Should I still be mad at Kevin Durant?

Спорт

Kevin Durant is a regular season MVP and a 2x NBA Finals MVP. He's one of the best basketball players of all time. Should we let go of the things that have kept us from appreciating him?

This will always make me feel weird about KD. He joined the team that EXPOSED his iso style and then when he won he admitted it didnt feel nearly as great as he wanted because he knows he sold out. When Lebron won in 2012 you could see how it meant the world to him. He won a title with his friends and was ecstatic.

@@nickpark101 that makes no sense. It's not kd vs gs or LeBron vs gs. It's OKC and Cavs vs gs. Kd scored 27 of 88 pts while LeBron scored 27 of 93 pts. Kd shot 10-19. LeBron shot 9-24. Westbrook shot 7-21 19 pts. Kyrie shot 10-23 for 26 pts. Kyrie was the one who took and made that clutch iso 3 out of a timeout. Kd also played overall better defense. Not just 1 block but consistent defense. How TF is an opposing forward (Draymond) getting 32 and 15 in game 7. Kd was on a team where he's the only guy who can shoot outside shots and gs actually had their shot blockers healthy that game. LeBron can surround himself with a lineup of shooters with Kyrie, Smith, RJ, and Love. Plus no shot blockers as bogut was out that game. Game 7 wcf kd scored 12 pts in the 4th. Game 7 finals LeBron scored 11 pts in the 4th. Mind you he got gifted 3 fts as festus ezeli committed a stupid foul on a 3 attempt. Then LeBron got festus on him again for another 3. The thing about Durant for me is that he was that he really wasn't the engine of the team. Sure, he was the leading scorer, but Curry generated the offense, and you can see that in how he was guarded compared to Curry. He would be left open in the finals because the Cavs wanted to double Curry (who would still average a 26.8 near triple-double in that 2017 finals) and that allowed Durant to be efficient. I don't care about the move. What I care about is that I can't say it was his team, and that more than anything else, hurts his legacy.

Back then and even now when healthy KD is the 2nd best player in the world, but when Steph blew up winning back to back MVPs, one of them first unanimous, making 2 finals winning the first won after the Warriors 40 drought, ppl weren’t just saying he’s the 2nd best player in the world but their were ppl saying he’s the best in the world even over LeBron. So he didn’t have Bron to try to beat over, he also had Steph who was challenging him. And for him and Russ to choke him and for KD to join Steph who was challenging him for best or even 2nd best player just doesn’t feel right. It's frustrating how narratives can often alter the way we actually see basketball. I keep hearing that Durant became this incredible transcendentally efficient player in Golden State, but only a few talk about the way defenses could handle him in OKC compared to Golden State. Sure he got better, he became way more engaged difensively and a way better two way player. But offensively it was more or less the same player, a player that became way less efficient when a defense can load up on him. In golden state when he was playing without Curry his efficiency stats dropped to his OKC level. He still is the amazing scorer and good-not-great playmaker that he was in OKC. And now, once people will see those stats drop again in Brooklyn, I will hear main stream media say that he isn't the same after the injury.

And (gotta say this because I've heard the comparison and I just don't buy it) KD to the Warriors was NOT like LBJ to the Heat. For two reasons-- 1) The Cavs sucked, and the roster around LeBron was NOT going to win it all. The Thunder were a legit good team, and with some decent luck had a chance to win a championship every year. 2) The Heat pre LeBron were an OK team, 47-35, 5th in the east. The Warriors pre-KD, well everyone knows about that team. Lebron didn't join a historically great team, one that could have likely won multiple championships without him. The 2016 Warriors were already historically stacked, adding KD just made the following 3 years boring. I mean, I'm not happy at all that he or KT got hurt. Really, I'm never happy to see athletes get hurt. But we all knew that was the only chance any team other than the warriors had a chance of winning. Miami with LBJ only went 2-2, only one of those championships felt inevitable. The 2013 and 2014 Spurs were an equally good team, and the 2013 series was the second best series of the entire decade (we all know which was the first).

Anyone would do the same thing is his position" like OOOH okay, well if he WANTED a ring then that changes everything? Fans talking shit about you and disrespecting your "legacy" is kinda just the price you gotta pay if you make the decision he made imo and it's such a small one at that- i can't begrudge anyone still being salty.

If your an OKC fan same thing. He did so much to help their community and they were lucky to even have him when he should've been in Seattle. They've never in their history won a playoff series without him which other franchise can you say that about?

Man, I gotta say, as a Warriors fan, I could not care less if people didn't like Durant coming or not. I sat through some of the worst teams, dealt with some of the worst owners, and was assaulted by some of the dumbest front office moves growing up. When Steph brought us back to the promise land, it was one of my happiest moments as a sports fan in general. The fact that I got to see Kevin Durant play basketball in a Warriors jersey with my own eyes, is something I will always treasure. I get why people might be upset, but using Durant showing up as tainting the legacy of a team that did so much, is BS to me. Y'all can stay mad if you want, but i'm confident even if we didn't have him we would have one at least one more of those championships, if not both.

Guess what? It will always taint the legacy of the warriors, KD, and Steph. All we're left with is what-ifs. It is very likely that Steph would've won a ring even if KD hadn't joined, and it's almost certain that he would've gotten a finals MVP. But KD did join the Warriors, Steph didn't win a ring against a healthy opponent without KD, and he still doesn't have a finals MVP. I can completely understand your perspective, and I can respect it. But to pretend like it won't forever taint the legacy of the 2010's Warriors is simply naive. KD joining robbed you of any chance at making a claim as a dynasty. The team was simply unfair. To add a top 2 player to a team that won 73 games is a topic for a 2k what if video, and it's still hard to believe that it actually happened. I'm glad that you got to see your franchise succeed, and I agree that seeing KD playing on the Warriors is a generational moment, but it cost so much. It ruined basketball for 2 years. Took the suspense out of the game, and made it a joke.

Simply put, durant's 2 championships are worth less than any nba championship in nba history. He joined the one team in the west he couldn't beat (that also happened to be one of the greatest teams ever assembled) and then showed that his presence on the team was largely inconsequential bc they still won a championship after him with a much less talented roster. KD's legacy is that of an insanely talented hooper who in his pursuit of building a GOAT level legacy, made sure that he would never be regarded in such a conversation. He is the NBA's icarus. Its strangely poetic

Arguing that the Cavs pulled off "the greatest upset in history" ignores a key event: the post-game-4 upgrade of Draymond Green's foul from a double technical (LeBron stepped over Draymond, Draymond hit LeBron) to a flagrant that resulted in Draymond's suspension. If that didn't happen, it's likely the Warriors finish it off in 5. But that game 5 without Draymond flipped the whole momentum of the series, and with later-game injuries to Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala--key pieces of the Warriors' always-underappreciated defense--the series would probably have gone very differently. That being said, I think we also have to compare a Warriors-joining Durant to a hypothetical Durant who stayed in OKC and never won a ring. Is he more respected in the latter situation? I don't think so.

i think most of the hate came from his statement when he signed with them back in 2016, taking the hardest road. just admit that you wanted an easy ring, don't mask it by saying joining a 73-9 team is difficult. he thought people would love him despite his decision, he thought he wouldn't be villainized. he even called his agent after the announcement backlash saying "why the fuck did you let me do this to my life?", he wanted everyone to praise him. if you signed with the warriors, embrace the villain role and run with it, just like lebron with the heat. after the meltdown in 2011, he stopped caring and listening to the noise. KD cared way too much about what people said about him, he couldn't handle the pressure. you don't see lebron out here with burner accounts on twitter trying to argue with teens online. he doesn't care, he doesn't need their validation.

I disagree if Westbrook was the only thing holding him back and he didn't need Golden State to win why not go to literally any other team. the most disappointing thing about him going to Golden State was that I believed he was talented enough to beat them. Now we'll never really know if he could have done it or not. KD wanted to prove he was the best player in Basketball that he wasn't second best to Lebron, but because he joined that Warriors team Lebron was able to do something Kevin Durant was never able to do defeat the Warriors.

An unanimous MVP and defensive player of the year and a 6th man of the year candidate. Harrison Barnes and Bogut were playing the best basketball of their careers, so on and so forth.
