Should Managers Automate Their Plays?

Football is an incredibly complex sport, made up of dozens of different systems all interacting with each other at the same time, the ball is coming towards a player at a certain speed, meaning they need to adjust their body shape to stop the ball, but at the same time, they’re being closed down by the opponent, but then they need to consider their positioning on the pitch, and where they need to move the ball next to help their team progress. It’s raining, their playing away, they’re e losing 1-0. All these are factors to consider, and they influence every choice a player makes on the pitch. And as a coach, this is the biggest hurdle to overcome, how do you improve your team’s decision making? And one solution seems to be the idea of scripting.

you have one of the best approaches to explaining tactics in football. Combining animations with real football situations helps to cement the idea and gives a clear understanding of the tactic being used. Thanks for sharing and keep it up!

Manager like De Zerbi and Sarri are so amazing, the way that their teams play football is so mathematical and it works. It’s also beautiful to watch .

Personally I enjoy watching football with a blend of coded movements and creativity More coded movement in build up and protecting goal and creativity everywhere else
Very interesting video & I definitely learned a lot. This does give me certain moments to look when analyzing a game. Thank you for making this video. I do like a share a "scripting" story that could be probably different or same to the one that is explain in the video. Chris Ramsey, former youth coach at Tottenham & I believe he's currently at QPR, shared a story from Harry Kane's days in the academy. It's not about Kane, but on one or more games, he would tell Kane to let the opposition's center backs to launch long balls from the back. This is so Ramsey could see how the team's own center backs deal with long balls. Maybe after that, Ramsey could then see how the team build attacks, escape from opposition's pressure, etc. Thank you again for the video & have a nice week 👍
This is fantastic man. I'm a stupid American I've been watching for 5 years and still don't really understand tactics as much as I want to(absolutely love the sport though). This video really helped me a lot thank you, most other channels just run through all the numbers and expect you to know everything.

Brilliant video, thank you. I would love to see you expand on the scripted/coded aspects beyond the examples shown here. Perhaps a series of videos each tackling a typical phase scenario and you then cover the top 5 highest percentage/ most effective scripted patterns that typically occur in that scenario with the videos then moving through the game model phases in logical sequence much like when watching a brilliant team goal starting from the keeper and build up and then moving through the thirds to a finish but broken into separate videos bite sized chunks and with lots of variations. This would help me become better/faster at recognising typical scripted plays a team is using or noticing they are doing something different than typical and so perhaps working unscripted. I hope that makes sense, it could become a really good and useful series!
Amazing video! Probably one of the best you made, in my opinion.

Quality content! You've earned yourself a new sub. Keep up the good work
The way Ancelotti's Real Madrid breaks out of the defensive phase is very interesting, and different to Mourinho's a decade ago. The players bond with each other so well that they improvise on the spot. The first leg against Chelsea saw some great transitions. Now that there's Bellingham, Fran and Guler, it's gonna get better.
Speaking of improving the content, the small audio effects on the board play is just the thing that was missing from your presentations. Really great stuff.

The correct wording if you are using Cognitive Science as a mental model is "automatism". Automating actions rely on knowledge stored in long-term memory, pattern recognition (which is limitless). Automatisms reduce the cognitive load players experience when trying to "think" and use "decision-making" during an extremely demanding series of actions (a match). In matches, "thinking" is slow. Pattern recognitions and the accompanying practiced responses within a game model is what makes certain teams very successful when implementation certain models such as juego de posicion and juego de fases

Your comment: "however should be 10:14 avoided as much as possible during 10:16 development and in youth teams as the 10:18 main priority during these stages of 10:20 development is to increase decision 10:21 making and speed of though" .. has no scientific backing in the field of cognitive science research. The myth of "let them figure it out" is counter-productive for beginners (non-expert learners).

Adam clearly of 442 mentioned something like this when talking about England's new footballing philosophy. Already figured it out and translated it in Football Manager. However, Thanks for expanding it better and now I'm excited to try it on FM

Circuit based football or scripted play has it’s limits. Sarri tried it at Juventus and Chelsea he didn’t worked like it worked at Napoli or Lazio. However it’s one of the most beautiful style of football in my opinion.

At the end you stated that younger teams should not rely on scripting. It would be nice to see your ideas that could be supplementary for like a high school team, or something to that effect.
From which software are you getting your clip videos? Well done!
I loved this video🔥🔥🔥
Brilliant and simple
Great video. 👍My game model looks a bit different, when I classify the sub-phases. But overall quite similar. When I did my A-License in Germany, I can remember that we discussed this topic during the course. And the overall result was, that the defensive behavior during the defensive phases of the game is much more scripted, while offensive behavior relies much more on creative solutions and the ability to take own decisions especially if we talk about the final third, when it comes to creating chances and breaking through. Of course it is a multifaceted topic and it depends on different factors. At the end there are different ways to be successful, which makes the game so interesting in the end. 😊

Good day sir. Can I have your mail
Well done bro
In regards to youth not adopting a more structured approach to improve decision making. I feel it's important to have alignment between the youth team and the first team in the philosophy that you adopt. If the youth team plays in the same manor as the first team, transitioning up would be seamless.
J adore. Merci.
When I here the word "scripting", FIFA Games come to mind.

A better for this kind of play is Circuit.
Thank you and congratulations on your videos, they progressively get better! I would stay with your comment warning youth levels not to become scripted/coded. Although I do agree, I wonder if coding the youth player, SPECIFICALLY in the US, could have a more positive than negative effect on their development. As far as the Pro level, I believe both approaches should be utilized, in a fluid manner from the players perspective, and a strategic manner from the coaching perspective. Players would have the liberty to be creative but can fall back on "muscle memory" when needed; and, coaches can flip the script to deceive the opposing team tactics.
Thanks bro, now I can peruse my dream of being Liverpools manager 👍🏼
In my opinion, managers should teach "macro-principles" and then let the players interpret them freely. See Wenger's Arsenal or Ancelotti's Madrid, or even more Diniz's Fluminense. If you automate too much, you get sterile after a while.
can you guys make a video on ball playing center backs it would mean a lot

Too scripted, running the risk of copying American football. At the professional level and for the big money those players earn, shouldn’t they be able to resolve most situations themselves by mental or athletic means? One of the aspects of the beautiful game is creativity generated from athletic skills or soccer IQ…. why jeopardize these qualities?
@jan.kowalski
10 ай бұрын
@@silvioferraro5165 Statistics. 1 of 20 players is capable of creativity, the rest is not. People are not equal in their potential. In such cases you need a creativity from manager, to let him create rules to follow for those "dumber", yet fast or athletic, players.
Absolutely Awesomeness and joy isn't?
