Always appreciate your opinions on these cars from a mechanics point of view. One slight note is that the 2.0L engine is actually mpi (multi port) not port only (still better overall than direct only). Also the cvts have a steel belts in them, which are normally only used for larger suv's. Not saying it's going to be more durable in the long run, but nice to know that certain componets were thought out in that way. I owned a 2020 kia soul for 3 and a half years and put 75k miles on it (worked for uber for a year and a half during pandemic) and out side of having an idler pulley fail causing wear on the belt (replaced under warranty) it was a great setup that got really good gas mileage. If your just driving around town and keep up with maintenance, it should last longer than the turbo model (unless you really want the extra power it puts down)

On the matter of the rear suspension, and this is something you might not know. The Hybrid (Not available in the US) and the EV use the Multi link McPherson strut like the AWD and N-Line. I will note some markets (Australia for example) only get AWD in the N Line. Hybrid is FWD only. For me, the side looks a lot better on the N-line where all the plastic is body coloured, then the design lines make a LOT more sense.

I loved my 2017 sonata up until recently. I bought it new, and have taken really good care of it. But when it hit 80,000 miles it has just started to fall apart it seems. Axles leaking and slinging grease, moisture inside headlight assembly, 3rd brake light flickering, knock sensor went out and threw the car in limp mode (that was a big one, had to be towed), and a few other minor issues. Between my extended warranty and the powertrain warranty it's not costing me any money at least. But getting an appointment with the dealership to get issues looked at is the worst experience you will ever have to go through. When your only car breaks down and every dealer in town tells you they can't even look at it for 4 months you'll be ready to dump it right then and there. When you accompany all these minor issues I've been having with the absurd wait times to try and get them addressed, it's got me considering dumping it. It's only going to get worse as it gets older. It's a shame because I really do love the car. I would be willing to overlook the minor issues I've had if it wasn't such a pain to get them taken care of.

Thanks so much for the great and thorough review. I don't agree that it's reminiscent of the Aztec though. I bought one of these back in October. I got the SEL with "Convenience Package" and all wheel drive. I really wanted to get the Limited edition with the better motor but at 6' 5" tall, I cannot have a sun/moon roof in a vehicle. And very disappointedly you cannot get the Limited or the N series trim without it! Quite the bummer as I hate the lack of pickup that it has but other than that, I think it's a great car. Much agreed about the gas mileage as well. Not sure how I am getting the same MPG as I did on my 2019 Santa Fe with 50k miles on it that I traded in. It is very roomy feeling inside and the technology is great for the price along with the amount of safety features you get. Been buying Hyundai's since 2010 and they still deliver on that. You didn't mention the cargo net, which mine came with. It is pretty useless for groceries as it does not go across the width of the vehicle but is more of a trap, to hold a box or something similar in place. I plan to trade it in when it is approaching 3 years and if they still have the same engine options and sun/moon roof packaging, then I am going over to Toyota to get a RAV 4 Hybrid to get more HPs. There is a Hybrid Kona I believe but not yet in the US.

my 2018 kona is still running smoothly but i want this kona update really bad. while my DCT in my kona isn't broken yet, I completely agree with your transmission point. DCT is bad in traffic but good in highway, CVT is mid in traffic but bad in high way, but normal TC Automatics are relatively well in both situations, so i don''t understand why manufacturers tend to do CVTs and DCTs. to be honest the efficiency only dips a little when choosing a TC auto. and CVTs and DCTs often cost more in repairs and is less reliable than traditional automatics.

And as far as that automatically opening tailgate? That gets old pretty fast, if you hesitated all around the back of the car, the gates gonna open. Again personally, I couldn’t turn off the automatic gate, opening feature fast enough. All in all the very good review, keep them coming!

For what it’s worth I owned a 2020 Kona SEL AWD with the Plus package and traded it at 37k miles and 4 years of ownership. The car ran flawlessly the whole time. Fit and finish was actually great with no squeaks or rattles. I wanted something with more room and power so I traded in on a 2024 Passport Trailsport. The Kona got around 30-32 MPG on the highway and 28MPG in town. It was included in an engine recall campaign but my engine never failed. Overall I was very pleased with it and after I replaced the awful factory tires with Bridgestone Turranzas the car handles like a little go kart. I would consider buying one again if I bought one new, especially now with more room. My transmission was a 6 speed and it was pretty smooth and sport mode actually transformed the personality quite a bit. Quick heads up, my ex wife’s 2019 Sonata SEL also had that sensor trunk release. We had a love/hate relationship with it as it was easy to set off in our small garage.

Nline has body colored without black cladding. The design is partially for the coefficient of drag. 2024 Kona was designed as a *EV first* then modified for ICE. Opposite from what most do. The swooping design has a function its not just because. HMG updated the first new vehicles made with their latest tech...lol. As each line is either redesigned or refreshed (see new Santa Fe/Sorento) the updated tech will be included. I can't think of any manufacturer that does it any other way. Genesis will get updates as well as they get around to their refresh or redesign one would think.

I actually love the wheel/fender area. The weird angles make it look kind of hectic/erratic. It’s very cool looking. Now I can’t say the same about the strange bubble towards the back. Reminds me of when you spill water on particle board furniture and it swells up. It’s an eye sore… The Toyota Sienna has something similar to this side bulge. Ppl say it’s a “looker” as far as vans are concerned, but eww so I hate that side panel “particle board” bubble. I’d still drive this and love the style. It’s so different in the front and back and wheel area. I respect ur opinion, but I also disagree that they were lazy in the design. It may not tick all the boxes, but it’s not cookie cutter which I appreciate.

I currently own a 2020 Kona Limited which overall has been the best car I have ever owned. Your comment regarding the DCT is only somewhat accurate. Is it a good transmission for bumper to bumper stop and go traffic, no. But it's miles better than any other traditional or CVT transmissions that I have experienced in all my previous many cars. The exterior looks of the Kona obviously won't win any beauty awards, but it's a practical reliable car that I would purchase again.

I've had the car since October 1st of 2023 and love it more every day. I had a 2021 Sonata Limited before this and a 2018 Genesis G80 Sport before that and loved them. But, believe it or not, this has been my favorite of them all. Love your great reviews and keep up the good work!

Looking at a Limited AWD this fall and if I get one, it's going to be the Red Kona with Gray interior! Sharp!! Better than that "Yellow Submarine" color they keep promoting.

That's what I got the red Kona with the grey interior. I was originally going to get White, but my dealership actually had all the colors, except for the Neon Yellow, and I actually liked the Red the best.

Excellent review. You're quite logical in your assessment and I like your insight into the mechanical aspects of vehicles. For me, Hyundai's exterior design language is not too good. I appreciate them wanting to be unique and try something different, but different can be beautiful. The Kona and Elantra are not beautiful. They're overwrought. The interiors on both are styled in a very classy way though.

opening the back hands free is great. I am unloading the car at home and have my hands full after unloading. How do I close it? The close button is a little high for me to jump up and peck at it with my nose. With my RAV4 I simply do another back door dance to close it.

i think it's kinda disappointing the kona got bigger. the old kona was an excellent hatchback for people who wanted to pretend they didn't buy a hatchback. It was a foot shorter than actual hatchbacks like the civic hatch, crosstrek/impreza, and forte5. you could fit it anywhere, and by all accounts, the kona N was a hoot to drive. or if you just wanted creature comforts, u could option it out nicer than most other small cars, which were built to lesser price points. it had a lil niche. googling it now, and the new kona is still small... just two inches longer than a golf GTI. but its like 5 inches taller, and it feels like this is just another baby step towards the death of the hatchback (and the small car) in north america.

lol re: kick sensors. The first time I tried installing a hitch-mount bike rack, on to a brand spankin new car, i was tightening a bolt and the hatch triggered. By the grace of god, the plastic wheel trays of a Thule T2 weren't hard enough to scratch factory volvo paint... but it's happened more than once since and it's annoyed me enough that i've thought about disconnecting it.

Just a note re spare tire. Only included on the AWD for Limited models. I purchased the FWD.. Not only is it not included, Hyundai doesn't make it available after purchase. Hopefully, some 3rd party vendor will step up to address.

The plastics around the wheels also have a very practical side. Almost all minor parking accidents will be affecting these areas, so repair will be much cheaper than to metal parts.

Thanks for your review. I am considering to buy the hybrid version 141HP, that seems to be very fuel efficient due to 6 DCT transmission, even more than Toyota CVT transmission. But... are these DCT transmissions really problematic? lifetime (km)? I drive in city 2.000 km/year and 18.000 km/year in highway aprox. Hopping for a review of hybrid version. FYI, I tested Toyota Corolla Cross 140H, the noise at the back seats becoming from the back are huge to me. The supplied technologie (360 camera, etc...) is less than Kona Best regards from Spain
