Recently, there has been a lot of talk in the media about LDS garments (sometimes referred to as “Mormon underwear” or “magic Mormon underwear”). The recent focus comes mostly from members of the Church of Jesus Christ but also from non-members of the LDS Church. Many members have opinions about the frequency in which one should wear the temple garment, the material of a temple garment, and more. This episode addresses the host’s opinions about the garment. Should the garment be worn all the time? Is the garment magic? Should the garment be removed for specific activities?

    Not sure why this is seen as a gray area when I personally feel this is quite cut and dry. Here is an excerpt I love and used when teaching temple prep from “Preparing for the Blessings of the Temple” by Russell M. Nelson in 2010 “The temple garment symbolizes continuing commitment The wearing of the temple garment bears great symbolic significance and represents a continuing commitment. Just as the Savior gave us an example of His ability to endure to the end, wearing the garment is one way we demonstrate enduring faith in Him and in His eternal covenants with us. The First Presidency prepared a letter to the Church on this subject. They wrote: “Practices frequently observed among the members of the Church suggest that some members do not fully understand the covenant they make in the temple to wear the garment in accordance with the spirit of the holy endowment. “Church members who have been clothed with the garment in the temple have made a covenant to wear it throughout their lives. This has been interpreted to mean that it is worn as underclothing both day and night. … The promise of protection and blessings is conditioned upon worthiness and faithfulness in keeping the covenant. “The fundamental principle ought to be to wear the garment and not to find occasions to remove it. Thus, members should not remove either all or part of the garment to work in the yard or to lounge around the home in swimwear or immodest clothing. Nor should they remove it to participate in recreational activities that can reasonably be done with the garment worn properly beneath regular clothing. When the garment must be removed, such as for swimming, it should be restored as soon as possible. “The principles of modesty and keeping the body appropriately covered are implicit in the covenant and should govern the nature of all clothing worn. Endowed members of the Church wear the garment as a reminder of the sacred covenants they have made with the Lord and also as a protection against temptation and evil. How it is worn is an outward expression of an inward commitment to follow the Savior.”

    Outside of this, before I received my endowment, my bishop taught me the 3 S’s (exceptions or justifications in taking them off. It is important to note that even this is an opinion as my above excerpt states pretty clearly to not even take them off for yard work.) -Sweat -Swimming -Sex Even after he taught me this, he explained that he still exercises with his garments on as well as working in the yard and went on to share some powerful experiences of when they saved his life doing those activities. One time when the bench press bar fell on his chest and he didn’t suffer any pain at all when he should have been injured and another time when he lost control of a chainsaw, it tore his jeans up, but didn’t even nick a thread from his garments.

    @@shaylakenney141 what's funny is that every time I hear the famed "3 S exceptions", it is different. I was taught that it was sex, shower, swim. Others say it includes sports too. First time I have heard "sweat". That's extremely vague.... is it any wonder we have seen a huge blurring of the wearing of the garments? If "sweat" truly was a real exception then that would actually include yardwork, all recreation, all sports, and any hard work. My stake president's wife doesn't wear hers to sporting events in which she is a spectator. Another wife of a bishop in my stake told me she doesn't wear them at all in the summer because again - sweat. 🤔Today President Oaks stated that the removal of the garments should only be for times where it is *obviously* inappropriate to have them on (again, sex, shower, swim.)

    fun fact in 2012 when I went through the temple didn't say how to wear your garment or night and day- just throughout your life. the fact that you have to tell a grown man weither or not you wear your underwear night and day to get blessed by God is really weird. Other faiths have their faith vestments , but no one asks them about their underwear wearing !

    When I went to the temple with one of my daughters, the temple matron said that there is no reason to remove your garments when you exercise or hike. Good question. I think with garments it’s mainly about the symbolism of covenants you make with God more than the hemline. Of course we wanna stay wholesome + not expose too much, but God does update things. For example, garments being a biblical concept, Jews have worn religious clothing as well and they’ve updated over time. Personally I’m glad bc ppl back in the day used to wear a lot more clothing (i.e. giant poofy dresses) and I’m glad garments today reflect more comfortable, streamlined clothing we can move around in easier.

    I like your comment about making a list of when I should wear and don’t wear them. It’s a personal choice. Growing up I’ve known people while taking a bath they would drape them over there arms. I also had a Stake President that at times would go out jogging with his counselors not wearing them. It’s a personal choice. The church has come out with sometimes when you shouldn’t take them off. There’s also some people with certain medical conditions when at times it is not reasonable not to wear them. It’s mainly between you and the Lord. It’s like paying tithing. Do we pay on the net or gross. I’ve known people when they have there birthdays or Christmas that they want to know how much things costs so they can pay tithing on that There’s a scripture in the Doctrine and Covenants that says I should not command you in all things. Also we here’s a letter of the law vs the Spirit of the law.

    This is why we need to start when our children are little to put our children in modest clothing! When they get to be teenagers they need to continue wearing clothes that are modest regardless of what fashion says. If we teach them this from day one, it will be easier to adjust to wearing the garments. They need to be taught the spiritual meaning of the garment. But my concern is more the discussion here about when you see someone who isn't, and still attends the temple, or goes to church regularly, we are so easy to judge them or consider them as other or less faithful. I haven't gone through the temple yet, so I haven't ever had garments. I feel like this video was a bit of a loving reminder to me. It's saddening and frustrating for me to think about all the people who've gone through the temple and received their garments, and then they decide to not wear them because it's not fashionable, or comfortable. Then this thought comes... "Heavenly Father probably feels pretty sad and frustrated when I start doing the things that I know will hinder my spiritual, and personal growth too." Every dang time I start getting my crap together, I get these huge stumbling blocks that seem to really just knock me on my butt, instead of just tripping me up. ...BUT... Now I'm thinking (or wondering) if I'm supposed to experience these things that are necessary for me to be able to keep some perspective, for later on when I do finally go through the temple, and get my own garments. Also, It's like military training, sort of...if you think about it. We join God's "spiritual military" to become better spiritual warriors. The garments are our protective gear. They exist to help us, and remind us why we "enlisted" in the first place. It's hard being brave on a battlefield, when all you've ever known is civilian life, and you're wearing regular old street clothes. I feel way more capable of success when I am equipped with the necessary tools, and knowledge. I'm still in basic training, kind of. ..I haven't graduated from basic training yet, because I keep getting lost in the surrounding areas. (I wonder if I subconsciously self sabotage my own progress, knowing I'll have to leave civilian life behind, and hold myself to a higher standard.) One day though... One day I'm gonna be shod in full armor! It may be hot, and sticky, and heavy and uncomfortable, but I won't take it off unless I NEED to, not because I want to. (No way am I going to struggle so hard, and for so long, just to fall prey to vanity. ) Thank you guys, for taking the time and effort to reach out. You don't have anyone in particular in mind. You just reach, and whomever grabs your hand, you are there to help pull them to safety, if they choose to not let go! You guys are awesome. Thank you so much!

    Yes. If it hasn't been made clear about the guides to garment wearing then ask. It's pretty clear what the answer is considering one of the ten questions to receiving a temple recommend is if a member wears their temple garments every day. I wouldn't expect anyone to wear them when exercising such as biking, hiking, weights, cardio or playing sports. Would you wear them underneath a swimsuit? Of course not. Then why would you wear them during any other physical activity inside or outside? I would even say gardening can be considered a physical activity however, that is at the discretion of every individual.

  • @mamame3729

    @mamame3729

    See but this is where things get really murky and inconsistent. Many of us were told in the temple we only could wear a bra OVER our garments. The church put out an OFFICIAL statement not too long ago that the garment should not be removed for exercise, sports, or gardening. The letter specifically mentioned those things. So why all the inconsistencies? I believe that letter has been redacted now but all of us who were TBM back during that time have a hard time reconciling how we were shamed then, but now it’s okay? It’s hard to take a “rule” serious when the rule constantly changes depending on the year, the person you talk to, the priesthood holder’s opinion, etc. That vagueness and inconsistency tends to, over time, start to erode the validity of the garment as a concept of daily wear. And what about differences in body type? Garment tops went all the way to my collar bone due to how small chested I was - I literally could not wear women’s shirts at all because of it. I had to wear men’s tees in order to cover my garments. But big chested women at church were showing cleavage all over the place because the garment tops actually fit their body type. What a joke! Now what I am seeing is that it depends on your relation to the priesthood leader. I had a bishop’s wife tell me last summer that she won’t wear garments the entire summer because it’s too hot. Her husband allows her to have a temple recommend, but we were told specifically that wasn’t appropriate. The stake president’s wife doesn’t wear garments to community events that might include sports whether she is actually participating or not. Again, we were counseled *specifically* that that was inappropriate, but her husband allows her a temple recommend. I was told that if I did that I would not be wearing the garment appropriately. Is this favortism? Nepotism? Natural consequences of vagueness and inconsistencies? All of the above. And it’s hard to take it seriously anymore.

    The comment you made about Joseph not wearing them in Liberty Jail, brought a question to mind. When were the temple garments first introduced? Also when you talk about members who have left the church and not wearing garments anymore, there’s another side to that. I personally know people that aren’t going to church anymore that do still wear their garments but it is because for one they still respect the covenants they made in the temple. The other is, at least for the last time I heard, we aren’t supposed to make the decision when to stop wearing them. We are supposed to consult with our bishops. And never have I felt temptation from not wearing them. My love and loyalty to my husband has zero to do with my underwear. There used to be a cultural tradition with the LDS that you should not change out of your church clothes on Sunday or you might be tempted to break the sabbath. My husband’s mission president taught them that if they need to have law of Moses “rules” like that then they are a slothful servant. I agree. When I want through the temple for the first time(2012) it was said throughout your life , not night and day like now. I know fashion history and they had just below knee pantaloons and sleeveless chemises -aka undershirts in the mid 1800s. I don't understand the need to have sleeves on modern-day women's garments... or no decent v necks . As a : Old school intersectional post 90s feminist, seamstress who knows how clothing is produced I have so many frustrations with what's available and the whys that go into the whole manufacturing and why we as women have to suffer from ill fitting frumpy undergarments. Why is the presiding bishopric - who is a man is put in charge over the women's underwear & doesn't wear the articles of clothing meant for women's bodies? so many women I know get yeast infections from their garment or heat rashes. How does that make someone feel closer to God when they are miserable? I know I don't ! Also, I'd hate to be plus sized because the sleeves are longer and the necklines are higher. its like saying you cant be as comfortable or as stylish as a slimmer sister and we are going to make it even harder for you to feel good about the body God gave you . I also feel there is room for improvement in treating the workers who cut and sew them .. btw who are pied per piece-not living wages is ridiculous cause the church has TRILLIONS in investments and tithes that they could pay them , they could also cut out plastic aka polyester out of the fiber content that makes people overheat and creates micro plastics that goes into our water ..making every man women and child now carry a credit cards worth of plastic in our bodies, and making them better for the many women who are suffering . I hold my convents with God sacred, I also believe God doesn't look at the outward appearance but knows our intents our our hearts. who knows what the future will bring ? but I for one will not be dying of heat stroke before I find out !

    How about instead of worrying about how to wear underwear focus on Christ and what He accomplished on the cross. Jesus had the same problem with the Pharasees in His day. They were watching and judging everything He did. What other people do is between them and God. Those that want to follow all the churches rules and feel like that's what brings them closer to Christ then go for it but let others worship Christ their way.

    Here is some of the guidance, which is covered in the recommend interviews conducted by a bishopric member and a member of the stake presidency: "The temple garment is a reminder of covenants made in the temple and, when worn properly throughout life, will serve as a protection against temptation and evil. The garment should be worn beneath the outer clothing. It should not be removed for activities that can reasonably be done while wearing the garment, and it should not be modified to accommodate different styles of clothing. Endowed members should seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to answer personal questions about wearing the garment. It is a sacred privilege to wear the garment and doing so is an outward expression of an inner commitment to follow the Savior Jesus Christ." Answers to many of these questions are in the temple as you participate in the ordinances, but also in the General Handbook found in the Gospel Library app.

    It is hard for women as clothing does not cover the garments but you can always sew and design your own fashion. It is also hard when the sizing is off so you feel you have no choice, but hang in there. It could be in the future that we get patches to attach to underneath our clothing. Would streamline the entire garment production thing across cultures and climates. You grow into loving the Lord more than loving the world when you mature spiritually.

    You should never judge anyone? LOL! Life is about judging how you live and the choices you make. Much of that is based off of judging others. Who do I want to marry? What do I want them to be like? What about their hobbies and pastimes should they have? Like the sabbath observance. What kind of companion will she be? What kind of mother will she be? Can I live with how she is? Judgement is circular like many aspects of the gospel. Mercy. Kindness. The savior didn't say "Don't judge others." He said /Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again./ and went on to explain karma. I find it interesting how people hear what they want, like "Don't judge others" rather than what was actually taught. “Sometimes people feel that it is wrong to judge others in any way. While it is true that you should not condemn others or judge them unrighteously, you will need to make judgments of ideas, situations, and people throughout your life. … “Judgment is an important use of your agency and requires great care, especially when you make judgments about other people. All your judgments must be guided by righteous standards."

    @@mormonreject7564 The underwear defines an individual member's commitment (belief) to God (to the religion?). If they accept membership and claim membership, that bad member designation is a reasonable judgement. If a member doesn't attend church or pay tithing, seems fine to say they are a bad member. Not complying with basic tenants of the religion seems like a reasonable use of member classification (good or bad). If underwear is part of the membership expectation, then I don't see the issue. The self righteous argument is just a way of saying 'you are wrong' or 'I disagree with your beliefs.'

What I said was, /If they accept membership and claim membership (so don't abide by the voluntary commitment the member has made - the garment), that bad member (as opposed to a good member) designation is a reasonable judgement./ A bad member and a bad person are rather different distinctions. /but according to you I am a bad person/ Notice that is not what I said. Notice that many of your claims about my comments and positions are not 'what I said.' If you are accepting membership and not living up to basic member commitments, then yes, you are a bad member. If you don't read your scriptures and pray, attend church or pay tithing (as I already said), you are being a bad member. Are you a bad member? Allergic? @@harryhenderson2479 Prick? Which part? What I find interesting is the side tangent. I posted about judgement of others, not the garments specifically, and then Mormon Reject took it in a completely different direction than my comment about one line in the video. Not saying that is bad or inappriopriate, just trying to understand why he replied to my comment, out of all of the comments to this video. What I don't get is, why he is engaging with me? His points and my points are rather different. The best I can figure is that he doesn't like my point, or is wanting me to know that 'I am wrong.' I really don't see him explaining logically why I am wrong or what is right, why he is right. I write lots of dumb stuff. I attempt not to, but it still happens. Personally i think the garment has little to do with modesty and more to do with being a protection. There is nothing immoral about a naked body or showing your shoulders. It is only the lust and objectification of naked bodies that make it immoral. (Showing respect for our body is important though). While i don't think you should make any physical sewing alter to the sacred clothing, pulling them up a little higher so you can make your clothes fit isnt something i think God would bother condeming anyone for. I think he'd be happy you want to wear the garment in general. And i dont think they are any less of a protection if you do pull them higher up. They all fit different on different peoples bodies anyways. The fact that people are judging others for their underwear is kinda ridiculous. 😂

    I also think that what the church says about wearing it when it is "reasonable to do so" is really vague and very open to personal interpretation. The ultimate authority is God. But also you can’t go around saying rules don’t apply to you bc of Him (false). So I think God meets ppl where they’re at and helps them grow while still maintaining His law. Just like any other principle. Law is law, but people’s journey to meet it is their journey. Also people really are individuals and God understands this. To exercise or not in garments..maybe some people feel it’s disrespecting the garment getting it sweaty and others feel it empowers them to work harder. God understands our needs and psychological reactions and what would best help us on our unique paths. So the nitty gritty doesn’t need such passionate arguments imo. I’m not endowed btw.
