Well, Pastor Greg and Author Randy Alcorn break down if Christians should say a prayer to saints who have died before us. Along the way they also answer if our loved ones or friends in Heaven are watching us, praying for us and cheering us on!

Pastor Greg Laurie what about the scripture I think John 3:14 that says no man hath ascended to heaven but Jesus? I think that proves that no man or woman who has passed away has gone to heaven, but is in Sheol awaiting judgment day. (:

Pastor Laurie, what if instead of praying to the Saints, we asked them to pray for us? Since they're looking down on us, could we not ask them to pray for us in times of need as we ask earthly brothers and sisters to pray for us? I'm a Catholic and you basically described my belief. Except when we say we pray to the saints, it's not the same thing exactly as praying to the Lord, because when we pray to the Lord we see Him as the end, but when we ask a saint to pray, we expect them to go to Him with us in prayer. I dont think this contradicts the idea that Jesus is the one mediator any more than an earthly brother kr sister praying to the Lord for us on Earth does.

We can ask the saints in Heaven to intercede for us, just as many in the early Church sought the intercession of mere human beings like Peter and Paul and their prayers and handkerchiefs and shadows, rather than going directly to the One Mediator, Jesus Christ, and not even death can separate us! The power of Jesus Christ works through the intercession of others, and the prayers of the just man, and women, ( especially the Mother of God who moved her Son and Lord to perform His first public miracle on behalf of the wedding couple, even though His hour had not yet come), have great power in its effects as James says. Peace always in Jesus Christ our great and kind God and savior, He whose Flesh is true food and blood true drink! You are in my prayers! God bless you!

As a Catholic who was invited to the Harvest Crusade event by my Christian 12 step program sponsor, I was thinking of going because I thought it would be great to meet other Christians and feel the energy and love of a crowd that's on fire for Jesus, but my fear was that ecumenism would be non-existent and that there would be judgment and disdain toward Catholicism. I'm glad I saw this video and now know what Greg Laurie believes and preaches. What's more is the comment section; you guys really did it for me. Until we can all agree that we should focus on the similarities that make us all Christian rather than nitpick and be divisive, we're all missing the point. We get to the same answer, we just solve the problem given to us a little differently. I wish there was more love among Christians. I'll pray for you all. We Catholics pray for saints to intercede the same way we ask Mary the Mother of God to intercede. It's not worship, it's no different than asking a friend to pray for you. That's all. Prayer never hurts. It's either in His will or it's not meant to be. God bless.

“Praying to saints” is an intentionally wrong expression used by non-Catholics in order to accuse Catholics of worshipping human beings. Catholics do not pray to saints. They ask them to pray for them, in the same manner as you ask your friends to pray for you. No difference, other than this: if saints pray for you, you probably have many more chances to have your prayer granted by God than if your friends do the same thing. Saints are much closer to God than your friends are. Asking saints to pray for you not only is biblical: it’s the smart thing to do!

Thank you for your comment Jericho, I highly encourage my non-Catholic Christian brothers and sisters to reread Jerichos comment over and over again. We don't believe in praying to anyone, except for God. We do ask the Saints in Heaven to pray for us to God, and it is literally the same as us asking those here on earth to pray for us. We are just asking for their interecession that is all. The difference is they are there with God, closer to Him, and no they are not dead, if they are with God, They are even more alive than we are right now. They have been perfected by God now that they are in Heaven with Him. God Bless.

Well, I'll go with Paul's teaching over modern preachers'. Paul says believers should pray for others (1Tim2) and that the souls in heaven are aware of us on earth running our race of sanctification (Hebrews 11 into 12). So, we here on earth ask our bretheren to pray for us, me, you, and even our bretheren already in heaven. That's what praying to saints is about, not in worship of them, but to ask them to pray for us. As James says, "the prayer of a righteous man avails much", and people in heaven are perfectly righteous, therefore, their prayers for us can gain much for us. Pax Christi, Dan

Praying to the dead Luke 16:22-25 [22]Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels into Abraham's embrace. The rich man also died and was buried. [23]'In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his embrace. [24]So he cried out, "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames." [25]Abraham said, "My son, remember that during your life you had your fill of good things, just as Lazarus his fill of bad. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. 1 Samuel 28:15-16 [15]Samuel said to Saul, 'Why have you disturbed my rest by conjuring me up?' Saul replied, 'I am in great distress; the Philistines are waging war on me, and God has abandoned me and no longer answers me either by prophet or by dream; and so I have summoned you to tell me what I ought to do.' [16]Samuel said, 'Why consult me, when Yahweh has abandoned you and has become your enemy? Acts 9:36-40 [36]At Jaffa there was a disciple called Tabitha, or in Greek, Dorcas, who never tired of doing good or giving to those in need. [38]Lydda is not far from Jaffa, so when the disciples heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to urge him, 'Come to us without delay.' [39]Peter went back with them immediately, and on his arrival they took him to the upper room, where all the widows stood round him in tears, showing him tunics and other clothes Dorcas had made when she was with them. [40]Peter sent everyone out of the room and knelt down and prayed. Then he turned to the dead woman and said, 'Tabitha, stand up.' She opened her eyes, looked at Peter and sat up. John 11:41-43 [41]So they took the stone away. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said: Father, I thank you for hearing my prayer. [42]I myself knew that you hear me always, but I speak for the sake of all these who are standing around me, so that they may believe it was you who sent me. Biblically if your praying to anyone other then our heavenly Father is committing basically idolatry. John 16 25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. 26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. Unfortunately people have been taught unbiblical teachings that were man made but it's our job as children of God to direct them to the Father and ask in the name of Jesus. God bless you

So interesting, I was just studying this! Thanks for sharing. I agree we should not pray to the saints. In my opinion I think those who have died are asleep. I would feel so uncomfortable if those in Heaven are watching my life. I see it more like a marathon. Think about this. When someone runs in a marathon, the friends and family don’t watch the whole race. They only watch the ending. Paul explains it as a marathon not a tennis match. In my opinion those who have died are asleep as Jesus said they were and they will wake up to the trumpet of heaven, the dead in Christ will raise, and we will meet them in the air for the day of Judgement. This explains how there is a great cloud of witnesses because they will rise first. Although I could be wrong. :) just thought I’d share my thoughts. Again thanks Greg! Good timing.

I am sorry but if the dead can see us that is not the heaven the Bible speaks about. If they can see us they are not at peace knowing we are going through trials and diseases. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten. 6 Their love, their hate, and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun. 7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do.

Well Jesus talked to Elijah and Moses Matthew 17:1-3 [1]Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. [2]There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as dazzling as light. [3]And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them; they were talking with him. Luke 16:22-31 [22]Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels into Abraham's embrace. [26]But that is not all: between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to prevent those who want to cross from our side to yours or from your side to ours." [27]'So he said, "Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my father's house, [28]since I have five brothers, to give them warning so that they do not come to this place of torment too." [29]Abraham said, "They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them." [30]The rich man replied, "Ah no, father Abraham, but if someone comes to them from the dead, they will repent." [31]Then Abraham said to him, "If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead." Revelation 8:2-4 [2]Next I saw seven trumpets being given to the seven angels who stand in the presence of God. [3]Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. A large quantity of incense was given to him to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar that stood in front of the throne; [4]and so from the angel's hand the smoke of the incense went up in the presence of God and with it the prayers of the saints.

Praying to and worship are two different things. Prayer is a form of communication, I pray to our Lord Jesus all the time, I ask for guidance and perspective. I also Worship our Lord Jesus, who is King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. St Paul says: But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.-1 Thessalonians 4:13-14. The comparison of death to sleep is that a metaphor that reveals life after death. When you are sleeping you are alive, and just like Jesus who died ( fell asleep) shall resurrect (wake up), we too if we believe in Christ Jesus. The Saints in heaven have died ( fallen asleep) and through the power of Jesus Christ rise from the dead ( wake up ) and are participants in the Body of Christ. We are One, Holy, catholic ( universal), and Apostolic Church. Do not worship the Saints in heaven, but fear not your petition to them, who will seek the power and wisdom of Jesus Christ, "On earth as it is in Heaven". May all the Saints in heaven hear our cries and petition the Lord Jesus Christ and raise up new Saints on Earth. As a practicing Catholic, I appreciate the wisdom shared by Pastor Greg and continue to hold him in prayer. Peace to your spirit! Peace to your Spirit!

All through the Old and New Testament we can learn about the Angels interacting with humanity in some form or another. Jesus tells us that when we get to Heaven that we will become like the Angels, in fact, even greater than the Angels. So if you believe what the Bible says then there can be no argument that Saints can intercede for us just as the Angels do, because God said so. What more is there to discuss?

He knows the only way to God is through Jesus, yet he has gotten people to believe (in the masses), if you pray to Saint this and Saint that or to Mary that you will go to heaven. This might also explain why the catholic church had such a problem with child molestation (it's the devils work). The devil is loving it and people are still buying into it. Just my thoughts...

(Rev 8) The RCC has to prove that this is scriptural because of their many practices involving prayers to Mary, etc...I think Randy is 'streeeeetching' scripture to prove an unproven. Scripture says...Luk 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is "joy in the presence of the angels" of God over one sinner that repenteth....Not that there is joy in the presence of the believers of God. Clear--distinction. You will never find a prayer to the 'dead' in scripture--other than Samuel...and doing this via witchcraft is not what God would allow. God is the only one that hears prayers...period. Php_4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
