    People sometimes forgive what is the important and what isn't. A camera and system need tu fulfill two requirements: - Being a tool that can be used to the purpose you have. A tool that you trust. A tool that doesn't fail. That can endure the conditions you'll face - Being an object that you like and makes you inspired to work, makes you enjoy. Maybe for some non material qualities, maybe by design, ergonomics, output, speed, etc. It's the same even for the most boring tool like a keyboard and mouse, a set of pans, or whatever you use.

    Great video, i'm seriously thinking and like everything about R3 except low res sensor. Do you think 24mpx is fine for architectural work? I remember Iwan Baan worked mostly on 1D series and he's a superstar but there's this mpx war now and I hesitate between R5.

    Only you can answer that. The R3 is amazing and does everything I need it to. You might have different preferences so the R5 might be better. I did hear some rumors about an update coming for the R5. We have so many options now, but I love it!

    Baan has lucious images. Yes, the R3 is absolutely "fine". But if, for instance, an architectural firm wants to put a very large photo of one of their projects in their lobby? They probably give that commission to someone with a medium format camera. You can pick up a Phase One XT for under $60K now, which makes a Hasselblad H6D look cheap at $27K. Most architectural work allows you to set up a tripod and compose your shot meticulously, and not have to crop. My opinion is worth every penny you pay for it, but the R3 is "enough" for most purposes that allow for that.

    I sold my R3 when they were still in short supply, and got almost everything I paid for it. Much cheaper than renting. I loved the R3. I loved nearly everything about it. I've never had a camera that felt as comfortable in my hands, and the interface was superb. So why did I sell it? I shoot mostly stills, and I sell large format prints. And that is driven by customers, not my own preference. The real estate on the R5 just allows me to crop more and still create a viable print. Give me an R3 with 60mp, and it might be the last camera I ever buy - at least for a long time. If I was shooting sports, or catering to small-format platforms like magazine or internet? I couldn't ask for more than the R3. Canon has put out some good cameras "for the money", and they have two more coming that will probably fit that description as well. But none of them merit a switch from the R3 or the R5. I'm looking forward to the R1, but not the price tag. But if it gives me everything the R3 did, with more pixel real estate? I'll pay it. Nice job with the video. You gave people information that would actually be worthwhile in a buying decision, not just regurgitate specs. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the R3 at times.

    Thanks for the detailed reply. Making choices based on your personal or professional needs is the way to go. It's nice we have a lot of options to choose from. I remember the days when we weren't so lucky. I find most decisions are based on a couple features like you mentioned between the R5 and R3. It's a tough choice! I'm totally happy with the R3, but I'll at least take a look at the R1, lol!

    Is it possible to print very good quality 30"x20" prints from the R3?

  • @JeremyWalton

    @JeremyWalton

    I would say yes. I printed a few photos on metal with my GH5 and they turned out great. Haven't printed any with the R3 yet, but I'm not worried. Other people might have different opinions. Plenty of videos on this topic and examples with lower megapixel cameras. I'll def do a video when I print some pics with the R3!

    @@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO I'm sorry I didn't see your coment earlier. The answer is absolutely yes... and no. People who shoot in a studio love to say that there is no need to crop. People who don't sell prints love to say that there is no need to crop. When you shoot in uncontrolled situations, particularly birds, it's just a way of life (if you plan on selling prints). Can you print a good quality 30x20 from a 24mp image? Sure. From a crop that is 1/4 of the original? Always remember that it's not me who decides whether a print is "acceptable" - it's the buyers. You know it's not acceptable quality when they won't pay their hard-earned money for it. I have images that I LOVE that aren't commercial.

    @@JeremyWalton You did a good thing with this video, so I don't want to come across negative. You are absolutely right - a full 24mp image is fine for a 30x20. But suppose you see that there is a beautiful portrait-format image hiding in that original. The biggest 2x3 aspect portrait you can cut out of it is 2,666x4,000. That's about 44% of the original resolution. (That's off the top of my head, but I think it's pretty close.) It's easy for people to say, "You should have shot it portrait to begin with." But for no-talent hacks like me, having more megapixels is a great crutch.

    I do not really see full frame as a big sensor, but more as the best compromise between medium format and APS-C. Before digital cameras arrived, every $20 point and shoot camera was full frame. It is very unfortunate that producing full frame sensors still is so expensive that they became a luxury for the casual shooter. €7,200 for that tiny Sony A1 are just ridiculous. At the same time medium format becomes more and more affordable. My 1D X already is ten years old, but I am not sure if it would sense for me personally to invest money into an R3. I love that the R3 weighs almost nothing and that it has IBIS, but I am still struggling with the idea of not having an optical viewfinder and being restricted to Canon lenses unless I adapt old EF lenses from third parties. As I do not need video at all, I will probably stick with my old camera until it falls apart and invest that money into travelling instead,

    I bought and R3 and waited and waited... I received it about the time the shortages were clearing up. I love this camera. I've owned a 1DX Mark I and II, but they never fit my hand like the 1D Mark V. The R3 is back to the size that feels great in my hand. The lighter weight is also a godsend for me. And it has GPS that is important to me. Really helps me locate photos at times. The biggest downside to the camera is the cost. I had been using an R5 and and R6, but sold both to afford the R3. The Hype machine seemed to go from 100 to zero on this camera. It was all anyone could talk about online and then suddenly it wasn't. But it will be my camera until there is and R3 II or maybe an R1.

  • @JeremyWalton

    That's true. A lot of hype then nothing. Maybe because of the cost and cheaper options became available. It checked all the things I needed for a camera and I couldn't be happier with it. I wonder what the R3 II will bring to the table?

    Cannon Eos R3 is probably the best Full-Frame camera on the market, for example not only does it have focus-bracketing, but focus-bracketed photos can be combined to create one photo in-camera thus no need for software; yet there are lots of second-hand R3s for sale, how can anyone not like the R3?; presumably the used ones for resale were bought by dunces for vlogging

    Had the R5, iso at about 2000 starts to go to crap. I shoot a lot of wildlife and sports and a lot of evening shooting, took the r5 back and paid the difference for the the R3 and it does everything I need it to do.

    I shoot wildlife up to 12,800 if needed and it does just fine. And crop in capability of the R5 seems better than the R3. Either way, wildlife photogs will be trying to get the R1 when it’s released.

    I made my career with Canon cameras. Frankly, the biggest problem facing technology is the useless, thoughtless machines they made. They experienced an 8% shrinkage worldwide in 2023 and as a result, they had to close their centers in some countries. It's time to sell the Canon lenses we have.
