Thanks Julian...as a musician who was going to hang it up last year after having severe tinnitus & hyperacusis, I sincerely thank you for being a life saver. I speak your name often to my crew here in Minneapolis USA and will be involved in future speaking campaigns that deal merge stress/depression with tinnitus. I have an interview Fri with NPR (your BBC) and plan on mentioning your name as you've helped so many. Thanks for your books and videos. They are great tools! Keep up the great work! Thanks Mike

I’m a professional musician who has had tinnitus for a decade. I have taken every precaution to protect my hearing once I began hearing the ring (mild hearing loss). Recently had a huge spike after an anxiety attack and dove into some musician forums filled with negativity. These people who aren’t doctors insist that having tinnitus is the end of one’s career as a musician, that loud noise exposure will make it worse even with hearing protection. I refuse to listen to these people and give up the very thing I live for. If I had listened to them a decade ago when I initially got my tinnitus I wouldn’t have pursued the thing I love most. My tinnitus did NOT get worse if I wore hearing protection or played at reasonable volume, and I’ve played hundreds of shows, rehearsed countless times and have practiced for countless hours. However, due to my recent spike I’ve fallen into the darkest catastrophe spirals I’ve ever experienced. Thanks to Julian’s videos I have been able to pull myself out of them. I’ve learned from this recent spike that my anxiety is directly linked to my tinnitus volume. As I calm down and heal (highly recommend meditation) it is slowly improving and this content has a lot to with it. Hang in there y’all. Thank you.

This video is a HUGE help. I saw an audiologist last spring, to get custom molded plugs. In spite of her telling me she was one of the recognized experts in the area, she never would answer my question directly as to whether or not I should keep playing live music, or if it was time to retire from it. So this is a relief and some comfort. The problem I'm having, is that the ringing/whistling gets louder for a few days after a gig. I keep my plugs in the minute I step into the club, until the time I get in my car to leave. Why is it that even with 25 dB reduction from custom fit plugs, that this happens? Fortunately I already reasoned out something from another video you did. Tinnitus couldn't be simply a result of permanent damage to hairs/nerve cells, if it can vary in loudness and the type of sound. So even though I understand it won't get worse permanently, it still causes concern for some reason. I just don't want to be forced to quit performing. If that happens, I want it to be because I chose to on my own. Thanks for all you do. I'm glad I discovered your videos.

I’m surmising but it could be adrenalin /stress from performing and /or vibration from the instruments / amps hitting the inner ear. After all T is physiological as well as psychological. Pink noise played under the T volume through the night on Airtubes has reduced my noise as it retrains the brain not to hear it. In the morning I notice it not as loud as i went to sleep.

@@beep6410 I stopped using it last year and just got used to sleeping without it. Perhaps I should have kept using it and I’d be a lot better by now. But what I also discovered is that my issue is most probably due to decades old neck whiplash which resurfaced during a dance routine in my living room during Covid to reduce stress. X-rays show C4/5 subluxated and I’m having Atlas Orthogonal adjustments and also PRP prolotherapy. It’s early days yet. Peter Studenik in his videos and book talks about how pink noise trained his brain not hear his T. He eventually recovered while also reducing stress by exercise, holistic diet, changing jobs and divorcing. Because of your comment to me I’ve decided to go back to listening to white noise for at least 8 hours a day as Peter recommends and try using nature sounds like rain and wind n maybe soft music instead of pink noise as I’d read that they are also just as effective. Anything that turns the brain away from the sound and helps to rewire the pathways so it is no longer audible. I’ve tried everything else and the noise did go down after months of doing Liam’s anti inflammatory diet, fasting and cold showers. I stopped because of weight loss (and Xmas!) and the noise came back but also I’ve since discovered I have subluxation in my upper spine and the spine effects neural pathways through the body so many illnesses can happen if the body is out of alignment. T is one of them. Many ppl have had success with upper cervical chiropractic and both u c chiros I saw said they believe my issue is due to my spine being out of whack. So, it’s trial and error and everyone is different. I hope you find you solution soon. In the meantime I’ll share my one years research of info with you here: Tinnitus Explanation and Links From what I’ve researched on the internet through articles, videos and comments I have discovered that tinnitus or ringing in the ears can be the result of noise, head, physical and/or emotional trauma, high blood pressure, dental problems like bruxism (teeth grinding) or TMJ (jaw clenching) at night while sleeping, excessive ear wax or ear infection or other ear related issues, stress and anxiety, certain medications, Epstein Barr or other viruses, EMF’s from WIFi/5G or upper cervical subluxated Atlas and Axis (C1 and C2) neck related issues and even chemicals from hair dyes, personal care products and cosmetics, certain allergies to foods, Salicylates, oxalates, lectins (otherwise known as Plant Paradox), bad diet or nutritional and/or vitamin and mineral deficiencies like vitamin C, zinc, iron, iodine, magnesium, D3 and K, and even parasites. Some people also believe it’s part of the ascension process into a higher frequency and that it’s the sound of angels, higher beings, the cosmos or God communicating with them through their hearing. The standard explanation is that the brain is basically in fight or flight mode and you’re hearing your own nervous system on red alert. It can fix itself over time by using a process called habituation which is accepting it and getting used to the sound and/or neuroplasticity which is fundamentally rewiring the brain and creating new neural pathways by training it not to hear the sound which makes it recede into the background and eventually disappears because the brain sees that it is no longer a threat and as unimportant. This is achieved through the repetition of positive mental affirmations, visualization and relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, Qi gong and/or exercise and/or neck release exercises called trigger point therapy, upper cervical chiropractic adjustments and/or regular chiropractic, certain dental procedures which involve the use of mouth guards and jaw releasing, relaxation and massage exercises, cranial sacral therapy, EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique also known as ‘tapping’, hypnotherapy, visualization, and other body and mind relaxation therapies and/or masking with nature sounds or pink noise. What can also help is reducing/removing some or all coffee, teas, sodas, alcohol, salt, sugar, spices, condiments, dairy, carbs, nuts, seeds, the night shade family of veggies, salicylates and oxylates from the diet and intermittent, 24 or 48 hour wet or dry fasting. Some people see results whether they’re vegan, vegetarian or meat eaters and even some do none of the above and still get better over time. Still, the majority of what I’ve read and seen in videos is that a healthy diet, stress reducing exercises and ignoring the sound so the brain can retrain itself not to hear it have the most impact on reducing and healing T. Some people have had relief or have been cured by taking these supplements: D3 combined with K2 and Magnesium and/or Bioflavanoids combined with Vit C, B12 (also known as Methycobalamine or Methyl B12), Methyl Folate, Niacin (Flush Free), Taurine and Ginko Biloba. I have a dosage schedule available if you decide to try these supplements. A comment from Elann Suvat on one of Julian Cowan Hill’s videos: “As others have said do not go on Tinnitus Talk. In fact do not google anything. Tinnitus is a symptom of a neurological condition that can be resolved. Learn to rewire your brain through helpful videos such as this one. Reduce stress and disrupt chronic stress, get down to the root of your anxiety and depression, rewire your brain not to be sensitive or hypersensitive to environmental noise and life around you.” “It can be done. It can be reversed. One key thing about tinnitus is not to have anger, hate, stress, fixation on it. It will only make it worse and allow it to stay. Do not give your tinnitus power. Embrace it. Think of your tinnitus as a bodily noise that’s telling you your body is alive and busy healing. It’s telling you something important. Find the root cause. Is it neurological, physiological or both? Do away with negativity and toxic relationships. Diet and lifestyle are extremely important. Sleep, reduction of stress, EXERCISE, having positive social relationships, working toward a move of happiness and relaxation every day. Be kind, compassionate, patient and authentic to yourself. This is crucial. Be courageous.” Check out Julian Cowan Hill, Liam Stops Tinnitus, James Karthaus, Peter Studenik and Joey Remenyi and many others in the video compilation list below. @@chrisk6488 It's still there, but it's barely audible, not because I've gotten used to it, but because it has decreased in volume so much that I can barely hear it even in absolute silence. Sometimes it gets louder, but nothing as annoying as the first 2 months. It took about 2 months for my tinnitus to start decreasing in volume and about 6 months for it to become barely noticeable. What I did was not listen to any music for a full month, and try to isolate myself as much as possible from loud noises, I bought earplugs to use on the subway and in high volume places. Nowadays I go to many concerts, and I still play in bands maybe at a too high volume, but since I use the earplugs I have never had any kind of problem. I recommend you not to get frustrated, maybe your tinnitus will go away, maybe not, but in life everything has a solution, maybe it is not the solution you are looking for, but it is a solution that in the long term will allow you to live peacefully. Seek help if you need it and think that even though it may not seem like it, in the future you will feel well again.

Hi Julian, I've posted a question in another video of yours and you've covered it here. Yes, music is the most enjoyable thing in my life. Playing the piano and listening to music cannot be stopped. One challenge though is that the music is in between the tinnitus and my perception. As you focus on the sounds of music you inevitably encounter the buzzing charges on the path. The only way is to integrate the ringuing as if it's an inevitable "background" sound to the music listening experience. And even a string orchestra in low volume seems to bring up the levels of the tinnitus. I'm learning to 'tune out' while maintaining my focus on the music. It seems music listening is different than simply focusing on another sound instead of the tinnitus. Never giving up. Simply learning how to circumvent the ringuing.

Hey Julian great stuff. Here is my story. I got what I believe to be audio fatigue Tinnitus. I was playing my new TD 50 Roland V drum kit with Dre pro studio headphones from Late Dec until early April when the ringing stayed and turned into sounding like desert crickets. Thanks to some of your methods specially on the psychological side, and other tips it's pretty well getting tamed and it was quite loud. I stopped using headphones to watch TV use a blue tooth speaker and hearing protection. I went to an ENT who told me I had slight hearing loss nothing I can do live with it & find a new hobby. He gave me a pamphlet for TRT but its not covered by medical. I tried back ground and youtube therapy sounds only aggravates it. Also saw an audiologist who said I did NOT suffer hearing loss and to simply let time pass by and that TRT was BS. Contrary to what they both told me I always believed my problem was frequency and not volume related. Last week I picked up some powered studio monitors to try drumming again not to do it with headphones. I had lower volume and music earplugs but upon using the drums Tinnitus flares up and spikes after the fact. Is this psychosomatic due to the fact I know that the Drums caused Tinnitus or do i simply have to wait longer?

Audio test shows a drop of high frequency in the right ear but ENT said everything was in range and close together however when I listen to headphones things in middle lean to left. Very disconcerting. Did you ever have something like this?

I have a number of conditions and a lot of symptoms and this is hard enough for my mind to even grasp little own real comprehend and work thru,, having said that, I'm still looking for understanding. I am doing The TRT program over here in British Columbia Canada :) and just yesterday sent a letter to my Therapist and here it is, Hello Carol I am just noticing that I have been going thru a high volume/level of my T and many times very High Hyperacusis and I have been not handling people talking, little much bigger and more powerful noises no TV in months and low volume computer. I am at a loss for excepting this condition. I am sure other aspects of my conditions could make it difficult to understand. I have been seeing Maria Z, but my High bouts have been troubling for some time, I don't take notes and cant recall easily, It's 3pm and my head is insanely loud and upsetting. Trying to stay positive Ian

Staying positive helps. Good to find a body-based therapist ie craniosacral therapist or something similar that can help you switch off and let go. Its so much easier when you have someone there supporting you. Have you found something that destresses you and helps you switch off yet? Still love the beard!

This is my worst fear to stop playing drums, I have very severe tinnitus since a concert I went to last year and I have the feeling that on the long road my T gets way louder. Do you have some advice? I already play with shure in ears when I play with all my mics + the track coming straight in my ears, but I don't really know if it's too loud. Like now there's a new beeb in my left ear since a few weeks ago after drumming a lot for a cover I wanted to make.

Julian, if you can please address hyperacusis as well. I've learned that around 40% of everyone with T has hyperacusis. I'm one of them. I got T and H the very same day. In terms of socializing H is actually worse than T. When everything goes silent the T takes over so it's an ongoing struggle. Some have managed to overcome H totally, I've read some cases.

Actually listening music at a certain volume which is loud enough to mask other sounds helps me with hyperacusis but I fear that can aggravate my t so now I am having both and not able to decide weather music is good or bad.

Focus on calming and settling your central nervous system with hands-on therapy and yoga or tai chi. Over a period of time this will bring your internal hearing sensitivity down which means you will be able to tolerate louder and louder noise.

Is there a cure to tinnitus

Before you read, if you are having suicidal thoughts about your tinnitus and don't know where else to go or who to ask call this number immediately and seek help: 1-800-273-8255 Your life is precious don't throw it away. How you deal with it will rid you of the burden known as tinnitus topically. Scientists are working on a cure and they do have hearing aids that can reduce the noise of tinnitus dramatically. *Medically* there is no cure, no pill, no surgery, no shocking to the brain to eliminate tinnitus as of yet. However it seems you can rewire your brain to at least reduce and even get rid of tinnitus, this may take weeks, months or even years and its effects may get better or worse over time on the road to recovery. T is different for everyone and it getting worse is all on your perception and how you handle it. Some people who do recover and completely eliminate their tinnitus have had massive tinnitus spikes and others have had rapid success. Now you may seek an immediate answer to your T, and other than "get used to it and shut up already" the best way to help you is to allow you to see the option that you can help yourself. Helping yourself would correlate to seeking therapy, a hypnotist, or a professional like Julian. If you can't see Julian or skype him at least watch his videos. I don't know if his methods actually work since apparently its "confidential" due to him being a therapist of sorts, but I'm going to at least watch the videos he has post at the moment to help me on my way to recovery. I hope this helps, and don't be afraid to seek the help you need to stay sane and alive.
