I can see both sides. On one hand, the puppetry is a very important part of the Dark Crystal. But on the other hand, (as you said) doing animation is ultimately much cheaper and less limited to what they can show. So honestly, I don’t care too much about how we are given more Dark Crystal on screen, as long as it’s well written.

For now, until the rights are owned by a different company, I'd be fine with a cartoon. I need some sort of new inspiration for my fanfic writing. I've had writer's block for what seems like forever, but may be only about 2 years or so. Not sure if I'd go 3d or 2d, but if it was 2d I wish Studio Ghibli would animate it. I think a richly diverse world such as Thra would look amazing if it were done like Spirited Away. If we're talking 3d, Disney (so long as they kept the LGBT+ representation and basic story from the book and show, preferably the book version though) or Dreamworks. If Don Bluth was still producing the 80s/90s style cartoon movies, that would also be a decent pick for 2d. And a cartoon would allow them to expand the amount of Thra we would get to see, they could do the cool part in book 3 with the chase to rescue Onica and show skekSa and her giant turtle beast of a ship Vassa, a lot more different creatures that would've cost so much to make as a puppet. There's so much more that can be done in the animation medium. Would I prefer another show like or a continuation of AoR? Abso-freakin-lutely! But it's been what, 5 years and we've gotten absolutely nothing as Netflix just sort of sits on the rights, and Henson has to twiddle their thumbs while they wait to be able to do something other than a ballet many fans around the world will never get to go to. This is what the Willow series fandom feels like about Disney. If they want to stop hemorrhaging money, then stop killing series and instead work on not spending boatloads of money on reshoots! I know there's more to all that financial and rights stuff, but I needed to vent! I thought we were supposed to get more comics! I want to know what happened to Mayrin to make her distrustful of the Sifa when she married one! I want to know if her daughters realize they're half-clans, I want to see my favorite sapphic couple of Tavronica and how they met! I want to see Rian and Gurjin when they first joined the Guard, and let's not forget Kylan's origin story! Arguably one of the most important, tied with Naia, characters in the books! And yeah, Naia! I want her story too, and maybe if my theory that the book and show take place in some of the alternate paths that Aughra sees in her timeline visions, show Naia and Amri and the whole gang in the future when Thra is healed. There is so much story to tell and while it is fun to fill the gaps in with fan fiction, having concrete canon expansion would be amazing in a fandom where it's difficult to figure out what is canon and what is not! Sorry for the ramble, but I just really miss new content for this series and I wish Henson had plenty of money and full control of the show again. Well, I think I've said enough now. Glad to have you back doing videos DG.

I agree that something is better than nothing, but puppetry is so important to this world, that I don't know if animation would work. Especially CGI, which ages very poorly unless the money is put into it, and that point, they might as well stay with puppetry. I'd rather wait longer for more handcrafted Dark Crystal, than have a cheaper cartoon rushed out.

As long as it still feels like the same universe. I wouldn't like it if the characters would make exagerated movements and facial expressions. In other animated series that would work. But there's something about how the camera works and the characters move in TDC, that they should try to try to translate to animation, which is difficult. Idk, it's hard to explain.

I don’t know. I can see both sides: On one hand, much of the Dark Crystal content we fans are all familiar with it in the puppetry. The puppetry is perhaps the number one thing that makes the movie and show so special. In the AOR teaser trailer, there was footage of Jim Hansen saying something like “it was the most work and it was the most challenging, but it’s perhaps the project that I am most proud of.” This is understandable, since the film took 3 to 5 years to make. That’s a long time, even back in the 1980s. But on the other hand, as precious as the puppetry is to us, it’s not everything. I remember the old Manga series called Legends of the Dark Crystal, and even though it was mostly just images, it still felt much like watching the movie because the characters were so well written and shown. This is saying something coming from someone who doesn’t usually enjoy reading. (Yes, I understand that the Manga is no longer canon, but that doesn’t change how great it is. I actually liked that version of SkekLach much better than the one on AOR.)

innovation is the word. I think an animated cast of characters superimposed on actual set photography or incorporating 3d effects in matte paintings. for example the 3d illusions in sidewalk art. doing that kind of thing could preserve the spirit of creativity this franchise runs on, however I'm pretty skeptical that it would be less expensive. frankly I can see the difference the price makes in the original and that is really what we are talking about.

The Bad Batch, the third Star Wars animated show (3 seasons), upped the quality of said animation beyond Clone Wars and Rebels. It seems that the best 'Star Wars' is in the animated stuff, more than live action it seems of late. If the animisation of Thra and its inhabitants were of that quality, love and care, I would for sure accept it, arms wide open😊. It would break my heart if it were CGI based. Of course my first and most heartfelt would be 'Puppetry, Yahy'. For the people who say, 'puppets are so expressionless', they haven't copped the side eye from Brea❤

An animated show would be good, but I don't want it continuing where we left off. The sudden change will be weird to me, and likely to newer fans who aren't this deep into the niche. Maybe a selection of side stories containing the Satirist or the Mariner? That would be fun. However I wouldn't just want CGI. I think you can get Dark Crystal-y while also using a unique animation style, like the angular-ness of Clone Wars.

If we're talking something like "Creation Myths", I wouldn't mind seeing that done in a kind of Rankin/Bass animation style similar to "The Hobbit" or "The Flight of Dragons". If we're talking about a prequel focusing on the UrSkeks, I think stop-motion animation would be ideal. It really depends on the story and the approach. Certain genres, certain tonal qualities, certain aesthetics complement each other better.

I think this show has biblical appeal to realism. if it were animated it might not have to. which is to say I am more open to a separate Dark crystal story a deep history?, a projection into thras distant future with a mixture of magic and technology out of Namcos Tales RPG series. the point is, age of resistance and the "high mass" of the franchise is pretty brutal and dark. in season two the skeksis achive total puppet devastation. saving the puppets for that is fine but the timeline is out there. because they don't want to release a new one until the people who saw the original have children old enough to watch it. merciless ehh.. well... germans... you know. still their take on a fantasy eco system needs more content. the gelfling world has to have more to it than imminent destruction. their is such a long timeline you could show the gelfling doing missions for the skeksi hunting with the hunter helping ohgra and the scientist do expeiriments, etc etc. just saying if it were animated I would not stick to the AOR timeline. furthermore I would use clay sets and backlit 2D elements to make it look different. the characters could be some sort of pixar star wars style CGI like the ones pictured here. but again the important thing is to work differently put CG vines growing up a clay tree. etc. the question is is that too expensive as well? does it all have to be CG?
