I don't allow mine to crowd me I use the stick string I have twenty horses that I feed in a circle .They are not allowed to touch the hay until I'm done putting the hay out and I give them permission to and they are not allowed to push another out of their pile either. They eat their pile and then walk away. It took about a week or so to get to that way. Some were very food aggressive some not so It's very important to keep all of us safe. Great video sir I love how you work and the knowledge that you have!

I did this and I can walk into the pasture with a full bale of hay, separate it into 4 piles, and none of the two horses or donkey are allowed to be within 10 feet unless i tell them its ok. Once i give the ok, they can come eat, but i can go back to any pile and reclaim it or all of them. Im 67, and its been a great safety tool. I also have specific spots where they are allowed to eat, and i guard the donkeys food, cuz they will eat it if I dont. I use hand gestures to tell them to go to their boxes.

First thing: those horses need fly spray. Any horse is going to be antsy when they have a cloud of flies around them. Second, why are they getting grain - are they getting worked hard? Sometimes a horse reacts to grain like a kid reacts to candy - they get a buzz and behave badly. Third, horse snot is hazardous! Hilarious.

I'm fostering an abuse case QH mare and she also had this tendency. What I did was carry a lunge whip with me to discourage that. Problem was she had gotten so used to having her own way or people just throwing the food and running out she thought I was just another person she could buffalo. She suddenly found herself up against someone who insisted on manners and she didn't like it. She'd press into the whip and bend it. I flipped it around and shoved it hard into her brisket. Her reaction was to spin around and start kicking at me which got her butt stung one time. She'd turn around and glare believing I'd do such a thing. I never yelled or screamed at her and never used the whip more than once. When she fanced me I praised her, put the whip in the vertical and stepped away from her trough allowing her to feed. I had to keep the lunge whip with me for several months as a reminder that if she tried to bully me or turn to kick me I'd use it. Now I don't have to use it at all. She's very calm at feed time and will wait till I serve and step back with an " Ok. Tuck in. "

@@polskigirl8547 Maybe a cross between a shire (tallness and the white parts) and a Fresian.

I don’t actually have horses, but I have goats and sheep, and while they aren’t as big as horses, they can be very dangerous in a mob when they don’t respect your space. I’m looking forward to applying these techniques to my feeding times.

Anybody who thinks it's MEAN! to whack a horse with a string or whip (not talking about raising welts) has never been bitten or kicked. It's no fun to have a 1000# animal come at you with their ears pinned and teeth bared - you can get killed or injured by a horse. You need to figure out who should be in charge: you, or a bad tempered toddler in a 1000# body.

I've been doing something similar with the horses I volunteer with and it's surprising how quickly they respond to this. The few times I fed them in the stalls I noticed they were ear pinny and crowded my space a lot and they wanted me to hurry up. The past few times I've only gone in the stalls with food when their ears are forward and I only put down the food and allow them to eat when they respect my space and still have respectful ears. They'll be really rowdy at first but then simmer down after a few minutes and then they'll either been really calm and quiet or they'll be at the other end of the stall doing a small dance while licking and chewing. It's a bit intimidating when they get rowdy but feels so good when you know they respect you afterwards.

I can’t imagine that owners like this have no clue about protecting your space. This is horse training 101, and along with establishing the leadership role, this should be required learning well before you buy that very first horse.

@@jeanettewaverly2590 True. There can be a place for carrots on occasion, but on your terms. I really like Steve Young Horsemanship. He’s a guy from Britain who takes on “dangerous” horses that are only dangerous because the owners have not taught them who is the leader and how to teach to stop unrequested forward motion. He works with kindness, but quality making your idea become the horses’ idea. The videos are long since his wife films the destination trips too, but I’ve learned so much from him.

I don't think this is a training issue but rather a management issue. In the pasture, loose horses are dangerous, period. As Ryan said, even kind horses will put themselves first when retreating from a bully. If a puny human is in the way, he gets knocked down or run over. Carry a buggy whip or lunge whip in the pasture. When I say it's not training, but management, I mean that if you stop carrying the whip, they will eventually return to staus quo, crowding human.

My horse responds to the command "back up" to get out of my space (trained him originally with pressure, too). I hate horses that crowd you for feed.

Feeding time is always dangerous. Horses or cattle - it doesn't matter. You need a plan and you never let your guard down.

i love that keep the flag in the wagon method. makes total sense. i got head clobbered at feeding time, because i did not realize the greedy mare took an aggressive dive at the mare that got feed first over her panel. thank you for this clear consistent method.

Really good video. On a side note, I bet those horses would appreciate fly masks and some RESCUE fly traps hanging around.

I was shocked that someone was feeding like that in the first place. As someone else pointed out, why would you not feed from the outside?

I too was very blessed to have sensible horses. I had 5 at one time. These horses had a shotgun style barn they lived in they were free to come and go but each had their own stall. I would whistle them up to feed and they each went in order to the correct stall. I didn't really train them they just had to follow the orders of my lead gelding. So he trained them. But if everybody was not in the right place he would change them around. They all knew Sunny got grain first or nobody did.

I really get alot of insights from watching your videos, feeding time has been a bit of a danger with my 2 horses, the gelding has issues, he arrived from his previous owner all bones. He's back to being the weight he should be, his anxiety has abated big time, but between times my safety was at risk. The mare now follows my cues and removes hersefl from the paddock entrance, in order to stop either of us being in harms way, she's a smart cookie. Love your work Ryan.

He gives such good advice! I can't feed horses unless when I bring in the hay they are walking off as I drive them out. We also work on the whoa signal. When I'm driving them away carrying their hay I then say whoa and once they are waiting in their place with a good look on their face (ears forward, legs still) then do I toss hay over to them. Amazing how quickly a new horse picks up on this routine.

The flies look horrendous there

A very good video, showing how to safely feed horses. I got kicked hard in the thigh a few weeks ago from being in a hurry and letting my guard down during feeding time. Dang! It taught me to never get complacent even after decades around horses. I try to always carry a savvy string when I’m around the horses.They respect it and I can easily establish my space with it. I watched the Ron Pyne video too. That was impressive!

I’m revisiting this because my horse charged me when I came into the pen today, then when I told her to back up went back two steps then turned and started bucking. I thought she was gonna kick me but she didn’t, thank God. I need to bring the flag whip in and train them like this.

That kind of behavior isn't acceptable. Through groundwork you can adjust her charging you then running away at feeding time. If she put pressure on me (charging you) then wheeled off and went to running I'd say intercept her at the drive line to either change direction or halt her. Round pen work could really help solidify this concept. Lastly, it's okay as humans to drive horses away from their hay pile and "occupy" the pile for a minute. Think like a horse, this means volumes to them.

I love this. I didn't know horses could be like that. This should make her (and others) life so much better and saferI do this with my dogs at feeding time.

Separate piles help along with space respect to stop bickering among horses. We did 2 horses 3 piles 4=5 piles etc. All in one area never so good!

OMG that Ron Pyne video was fantastic. At first I didn't realize there were tubs on the ground. I thought they were just lining up. But standing over the tubs and not eating is insane!! Great trainer.

She a nice gal, I can just tell. I cant help but think that maybe a back up feeding plan/strategy should be looked into. I say this in regards to, or if, someone that is green around horses has to step in in her absence (like on a trip) take on the task of feeding those horses. For the cost of that nice covered feeder, you buy a several Fortex rubber pans to slide under the rail.

I do this with my horses and I do make my 3 year filly lower her head before she can eat I had no idea that was a thing I just did to get her to calm down some because she gets sooooooo excited over her grain! Super cool lesson! 🙂

My Bo likes to make sure everyone has the same thing, so my daughter just ties his happy ass 😒 up....till everyone is done.....no one will mess with him....he's a senior horse n have been with one other horse for 16yrs, so they have mutual respect for each other....but we have a young jack n another young horse....all is good now....

Awesome! I did this with packs of 14 or more dogs.. The dogs were easy as I stood completely still and only moved (to the food bin/dishes) if the dog pack was laying down, even one dog moving and I would not move ..when I got 2 horses my mare was dominate over powering fatso and I just did what I did with my dogs, Altho I used a horse whip. ..sometimes I would touch her to move her, but now 3 yrs in and she is respectful and my TB gelding can eat his full meal and neither are crowding me and the feed cart!

So I just want to say don’t feed like this but stopped myself because who cares what I think. Then I read the comments 😂. This video is a great lesson that you must own the space. There are just way better ways to setup feeding. Specially if they are coming in to a stall at night. Thank you for putting it out there

Hi Ryan, I enjoy your videos very much, I gotta little idea I would like to share, and if that catches your interest maybe that would help you improve your videos. There is this tv show in my country about a professional famous restaurant creator, which visits restaurants that need help with their business. (I'm sure you can see the analogy here) The creator looks at the business owners' issues, and revolutionizes their whole restaurant. Sometimes its a whole metamorphosis. But there is this strong "managing" and psychology component. So after the metamorphosis and tutoring the business owners, the creator leaves them for about two weeks alone. And makes a second unannounced visit. That brought to surface any leftover issues, and decided if the creator will put his name as a quality check of the restaurant. I'm pretty sure you can see where I am getting at. In simple words, have you considered re-visiting your clients to see how they are doing after some time after the tutoring, to basically help them strengthen their new habits with taking care about their horses? I hope I am not too crazy bringing that to the table. I'm sure re-visits might be little difficult logistically...

Yeah, that is just the dry lot connected to the barn. They have access to 2 large pastures during the day, but are stalled at night.

Omg. No way .....

Why can’t she arrange this so she doesn’t have to go inside the paddock at all? Those feeders hang on the fence, so hang them from outside. Put the hay tub next to the fence and fill it from the outside. She created this issue with this poor arrangement.

This is such an important tool, even if you only have one horse. My horse was food aggressive when I first got her and came after me. I used the flag a couple of times and now she won't eat until I release her. Even if you don't have a problem this should be a part of ground training.

My mare, owned 10 years now, very food aggressive and dominant with threats. I began first feed, that the hay was mine , just stood on hay. She got aggressive and moved to another pile. Repeated standing over that flake. Third time, stil being aggressive, she shook her head at me, asking WTH do you want? Talked quietly to her, she looked, dropped her head and took a breath. Now u can eat I said, and walked away. She waits now, no problems. Great teaching video.

The fact that ppl this old don't know bare basics is mind boggling. I wonder what sort of well behaved children shes let loose into society?

I can't understand how people get in this situation? I can't recall anytime a horse has disrespected me this much. Americans are froggy pushy it doesn't seem to carry over in a horse atmosphere, when it's necessary.

Feeding is getting dangerous because the feeding person is not doing it right.

why doesn't she feed on the fence line? she can't be that clueless, can she? With horses that big I would build slips so that only 1 horse will fit and feed that way, I worked with over 20 polo ponies and they wouldn't get fed until each of them was in a slip, easy peasy. not danger, no injury and they could eat in peace

There are no 'bad ' horses , just bad owners who fail to take "ownership". They are the ones who who get hurt because they allow bad habits to escalate putting everyone at risk. If you allow an 1100 pound animal to dictate the rules, you lose.
