Every story has a morale. Explicitly discussing the morale helps train some kids to be aware of what messages are implied in media. I think such discussions help children think critically.

To be fair, He-Man was doing it before Sonic. GI Joe did it too, because knowing is half the battle! The one that really messed me up was Dino-Riders. Questar was working with Krulos (maybe?) at the end and it was never really confirmed or justified or clarified and everybody was fine to just overlook it and then the show ended. It's been nearly 40 years and that STILL bothers me!

If I remember right, Sonic Says basically existed because the US Government decided that cartoons needed to be more educational, and non-educational cartoons like Sonic loopholed their way into being considered educational by adding a two minute "moral" at the end of the episode. I doubt the writers were any more thrilled to have written it than kids were to have watched it.

Bravo!!! "The belly of the whale" is a mythical place, under water. Please don't mock Mr. Kotar.

Stories should 100% have morals. They shouldn't be lectures, but fiction is the best way to instill good moral values in us. Jesus himself knew this! That's why he told so many parables! Also I must urge to be wary of violent media with kids. I emulated everything I saw my videogame characters do. Thankfully my mother started me on Mario and Banjo Kazooie, and as I matured my interest in more mature games developed naturally.

Good stories are informed by morality, or at least a sense of right and wrong. When Matt and Nicholas discuss Aesop's Fables, it seems they object not to the story and its meaning, but to the "moral," the separate statement tacked on the end to explain the meaning.
