Should You Buy a WV Golf 1.4 TSI Bluemotion?

Volkswagen’s all-new, seventh-generation Golf went on UK sale with prices from £16,285. Is it worth your hard-earned cash? We’ve driven the 138bhp 1.4-litre petrol to find out.
After 39 years and 29 million Golf sales, VW has finally crashed its hatchback icon into the class above. The seventh generation is now so refined, so grown-up, so classy, that it leaves the likes of Ford’s Focus and Vauxhall’s Astra wheezing in its wake. Its new parking space? Slap bang in the middle of the pristine lawns of BMW, Mercedes and Audi. That’s because it’s based on remarkable new hardware, the VW Group’s ‘MQB’ chassis architecture, which also underpins Audi’s new A3 (and many Audis, Seats, Skodas and other VWs to come).

Not much difference between them really. Sport mode just gives a little quicker throttle response and better exhaust note. This is a very frugal car yet still packs a decent punch. Thanks for watching.

I just bought one from the same year with more than double the mileage of the one featured here. It appears to have been reasonably well cared for and still feels solid and drives really nicely. I did an OBD scan and was surprised to find not a single fault code. I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now and definitely no regrets. Mine has the 7 speed DSG box which is also smooth and a pleasure to use. Only issue is slight noise from the suspension over uneven surfaces and it will probably need new bushes at some point but I think it will be ok for at least another year and that’s a fairly minor job. One thing to keep an eye on is the oil consumption as some examples are known to burn oil. This is normal up to a point. Make sure you use the recommended oil and replace regularly.

@@kreshnikkona3866 I’ve had it for over a year now and still no obvious issues. It does however seem to slip the clutch a little at low speeds but not sure if that’s how it’s meant to be. For example if I’m at crawling speed and let it gently edge forward without pressing the throttle, it holds an indicated second gear but I suspect it’s not fully engaged, but it’s not obvious. At very low speeds in heavy traffic I sometimes override it and manually select and hold first at idle speed and that has less of a sensation of slipping. The only other minor issue is when first selecting drive to set off, it sometimes remains in neutral and I get a warning to apply the brake before it actually selects but I only need a very quick dab of the brake pedal to do that. Overall very happy with this car and after recently driving my friend’s much newer BYD EV it was a pleasure to get back into my old Golf again. Recently I got around 950km to a tank of fuel and one journey averaged around 24km per litre although I was driving very gently to achieve that but it shows how efficient these engines are.
