    Your review helped me to decide to buy a used R (with only a 2,000 shutter count!) for $1,000. I must say that I was immediately stunned by the EVF and the back screen! Then, when I downloaded the files and processed the photos… YIKES! What a camera… thanks for your comments.

    @@guenudenahum6423 I have issues with the R, R7, and R8 green tint in Luminar. To solve, before opening in Luminar, I converted the RAW files to DNG… it works. You can also convert to TIFF instead.

    You can do a comparison between the R , RP and R8 as it is some what many viewers are eager to know whether which one to pick in terms of for video purpose , for still photo , or both purpose with real life example. Great video for R ! Hopefully to see more.

    Hi, unfortunately I no longer have the R. I have never used the RP but own the R6 Mkii which has the same sensor as the R8. I have to Say that it really isn't a contest between the first generation RF cameras and the latest generation in terms of video features. If your a video shooter I personally would go with the R7 overall, or an R8 if you really need full-frame.

    I'm trading up from a DSLR Canon 5D Mark iii. I'd like to get the canon r6 (mk ii) but the price diff (for used) with RF lens is $1,000 more than the R! I'd primarily use it for portrait/landscape photography R, but I'm also interested in street photography so would the R6 be better for that? Also, need to look into firmware updates with the R camera. I also heard about green tint in raw files. Recommendations for correcting in camera or in post?

    First off the r6 mkii is by far the best of the 3 cameras having owned all 3 myself. The colors from all 3 cameras are different with the r6 and r6 mkii being more similar. I never had a problem with the files from the R but many people have reported issues when switching from one camera to another as there is always an adjustment period learning to edit different files. For portrait and landscape the R is good as it has the most resolution of the 3. The R6/R6 mkii has far better (and more complicated) AF than the R. With the R6 you are taking a significant resolution hit (though the files do look great). For street it depends on whether your using AF or manual/zone focusing. The R6 is far better for tracking moving subjects. As for correcting in camera or post it really depends on what you are shooting (raw/jpeg) and what software your using to process the file (lightroom/DPP). Personally I correct in post. I have always found the jpegs look great straight out of Canon cameras. Hope that helps.

    Thanks for your review. I'm on a tight budget and want to buy a Canon FF mirrorless + a 24-105 4F. I am hesitating between R and R6, there are three things that make me doubt: 1-The small information dial that the R has, I find interesting (I guess you can live without it). 2-Doesn't the body construction of the R6 look like a "toy"? 3-I wonder if the 20 Mg will be enough for advertising photography. My intention is to use it for many types of photos (landscape, children, still lifes, maybe some videos, animals...). Any suggestions as an R6 Mkii owner? Thanks again!

    A lot will depend on price. The R is a great budget option, especially if your focused on photography. The R6 is a solid camera and would personally be my choice if your looking for a hybrid camera as the video and ibis make it more versatile in that regard. Hope that helps.

    do you think the 24mp newer cameras with same sensor size collect more light since the pixels are ikely larger?

  • @amourphoto

    @amourphoto

    3 ай бұрын

    They don't collect more light per say, but have better iso performance as the larger the size of the photosites the lower the noise floor of the sensor is in general.

    They say it's the same sensor as the 5D IV. I used them simultaneously, and the R was always definitely much softer with perfect focus, too. As well as, the R had magenta tinge to it in many scenarios. The IQ in the 5D IV is much better in my opinion.

  • @amourphoto

    @amourphoto

    2 ай бұрын

    I never shot the 5D IV so can't comment decisively. I will say that from looking at shots from the 5D IV and the R that they do seem to render very similarly. The difference in sharpeness may be due to factors such as a different anti-aliasing filter. It's interesting how even when camera companies reuse parts in other cameras the results are not always identical.

    I am confused between r8 and eos r ....bec i heard many ppl saying that canon r8 has overheating issues....so i am thinking of buying eos R in 2024.....and even it has better resolution ...so what do you suggest? Should i buy r? Or r8...

  • @amourphoto

    @amourphoto

    Ай бұрын

    Hi and thanks for your comment! If you are looking at primarily shooting video then I would choose the R8. It is true that there can be overheating issues for longer form video shooting but it will really depend on what you are shooting and for how long. In my opinion the video out of the R8 is far better than the R. I wouldn't be too concerned about the loss of resolution in terms of photos, it is nice to have the 30mp of the R for portrait shooting but I find 24mp to be more than enough to cover 95% of my shooting needs. If price isn't an issue I would go with the R8, if you are only looking at video and are concerned about overheating then you may also want to consider the R7. Hope that helps, all the best!

    Agreed 3200 on the R is quite usable. I mainly shot fashion and portraits with the R so was always conservative and didn't like to go above 800 iso but for reportage 3200 isn't bad at all.

    I went from a 5D Mk II to the R6. It was like going from a dependable mate to a brilliant psycho. With the R6 it seems Canon listened to every photographer and gave them a button. And then said just set them to what you like. The end result is a camera that has no readily identifiable logic. It’s a hot mess. The Canon menu system is not fit for purpose any more. It needs a total rethink to deal with the complexity video brings to the machine. More of the same is confusing, maddening, fiddly and panic inducing. Then it fried itself. I was given a Blackmagic Pocket to try while the Canon was being rebuilt. It reminded me how good it feels to have a camera that is brilliant at doing one thing. Controls are where you need them, its design is not split into compromises. I gave the R6 another half a year. But I so missed the feeling of comfort I got from the 5D MkII and BMPCC - machines designed to do one job really well. I paid a Canon technician to try to help me connect to the R6, set it to my likings. But nah. It still hit me with gotchas and useless footage. So much footage junked due to the R6 getting it wrong. CLog is not nice to work with, I called it "clog". I'd had enough of the personality disorder. So I sold it. The R sounds like it could be just the machine. I dont care about the video. Fewer buttons is a bonus. For video no IBIS is also a bonus. I love waist high shooting using a touch screen. I'm keen.

    Thanks for the comment! Yes indeed going from a 5d 2 to an R6 would be a massive shock as the auto focus system is completely different in terms of both form and function. I actually really liked the R6 AF but I had already had nearly 5 years using the R to get used to mirrorless and eye AF and how different (good and bad) it is. The R is a great photo camera but is very crippled in terms of video compared to current cameras. The BMPCC is a dedicated video camera so would be better (except for AF) than most Canon hybrid cameras in that regard. An alternative could also be the 5D MK IV as it would give you an experience much closer to the 5D MK2. I hope you find a camera that works for your needs going forward, all the best.

    @@amourphoto I actually really like the manual focus and think for video AF is wholly overrated. Too slow from bag to switch on to select mode to select target to record. So many missed shots and a lot of footage that looks like a robot took it. Most folk who demand video AF seem to be shooting long takes of themselves. This is a bias we need to be aware of in these reviews. (A worthy topic.) I shoot 5 to 10 second clips to build scenes. Since abandoning AF and IBIS and honing technique… improvement everywhere. AF for stills is brilliant and I miss the R6 for the exquisite candid waist high stills I shoot. So the R with the AF and larger flip-out touch screen is ideal. The touch screen, eyes down, point and shoot is a style of photography the 5D can’t do. Wierdly the R6 could do this style too but because it is covered in buttons holding it low would mean your palm would depress the custom buttons on top right and suddenly it would spack out. Grrr Thanks for your tips.

    @@vividstudio4651 Agreed. I think it depends on the situation, your set up and skill level as focus pulling is a skill that takes time to develop. Manual focus gives the most artistic control in the end but AF can be nice in certain situations.

    I am still happy with my EOS R, after 5 years and 10's of thousands of photos and many videos. But I would not buy one again in 2024. Five years have made a lot of difference in cameras. Unless you are constrained to buy one because of lack of money, buy an R6 or R8. Everything is better, faster and will make your life much easier than futzing around with a five year old R.

  • @amourphoto

    True, what I love about the R is the sensor which I think still holds up to this day. Canon took a different approach with the R in terms of layout and buttons that really haven't aged very well overtime but I still think the R is an all time classic Canon camera. Thanks for the comment!
