    No. Depending on the upgrade path, single channel may be preferable. A couple of years ago when ram prices were $100+ for an 8 GB stick, I built a budget gamer box for a guy who just lost his job. The mobo had 2 slots for RAM, so the choice was made for 1x8GB because he'd add more later. In testing between 2x4GB and 1x8GB, the performance difference in games was less than 10%. Blender was ~25% better in dual channel.

    He also explained why, he said you can easily upgrade it later, it is just to have a complete working system . If he included more ram (or even worse, 2x4gb sticks...), then it wouldn't be the lowest possible budget to get a running system that you can easily upgrade to be better a month after or so.

    yea. like he stated even at the start of the video... sometimes it's about the upgrade path, more than the current performance. $350 will get you up and running. the SMART option is choosing components that you can add to instead of replace, when your budget is that limited. if i have 8gb installed, and want to upgrade to 16.... -if i have 2x4gb to take advantage of dual channel, and it's a budget (or just an ITX) board with only 2 ram slots... i have to toss out the old ram to get better. -if i have 1x8 ... ok i lose out on the dual channel boost... FOR NOW... but all i need is to buy another 1x8 to go in beside it, and i'm not wasting any old components.

  • @Mike_Hogsheart

    @Mike_Hogsheart

    @@tzxazrael honestly, that's just not a realistic scenarion. For one, an ITX build on a budget is an oxymoron. You are definitely paying a premium if you go with ITX, so any reasonable budget build will go with either mATX or ATX. Once you go mATX or ATX, you might as well get a 4 slot board. The 2 slot boards are the bottom of the barrel, which is the exact opposite of what you want if future upgradability is something you care about. TL;DR: you always go with dual channel memory, even if you are on a budget. Always.

  • @crunchbar777

    @@tzxazrael Have to say if you are going two memory slots you should still get dual channel, sell the 2x4 memory chips and use that money to help invest in 2x8, not like ddr4 is going out of style any time soon so you will get close to what you payed for it. Memory is one of those things that doesn't depreciate in value quickly since it is used on so many different generations of consumer hardware. Best advice for an AMD budget build is to buy the fastest memory you can at a set price point in dual channel. the price difference between corsair vengeance 3200mhz vs 2400 mhz is literally 2-5 dollars and sometimes they cost exactly the same. You will benefit from that way more than it's worth waiting to buy a second memory stick down the line, most people won't feel the need to upgrade for much longer since the performance will be so much better, and when they do just follow the advice in my first paragraph. Sure it's a tad bit more work but compared to having a much slower PC it's worth it.

    Yeah. I agree. By using just a twin stick of RAM instead of one, the built in graphic chip would have seen a massive performance increase due to doubling the data exchanged. Then overclocking the CPU and the memory would have add another boost. Instead adding an external GPU defeats the purpose of the whole budget PC.

Which, on the contrary, may be something like Pt 2c on 775 socket or Xn 4c, maybe even FM1 and FM2 sockets. Not to mention the whole horde of FX-users who try to push limits out of Bulldozer core.
