There's no doubt that the Volkswagen Golf has earned its place at the front of the family hatchback pack. Over 45 years and eight generations it's been a mainstay in the sector, and the seventh-generation model was arguably the best of the bunch.
The Mk7 Golf was launched in 2013 and received a facelift in 2017, but all versions pack the model’s trademark quality, practicality and user-friendly tech. Other strong points include its classy and understated looks, peerless refinement and a wide variety of bodystyles and engines with varying levels of performance and economy. It offered safe yet engaging handling and excellent ride comfort, while a variety of driving aids made it extremely safe yet reasonably enjoyable to drive.
The Golf has always been slightly more expensive to buy than its closest rivals, but used examples hold on to their value like few other mainstream family hatchbacks, so it’s a car that makes sense to the head and the heart. Its appeal is further broadened by the availability of stylish three-door models and even more practical five-door estate versions. Here's Vicki Butler-Henderson to explain how to bag the best used example possible.

I've done 142,000km (88,200mi) in my 2015 1.4TSI. No expensive issues at all, a great ownership experience!

Cutting costs - I noticed the same from the MK2 Octavia to the MK3. Even skimping on moving the handbrake tot he right hand side for the sake of what's probably a few cents.

just bought 2017 mk7 gti used with 20k millage best bang for buck car. The perfect daily drive

You purchased your car at exactly the right time. 👏🏼
Bought my Golf new in 2015. It's a 2016 1.8t 3 door which I'm running a stage one tune and I have had zero failures so far. Just maintenance and one recall that was taken care of in one day.
I've done 82000 km in my 2018 Golf 7.5 GTI and had no issues at all. Only now I'm due to change the original Bridgestone summer tires. Brake discs and pads are also original. Engine is a charm, same for the DSG. And it's stage 1 tuned too!
I have an eNiro, but still held onto my Mk 7 Golf. Only done 28k miles, so I'll be sticking with it for a while yet.
I've had my 2015 1.2 TSI for 2 1/2 years. It's very comfy and has excellent fuel economy. However the interior rattles, the door speaker sealings gave up and started to leak water into the interior, this will happen to all mk7 golfs by the way. There is also quite a lot of rust on the front and rear subframes, but then i live in Sweden. Also if you looking for a petrol golf, get a post 2014 model. Vw changed the piston ring design mid 2014 and prior to that Tsi engines are prone to consume a lot of oil.
I had a 2018 1.5 tsi. Best car I’ve ever owned. I have a 22 plate a3 now and it’s actually not as good other than newer infotainment tech
Have. mK7 GTI performance fully loaded with DCC Leather etc, since 2014 still only 20k DSG suits it fab box, had porsches for 20 yrs this suits me,great for A & B roads some road noise on 19” wheels but not that bad, quiet on tarmac, they must love them in germany! Service still running keep to it and its cheap,so is insurance due to safety on board computer options..
For mk7, watch your battery. If it runs very low it can cause sensor problem and write error into EEPROM. I got "Instrument Cluster error. WORKSHOP" on screen. If you see "Error" where trip mileage display is and hear beep on start up.. you're facing 1500e bill in Ireland. VW will tell you there is no fix , new Instrument cluster required. I took it to Instrument specialist, he couldn't fix. Locked vw code etc. Car will still work but affects resale value. Its a great car for passenger space and driver comfort. I love mine. Lovely car for long drive. I get just short of 900km from 1.6tdi bluemotion on full tank. Agree with upgrading bulbs and using bosch wipers. Great review
I'm enjoying mine. Match 1.5t estate. I had Leon ST before and the golf does feel a bit smarter inside and better insulated. The adaptive cruise control is also a nice feature to have. DSG is also pretty good. It's classic VW in that it feels solid and functional rather than posh. But you get out of pricier cars and don't feel like you're hugely missing out. I could have got a new mark 8 or this and I didn't like the control layout or drop in quality of the new model. The leon/focus are a bit sportier and the Octavia more practical (but also larger) but this strikes a good balance.

I keep toying with the idea of selling my Golf and getting a Leon.... The Leon looks great and seems a bit more of a sportier car and drive. However my little 2014 1.4 Golf just does nothing wrong, lovely ride and comfortable to travel in, the engine is responsive and very capable for normal driving. Octavia is a great car but is just a little too big for what I need... As you say the Golf just seems to strike an excellent balance!
Got a 64 plate 1.6 TDI Bluemotion and has been great car to drive for over 5 years! Done 37k miles on it. Unfortunately boot well fills up with rain, so I keep having to remove every other weekend as rains pretty much all the time in the uk. Also my radar Active Cruise Control has stopped working so hoping it’s not an expensive fix like I think it might be…
I saw a Golf GTI Clubsport S Mk7 listed at 46000 pounds. Pristine condition, with nanocoated paint. That think looks awesome in dark blue color. I want one! Problem is, I don’t live in the UK. 😂
Anyone else have leaking coolant which needed the water pump replaced, apparently it's a common problem with the mk 7 or 7.5
Love my Golf Sportwagen 1.8T 4motion 6 speed
Vicki! So nice to see you. Hope to see more of you. :)
Traded in my BMW for a 1.4 mk7 because I wanted a more practical car. It’s the most refined car I’ve driven in its class. I put 70,000 miles already with zero issues, apart from the paint peeling on the door edge which was resprayed under warranty. Power is adequate. It’s not a slow car but it’s no sports car either.
أحلى سيارة صنعت من غولف Best Golf ever i like it !

Sure, the Focus is a tad sharper, if you're a budding Sterling Moss. But the Golf Mk7 has the Focus well and truly beaten for ride comfort, interior space, economy, refinement, fuel consumption and build quality. Mk8 reportedly not quite as good as the Mk7, although I haven't driven one.
That was very basic and missed a key point. Rather than a smeary wiper check the radar works for the cruise control! Really handy feature when it works but an expensive repair if it doesn’t. Mk7’ radar are located in an area that can easily be damaged. Also DSG gearbox’s have a known fault with the mecahtronic control unit. A very expensive repair. Fabulous cars though! I am on my 5th… GTI…
88,257 in my 1.6 TDi. Nothing other than regular servicing. Great car, with no problems. Just had the cambelt changed to be on the safe side (8 years old), but I predict this car will run for many, many years to come. 68 mpg regularly without really trying. Why would I buy an electric car?
she really presenting the GTI model like the average man who wants to buy a golf buys a GTI with 245hp, good old 2.0 TDI is what the people will like
No mention of the Golf SV. More spacious and practice than the standard car.

probably fixed by now but its a configurable option under, car, settings, mirrors and wipers, tick fold on lock option DAB dont know but maybe thats configurable as well?
Had a 7.5 1.5 tsi - dash rattles, trim issues and worst of all , soft paint which would mar the look despite 3 bucket approach. R line was available in pre facelift also Vikki.
One of my childhood friends got one of these. I'm really happy for him! Congrats to all new and soon-to-be GTI owners

@@paultasker7788 hi Paul, I sold my lovely 7.5 gtd as I was getting a company car, a mk 8 I thought?, no need to even test drive. I thought the frowning front would grow on me, it didn’t, the infotainment system was awful, would freeze frequently which included I couldn’t change the heating and heated seats . The air vents are too low down and wouldn’t reach your face. The interior definitely felt cheaper with more hard plastics than before. The engine was great however, Fortunately I have changed jobs and have never been so glad to see the back of a car.!
