Should I Save or Scrap this Rust Free XJ40 with a Bad Head Gasket? You decide!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This Daimler (Jaguar) XJ40 has a blown head gasket. Otherwise it's a pretty nice and rust free early XJ40. Should I save it? Or should it be a parts car? You decide!

It does look too good to scrap. Saving it would make an enjoyable series.
This is a true revival project unlike the previous XJ40 project. I’d like to see this car back on the road and would like to see how you restore the woodwork

I agree. Also will help anyone with an AJ6 engine so lots of XJS users too.
My vote is save. I love these cars (albeit the later 4.0 model maybe just a little more 😅) and way to many were neglected and scrapped in the past, pretty much just because they were simply not old enough to be treated like classics. Especially a rust free one (and a Daimler no less) would be pretty sad to see parted out or scrapped because as you said, their problem is mostly the body and rarely the mechanics. My own XJ40 is currently off the road in the shed patiently waiting for me to fix the crumbling drivers side sill and footwell...
Would make a good mini-series on your channel. Assuming you can find a brake m/cyl, headlining, driver seat squab repair, skim cyl head, etc… Go for it!!
It sounds to me that you are hoping your audience will want you to save it!! My vote would be a resounding “yes”! Head gasket and skim video would be cool as well as videos on seat repair and the woodwork. Also the brake conversion you mention sounds interesting! Go for it!! ✊
This could be a stunning 40!! A rare black over cream combination is gorgeous. Rust is the biggest killer of these cars, and if you have one with minimal rust, you're ahead from the start. I'd definitely watch and be engaged with a resto series on this.
You don't have to ask, Adam. When you started taking about sourcing a side trim kit we all knew you are not scrapping it.😊
It would be interesting to see head repair, head liner replacement and Woodwork repair.
Save it for sure. Daimler variants are becoming rare now. The headliner isn't a major headache to do, and head gasket no problem for you.
Looks like a pretty simple and basic repair. No rust, so no reason to scrap it, that would be sacrilege .
Too good to scrap I would enjoy watching you restore the rough diamond 😊
She is deserving of your tender love and care, beautiful color spec and wheels . . . You will do a lovely job on her !! ❤
Hi Adam, it has to be saved. Well worth it.
I personally preferred these with the rectangular headlamps (controversial), so if you can save it without too much expense, do it! Otherwise, flip it to someone who'll take it on.
I am subscribing right now because I want to see this car saved. Would like to see you save it and then daily drive it for 12 months. Make an extended series of videos updates on running costs and total cost to drive for a year. That would be very consistent content for your channel.
Please keep the XJ40, I Have a 1989 XJ40 Sovereign & would like to see any videos on it, changing the head gasket would be very interesting.
Yes Please! Another XJ40, I love these unloved Jags so much.
Looks like a good project for us to watch Adam. I vote to save it.
An XJ40 V12 would be the ultimate keeper but I like this one too and it would make an excellent daily driver.
I would suggest saving and restoring. It is a nice project to see and come to life. 🍷🎶😎
It is a Daimler, and no rust, love to see it running again. 😊
Hi Adam, I’d LOVE to see a series on this Daimler XJ40. It’s a very solid example and therefore way too good and rare to part out IMO. I own a 1990 2.9 Sovereign and seeing you resurrect your XJ40 would be really useful for me to learn more about my car. I hope you make this a winter project, as you say, it’s too good to scrap. Love your channel BTW!
Save it. XJ40’s are just lovely to drive. To me it looks like this car has the really rare sports package, meaning different lower suspension, different steering rack and the 16” alloys. My dad bought a new XJ40 with the 4.0 liter engine with the sports package. Perfect for the autobahn. One day I will get one for myself
I also would like to see thisJaguar repaired and saved. I will definitely watch all your vids on this car. I think it is very interesting to see more on the XJ40 and also on the X300/308.
Fix it and make a series of video on how to change the head gasket! It is too nice to scrap. Otherwise, I may be interested in buying the center armrest to put on mine.
I’d save it. Not maybe from a financial point of view but those engines are usually very reliable, but no engines are without water pumps!! Great content as always👍
Save it Adam. You know you want to 😊
Seems pretty much a bolt together fix. If the body is sound, it's a no brained to fix up up. Definitely worth saving .
XJ40s are cool. You should save it! And I should go hunting for my own XJ40 project
Save it plenty of good engines out there in rough cars, especially in the UK.
I think the car is worth saving. It would be a series I would watch.
Well Adam, I think you need a cost accountant to do an analysis. All depends on the cost of fixing it up, and the potential sale price. But, it would be a fun project to watch and see what magic you could perform on this Jag. The wheels are really cool.
Definitely work your magic on it ,it's to good to break.
I would definitely watch this series. I'm still unhappy the previous XJ40 went so come onnnnn..!
It depends on your money, space, and time. If you have them, it looks like a great project. The exterior is remarkably good, considering what happened to the interior.
I had one of these, a really clapped out Jaguar Sovereign, but it was such a nice car. Although it's not going to set an auction on fire, I would love to see this one brought back to life.
Looks like it needs hundreds, if not thousands, of little things fixed, along with the "big" thing of a new head gasket/valve job. It's got 90,000+ miles on it. Only a Jaguar XJ40 would have rust starting on the top of the body instead of in the sills/fender bottoms. I vote to send it to the scrap yard!
Hi Adam. Really enjoy your channel....The Daimler is too good to scrap.....I think you should fix it ....& then sell it on for a profit....I would be interested to watch the outcome. 👍
I definitely vote for…. Let’s save it !!! At least let’s give us a chance to save this Jag ! They look so very gorgeous on the road.
This is well within your scope Adam, definitely worth you fixing it up. Content would be great.
Save it, I’ve seen way too many like these get scrapped in Belgium
Ive starting loving these ooder jaguar and daimler cars since finding your channel. Id love to see the old girl brought back to life and your the man to do it 👍
I agree with the commenters below that this is too nice a vehicle to part out or scrap. There aren't any issues with this car that are beyond your prodigious talents, Adam. 😁
Great a XJ 40 is back . Hopefully you do this project !!
Go for it, Adam. And I’d be interested to see yo do the wood too.
Probably worth saving. Maybe fix it, auction it, and put the money towards the trading up series?
Please save it. I would like to see work on a straight six and apart from anything else I love the dash!
0:12 0:47 I think it would be interesting to see you do the car up, would definitely watch it if you go ahead.
Agree with the rest, way too good to part out so go for it Adam
Save for sure. Love these 80’s XJ40-models. Looks like it’s really well kept. The rust free ones are becoming rare

They’re great cars
That's a pretty quick and easy head gasket.
I don’t see too much value in parting it out… there can’t be that much demand now surely ? It’s a lovely black Daimler, definitely worth you sorting the mechanicals / bodywork over the winter and at least letting a new owner sort out the cosmetics at their leisure. It’s a good opportunity to tackle one of these engines… if you are still planning to convert a fire damaged partially stripped Series I XJ6 into a V12 then fixing an overheated AJ6 should be a breeze for you !
Woud make good series for sure! If anything I think it at least worth taking the head off considering its rust free
It’s a great looking car and worth saving for the bodywork alone
These XJ40 are special and deserves to stay alive!
Definitely a resto project. Love to see it brought back to life.
Save it. Very interested in how you will handle the wood replacement / refinishing.
I would say try to save it. There are technical details to solve, and you are certainly the one to do it. The question boils down to financials in my mind. Perhaps a series with an initial assessment and estimate, then the actual repairs and costs. Last would be the ultimate end state, auction / sale / other? This may help many of us trying to determine if our potential projects are viable. Thanks again for your great videos, I learn something every time.
Nice XJ40 - Daimler model too. Worth saving if you can. 👍
It's to good to part out, and as it's a Daimler it's worth saving
You can change the head gasket on that inline six in a few days of not too bad a job, and you can resolder the ECM. I think that is why you XJ40 was intermittantly shutting down from intermittant contacts in the circuit board. 40 years of electronic service tells me that.
Adam I would love to see you get it back great looking Jag.
That looks it has the makings of a decent smoking about car doesn't need to be perfect,it's a xj40 after all, get the head off ,have it skimmed and pressure tested and then make your mind up ,good luck either way it's good content for the channel.
One digit from being a fantastic number plate.
Do the head gasket, get the mot done then see how you feel about it. It will make a good series.
Please another xj40 series!!!
I owned two xj40s in the 90s.i enjoyed them so much and your one has the original early clocks which I preferred and the lattice alloys which I preferred on my 4lt s
I like these earlier dashboards with the electronic display. Worth saving just for this!
Definitely save! The bodywork is so good.
The car is probably worth saving but personally I am more interested in the v12,s which l restor and you have helped in several projects
I would like to see it saved. But can we can an update on your early production XJ-S project?

I think his early XJ-S is still at the body shop. But it may have changed since then.
Definitely a doer upper, it’ll be great to see the journey of it being fixed and back on the road.
Je vote pour la série, ça m'intéresse un joint de culasse sur la XJ40.
It's to good to scrap so great content for the channel fixing it up 👍 Add this to the trading up series, give the profit to your wife. Doesn't she want a F Type V8 now? 🤔 😊
Fix it Adam. You can’t save them all, but this one looks like a good candidate.
LOVE TO SEE YOU AT LEAST FIX THE HEAD CASKET AND THE BREAKS SO IT IS SAFE THEN USE IT IN THE TRADE UP PROGRAM
That's a nice looking car, save it, please))
I would watch your videos regardless so I can’t say that adds to your calculations
Recommend saving it, still a great car and you have a good base to start from. Too good to scrap.
I´d love to see restoration videos of this car. Perhaps you can find a 4.0 liter XJR engine for it.
Definitely worth saving and will make great channel content.
I'd Watch, treat it as part of your trading up series and add any profit made be it £10 or £1000 to that fund when you sell the ADO16
Yes buddy have a go it’ll make an interesting series 😊🏴
Interesting project, thanks for the video Adam.
Seems to good to break it and these early XJ40 are becoming increasingly rare, they just rust away. The engines are usually bulletproof except for the head gasket issues. They are known to leak at this mileage...
It's not the best jag model, even if its looks were improved a bit when the head lights were changed to two separate units. But even so, its a jag and there are too few left to waste. Since there is so little rust and the body is straight , and since you have the access to parts and specialist labour, then my thought is that you should restore it. Maybe not to concourse but to the economic limit of the next enthusiast owner. Go for it !
A keeper with no rust.
I agree would be a great and interesting project Adam
I think i would look for a rusty XJ40 (most of them) with a decent engine (4.0 by choice) and make 1 good car from two. A rust free shell is well worth saving
My view Its too good to part!!. If It was mine i would save her, you have the expertise why not? A black Daimler XJ40 was the pinnacle at the time, just beautiful . It does certainly looks like its fallen into a sad life but all fixable at minimum cost.. Can't believe it was driven it without a water pump, who does that? I will be looking forward to a series if you do it!
Being a rarer early XJ40 Daimler with the digital dash I would definitely save it - plus I happen to think the 3.6 litre AJ6 engine is better than the later 3.2/4.0 or even AJ16, has more character and is a bit more free revving. Taking on the refurb of the woodwork yourself would be a good addition to the channel as well!
I'd love to see the head gasket replaced or the engine replaced. It looks much too good to part out.. (Phil)
Would be great watching you save this one.looks a decent car with the headgasket done.
I'm not the biggest XJ40 fan, but it doesn't have any rust. I say save it. I needs a little work, but a head gasket is a pain, but not unmanageable. Mechanical stuff can be repaired; it's rust that is the real killer. I vote to keep one more Jag on the road.
Early xj40s are better building than later ones....yes its True. The innerwibgs pre v12 don't rot so badly. Looks like the Tokyo by night dash is working which is a rarity too. Engines esp 3.6 are bulletproof. You cam buy an engine complete for nothing. Brakes, are easy to fix. Just disconnect the, self levelling and replace with springs and shocks. Save it
Engine swap for a good AJ6 would be the cheapest & easiest option IMO. You could be cheeky and try that head-gasket seal stuff first, which is about €30 or so. Far too good to sell for spares.
I’m biased I would well back a rust bucket! Save it!
Adam, in my opinion,a decision can be made based on how much these cars bring if they are running. For ex. if you spend $2000 to fix it and it will bring $3000 when sold, then it does not make economic sense (given your time and effort). Parting it may also bring more money, but given the work involved (and parts storage!), it may not be worth it..
I already love this car.
Lovely car. Please repair it. I will watch 👍
