I adore Sotomayor, but you have to take emotion out of it. Mehdi's got a point. If Biden loses, Republicans will get Thomas and Alito to step down and will replace them with very young justices, so that's TWO MORE seats 45 will have replaced on the SCOTUS. And he will pick someone young, so they'll impact policy for the next 20-30 years. If anything happens to Sotomayor - who travels with a doctor - that would be a 3rd justice 45 would added to the court in his term. You can't dismiss Mehdi's opinion here.

Justice Sotomayor has Type 1 diabetes. She can't take Ozempic to get rid of it, or any other medication. It requires insulin. It’s a hard pill to swallow but RBGs refusal to retire is, in part, why we now have a court that will be Republican majority for many years. All the most recent Republican appointed justices are under age 60 which means they will probably be there for 20 years. Not retiring at a politically advantageous time gives the opposition the opportunity to appoint another young justice that will be there for 20-30 years. It’s not personal and it’s a conversation worth having.

RBG can be excused because no one thought Trump would beat Hillary, all the polls pointed to her beating him handily. Sotamayor however does not have the same excuse with Trump ahead in many polls, and while she might be younger she is getting up there in age for someone with type 1 diabetes.

The problem lies in the fact that those judges are very greedy. Don't let girl boss feminism get in the way of other people's rights Edit Maybe my use of the term "girl boss feminism" is triggering, that's my bad, I apologize. What I mean is don't let an ideal like feminism or DEI, distract you from the game, and the point of the game is to win. RBG wanted to wait for Hilary to be president, then she would have stepped down and Hilary the "HBIC" or the girl boss would choose her replacement.

Whoopi DOES NOT come prepared and her lack of preparation is disgusting. Mehdi Hasan's statement was more in alignment with Alyssa Farah Griffin's remarks on the matter. I'm sure Sunny is aware that Whoopi is confused, but she chooses not to correct her on national TV.
This is what happens when you don’t inform yourself before discussing a topic. Sotomayor is the only justice that has requested to travel with a medic at all times. People don’t do that when it isn’t necessary. I believe Medhi has a point of concern that maybe people should wake up to if they don’t want a repeat of history with RBG.
Whoopi totally missing the point it seems; this man is concerned Sotomayer will retire/expire over the next few years and potentially give Trump/Republicans another right-wing judge.

The Democratic Party doesn't have the power to remove a republican Supreme Court Justice but they do have the power to adjust the Democratic ones who currently sit on the bench. Although Sotomayer is only 69, if Trump wins or the 2028 win (if GOP) and she falls ill, her seat will go to another GOP Justice for the next 40 years. It does make sense to think long term and position someone who is younger whilst we have a chance. She has done well for the Supreme Court, but Democrats can't think for the long game sometimes.
