Should I Slap Chop or not?! Painting 10th Edition - Leviathans | Tyranids
This week we're smashing out the new Warhammer 40k box - Leviathan. I wanted to test out what's the best looking, fastest version of the Tyranids I could paint, so here we try out Slap Chop vs Not. What do you guys think? What are your plans for the box?

The final one done after the video, those highlights make all the difference. Prefer a black base over brown. Get those deep shadows.
Part of the beauty of "slap chop" is that you can get them to a decent table top standard easily and start playing. BUT you can also go back later and add some extra work to bring them up another notch.
@WatchItPaintIt

That’s a really good point actually. Should probably mention that more. That you can smash out an army and get playing. But there is NOTHING to stop you improving them after they are ready enough to play! Can add more highlights in between games! Etc. thanks for pointing this out
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I think the dry brushing at the end was totally worth the time, and I’ll be doing that after Speedpainting them! You’ve gained a new sub here ❤
The third model. It looks crisper with the added highlight. Awesome paint job man!

It’s definitely a step up. I think if im batch painting I could swallow the small amount of extra time. Think it was well worth it. Thanks!!!

@@WatchItPaintIt I'm really struggling to hit some of the areas of the model while drybrushing. What techniques do you use to reach those tight spots? How many layers of white drybrush did it take on that 3rd model?
@WatchItPaintIt
11 ай бұрын
@@Kristophtehrussian use a small brush, I have a tiny one from Rosemary and Co, but really my technique here was just to do the easy to reach bits! I really didn’t put much effort in, a single pass, just where was easy! Just gives the illusion it’s better highlighted :-) which is perfect for a big horde army
I prefer how the bone looks more textrued on the brown slap chop but prefer the brighter purple plates on the white one, so the hybrid the style of the Third works to get even bigger contrast between the two areas
I would probably prefer the slapchop one with the bonus entry chitin drybrush (as it makes it really pop) :D. Still pondering the scheme for when I get my Leviathan box. At first I was 100% going to paint them in the Leviathan scheme, but that certainty slowly eroded over time. But I'm sure that I'll slapchop the hell out of the little buggers, though
What are those little crystals that you have on top of every paint so you can color them?
Great video as usual! I see a Watch it Paint it video with speed paints and click Watch + Like!

Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed
Tried SC a few times, but never liked it, so I'm either sticking to white/light grey or much more likely a zenithal. Favourite must be the white one, it looks cleaner on screen. White + the 3rd's carapace is a winner.
whats the contrast paint equivalent to Howling sand?
May there be a benefit to applying a "Gloss Varnish" on the Primer before applying the Speed Paint? Will this create more contrast between the peaks and valleys of the model? Will Speed Paint adhere to the Gloss Varnish? (I was also thinking of trying a (WhitePrimer with Black Panel Liner) and then Speed Paint). Your response and thoughts are welcomed.

Think now there’s 90 colours I won’t make it stupid names for them all any more :D
I prefer the third model, it has more contrast and feels less flat than the pure white. Great idea to try the brown primer, looks really natural I think. Have you considered games like Core Space (sci-fi) and its newer cousin (late pledge at the moment) Maladum (fantasy)? They're a great hybrid between board games and skirmish games, but are all-in-the-box kind of games. Worth investigating 😉 Great video again!

Thanks man! Noooo I haven’t heard of them. I’ll have a look! I keep wishing GW would make some board games that I’d be interested in. I wonder if them and CMON could ever make a Zombicide 40k!
I like the brighter, non-slap chop version better, with the exception of the darker shade to the purple carapace. I think with another coat or two of the purple, Mr. White would be perfect, but that's me. I have no idea but I'm actually going to paint my 'nids, but I'm enjoying watching folks do theirs!
@WatchItPaintIt

It’s so close and if I had done a quick dry brushing on the carapace on the brighter one… I could easily have preferred it too. Also to note I thinned down which lightened up the purple! Perhaps just not thinning it was correct in this instance!
@knabseraph

More coats of contrast would darken the colour for sure, but it would reduce the contrast between the recess, midtone and edges alot.
Always look forward to your vids. Left one or last one !!! Dry brushing wisely is great. Slop chop is like putting ketchup on lobster. A total waste and it is very obvious the crap slop chop when done.

Thanks the kind words and the feed back! I’m finding myself loving slap chop in some situations. I didn’t dislike it here but the none slap chop one is so close, what’s the point I love your analogy! :D
Hmm, I kinda like the way the 3rd one came out. The highlights pop out more and the recesses are very dark. Also, is it me, or they kinda planned the new sculpts to be more accessible than the old where you need to literally do kung-fu poses to reach the inner side. Wonder if I can do the same for my color scheme (which is black skin, bone-colored talons and red carapaces).
@WatchItPaintIt

I think I would try a zenithal spray doing this again. The amount of dry brushing was a little time consuming and I think the spray would give a good head start. Is your colour scheme one of the factions? I’d like a red carapace army
@OMGYama
Жыл бұрын
@@WatchItPaintIt Hmm that's a very good idea, zenithal is by far the quickest way to make speedpaints pop the highlights. Also, I don't really remember if it was a sanctioned subfaction of the hive fleets or not. But I did it simply because I wanted to create a xenomorph like hive fleet (hence the very black and shiny flesh) but took liberties here and there (the bone-colored talons and red carapace) just so the colorway is varied.

The carapace was Hive Dweller Purple mixed with Speedpaint medium 7:2. On the third miniature I did a very quick dry brush on Toxic Boils on the edges too
Honestly, I think the Army Painter quickshades would have functioned better here than the speed paints. Other than the lovely purple used for the carapace.

This makes me happy. Continue your good work.
Mr Brown is better than Mr White but of course Mr Bonus is better than the other 2. It's actually pretty close to the way I prime and paint my minis. I like the more subtle shadows using browns instead of black.
Just a tip if you have a airbrush, prime the model black. and after that, spray with a white ink from a 45 degree angle, let it dry, and then spray once again directly from above. This will create a very smooth transition from complete white to black. It will make your models look like they took 10 hours to paint, even tho they took you maybe 1 hour.

I do have an airbrush! I find the level of effort too high :-( but perhaps with practice it will become quick and easy so I should stick at it? Or maybe my airbrush sucks. Or I suck :D
@qzl9

@@WatchItPaintIt i usually never do it to a single model. I prime a bunch, and do it in batches, spille dont have to start up the airbrush for ever model. When you have done it 10 times, you have perfected it, its really easy! When using inks, the blends form naturally since they are more transparent. Give it a try !

Thanks for the advice. I’ll keep trying!
Honestly, I think certain parts look better in certain ways. I prefer the skin with a lighter drybrush, gives better definition IMO...but I like heavy for the carapace, it allows those edges to stand out better. So I'd say the best bet (if you don't want to do what I do and drybrush highlights afterwards) would be to lightly drybrush the whole model...then go heavy drybrush on any areas of carapace.

I agree with you. Save myself a few minutes on these guys and just go white
Slapchop looks like a Wast of Time for my when using Speedpaint. I mean the Color Creates Highlights and Shadow! So why i should spend Time to make it by myself? And at the End it looks the Same. The only Different thing what i like on the Withe SlapChop is the Abraded looking edge of the Chitin. But that is the Only thing.
Don't you really want 2 layers of drybrush for the slapchop? A heavy light grey and a very light touch white for the highlights? That's what gives you the highlighting effect with slapchop.
@WatchItPaintIt
Жыл бұрын
Yeah. But I’ve pretty much scrapped the middle layer. I found it makes very little difference (to me personally). I also think it depends on the mini and the effect you want. I’m going to do some soon where I use three layers again but it’s because I think the mini needs it

"Termagant" is the name of a god that medieval Europeans believed Muslims worshipped. The origin of the name is unknown. Shakespeare co-opted the name as a term for a bully and now it's an old-fashioned equivalent of calling someone a "shrew."
