they have any stench? I once had a ferret and didnt get the gland removed and dude always stank. He was the funniest pet I've ever owned aside from my cat Link I have now. Hes a talker (not literally, but he is very vocal in responses and communicating things), but anyways a raccoon has always interested me, As well as a lynx.

i've been a lifelong raccoon lover, and i'm seriously considering making the big jump within the next few years. i live in south florida currently, but i'm moving to central florida soon. we have a permit here that's free to get and covers many exotic animals. from what i've seen in my research so far and through listening to other handlers (like yourself) as long as you are near an exotic vet to keep up with their shots and get them spayed/neutered (and not just randomly grabbing one from the wild of course yikes please go to a breeder or exotic pet store) having one can be similar to owning a dog or a cat with an added amount of judgement from other people lmao. their grabby hands i can see becoming agitating for less patient owners, but i've owned ferrets and rats (ferrets especially will get into everything) and i'm used to it as well as animals who play rough. for example, i have a cat right now who does exactly what you were talking about with chargers and wires. i've just sort of learned to not leave them out or keep him out of my room entirely. either that or keep a very close eye on him when he's near chargers. i've lived with dogs, cats, rats, ferrets, guinea pigs, and birds throughout my life. but of course it's impossible not to be nervous when considering a big life change like this.

Yeah, I started seriously looking into having a pet raccoon when I was still in high school and it didn't take much research for me to decide this going to be a rather long term dream for me. I can certainly own one where I live but I will need to have the time and money to build a secure inclosure and also I will need to make sure I have a decent "medical fund" tucked away for that as well. But some day I do still hope to have a little bandit of my own to have and hopefully hold.

good education video i came here just to see how ppl see having one there are even some that are against it (i have seen ppl who are 100% against it), but the issue is that they don't know that they have been breed by humans for generations its not same as when u took one baby from the wild & they not be turned back to wild cause they won't survive (but i think some don't get it even when u explain cause they just want to blame ppl for ruining wild animals), most exotic pets are not as easy like cats & dogs so educational videos like this are necessary

You need to really emphasize they spaying/neutering. I know 2 people that have had pet racoons and both of them eventually wound up just building an enclosure for them because they went from super cute and nice to just vicious and just unmanageable as anything anyone would think of as a pet.

We had one when I was young. Cat on steroids. Great pet. Martha. We re-introduced her to the wild gradually with a cage we had in the back yard. Other coons came around & she was free to come and go. Eventually she just left with them to the woods behind our house.

My grandparents live in Easley, South Carolina. They out all their leftover food in the back yard. Our last time visiting, there were 3 raccoons, a skunk, possum, and a wild cat all in a 10 foot area just chowing down. It was very good late night entertainment 😂😂

My raccoon, Bandit, was the greatest pet I ever had, but they do take a lot of work. When people ask me what its like, I tell them that its like having a hyper 2 year old who never grows up, lol. They are very smart and can open anything with their hands, and like a 2 year old, the minute they notice you aren't paying attention, they will run straight for what they know they are not supposed to have or do what they know they aren't allowed to do, lol. You REALLY need to baby proof your entire house, but you love them. You cant help but love them even though they will drive you crazy at times, lol. The biggest issue I had was trying to litter train mine. Did you manage to do it? Do you have any videos on how? Mine knew he wasn't supposed to go in the house, but he just refused to use the litter box so instead he would go under the bed or under the furniture and try to hide the " deed" haha. Thank you for these videos, they remind me of a lot of very fond memories.

I had a pet raccoon back in the early 1980's. Back then my state (CT) allowed them with a permit but no longer do. I purchased it from a place called Davidson Fur Farm out in MN and they still exist (I just googled it to make sure). I had him for a few years and it requires work but is well worth the effort and was so enjoyable. We had a huge walk in cage in the yard with a tree, pool and house for him although he was in our house just as much as the cage

When you let him out in the yard at home do you have him on a leash if you don't how do you keep him from running off? Can you please show his pen? I live in SC also and this state really has some of the best laws regarding having exotic pets.

lidsman22 hey so when I let him out into the backyard he is not on a leash. He doesn't run off, but if he goes to close to the edge of the yard I'll call him back. If I take him somewhere in public or on walks I'll put him on a leash. I'm going to do a video on my cage but that will be a later video. I'm in the process of building a new one. But yeah sc is great :D

Raccoons, like otters, ferrets and others, have very specific needs. You must know what you're doing. Many adopt one thinking it's like a dog or a cat... And nothing further from reality. They are very demanding.

I had a friend who had a pet raccoon. Imagine a 3 year old with full dexterity/motor control. He had motion activated faucets, magnetized locks on every cabinet and drawer, and one if the most comprehensive first aid kits you've ever seen in a personal home. They play far too rough to have with small children, and like he said, they require A LOT of mental/physical stimulation. It is SOOO much more work than a dog.

From an ex-owner of a racoon, I would advise against it. They are cat-like in some ways but a cat will step around items on a shelf.....a raccoon will plow through them. I had string wallpaper that he climbed and shredded to bits. Screens? ...what screens. lol. My daughter had taken off her engagement ring and set by the sink....oops...down the drain it went. Had to call a plumber. Food must be on constant lock down unless you want it strewn in every room in your house. He got his rabies vaccine from vet but had a heck of a time getting him back in the carrier. The vet was ready to shoo him into a room and gas him so we could catch him. Keep all bathroom doors closed or...you guessed it....they'll play in the toilet. Loved him but he was a pain in the neck!
