Should You Fertilize Sweet Corn?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Christy's dad and mom are in town for a visit. We decided to plant more sweet corn. Christy's dad, Bobby helps with the fertilizer. The fertilizer spreader isn't really meant for a sub-compact tractor like the John Deere 1025R but that doesn't stop us. The Heavy Hitch rear receiver hitch plate allows pull behind attachments intended for small garden tractors to be used on a small utility tractor like the JD 1025R or 2038R.

Instead of further compacting your soil by towing the spreader with the tractor you could probably pull the spreader by hand. Not every operation is best done with a tractor on wet land.

Nothing wrong with compacting the soil between the rows, it keeps weeds down and helps retain moisture.

We had a Farmall Super A, single row tractor, that we used to plow the extensive garden my grandparents planed every year. We would use sweep cultivators to control the weeds all across the row. The tractor had a fertilizer distributor that mounted on the side of the tractor motor and was driven by a chain off the rear axle so it was synced to the ground speed of the tractor. The fertilizer fed through a hose to the back of one of the sweeps, just to the side of the crop. We also used this same system along with a rear mounted planter to put a little fertilizer under the seed when we planted. A center hoe dug a tench in the middle of the row and the fertilizer dropped into it. Then a disc on either side through dirt back into a slight mound. The planter ran on top of this mound, planting the seed. We had a Cole plate type planter. It looked a lot like yours, which the press wheels in the back to close the dirt over the seed.

Tim a few thoughts regarding your spreader. While many suggest a pro broadcast spreader, your pull spreader gets the job done! To get the spreader a bit further away from your tractor, use a drawbar between the 2 lower points on the quick hitch. For your control some pipe, some pipe cement and primer, a coupler and an elbow should do all you need. And then to avoid beating the young corn plants with the gearbox, replace the tires with larger diameter tires, realizing only half of the diameter change is ground clearance. And you get to reminisce about Neighbor Bob every time the pull spreader is brought out!

Totally agree with you. If you want to grow crops, you need fertilizer. My granddad used to put 300 lbs per acre of 5-10-15 under the row when planting corn. Then, at “lay by” last cultivating, he would get another 300-400 lbs per acre of 34% liquid nitrogen as side dressing. Corn doesn’t require much fertilizer though. Cotton and tobacco requires copious amounts of fertilizer, per acre (almost 1ton+), especially in sandy loam soils in the southeast. BTW, you really need a 3 point hitch spreader🤣. Keep up the great work.

My great uncle, Neighbor Bob, always made a contraption to make working with practically anything better or easier! When the shore stations (that lift your boat out of the water, next to the dock) first came out, they were all manual. He made for himself, at the cottage, a 3-piece, 28-30" diameter belt sheave out of wood, with the belt path routed into it, that U-bolted onto the lift wheel, had a 1/2hp 120V motor covered by an up side down Rubbermaid container, and controlled by an x-ray hand switch. Ended up making several of them for several neighbors up there, as well.

Hello, The handle on the spreader is on an off? You can use two colors of 1/4 inch rope, one for on and one for off (the rope should have enough length to allow you to tie them to the ROPS bar from the spreader and allow for tractor turns). Other Items needed: One eye bolt that will allow the rear rope to pass through easily, two fender washers and two nuts, (loctite optional). Drill a hole at the top of the handle to allow the ropes to pass through. Tie one color rope to the front hole and place a couple of knots into the handle hole. Use the other color rope for the rear hole and knots through the handle run this rope through the eye bolt. Determine a good place to mount the eye bolt on the spreader bin nearest the tractor, maybe slightly off center (you preference). Ensure there is enough rope so the handle can be extended in both directions. Sorry this is kinda long, but it should not cost more than 10.00 in parts. I’m sure you get the idea. Love the videos!

Id say drill a hole in each back corner of the sreader bin. And attach a chain or somthing loose to hang to the top corners of your quick hitch so when you comletly raise your 3pt it lifts the spreader 4-6 in onn the ground. At the begining on the row lower your 3pt enough to lower the spreader and make ground contact to spin...... at the end raise it so the wheels are off the ground..........instant on/off without a big expensive or complicated modification. ......also when traviling from storage to useage location your saving wear and tear on the wheels and axle ext that stiil would spin on the ground even when disengaged

I am a firm believer in planting buckwheat with my corn. It fixes some nitrogen, it blocks out a lot of the weeds, it's great for pollinators, it reseeds itself very easily so that after the corn is picked it will grow again and provide food and cover for wildlife along with break down the soil and provide nutrients if tilled in green in the spring. Jo De Groote backwards is little trouble if you know how to back up a trailer. Tim has a couple so he can handle it. You are trying to reinvent a perfectly good wheel in my opinion. All he needs is a solid handle extension to open and close the drop mechanism.

"COME ON MANNN"... Add a couple wraps of duct tape to hold that spreader control "handle" inside the PVC pipe and you'll be good to go...

Time to start adding organic matter to the garden. This should improve your garden soil structure after a few years.

I agree with the mulching. I believe I've seen you haul away some nice soil in some other videos. Hope your using that soil, grass clippings and leaves to create good compost.

I am curious you may have addressed in a previous video. Is the tractors and or equipment on loan or given to you ?

We have subsidized rental arrangement with AHW LLC for the 2038r, 5075e, and Gator. The 1025r is ours. We discuss these issues in detail when we introduce a new piece of equipment.
