I have an Advantage plan because it does what insurance is supposed to do. I pay a smaller amount each month to protect me from a gigantic one-time expense. Here's my personal example. I pay $107/month for my advantage plan. That's a sunk cost of about $1300 annually. Lost unless I have a catastrophic expense. Well, I was in the hospital for 6 days just 2 years ago and the bill was close to $50,000. My out of pocket was about $1,000 plus my Medicare premiums. That's what insurance is all about.

I had a Medicare advantage plan and still do or I had an aortic valve replacement and repair to my aorta. The total cost to me was probably no more than $2000 and the bills from the hospital were excess of 500,000 including the surgeons, my premium is zero.

The money I spend for my medigap plan premium a year would just be a drop in the bucket to what the out of pocket costs would be if a serious issue occurs with an advantage plan. It would take a number of years saving my premiums to even make a dent to a serious issue to cover what an advantage doesn't.

Hi there - Since Medicare Advantage plans must cover the same as a Original Medicare, there isn't much difference in what the coverage is. Some areas have lower out of pockets than others - we are happy you enjoy your Medigap plan!

Hello, I had a pleasant surprise when as a Medicare Advantage member, via Kaiser, I submitted an emergency medical bill from SE Asia, and Kaiser paid, even though we all hear "Medicare does not cover outside the US." Evidently they followed regular Kaiser guidelines for coverage to insureds, not Medicare's. Great for me. How can I get more information on this. Specifically I'd like to know, does Kaiser do this for all states? Or does it vary by what factors? What other insurer's would do this for their insured's. Is there a hard and fast rule or ? I know this is a very defined question but I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance and best wishes.

I am on an advantage plan that has a monthly part B give back of $150, and an awesome $!50 quarterly for healthy groceries. It's a Chronic care plan, and have had a great year with it. Unfortunately, they are not covering Texas anymore for 2024. So now I will be enrolling into another plan with the Chronic care for this coming year.

it's my understanding that with a Medicare advantage plan or just original Medicare vs a medigap plan that you could be paying a lot of hi out of pocket expenses if you were to get certain cancers/cancer.. ?

My wife has been very pleased with her employer-sponsored MA plan for retirees. It has good coverage; low deductible; low annual OOP Max ($3,000); and covered in and out-of-network facilities. But unfortunately, Mayor Hospital (where she had a kidney transfer) will no longer accept MA plans in 2024. So the plan itself remains good, but unfortunately some hospitals like Mayo are not going forward with them in 2024.

More expensive Advantage plans alleviate most of the drawbacks. 92% of doctors in my state belong to the plan. I pay $167 and it virtually the same as my large employer group coverage, except better actually. The higher premium is affordable for me and gives me tremendous piece of mind. (I could easily have chosen a cheaper or $0 plan from the same company - you make the choice). The hearing aid benefit and vision benefits alone make it worth it. I get really irritated by those who have an agenda one way or the other on plans. It all depends on your needs, what is offered to you, your entire situation. To those say i am "nuts" for having an Advantage plan - I have gone over my plan details with a fine tooth comb!

$20,000 over 8 years is $2,500 per year which is an average of about $208 per month for a mere $226 deductible (2023) per year. If you can afford it, go with original Medicare and plan G (or plan N for less premiums and some copays). I have no idea where she got that "blood work" done and why it was "denied", it shouldn't have been unless the outfit wasn't covered under Medicare (even so, it was only $400 for a one time cost), but well over 90% of doctors in the US accept Medicare. Plan D's right now can be as low as $0 for 2024.
