I was very lucky. Went to a sale with no intention of buying (hadn't owned a horse since I was a teenager). Ended up purchasing a 2 year old filly with 60 days of training (mind you all the horses in the sale were this). I knew the owner/breeder of the horses in the sale and bought the one that had good cow lines and went under a certain price. I think she ended up being the buy of the sale and I have owned her ever since...she is now 11 and worth her weight in gold.

Excellent video!! Thank you!! I have purchased 2 horses from auctions and am very happy with them both. Spent a little more than planned...but they are both worth their weight in gold!! I did have the opportunity to see them and work with them a little before the auctions. Also was able to do pre-purchase exams before the auctions. Highly recommend this if you can. I have had horses for 56 years and raised babies and you get the "feel" of the ones that will be the good ones! It's hard to explain to people sometimes. And you pray alot too! 😉 Very much enjoy your videos! So nice to see a horse trainer with common sense!!

As a farrier, a friend/client asked me to look over some older, been there-done that kind of horses for her at a sale ...just to make sure there weren't any glaringly obvious hoof or leg problems. I pointed out 3 that were decent prospects, but couldn't stay for the whole sale. The next day I asked if she had gotten one of those horses. No, she had gotten a younger, unbroke horse! Needless to say, she never wound up with that "just get on and ride" horse she originally wanted.

Interesting. It's the sort of thing that a rash ADHD type would do. In fact it just dawned on me that the heady, exciting atmosphere at auctions is purposely designed to encourage impulse buying. Fine with antiques or collectibles... not so much for animals :(

There's auctions and then there are auctions. In our area there are many "last stop before Mexico/Quebec" auctions. Horses go for the meat price and are often poorly handled, sick and/or lame. They are flagged into a pen like cattle or goats. This auction looks like a much better place to buy a horse. Too bad you couldn't film for real. Looking forward to seeing your new horses!

Just an FYI: the nationwide TAA (Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance) probably holds auctions, as well. Factoid... a percentage of every Claiming race purse now goes to the TAA. The industry is finally passionate about putting the abattoirs out of business, and giving these noble friends (most are still quite young) an alternate pathway in life. Thanks for doing this episode, Ryan.🤠

Well, here's my story. Never, ever had I bought a horse at an auction: then in a moment of weakness, I bought a young, bright bay mare with Peppy San Badger and Doc Bar on her actual papers. (She had several other point earners/Hall of Famers: cannot recall at this second). Anyhow, rode her for 3 weeks with a helmet on (cause this mare could turn around in a phone booth). She was gentle and light. (No problems). Week 3: saddled her. Took my helmet off 3 times...finally decided to leave it on (my 3 youngns were observing my horsemanship. Lol). As I mounted her, this mare LEAPED straight up like a cat before I could get my foot in the stirrup. Of course, I flew up and then down with a crash on ground that hadn't seen rain for 5 weeks. Long story short: some time later had a Baron Red filly delivered from ND and shared this experience with the haulers. Their response was this: 'Peppy San Badger/Doc Bar was a lethal combination that created a super athlete that was plumb crazy!' That is why I never, ever bought another horse at an auction. That was many years ago. Took me 3 months to recover. And I had to replace the helmet: it was cracked.

I'm so glad you made the right decision. Those were pro am horses for sure, but ended up like the Adolar babies in the 80s. So pretty, he threw black with chrome, and so much fire people were getting launched left and right. You could just tell these horses were pro rides but not pro quality.

That was a good video. Always to keep in mind of what kind of horse you are looking for and keep in mind your budget. But you can also give a horse that is neglected, malnourished or whatever a second chance. It takes some time and/or money but a lot of horses rescued by Horse Plus Humane Society in Tennessee get a second chance of a forever loving home.

The “caliber” of sale you go to makes a huge difference as well. At a more high end sale like the one y’all went to is going to be much safer than some of the lower dollar, more seedy ones. Our local auction is very low-end and almost exclusively horse traders. It’s the kind of auction people think of where you’re likely to find horses in very poor shape and very unlikely to find something well trained, sound, and reliable. I will say though, going to those types of sales (or any kind really) as a spectator will teach you a lot about evaluating horses quickly and how certain issues are likely to present.

Purchased a pony 13h2", in 2004, am a DVM and was with another DVM so we examined the mare, talked to the seller about he training, she was ride and drive. It was an annual two day pony sale. The bidding was high and I came in with two bids at the last. She needed more driving training to prepare her for Combined Driving Eventing and that was done by a professional while I took lessons plus attended a college class for a semester. We did lots of ground work and she passed the level two Parelli. A left brain extrovert (but not extreme) she is great fun. Have been pleased with her every since. She has a forever home.

I highly recommend the Virginia trail horse sale in Lexington in April. Been going on 20+ years now. Beautiful indoor facility. Horses come in on Thursday, you can see them, talk to trainers, watch obstacles and cow type competitions on Friday only sale horses allowed. Then bid on Saturday. Online bidding too I think. All horses sold have a 72 hour soundness/health guarantee. Plenty of time for vet exam

I like your channel. I'm a horse lover and owned 2 in the past. However, I don't like auctions, the horses that are not bought go to the Slaughter Pipeline. So knowing that I can't look at those horses, I'm too sensitive for that. Colorado is known for it's auctions and they are treated horribly. That said, I'm glad you found some.

It depends on the auction and what's on sale. It makes no sense to put so much time and effort into training a horse just to sell it for meat. Auctions for meat generally sell the broke down horses. Auctions like the one Ryan showed are generally for quality horses hoping to find their best fit jobs.

This is true. Older horses, trail riding horses used for the season and then sent to auction. Outgrown ponies too. Many, many good horses are sent to auction, and once they go that route, they never seem to get out of the cycle. Plus all the diseases the horses pick up, they all get sick and need quarantine. That being said, I did finally go to an auction and buy a horse, because so many people listing horses were lying to me. Step one, I went to the auction several times to understand the process. I learnt who were the flippers that would jack up the bidding, who were the ones likely to drug the horses, and what was "popular" in the area pulling higher prices than they should. I came home with a 3 yr old, because most of the horses in the age range I was looking for had all sorts of issues. Only very knowledgeable horse people should ever consider buying at the auction. My young mare did get sick, and was possibly drugged as she is a whole lot more spooky now. But she is coming along well in her retaining, and follows me everywhere. Her legs, feet and body are good and she moves well. Personally I think I bought the best horse there and she will be with me forever. No more auctions for her ever.
