I have a 2010 XC90 which I purchased because Iv always had BMW’s and I got fed up of the chime of doom. I replaced the sat nav unit for a interested 10 inch touch screen with car play etc and Bluetooth streaming, j then added some 20inch wheels from a 2018 car. It now feels and looks a bit more modern and although it’s drive doesn’t compare to the Bmw or Audi it’s the only car Iv ever had that in 12 months has never let me down, has been cheap to maintain and I have never struggled to carry a load. It will probably explode in into a million parts now I wrote this

Oh, and the Satnav can be controlled via a series of buttons on the steering wheel behind the audio controls. Once you learn the functions and how to feel your way around the hidden controls, it's okay to use. The remote control is for the passenger to navigate for you and is useful in that respect. I think Volvo knew what they were doing with that idea.

i've never been a volvo guy as such.. but i've owned two, and during the ownership of them i grew quite fond of them. the thing with volvos is that they really go deep on making them usable as family vehicles. they dont try to be sporty, they dont try to outhandle bmw's. but when you pavk them up with luggage dogs and kids and start using them on a daily basis, you get it.. same goes for the xc90, i never liked driving them. but my friends that have them love them

Having gone from an X5 M-Sport to a late 2011 XC90 - I take some of the points regarding its handling, but not in relation to reliability. Compared to the X5, these things are comparably bulletproof. No issues with driving position. Mine is an R-Design, whether it's the alloys or suspension that help, I don't know - but it isn't too bad in the corners albeit not as proficient as an X5 in the bends. It's no sports car for sure, but will hussle when you need it to. I thought I'd hate it as a motorcyclist - it's the polar opposite of a Fireblade! But, for practicality, reliability, comfort and value for money - they are superb. I love it! Cruising along the motorway, or towing a caravan or horse box, it's perfect. Sat Nav and parking brake are the worst features. Both work, but are a bit rubbish tbh!

@@petrvokurek2286 Hi Petr.... I'd agree, but have you driven an older Xc90 V8? For my sins.... I have just bought a 2009 V8 and I love it.... But then I'm basing my experience on a Ford Escape (Kuga in UK?) 2.5, which was fun to drive hard but lacked the finesse of my Volvo. I'd agree that if the Xc90 was a bit lighter, it would be better. The steering is a bit vague.(Maybe someone can suggest a solution.)But why compromise? I have a very solid, very fast, very comfortable, very adaptable, very well made car...... I would not exchange it for a similar aged car of the so-called "equivalence" ..... Because none come close!

You're right about the engine being a bit underpowered for the XC90. The turbo lag on take-off from a stop is dreadful on my 2006 year 185hp D5. It can really catch you out when judging the distance between you and an approaching car, and the resulting torque steer if you are accelerating hard from zero and turning in the process can be ferocious. We've owned ours since about 2012 and we're sort of used to it but those driving characteristics can still surprise you. The engine does sound too noisy and agricultural for what was a premium product. It does wallow around bends, too. But as a long distance cruiser for driving all over Europe with two kids and two large dogs and a 6 berth tent, it'll be hard to beat. Practicality is extremely good and fuel economy is acceptable - the consumption figures you gave are about right. Good video as usual.

Great review and you highlighted where I am... 'Wanting something between the Disco and X5." I've a 2006 model with the same duff satnav. I off-road just enough, but nothing tough and I motorway drive long hours. I describe it as point and shoot with cruise control set at 95mph. Gets you comfortable there and refreshed. I like the seats (big guy). Expensive to maintain, but its over 200k miles. I love (flash) camping with it. I put on the roof box and bikes on the back. It cruises nicely on the motorway but doesn't like corners as you say. However it has saved me on ice and snow... It handles so well in these conditions that you sometimes forget. I love it for my practical needs only. Would consider a Disco 4 or Touareg as alternatives, but they are even bigger fuel guzzlers.

The D5 engine work really well in the lighter / smaller XC60 👍🏼 pulling it forward with relative ease.

I totally agree 👍🏼 I think Volvo should have made an exclusive Diesel engine for the XC90, something like a Straight 6 (like you said) or even a Diesel V8 💪🏼😎 in the same way they outsourced that lovely Yamaha V8 petrol engine which was only available in the top speck S80 and the XC90 😎 both being top of the Volvo line up.

The best engine would have been the T6 from 2012 with 340 ps and at least the 6 speed automatic. That engine I like.. Suppose you could have made a diesel out of that one too.. but.. gas i nicer..

Thank you for this review. Was considering one of these. Here in the US we have the Petrol V8 versions. Ive never driven one tho. I got rid of my L320 RRS and bought an 08 Ford Expedition EL which is about twice the length of this Volvo! Drives like a truck, because, well, its basicy an F-150 long bed with a different body on it. All F-150 parts fit the Expeditions. My wife can never park it and hates the fact that i got rid of the L320 lol. Not refined, heavy, etc. But due to having a special needs boy that requires lots of pumps and luggage, i jumped the gun and bought the Expedition EL “Limited”. Dont get me wrong, I love it!...but its a TRUCK! Tows 9,000lbs! Captains chairs, AC seats, real wood steering wheel, powerfolding 3rd row, power tailgate, power running boards, touch screen with st/nav, rear DVD entertainment, High End sound system with subwoofer, etc. So this Volvo has been on my radar.. so im considering jumping ship back to a European SUV. An LR3/4 would be great but slightly out of the price range for me here in the US. MY L320 was always costly to maintain. But i loved how it wallowed and floated down the road! That driving position too was unlike any other! Just a suggestion,...you should really do a video on the Expedition EL/Chevy Suburban...not sure if they have them across the pond tho. Great vid tho! Much appreciated!

I have an Astra k at the moment diesel very economical, it’s a 2016 model, hopefully keep it for the next 4 yrs. My next car will probably be a petrol hybrid, as the market distances itself from diesel

I've got a 2013 one of these which I've had from new as a family wagon and the review is pretty fair. Although I think it's a really comfortable car to be in, either driving or sitting in the passenger seat. But it does everything asked of it in a kind of 'OK' way - there's are no peaks of triumph, but there's no troughs of disaster either. Been really reliable, only one major bill in the time we've had it, everything still works. It's really practical and bowls along nicely full of kids crap and a bike rack on it on the way to the middle of France for hols. The satnav is shockingly crap. Luckily I have a toy car for driving.

Just watched the video. Good review. I picked up a 2006 Executive in Sep 2018. 110K on the clock and I ran it until Dec 2019 when I sold it and bought a new shape B5 Momentum. A purchase that was a direct result of that first Volvo experience. I can honestly say I loved every mile I drove that 2006 car. It was probably the most well screwed together car I've ever had including BMW, Jaguar and Landrover. They are built like tanks and feel bombproof. The car I had was immaculate and had been well maintained by a Volvo main dealer. It came with a FSH that was as thick as two stacked house bricks and was just a great car experience. Space, comfort and a feeling of security. Not as thirsty as you may think but, as ever, it depends how heavy your right foot is.... Had to smile at the mention of the seats. First time I went through a couple of country road twists and turns I found myself sliding as Physics took over but they are big comfortable. Didn't recognise the arm rest issue - perhaps I'm bigger and wider than you :-) Not sure I agree with the engine and acceleration. I didn't tend to floor mine but on occasion I had to it it shifted. No worries on that score and that was without knocking it into the manual gear option. Pulled a horse box without fuss and as for the boot, space was never going to be an issue. Any problems? Couple of cosmetic ones: the side panels on the front seats can crack over time. Both replaced for around £40 by SLR Motors (see below) and one oil weep which was traced back to the bottom seal being crimped when the timing belt had been changed by the Volvo main dealer. Easy and relatively quick / inexpensive to resolve. That aside I put 4 new tyres on it. Finally a big shout out to SLR Motors in Moore, Warrington who sold me the car and then maintained it. Absolutely first class experience car buying and servicing. Seb the owner is an absolute font of all Volvo knowledge and is a truer gentleman to deal with.

Thanks for the review. I haven’t read all of the comments so I’ll apologise in advance if I’m being repetitive. It’s my understanding that the sat nav remote is for your passengers (if you have any) to use rather than the driver fumbling around with it. You should find that all the sat nav buttons are discretely placed behind the steering wheel. They’re not in view so are easily overlooked. That said, it isn’t a rewarding system to use and the cost of the latest update ‘discs’ is prohibitive. Later Volvos download these from t’interweb so are much more user friendly. I was once told that XC90 owners whinge about some of the things you’ve picked up on but often go on to buy another XC90, I did. They just work for certain people at certain points in their lives. My caravan is gone and so are my XC90s. Keep the video reviews coming, they’re brill.

After 3 years of suffering I bit the bullet and got shut, couldn’t live with it any longer.

  • @felix3138

This logic is the wrong way around. 200hp is WAY more than enough to transport 7 people, say around 500kg. 2.2 tons is just far, FAR too heavy for vehicle that is designed to carry only 500kg. This in turn has it’s effect on wear of parts (therefore reliability), performance, fuel efficiency and maintenance cost. This is a defect in the car industry as a whole nowadays. Engines need to get ever more efficient to “save the planet”, while the weight of the vehicles are getting ridiculous! I had a Daihatsu Cuore from 1999 which weighed 0,6 tons and could carry 4 adults. So the weight equivalent “2,2 tons of Daihatsu” could carry 14 adults with 100kg to spare! Granted, a Daihatsu Cuore is an extreme oposite, so there is much room for a middle ground. But 2,2 tons for a car, come on guys!

If I drive smoothly the 8 uses around 13L/100klm combined, the XC70 used around 11. And compared to other V8s in its class the XC90 has way better efficiency.
